The Maze - Seeing the World through Mathematical Eyes (Hardcover): Stewart The Maze - Seeing the World through Mathematical Eyes (Hardcover)
Stewart
R675 Discovery Miles 6 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Welcome to the maze.

A logical maze, a magical maze. A maze of the mind.

The maze is mathematics. The mind is yours. Let's see what happens when we put them together.

What is mathematics? What do mathematicians do?

What is a mathematician? Someone who does mathematics?

Not exactly. That's too easy an answer, and it creates too simple a maze—a circular loop of self-referential logic. No, a mathematician is more than just somebody who does mathematics. Think of it this way: what is a businessperson? Someone who does business? Yes, but not just that. A businessperson is someone who sees an opportunity for doing business where the rest of us see nothing; while we're complaining that there's no restaurant in the area, he or she is organizing a telephone pizza delivery service. Similarly, a mathematician is someone who sees opportunities for doing mathematics that the rest of us miss.

I want to open your mind to some of these opportunities."—from The Magical Maze

About Another Fine Math You've Got Me Into:

"Ian Stewart's quirky humor and imaginative storytelling entice readers into a fascinating world of mathematical curiosities."—Ivars Peterson author of The Jungles of Randomness

Enter the magical maze of mathematics and explore the surprising passageways of a fantastical world where logic and imagination converge. For mathematics is a maze—a maze in your head—a maze of ideas, a maze of logic. And that maze in your mind is a powerful tool for understanding an even bigger maze—the maze of cause and effect that we call "the universe." That is its special kind of magic. Real magic. Strange magic. Infinitely fascinating magic.

In this adventure of a book, acclaimed author Ian Stewart leads you swiftly and humorously through the junctions, byways, and secret passages of the magical maze to reveal its beauty, its surprise, and its power. Along the way, he reveals the infinite possibilities that arise from what he calls "the two-way trade between the natural world and the human mind."

On your travels you will encounter number magic—both the stage-act variety and the deeper magic of animals, plants, and the physical world. You will come to understand the amazing pattern-forming abilities of the humble slime mold, the numerology of flowers, and the feeding habits of pigs and panthers. You will discover how to solve puzzles the algorithmic way, the artistic way, and the army way. You will be amazed by the deep connections between the founding of Carthage, soap bubbles, and communications networks. You will discover how to use a toy train set as a computer, and find out why this implies that there are unavoidable limits to mathematics. You will join the controversy over cars and goats, find out the terrible truth about confessions, and win endless bets about birthdays. You will see how a new idea about ferns can lead to a multi-million-dollar computer graphics company, and how Jupiter and Mars can combine forces to hurl cosmic rocks at Earth. And you will never again be able to watch a kitten, a kangaroo, or a Chihuahua without noticing the delightfully rhythmic patterns with which they move their feet.

If you've always loved mathematics, you will find endless delights in the twists and turns of The Magical Maze. If you've always hated mathematics, a trip through this marvelous book will do much to change your mind.

American-Type Options - Stochastic Approximation Methods, Volume 2 (Hardcover): Dmitrii S. Silvestrov American-Type Options - Stochastic Approximation Methods, Volume 2 (Hardcover)
Dmitrii S. Silvestrov
R5,061 Discovery Miles 50 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book gives a systematical presentation of stochastic approximation methods for discrete time Markov price processes. Advanced methods combining backward recurrence algorithms for computing of option rewards and general results on convergence of stochastic space skeleton and tree approximations for option rewards are applied to a variety of models of multivariate modulated Markov price processes. The principal novelty of presented results is based on consideration of multivariate modulated Markov price processes and general pay-off functions, which can depend not only on price but also an additional stochastic modulating index component, and use of minimal conditions of smoothness for transition probabilities and pay-off functions, compactness conditions for log-price processes and rate of growth conditions for pay-off functions. The volume presents results on structural studies of optimal stopping domains, Monte Carlo based approximation reward algorithms, and convergence of American-type options for autoregressive and continuous time models, as well as results of the corresponding experimental studies.

Guaranteed Estimation Problems in the Theory of Linear Ordinary Differential Equations with Uncertain Data (Hardcover):... Guaranteed Estimation Problems in the Theory of Linear Ordinary Differential Equations with Uncertain Data (Hardcover)
Oleksandr Nakonechnyi, Yuri Podlipenko
R3,500 Discovery Miles 35 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph is devoted to the construction of optimal estimates of values of linear functionals on solutions to Cauchy and two-point boundary value problems for systems of linear first-order ordinary differential equations, from indirect observations which are linear transformations of the same solutions perturbed by additive random noises. It is assumed that right-hand sides of equations and boundary data as well as statistical characteristics of random noises in observations are not known and belong to certain given sets in corresponding functional spaces. This leads to the necessity of introducing the minimax statement of an estimation problem when optimal estimates are defined as linear, with respect to observations, estimates for which the maximum of mean square error of estimation taken over the above-mentioned sets attains minimal value. Such estimates are called minimax or guaranteed estimates. It is established that these estimates are expressed explicitly via solutions to some uniquely solvable linear systems of ordinary differential equations of the special type. The authors apply these results for obtaining the optimal estimates of solutions from indirect noisy observations. Similar estimation problems for solutions of boundary value problems for linear differential equations of order n with general boundary conditions are considered. The authors also elaborate guaranteed estimation methods under incomplete data of unknown right-hand sides of equations and boundary data and obtain representations for the corresponding guaranteed estimates. In all the cases estimation errors are determined.

Vital Directions for Mathematics Education Research (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Keith R. Leatham Vital Directions for Mathematics Education Research (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Keith R. Leatham
R3,645 R3,345 Discovery Miles 33 450 Save R300 (8%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a collection of chapters from prominent mathematics educators in which they each discuss vital issues in mathematics education and what they see as viable directions research in mathematics education could take to address these issues. All of these issues are related to learning and teaching mathematics. The book consists of nine chapters, seven from each of seven scholars who participated in an invited lecture series (Scholars in Mathematics Education) at Brigham Young University, and two chapters from two other scholars who are writing reaction papers that look across the first seven chapters. The recommendations take the form of broad, overarching principles and ideas that cut across the field. In this sense, this book differs from classical "research agenda projects," which seek to outline specific research questions that the field should address around a central topic.

Elizabeth De Freitas, Margaret Walshaw
R3,298 Discovery Miles 32 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explicates some of the fundamental philosophical tenets underpinning key theoretical frameworks, and demonstrates how these tenets inform particular kinds of research practice in mathematics education research. We believe that a deep understanding of significant theories from the humanities and social sciences is crucial for doing high-quality research in education. For that reason, this book focuses on six key theoretical sources, unpacking their relevance and application to specific research examples. We situate these key theorists within a larger framework pertaining to the history of thought more generally, and discuss how competing theories of teaching and learning differ in terms of their philosophical assumptions. In so doing, we offer context and motivation for particular research methods, with the agenda of helping researchers reflect on why particular approaches and not others might work for them.

Selection Bias and Covariate Imbalances in Randomized Clinical Trials (Hardcover): VW Berger Selection Bias and Covariate Imbalances in Randomized Clinical Trials (Hardcover)
VW Berger
R2,116 Discovery Miles 21 160 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Baseline data in clinical trials consists of information regarding patients that is measured at the outset, prior to randomization (or treatment with study medications). In studies where important baseline factors appear well balanced, it can be reasonably concluded that any differences in outcome between the intervention and control groups are a real effect of treatment. The common assumption that any baseline differences in a randomized study are necessarily random is, however, misplaced. Selection bias can, and does, occur - even in randomized clinical trials. Steps need to be taken in order to ensure that this does not compromise the integrity of clinical trials; hence "Selection Bias and Covariate Imbalances in Randomized Clinical Trials" offers the first comprehensive treatment of the subject and the methodology involved. Provides an overview of the hierarchy of study designs, and justifies the position of randomized trials at the top of this hierarchy. Discusses the strengths and defects of randomization, and provides real evidence to justify concern regarding its defects. Outlays the damaging consequences that selection bias causes when it does occur. Considers courses of action that can be taken to manage/contain the problem. Presents methods that can be used to detect selection bias in randomized trials, and methods to correct for selection bias. Concludes by providing a comprehensive plan for managing baseline imbalances and selection bias in randomized trials, and proposing open problems for future research.

"Selection Bias and Covariate Imbalances in Randomized Clinical Trials" provides an in-depth overview of a key aspect in the design and analysis of clinical trials, featuring modern and novel approaches to the methodology described. Illustrated with case studies, this book introduces groundbreaking ideas and research that will be invaluable to researchers and practitioners who design and analyse clinical trials. It will also be of interest to graduate students within the field of biostatistics.

The Land Between - A History of Slovenia (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Oto Luthar The Land Between - A History of Slovenia (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Oto Luthar
R1,025 Discovery Miles 10 250 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This is a history of a space - a space between the Panonian plain in the East and the most northernmost bay in the Adriatic in the West, from the eastern Alps in the North and the Dinaridic mountain area in the South. It is also a history of all the different people who lived in this area. The authors show that the Slavs did not settle an empty space and simply replace the Celto-Roman inhabitants of earlier times; they are, on the contrary, presented as the result of reciprocal acculturation. The authors show that the Slovenes made more than two important appearances throughout the entire feudal era; the same holds for later periods, especially for the twentieth century. This book offers a concise and complete history of an area that finally became an integral part of Central Europe and the Balkans.

Towards Equity in Mathematics Education - Gender, Culture, and Diversity (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Helen Forgasz, Ferdinand Rivera Towards Equity in Mathematics Education - Gender, Culture, and Diversity (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Helen Forgasz, Ferdinand Rivera
R3,899 Discovery Miles 38 990 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Thisvolume gathers together twenty major chapters that tackle a variety of issues associated with equity in mathematics education along the dimensions of gender, culture, curriculum diversity, and matters of a biological nature.The pursuit of equity in mathematics education is an important concern in the history of the present. Since there is no doubt about the significant role of mathematics in almost every aspect of life, it means that all individuals regardless of sex, in any age range, and in whatever context need to be provided with an opportunity to become mathematically able. The publication of this Springer volume on equity in mathematics education is situated at a time when there is strong and sustained research evidence indicating the persistence of an equity gap in mathematics, which has now enabled the mathematics education community to engage in a discourse of access for all.

The research studies that are reported and discussed in the volume have been drawn from an international group of distinguished scholars whose impressive, forward-looking, and thought-provoking perspectives on relevant issues incite, broaden, and expand complicated conversations on how we might effectively achieve equity in mathematics education at the local, institutional, and systemic levels. Further, the up-to-date research knowledge in the field that is reflected in this volume provides conceptual and practical outlines for mechanisms of change, including models, examples, and usable theories that can inform the development of powerful equitable practices and the mobilization of meaningful equity interventions in different contexts of mathematics education. Eisenstein Series and Applications (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): Wee Teck Gan, Stephen S. Kudla, Yuri Tschinkel Eisenstein Series and Applications (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
Wee Teck Gan, Stephen S. Kudla, Yuri Tschinkel
R3,032 Discovery Miles 30 320 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Eisenstein series are an essential ingredient in the spectral theory of automorphic forms and an important tool in the theory of L-functions. They have also been exploited extensively by number theorists for many arithmetic purposes. Bringing together contributions from areas which are not usually interacting with each other, this volume will introduce diverse users of Eisenstein series to a variety of important applications. With this juxtaposition of perspectives, the reader obtains deeper insights into the arithmetic of Eisenstein series. The central theme of the exposition focuses on the common structural properties of Eisenstein series occurring in many related applications that have arisen in several recent developments in arithmetic: Arakelov intersection theory on Shimura varieties, special values of L-functions and Iwasawa theory, and equidistribution of rational/integer points on homogeneous varieties. Key questions that are considered include: Is it possible to identify a class of Eisenstein series whose Fourier coefficients (resp. special values) encode significant arithmetic information? Do such series fit into p-adic families? and, Are the Eisenstein series that arise in counting problems of this type?

Intuition in Science and Mathematics - An Educational Approach (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): H. Fischbein Intuition in Science and Mathematics - An Educational Approach (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
H. Fischbein
R4,137 Discovery Miles 41 370 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In writing the present book I have had in mind the following objectives: - To propose a theoretical, comprehensive view of the domain of intuition. - To identify and organize the experimental findings related to intuition scattered in a wide variety of research contexts. - To reveal the educational implications of the idea, developed for science and mathematics education. Most of the existing monographs in the field of intuition are mainly concerned with theoretical debates - definitions, philosophical attitudes, historical considerations. (See, especially the works of Wild (1938), of Bunge (1 962) and of Noddings and Shore (1 984).) A notable exception is the book by Westcott (1968), which combines theoretical analyses with the author's own experimental studies. But, so far, no attempt has been made to identify systematically those findings, spread throughout the research literature, which could contribute to the deciphering of the mechanisms of intuition. Very often the relevant studies do not refer explicitly to intuition. Even when this term is used it occurs, usually, as a self-evident, common sense term.

R3,372 Discovery Miles 33 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A database management system (DBMS) is a collection of programs that enable users to create and maintain a database; it also consists of a collection of interrelated data and a set of programs to access that data. Hence, a DBMS is a general-purpose software system that facilitates the processes of defining, constructing, and manipulating databases for various applications. The primary goal of a DBMS is to provide an environment that is both convenient and efficient to use in retrieving and storing database information. It is an interface between the user of application programs, on the one hand, and the database, on the other. The objective of Database Management System: An Evolutionary Approach, is to enable the learner to grasp a basic understanding of a DBMS, its need, and its terminologies discern the difference between the traditional file-based systems and a DBMS code while learning to grasp theory in a practical way study provided examples and case studies for better comprehension This book is intended to give under- and postgraduate students a fundamental background in DBMSs. The book follows an evolutionary learning approach that emphasizes the basic concepts and builds a strong foundation to learn more advanced topics including normalizations, normal forms, PL/SQL, transactions, concurrency control, etc. This book also gives detailed knowledge with a focus on entity-relationship (ER) diagrams and their reductions into tables, with sufficient SQL codes for a more practical understanding.

Natural and Gauge Natural Formalism for Classical Field Theorie - A Geometric Perspective including Spinors and Gauge Theories... Natural and Gauge Natural Formalism for Classical Field Theorie - A Geometric Perspective including Spinors and Gauge Theories (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
L. Fatibene, M. Francaviglia
R2,860 Discovery Miles 28 600 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this book the authors develop and work out applications to gravity and gauge theories and their interactions with generic matter fields, including spinors in full detail. Spinor fields in particular appear to be the prototypes of truly gauge-natural objects, which are not purely gauge nor purely natural, so that they are a paradigmatic example of the intriguing relations between gauge natural geometry and physical phenomenology. In particular, the gauge natural framework for spinors is developed in this book in full detail, and it is shown to be fundamentally related to the interaction between fermions and dynamical tetrad gravity.

Introduction to Linear Models and Statistical Inference (Hardcover): SJ Janke Introduction to Linear Models and Statistical Inference (Hardcover)
SJ Janke
R4,044 Discovery Miles 40 440 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A multidisciplinary approach that emphasizes learning by analyzing real-world data sets
This book is the result of the authors' hands-on classroom experience and is tailored to reflect how students best learn to analyze linear relationships. The text begins with the introduction of four simple examples of actual data sets. These examples are developed and analyzed throughout the text, and more complicated examples of data sets are introduced along the way. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the book traces the conclusion of the analyses of data sets taken from geology, biology, economics, psychology, education, sociology, and environmental science.
As students learn to analyze the data sets, they master increasingly sophisticated linear modeling techniques, including:
* Simple linear models
* Multivariate models
* Model building
* Analysis of variance (ANOVA)
* Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA)
* Logistic regression
* Total least squares
The basics of statistical analysis are developed and emphasized, particularly in testing the assumptions and drawing inferences from linear models. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter to test students' skills before moving on to more advanced techniques and models. These exercises are marked to indicate whether calculus, linear algebra, or computer skills are needed.
Unlike other texts in the field, the mathematics underlying the models is carefully explained and accessible to students who may not have any background in calculus or linear algebra. Most chapters include an optional final section on linear algebra for students interested in developing a deeper understanding.
The many data sets that appear in the text are available on the book's Web site. The MINITAB(r) software program is used to illustrate many of the examples. For students unfamiliar with MINITAB(r), an appendix introduces the key features needed to study linear models.
With its multidisciplinary approach and use of real-world data sets that bring the subject alive, this is an excellent introduction to linear models for students in any of the natural or social sciences.
