This book introduces the fundamentals of financial mathematics.
It begins with a discussion of simple and compound interest and then establishes the important concepts of effective and equivalent effective interest rates. Subsequent chapters discuss the applications of annuities to practical problems regarding the saving of money and repayment of loans. The notion of using net present value and internal rate of return to distinguish between two different investment opportunities is presented.
The concluding chapters of the book take a brief look at the use of differential and integral calculus in financial mathematics. Each chapter includes numerous worked examples that are solved with the aid of a financial calculator where applicable.
If memories of learning algebra bring you out in a cold sweat and
thoughts of quadratic equations cause you feelings of fear and
dread, I Used to Know That: Maths can help. A light-hearted and
informative reminder of the things that we learnt in school but
have since become relegated to the backs of our minds, this book
will help you to brush up on your mental arithmetic, including
percentages, averages and recurring decimals or work on your
trigonometry skills, from Pythagoras' theorem to triangle areas and
angles. A practical guide to turn to when an answer is eluding you,
from helping a child with homework to calculating change or
understanding statistics. I Used to Know That: Maths is a fun and
accessible way to re-visit all those useful tips and maths tricks
that you have forgotten from your school days.
The 5th edition of Calculus: Early Transcendental Functions
maintains the critical components for which this calculus text is
well known: facilitating mastery of prerequisite algebra and
trigonometry skills, offering an elegant presentation of calculus
concepts that is rigorous yet accessible, and including classic
calculus problems such as applications for STEM and business
disciplines. Key features of the new edition: The new edition
benefits from an accessible layout and presentation of graphs for
topics like limits and continuity and area under the curve. A
thorough revision has been carried out of all end-of-chapter
problems and exercises and 120 new exercises have been added to the
text and Connect. Introduction of "mind mapping" to help students
understand the nature of calculus problems and develop
problem-solving techniques that integrate multiple pieces of
information. Improved approach to integration by starting with the
antiderivatives. The inclusion of tabular integration by parts in
Chapter 6. Enhanced coverage of first-order linear differential
equations in Chapter 7. Two new sections on Laplace transforms have
been introduced in Chapter 15, as well as material on how to solve
second-order differential equations using Laplace transforms.

Routley-Meyer Ternary Relational Semantics for Intuitionistic-type
Negations examines how to introduce intuitionistic-type negations
into RM-semantics. RM-semantics is highly malleable and capable of
modeling families of logics which are very different from each
other. This semantics was introduced in the early 1970s, and was
devised for interpreting relevance logics. In RM-semantics,
negation is interpreted by means of the Routley operator, which has
been almost exclusively used for modeling De Morgan negations. This
book provides research on particular features of
intuitionistic-type of negations in RM-semantics, while also
defining the basic systems and many of their extensions by using
models with or without a set of designated points.
New Publication! Based on years of experience and prior
publications, the NEW two-volume book, STEM RESEARCH for STUDENTS,
is a vital resource for K-12 teachers, higher education faculty,
and their students. In Volume One, students acquire the
fundamentals and apply them to their investigations: Conduct
experiments and refine the design and procedures; Construct data
tables and graphs, use descriptive statistics, and make sense of an
experiment; Meet a human need by designing, building, and testing a
model; Communicate findings through reports and interactions with
peers; Apply mathematical concepts to data including ratio and
proportional relationships, geometry and measurement, algebra, and
statistics. STEM Research for Students, Volume 1, is: Student
friendly! Chapters contain investigations with readily available
materials, explanations of major concepts, practice sets, and
formative assessment tools. Use as a sequence or as individual
units of study for specific content. STEM encompassing! For each
core experiment, students have multiple options for making
connections to various scientific disciplines, engineering, and
mathematics. Teacher enhanced! Each chapter contains learning
objectives and assessment tools checklists or rubrics. Answers to
the practice sets are available on a secure Kendall Hunt web site.
Standards aligned! All chapters are aligned with the Next
Generation Science Standards, Common Core Standards for Mathematics
and Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects, and the
International Standards for Technology in Education Standards for
Students. Available in print and e-Book formats, STEM Research for
Students, Volume 1, may be used: As a supplemental text in upper
elementary, middle, and senior high classrooms; As a core text for
introductory research courses and STEM research clubs; For

Is there a God?
How did it all begin?
Can we predict the future?
What is inside a black hole?
Is there other intelligent life in the universe?
Will artificial intelligence outsmart us?
How do we shape the future?
Will we survive on Earth?
Should we colonise space?
Is time travel possible?
Throughout his extraordinary career, Stephen Hawking expanded our
understanding of the universe and unravelled some of its greatest
mysteries. But even as his theoretical work on black holes, imaginary
time and multiple histories took his mind to the furthest reaches of
space, Hawking always believed that science could also be used to fix
the problems on our planet.
And now, as we face potentially catastrophic changes here on Earth -
from climate change to dwindling natural resources to the threat of
artificial super-intelligence - Stephen Hawking turns his attention to
the most urgent issues for humankind.
Wide-ranging, intellectually stimulating, passionately argued, and
infused with his characteristic humour, Brief Answers to the Big
Questions, the final book from one of the greatest minds in history, is
a personal view on the challenges we face as a human race, and where
we, as a planet, are heading next.
