Sustaining Moore's Law - Uncertainty Leading to a Certainty of IoT Revolution (Paperback): Apek Mulay Sustaining Moore's Law - Uncertainty Leading to a Certainty of IoT Revolution (Paperback)
Apek Mulay
R982 Discovery Miles 9 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In 1965, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, in ""Cramming more components onto Integrated Circuits"" in Electronics Magazine (April 19, 1965), made the observation that, in the history of computing hardware, the number of transistors on integrated circuits doubles approximately every two years. Since its inception in 1965 until recent times, this law has been used in the semiconductor industry to guide investments for long-term planning as well as to set targets for research and development. These investments have helped in a productive utilization of wealth, which created more employment opportunities for semiconductor industry professionals. In this way, the development of Moore's Law has helped sustain the progress of today's knowledge-based economy. While Moore's Law has, on one hand, helped drive investments toward technological and economic growth, thereby benefiting the consumers with more powerful electronic gadgets, Moore's Law has indirectly also helped to fuel other innovations in the global economy. However, the Law of diminishing returns is now questioning the sustainability of further evolution of Moore's Law and its ability to sustain the progress of today's knowledge based economy. The lack of liquidity in the global economy is truly bringing the entire industry to a standstill and the dark clouds of an economic depression are hovering over the global economy. What factors have been ignored by the global semiconductor industry leading to a demise of Moore's Law? Do the existing business models prevalent in the semiconductor industry pose any problems? Have supply chains made that progress unsustainable? In today's globalized world, have businesses been able to sustain national interests while driving the progress of Moore's Law? Could the semiconductor industry help the entire global economy move toward a radiance of the new crimson dawn, beyond the veil of the darkest night by sustaining the progress of Moore's Law? The entire semiconductor industry is now clamoring for a fresh approach to overcome existing barriers to the progress of Moore's Law, and this book delivers just that. Moore's Law can easily continue for the foreseeable future if the chip manufacturing industry becomes sustainable by having a balanced economy. The sustainable progress of Moore's Law advocates the ""heresy"" of transforming the current economic orthodoxy of monopoly capitalism into free-market capitalism. The next big thing that everybody is looking forward to after mobile revolution is the ""Internet of Things"" (IoT) revolution. While some analysts forecast that the IoT market would achieve 5.4 billion connections worldwide by 2020, the poor consumer purchasing power in global economy makes this forecast truly questionable. Sustaining Moore's Law presents a blueprint for sustaining the progress of Moore's Law to bring about IoT Revolution in the global economy.

Distributed Algorithms for Message-Passing Systems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2013): Michel Raynal Distributed Algorithms for Message-Passing Systems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2013)
Michel Raynal
R3,106 Discovery Miles 31 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Distributed computing is at the heart of many applications. It arises as soon as one has to solve a problem in terms of entities -- such as processes, peers, processors, nodes, or agents -- that individually have only a partial knowledge of the many input parameters associated with the problem. In particular each entity cooperating towards the common goal cannot have an instantaneous knowledge of the current state of the other entities. Whereas parallel computing is mainly concerned with 'efficiency', and real-time computing is mainly concerned with 'on-time computing', distributed computing is mainly concerned with 'mastering uncertainty' created by issues such as the multiplicity of control flows, asynchronous communication, unstable behaviors, mobility, and dynamicity. While some distributed algorithms consist of a few lines only, their behavior can be difficult to understand and their properties hard to state and prove. The aim of this book is to present in a comprehensive way the basic notions, concepts, and algorithms of distributed computing when the distributed entities cooperate by sending and receiving messages on top of an asynchronous network. The book is composed of seventeen chapters structured into six parts: distributed graph algorithms, in particular what makes them different from sequential or parallel algorithms; logical time and global states, the core of the book; mutual exclusion and resource allocation; high-level communication abstractions; distributed detection of properties; and distributed shared memory. The author establishes clear objectives per chapter and the content is supported throughout with illustrative examples, summaries, exercises, and annotated bibliographies. This book constitutes an introduction to distributed computing and is suitable for advanced undergraduate students or graduate students in computer science and computer engineering, graduate students in mathematics interested in distributed computing, and practitioners and engineers involved in the design and implementation of distributed applications. The reader should have a basic knowledge of algorithms and operating systems.

Design Concepts for a Virtualizable Embedded MPSoC Architecture - Enabling Virtualization in Embedded Multi-Processor Systems... Design Concepts for a Virtualizable Embedded MPSoC Architecture - Enabling Virtualization in Embedded Multi-Processor Systems (Paperback)
Alexander Biedermann
R1,887 Discovery Miles 18 870 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Alexander Biedermann presents a generic hardware-based virtualization approach, which may transform an array of any off-the-shelf embedded processors into a multi-processor system with high execution dynamism. Based on this approach, he highlights concepts for the design of energy aware systems, self-healing systems as well as parallelized systems. For the latter, the novel so-called Agile Processing scheme is introduced by the author, which enables a seamless transition between sequential and parallel execution schemes. The design of such virtualizable systems is further aided by introduction of a dedicated design framework, which integrates into existing, commercial workflows. As a result, this book provides comprehensive design flows for the design of embedded multi-processor systems-on-chip.

Field-Coupled Nanocomputing - Paradigms, Progress, and Perspectives (Paperback, 2014 ed.): Neal G. Anderson, Sanjukta Bhanja Field-Coupled Nanocomputing - Paradigms, Progress, and Perspectives (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
Neal G. Anderson, Sanjukta Bhanja
R2,428 Discovery Miles 24 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Field-coupled nanocomputing (FCN) paradigms offer fundamentally new approaches to digital information processing that do not utilize transistors or require charge transport. Information transfer and computation are achieved in FCN via local field interactions between nanoscale building blocks that are organized in patterned arrays. Several FCN paradigms are currently under active investigation, including quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA), molecular quantum cellular automata (MQCA), nanomagnetic logic (NML), and atomic quantum cellular automata (AQCA). Each of these paradigms has a number of unique features that make it attractive as a candidate for post-CMOS nanocomputing, and each faces critical challenges to realization.

This State-of-the-Art-Survey provides a snapshot of the current developments and novel research directions in the area of FCN. The book is divided into five sections. The first part, Field-Coupled Nanocomputing Paradigms, provides valuable background information and perspectives on the QDCA, MQCA, NML, and AQCA paradigms and their evolution. The second section, Circuits and Architectures, addresses a wide variety of current research on FCN clocking strategies, logic synthesis, circuit design and test, logic-in-memory, hardware security, and architecture. The third section, Modeling and Simulation, considers the theoretical modeling and computer simulation of large FCN circuits, as well as the use of simulations for gleaning physical insight into elementary FCN building blocks. The fourth section, Irreversibility and Dissipation, considers the dissipative consequences of irreversible information loss in FCN circuits, their quantification, and their connection to circuit structure. The fifth section, The Road Ahead: Opportunities and Challenges, includes an edited transcript of the panel discussion that concluded the FCN 13 workshop."

Architecture Description Languages is an essential reference for both academic and professional researchers in the field of system engineering and design. The papers presented in this volume were selected from the workshop of the same name that was held as part of the World Computer Congress 2004 Conference, held in Toulouse, France in August 2004. This collection presents significant research and innovative developments and applications from both academic researchers and industry practitioners on topics ranging from Semantics to Tool and Development Environments. The aim of an ADL is to formally describe software and hardware architectures. Usually, an ADL describes components, their interfaces, their structures, their interactions (structure of data flow and control flow) and the mappings to hardware systems. A major goal of such description is to allow analysis with respect to several aspects like timing, safety, reliability. The papers in this state-of-the-art volume cover such topics of interest as components, connectors, composition; semantics and formalization; verification, simulation and test; tools and development environments; standardization; industrial projects. To encourage closer interaction between academic and industrial networking research communities, the workshop welcomed academic research papers as well as industrial contributions, and both are included here. Which makes this collection important not only for ADL experts and researchers, but also for all teachers and administrators interested in ADL.

The Heinz Nixdorf Museum Forum (HNF) is the world's largest c- puter museum and is dedicated to portraying the past, present and future of information technology. In the "Year of Informatics 2006" the HNF was particularly keen to examine the history of this still quite young discipline. The short-lived nature of information technologies means that individuals, inventions, devices, institutes and companies"age" more rapidly than in many other specialties. And in the nature of things the group of computer pioneers from the early days is growing smaller all the time. To supplement a planned new exhibit on "Software and Inform- ics" at the HNF, the idea arose of recording the history of informatics in an accompanying publication. Mysearchforsuitablesourcesandauthorsveryquickly cameupwith the right answer, the very rst name in Germany: Friedrich L. Bauer, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the TU in Munich, one of the - thers of informatics in Germany and for decades the indefatigable author of the"Historical Notes" column of the journal Informatik Spektrum. Friedrich L. Bauer was already the author of two works on the history of informatics, published in different decades and in different books. Both of them are notable for their knowledgeable, extremely comp- hensive and yet compact style. My obvious course was to motivate this author to amalgamate, supplement and illustrate his previous work.

Modeling Digital Switching Circuits with Linear Algebra describes an approach for modeling digital information and circuitry that is an alternative to Boolean algebra. While the Boolean algebraic model has been wildly successful and is responsible for many advances in modern information technology, the approach described in this book offers new insight and different ways of solving problems. Modeling the bit as a vector instead of a scalar value in the set {0, 1} allows digital circuits to be characterized with transfer functions in the form of a linear transformation matrix. The use of transfer functions is ubiquitous in many areas of engineering and their rich background in linear systems theory and signal processing is easily applied to digital switching circuits with this model. The common tasks of circuit simulation and justification are specific examples of the application of the linear algebraic model and are described in detail. The advantages offered by the new model as compared to traditional methods are emphasized throughout the book. Furthermore, the new approach is easily generalized to other types of information processing circuits such as those based upon multiple-valued or quantum logic; thus providing a unifying mathematical framework common to each of these areas. Modeling Digital Switching Circuits with Linear Algebra provides a blend of theoretical concepts and practical issues involved in implementing the method for circuit design tasks. Data structures are described and are shown to not require any more resources for representing the underlying matrices and vectors than those currently used in modern electronic design automation (EDA) tools based on the Boolean model. Algorithms are described that perform simulation, justification, and other common EDA tasks in an efficient manner that are competitive with conventional design tools. The linear algebraic model can be used to implement common EDA tasks directly upon a structural netlist thus avoiding the intermediate step of transforming a circuit description into a representation of a set of switching functions as is commonly the case when conventional Boolean techniques are used. Implementation results are provided that empirically demonstrate the practicality of the linear algebraic model.

What do you get when you combine an electronics hobbyist, hacker, garage mechanic, kitchen table inventor, tinkerer, and entrepreneur? A maker, of course. Playful and creative, makers are--through expertise and experimentation--creating art, products, and processes that are helping change the way all of us think and interact with the world. As you'll see from the 20 interviews in Makers at Work, inquisitive makers are just as apt to pick up a laser cutter or Arduino or Raspberry Pi as a wrench to fashion something new. One maker powered a scooter with a battery-operated drill. Another made a messenger bag smart like a phone. Then there's the guy who created a sensor that sends an alert to his phone whenever someone opens the door of his mailbox; the teen who made not just a motorized skateboard, but one with treads that works on grass; and the architect/builder who made a transportable front porch so he could move it to the rear of the house to enjoy sunsets. Crazy as foxes, makers--working in the spirit of Tesla, Wozniak, Edison, Gates, Musk and many others--can bring sophisticated products to the people or to the market as fast or faster than large corporations. In so doing, they are blazing trails tomorrow's inventors, programmers, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs will wander down to come up with the next big things. And they are not just enabling new technologies and devices--they are changing the way these devices are funded, manufactured, assembled, and delivered. Makers at Work puts a spotlight on the maker mindset and motivation of those who are reinventing the world one object or idea at a time. It gives you a firsthand look at the maker culture from the people who are creating it. They may hail from many professions and industries but they are all united in their love of building things--and making life more fun, interesting, and profitable. You will: * Meet the individuals who define what it means to be a maker. * Learn about the tools and technologies driving the new industrial revolution. * Discover ways to scale your weekend project into a profitable business. The new masters of the Makerverse ask one question: Can it be done? As these interviews will show, yes it can. What you'll learn You will: * Learn about 3d printing and how it is changing manufacturing. * Discover new software tools for designing things on your own.* Learn how to source parts, code, or ideas for your creations. * Meet maker pioneers who helped open up a new world, and makers who have used crowdfunding to support their efforts. * Uncover recipes for success or failure when bringing physical products to market. * Learn ways to scale your weekend project into a profitable business from experienced entrepreneurs. * Learn how open-source hardware and software is enabling new classes of products by removing the barrier of entry for inventors. * Open your mind to new ideas, methods, things, and possibilities. Who this book is for This book is for anyone with an independent spirit, creative bent, or natural curiosity who believes you can create whatever your mind can conceive and wants to see how others have done just that.
