San Francisco based artist Ian Johnson has been busy since his 2008 monograph Beauty is a Rare Thing. Six solo shows and a group exhibition later, his work has evolved while remaining jarringly cool and full of life. This new book from Paper Museum Press presents new paintings and drawings by Johnson in his signature style: portraits of jazz musicians from the '40s, '50s, and '60s produced using gouache, acrylic, or pen on paper or wood panel. Johnson combines abstract backgrounds with figurative representations to create jaw-dropping pieces that succeed at evoking the music of each artist. Creative geometric compositions of space and color unfold to express the tone of each musician's output. Ian Johnson's work has been featured in Juxtapoz and Jazz Colours and he has created illustrations for The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Wax Poetics, and The New Yorker.

Lisa Dickinson Michaux, Gabriel P Weisburg
R733 Discovery Miles 7 330 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Regarded as one of the countryOs foremost scholars of 19th-century French art, Gabriel P. Weisberg has worked closely with his wife, Yvonne, to amass a significant collection of art. For nearly forty years the Weisbergs have used their knowledge and connoisseurship to unearth exceptional drawings, notably those with realist and naturalist themes. The result is a collection, represented by the 36 artists included here, that illuminates the scope and diversity of French and Belgian draftsmanship from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century. The works range from meticulous charcoal studies to loose watercolor sketches, from layered pastels to sheets that combine multiple mediums in innovative ways. From preliminary studies for mural designs to highly finished landscapes, the drawings gathered here expand our view of this momentous period in the history of art. Lisa Dickinson Michaux is acting co-director of prints and drawings at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts."

Marc Brandenburg - Hirnsturm II (Paperback): Deutsche Bank Ag And Palaispopulaire Marc Brandenburg - Hirnsturm II (Paperback)
Deutsche Bank Ag And Palaispopulaire
R1,416 Discovery Miles 14 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Marc Brandenburg (* 1965) strolls through cities, photographing his impressions and then drawing them “like a human photocopier.” In this almost meditative process, he finds beauty in social conditions. His pencil drawings, reversed into negatives, capture everyday, ephemeral motifs. Brandenburg is interested in moments when inner and outer states unite, when human beings merge with their costumes, their clothing, or their dwellings. Formal and conceptual aspects of drawing, as well as a fundamental examination of representation, are more important to him than the motifs themselves. The publication Hirnsturm II accompanies the exhibition of the same name, a visual essay that combines drawings from a period of over 25 years with more recent works. Text in English and German.

In February 1972 Henry Moore's sculpture studios in the English countryside at Much Hadham were filled with the preparations for his retrospective exhibition at Florence. In search of peace and quiet, he went into a smaller room overlooking the fields where a local farmer grazed his sheep. The sheep came very close to the window, attracting his attention, and he began to draw them. Initially he saw them as nothing more than four-legged balls of wool, but his vision changed as he explored what they were really like - the way they moved, the shape of their bodies under the fleece. They also developed strong human and biblical associations, and the sight of a ewe with her lamb evoked the mother-and-child theme - a large form sheltering a small one - which has been important to Henry Moore in all his work. He drew the sheep again that summer after they were shorn, when he could see the shapes of the bodies which had been covered by wool. Solid in form, sudden and vigorous in movement, Henry Moore's sheep are created through a network of swirling and zigzagging lines in the rapid and (in Moore's hands) sensitive medium of ballpoint pen. The effect is both familiar and monumental; as Lor

Computers can calculate perspective angles and create a drawing for us, but the spontaneity of mark making, the tactile quality of a writing surface, the weight of a drawing instrument, and the immediacy of the human touch are sensations that keep traditional drawing skills perpetually relevant. The sensuality and convenience of the hand persists and will survive as a valuable communication tool, as will the need to accurately express your ideas on paper. As a professional, understanding the foundations of drawing, how we process images, and how we interpret what we see are principal skills. Understanding linear perspective enables artists to accurately communicate their ideas on paper. The Complete Guide to Perspective Drawing offers a step-by-step guide for the beginner as well as the advanced student on how to draw in one-point through six-point perspective and how to make scientifically accurate conceptual illustrations from simple to complex situations.

Drawing the Nude - Structure, Anatomy and Observation (Paperback): Stuart Elliot Drawing the Nude - Structure, Anatomy and Observation (Paperback)
Stuart Elliot
R523 Discovery Miles 5 230 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Drawing the Nude is an exciting approach to drawing the human body. Divided into three parts, on structure, anatomy and observation, it introduces a set of principles and develops a treasury of ideas for the artist to follow. Whilst recognizing the importance of observation, it focuses more on a conceptual understanding of the construction of the body in anatomical terms. In doing so, it encourages the cultivation of more informed observation and accommodates those who work from memory, imagination and invention.

Learn to draw colossal dragons and legendary heroes!

It was a stormy night in Northern Wales when I and my apprentice, Conceil, had to take shelter in an old stalkers cottage along Caernarfon Bay. A peat fire was lit, and our guide, Sir Geoffrey Guest, regaled us with ancient stories of dragons while, outside, the gale battered the coastline....

What follows is a retelling of classical legends, plucked from the folklore of cultures spread across time and around the world, from ancient Greece and China to Medieval England and Norse mythology. You'll discover the epochal dragons who reigned over snow and sea; those with wings and flaming maws; those who thwarted Beowulf in underground lairs; and those slain by Hercules' mighty sword.

Dracopedia Legends presents 13 epic tales of heroes vanquishing dragons, accompanied by lavish dragon illustrations inspired by the myths. Acting as both a storybook and art guide, each chapter also includes in-depth instructions to reveal how to conceptualize, research and design every iconic battle scene, broken down into multiple stages so you can create your own commanding and evocative narrative paintings.

Includes:

- 13 tales of the most legendary dragons from around the world

- Instructions for drawing and painting each climactic clash between hero and beast

- How to design, sketch and develop illustrations into layered and detailed final paintings

This delightful homage to Pulcinella (or Punch as he is referred to in English) contains over one hundred extraordinary pencil illustrations, some of which are depicted in comic-strip style. Divided into several scenes, it features the oddly surreal and globally recognised character that originated in seventeenth-century comedic theatre and became a fixture in Neapolitan puppetry. Distinguished by a long nose and typically dressed in white with a black mask, Pulcinella is often depicted in various kinds of misadventures and singing about themes of love, hunger, and money. In the typical fashion of author Luigi Serafini, Pulcinellopaedia Seraphiniana is created in a unique language all its own, and is filled with fascinating and mysterious illustrations that require thorough examination and inference to decipher what the artist is intending to portray. Written by Serafini s imaginative coauthor and alter ego C. Petrulo, who represents Pulcinella himself, the book artfully presents the struggles of a rebellious antihero who must come to grips with the difficulties of everyday life. First published in 1984 and since revised by the author, this volume is an exquisite treasure that has intrigued readers for more than thirty years. Designed as a handsome companion volume ready to take its place alongside the bestselling Codex Seraphinianus, the Pulcinellopaedia is akin to a missing chapter or coda to the Codex that no fan of Luigi Serafini s work will want to miss.
