Found in our archives, the Black's Sketchbooks are a series of
books produced in the early 20th century by a group of well-known
artists. Each book contains pen sketches of iconic English and
Scottish cities and counties. There are also some books on
Continental cities such as Paris and Venice. The result is a
charming series of books that present a fascinating look at British
and European locations as they were almost a century ago. This
title is a delightful look at Cambridge as it was in 1913.

The first comprehensive collection of Annette Messager's drawings,
including 150 works made over the last ten years, which constitute
an invaluable lexicon to the mind and work of a trailblazing
iconoclast. Messager redefined the role of women making art and the
very nature of sculpture - accomplishments which won her the
coveted Golden Lion for best national pavilion at the 51st Venice
Biennale in 2005 and the Praemium Imperiale for sculpture in 2016.
Messager's subjects range from animal to human, feminist activists
to devotional figures, skeletons to ghosts. She broaches the grand
themes of love, life, death and the fairy tales, mythologies,
superstitions and vanities that lie beneath.
Learn the unique art of crosshatching and create stunning works of
art with expert guidance from August Lamm. How to Crosshatch in Pen
& Ink begins with a potted history of the artform, and
elucidates exactly what crosshatching entails, and where it came
from. After a helpful exploration of the materials and media that a
crosshatcher may need, there then begins a practical guide to the
very basics of crosshatching, approaching concepts such as how to
look accurately, and how to depict light, shape, and shadow. Once
readers have the essentials under their belt, there are more
complicated subjects such as anatomy, portraiture and still lifes
to tackle. For each topic, August uses a combination of fine art
examples, illustrations and step-by-step tutorials to take the
reader through the fascinating and accessible process of
crosshatching, from perception to execution. This is the essential,
comprehensive guide to this fascinating artform, and will appeal to
complete beginners alongside long-time aficionados of the practice.
In 1912-1913, James Ensor produced a series of 32 drawings in
coloured pencil titled Scenes de la vie du Christ [Scenes from the
life of Christ]. Each drawing on paper measures about 15 by 21 cm.
The series depicts different episodes from the lives of Jesus and
the Virgin Mary. In it, Ensor managed to combine the sublime and
the grotesque in an unsurpassed manner. Some compositions are quite
conventional, others typically 'Ensorian', and some even humorous.
Among the works in the series is a drawing in which Ensor portrays
himself as Christ, confronted with a dozen Belgian art critics who
have gathered before him. In 1929 the drawings were made into
lithographs and published in the form of an album by Galerie
Georges Giroux in Brussels. These drawings can be considered as a
link between the Ostend master's early and later oeuvre. The series
combines various motifs which Ensor also executed in oil paint. The
author of the work, Xavier Tricot, also pays close attention to the
figure of Christ in James Ensor's work. From 1885 onward, the
figure of Christ occupied a central position in Ensor's oeuvre. In
some of his works, the artist identified with the Messiah.
