Focusing on the use of text in relation to a specific category of
image - the photographic image - this book argues for a new
appreciation of the relationship between texts and photographs in
an age that seems to be dominated by visual images. With reference
to a range of traditional and new media forms, and addressing such
issues as gender, ethnicity, class, identity politics and
biography, the author introduces a new perspective for the use and
understanding of the symbiotic relationships that can exist between
photographs and texts in the production of sociological, cultural
and historical narratives: lamination. Drawing on the work of
Barthes and Benjamin, the book explores the material forms of
publications that involve the combination of photographs and texts,
such as newspapers and journalism, documentary archives, visual
ethnographies and on-line social networks, showing how text and
image are contexts for one another and so negotiate meaning between
themselves. A challenge to the recent 'visual turn' in sociology
and cultural studies, which argues - without privileging text or
image - for the significance of text in relation to visual images
and the production of combined meanings, Interpreting Visual
Ethnography will appeal to scholars of sociology, anthropology and
media studies with interests in theory, visual methods and text and
meaning.

As soon as Bill Wyman was given a camera as a young boy, he quickly
developed a passion for photography. After joining what would
become the world's greatest rock 'n' roll band, Wyman continued his
hobby. When he didn't have his bass, he had his camera. The result
is an arresting, insightful and often poignant collection of
photographs, showing his exclusive inside view of the band. From
travelling to relaxing, backstage and on, Stones From the Inside is
a unique view captured by a man who was there, every step of the
way. Along with the images of the band at work and play, Wyman
includes remarkable images of those along for the ride, from John
Lennon, Eric Clapton, David Bowie and Iggy Pop to John Belushi and
Dan Aykroyd. To accompany his photographs, Wyman offers up
wonderful insights, anecdotes and behind-the-photo stories, giving
all us a front-row seat and backstage pass to what it was like to
be there, as music history was made as a member of The Rolling
Stones. Limited to just 300 copies, this slipcased edition is
accompanied by a print.

Paris Park Photographs features spectacular images from a dozen
public parks and gardens in and near France's capital city.
Exploring many of the same places that photographer Eugene Atget
(1857-1927) made famous a century ago, Michael Kolster references
the pleasures and pitfalls of wandering alone amongst trees and
plants and sculpture, unkempt and formally designed places,
tempered by the knowledge that the modern world with all its
congestion is only a few short steps away. These intimate yet
inherently expansive views of Paris's parks invite closer scrutiny
of the encounters awaiting us at the edges of the well-worn paths
defining our daily lives. Few people venture into the frame of
Kolster's photographs, but the promise of a renewed sense of hope
and community resides in the details of his visual encounters and
the moments of his heightened attention. Each picture speaks to us
as a moment in time, even as the sequence suggests a choreography
of place, one that can vary daily along with the changing moods and
light of each park. Paris Park Photographs is presented in a
bilingual English/French edition and concludes with an afterword by
Michelle Kuo. Of note is how the book's design is inspired by
Walker Evans's 1938 classic work, American Photographs, making
Kolster's book of immediate interest to photo and book collectors.
For the first time, iconic fetish photographer G. Elliott Simpson

photographer manages to approach the topic in a tasteful way,
allowing viewers from the outside to explore an unknown world of
lust and desire.
2016 was 50 years on from when District Six was declared a whites only area and this publication commemorates this event in our history. This revised edition (in a smaller format aimed at the tourist market) of this beautiful book shows poignant images from Breytenbach’s collection of District Six during the 1970s before
the area was dramatically demolished by the apartheid government. It is an historical record about the inhabitants and their surroundings of that time and was compiled over a period of five years.
The Cape Town area known as District Six (so called for its geographic position on the municipal map of the city) developed into a dense residential area close to the centre of Cape Town during the second part of the nineteenth century. Home to a diverse community with a wide range of historical origins, neglect on the
part of landlords and local authorities led to the area becoming rundown. The government repeatedly directed requests to the city council and the landlords – most of whom were white and not residing in the area – to upgrade what was fast becoming a slum on the doorstep of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. On
11 February 1966, the government declared District Six a white area under the Group Areas Act, and the wholesale removal of the inhabitants was started – mainly to areas away from the city.
This process took fifteen years and some 60 000 people were removed.
Once the hunting reserve of kings and princes, today the Forest of
Bowland is both a recreational haven for the public and a
biodiverse region of international importance. This lavishly
illustrated book focuses on the sweeping fells which form the very
heart of a 312 square mile Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This
celebration of nature, landscape and recreation would be incomplete
without some exploration of the area's two most popular activities:
walking and bird watching. The author tackles both in entertaining
essays on the freedom to roam, for families as well as serious
fell-walkers, and on an intriguing tale of dark deeds among
feathered friends and foes. In this stunning book, Andy Stansfield
fills the pages with evocative images which capture the changes in
colour and character throughout the seasons, picking out telling
details as well as magnificent panoramas.
Think you know photography? Think again. Through a carefully
curated selection of quotes and images, this book reveals what
matters most to the masters of photography. With 50 iconic images

Photographs series, you'll learn what photography actually means to
the giants of the genres and how they developed their distinctive
visual styles.
This is a directory of plants whose greatest attributes in the
garden lie in their form and foliage, not merely in their flowers.
Ornamental foliage plants for your garden features over 2000 plants
from all over the world, many of which are useful cultivars,
varieties or forms. They have been selected for their value in the
landscaping of gardens, be they big or small. Their claims to fame
may be their architectural form, their intriguing texture, their
unusual habit, their miniature or immense size, or their
suitability for a particular situation, such as for topiary, a
conservatory or to provide winter colour. Many plants have been
chosen for their striking leaves, which may be patterned, enormous,
dissected or magnificently coloured. Every entry has notes on
cultivation and use, and is coded to correspond with the climatic
zones of the world map at the front of the title. There are at
least 1000 colour photographs and 600 line drawings. Gardeners and
landscapers have become increasingly aware of how easy foliage
plants are to care for and what a magnificent palette they provide
for simple, clean garden design. Many lend themselves to small
formal gardens for urban spaces, while trees and mass plantings can
give perspective and interesting effects in larger gardens. Style
is often a matter of restraint and the judicious use of foliage
plants sometimes brings to a garden a greater sense of peace and
relaxation than one cluttered with colourful flowers.

working docks and warehouses, the development of the web of bridges
that now links north and south, barges, sailing ships and warships,
the great flood defences and a tiny beach that flourished briefly
at the Tower of London.Featuring the work of pioneers of
photography and some of the great topographical photographers of
the 20th century, and with a fascinating commentary by Stephen
Croad, The Thames Through Time chronicles the ebb and flow of the

The real soccer fields of South Africa is a coffee-table book of
photographs of soccer fields around South Africa. The focus of the
title is on the fields and spaces used daily by the diverse people
of South Africa, and less on the large stadiums and soccer clubs. A
selection of articles and special features focus on the meaning of
these spaces and the game of soccer to South Africans. While the
title showcases many excellent photographs by Christiaan Vorster
himself, it is a compilation of images from a diverse range of
sources: Kick Off Magazine, The DreamFields Project, the
Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, the Extra-Mural
Education Project, Scott Smith, and Colwyn Thomas, to name a few.
More than celebrate the foundation of soccer in South Africa, the
title will contribute to South African soccer pride by donating 10%
sales to The Dreamfields Project, and facilitate exhibition of the
work from EMEP.
Australia is a collection of iconic images collaged to create a
quintessential Australian experience, showing the cities and
countryside on offer. This book of photographs is designed to take
the viewer on a trip around Australia and would appeal to the
tourist and local alike. Having travelled through Europe as a
tourist taking photographs of any thing and everything, Susan
Peters wondered what it would be like to do the same in her own
country. Australia is the result. Starting her tour in Sydney, then
Canberra and on to Melbourne. Queensland is well represented with
images of Brisbane, the Gold Coast, The Whitsundays and Cairns.
Darwin and Uluru, Perth, South Australia and Tasmania are all
included. A key figure in the establishment of the Greater
Newcastle Building Society. This book sets out to chart the
remarkable career of this inspirational Novocastrian.
