Magnum Dogs is the ultimate collection of canine photography for
the discerning dog lover, bringing together a brilliantly diverse
and cheering selection that showcases the visual wit and skill of
the Magnum team. It features some 180 photographs of dogs from
across the world, organized into five thematic chapters -
Streetwise, Best in Show, At the Beach, Behind the Scenes and It's
a Dog's Life. Canine encounters include immaculately coiffured
showdogs captured in wryly observed photography from the likes of
Martin Parr and Harry Gruyaert, or intimate glimpses of Hollywood
stars alongside their trusted, four-legged confidants, as seen
through the lenses of Eve Arnold and Dennis Stock. Whether
depicting strays roaming the streets of Colombia or pampered
pooches lounging in Parisian apartments, these photos brim with
affection, humour and insight into the human as well as canine
condition. Packaged in an irresistible gift format, this is the
perfect book not just for fans of the very best photography of
dogs, but for anyone, around the world, who is a 'dog person' at
heart. With 180 illustrations in colour
Diesel was one of the first fashion labels to break the classic
rules of advertising and market itself with irony and humor. Its
longtime slogan "For Successful Living" defined Diesel's insouciant
image as well as its ads, which parody conventional commercial
messages. Published on the occasion of Diesel's thirtieth
anniversary, this lavishly produced volume features the iconic
photography and ads from this forward-thinking company, created by
groundbreaking photographers such as Terry Richardson, David La
Chapelle, and Ellen Von Unwerth, among others. Also included is a
DVD containing television commercials and other innovative video
materials from Diesel's advertising archive.
No place sums up the Bristol attitude of artistic creation and
rebellion as Stokes Croft and Montpelier. With its world-renowned
street art, thriving local scene and diverse cultural history,
Stokes Croft has for decades been resisting the inevitable creep of
corporate interests, but more importantly offers up an alternative.
Colin's photographs take you under the skin of the people,
cultures, and place in this unique area of the city, where lives
intersect and a new world is being created every day.
Marzena Pogorzaly made two trips to Havana. There, she walked the
streets of Havana Vieja and El Centro, the old districts, trying to
capture the melancholy beauty and decay of the city, and its
inhabitants. Pogorzaly's calmly gorgeous images are not directly
concerned with politics, but as someone who grew up in
pre-Solidarity Poland, she combines mature scepticism about
communist regimes with due respect for some of its achievements. As
she explains in her introduction: "Some of it was familiar. I was
born, and grew up, behind the Iron Curtain. I immediately felt at
home with the way The System worked, or rather the way it did not.
But where the palette of my homeland was dull, drab and
irredeemably monochrome, here I found a vivid treasure chest of
visual epiphanies." Her chief care is for people, either viewed
directly or by means of the traces they leave: posters of Che
Guevara, neglected chairs, rickety old American cars. Her
photographs are entirely without sentimentality but rich in that
tradition of humanism which sees the deeper qualities that unite us
with strangers, as well as the surface differences that divide us.
Her Cubans are not pathetic victims of a dictatorship but a
handsome, vital, proud and resourceful people.
Seattle Then and Now presents archival photos along with modern
views of the same sites as they appear today, highlighting some of
the best-loved places in the city along with striking examples of
modern architecture that help make Seattle such a vibrant and
innovative city. Seattle's growth from a small lumber town to one
of the world's most influential urban centers has been spectacular.
Little more than a century ago, the city was made up of dirt roads
and timber buildings. The arrival of the Great Northern Railroad in
1893 and the start of the Klondike gold rush in 1897 changed all
that. Businesses in Seattle are still booming today, but they are
now less dependent on location and more on inspiration. Seattle
Then and Now presents archival photos along with modern views of
the same sites as they appear today, highlighting some of the
best-loved places in the city along with striking examples of
modern architecture that help make Seattle such a vibrant and
innovative city.
"Into the Sunset" examines how photography has pictured,
established and transformed the idea of the American West, from
1850 to the present. The development of photography coincided with
the exploration and settlement of the West, and this simultaneous
growth resulted in a complex relationship that has shaped the
perception of that region's physical and social landscape to this
day. Published to accompany a major exhibition at The Museum of
Modern Art, New York, "Into the Sunset" charts changing myths and
cultural attitudes about the West through photographs dating from
the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries. An expansive and
dynamic survey, it brings together photographers as diverse as
Carleton E. Watkins and Stephen Shore, Darius Kinsey and Dorothea
Lange, Robert Frank and Cindy Sherman, an unknown daguerreotypist
and Richard Prince. More than 120 works are organized thematically
to highlight the artists' differing views of the West's land and
people.
A perfect example of modern photography, "Budapest - Photography By
Richard J Jones" is photographic homage to the city, it's
architecture and history. Through the use of textural overlays,
grain, contrast and colour, the photographic infra-red and colour
digital images have been pushed into a gritty, grungy, abstract
artist world, creating surreal landscapes. This will make a great
coffee table book, conversation starter or inspiration for budding
photographer. For those that love Budapest, this will be a timeless
journey through emotion and memories from many of the city's famous
landmarks.
In the mid-1860s Arthur J Munby began to collect the first
mass-produced photographic images of working-class women in
England, recording fascinating details about the women, the places
he purchased the photographs and the raging debates on this new
commercial practice of photography, in accompanying diaries. Many
of these images - not to mention Munby's fascinating diaries - have
never been published before. This book examines this previously
un-investigated archive, offering a fresh and arresting perspective
on the interrelationships between photographic representations of
working-class women, the creation of new identities of class and
gender and the evolution of popular conceptions of photography
itself.
The photographic journey begins in the streets of Jo'burg in the
late 1970's and ends in the rural and desert landscapes of the
millennium. It is not a political A to Z or a documentary of our
political past, but an observation of the lives of ordinary people
and their daily survival choices as they have struggled and
overcome the limiting circumstances of their lives - or simply
reflected the tenor of their times. Most of the images are
unpublished because they were taken in a time when there was no
space for the ordinary. They 'fell through the cracks' because they
were often considered too 'off beat' to make it. These photographs
capture glimpses of life between the cracks before, after and while
the political wheel was turning. They are about how people try to
survive in so many different and extraordinary ways and the
survival choices they make under often extreme conditions of
hardship how they reflected themselves and how I absorbed their
reflections, how they danced with reality, made light in the dark
spaces, embraced each other at great risk.
Atrocities committed by the Nazis during the Holocaust were
photographed more intensely that any before. In the time since the
images were taken they have been subjected to a perplexing variety
of treatments: variously ignored, suppressed, distorted and above
all exploited for propaganda purposes. With the use of many
photographs, including some never before seen, this book traces the
history of this process and asks whether the images can be true
representations of the events they were depicting. Yet their
provenance, Janina Struk argues, has been less important that the
uses to which a wide range of political interests has put them,
from the desperate attempts of the war-time underground to provide
hard evidence of the death camps to the memorial museums of Europe,
the US and Israel today.
Zen Buddhist priest Shunmyo Masuno understands that today's busy
world leaves little time or space for self-reflection, but that a
garden--even in the most urban of spaces--can provide some respite.
In his words, "The garden is a special spiritual place where the
mind dwells." With this in mind, Masuno has designed scores of
spectacular Japanese gardens and landscapes with the aim of helping
people achieve a balanced life in the 21st century. This book
explores Masuno's design process and ideas, which are integral to
his daily Zen training and teachings. It features 15 unique gardens
and contemplative landscapes completed in six countries over as
many years--all thoughtfully described and documented in full-color
photos and drawings. Readers will also find insights on Masuno's
philosophy of garden design and a conversation between the designer
and famed architect Terunobu Fujimori. Zen Garden Design provides
an in-depth examination of Masuno's gardens and landscapes--not
just as beautiful spaces, but as places for meditation and
contemplation.
Captures Britain's countryside together with its flora and fauna.
Encompassing ancient woodlands, fenlands, moorlands, mountain
peaks, boglands and estuaries, Hallett's photographs include red
squirrels, dormice, birds of prey, butterflies and orchids, drawn
together with informative text.
Travelers in Kansas in search of fine art needn't restrict
themselves to the state's many excellent museums. They need look no
further than the walls of their own communities to discover a
remarkable array of murals--artistic creations that are striking,
democratic, and easily accessible. Depicting Civil War history, the
fruits of agriculture, Kansas' diverse cultural roots, and much
more, these long-neglected works are now the subject of Lora Jost
and Dave Loewenstein's fine new book. Jost and Loewenstein, artists
themselves, have crisscrossed Kansas researching and documenting
over 600 murals to promote, preserve, and celebrate this vibrant
public art. Theirs is the first and only book devoted exclusively
to Kansas murals--a striking visual travelogue that offers a new
perspective on the state's culture and history. From unique
small-town creations like Dennis Burghart's The Saga of the Santa
Fe outside the Offerle Cafe to the world-famous John Steuart Curry
painting of John Brown in the state capitol, murals constitute an
enormous public art gallery. Some are socially compelling or were
once the focus of intense controversy. Many are group projects in
which artists have served as coordinators; these murals represent
true expressions of their communities. All show the state as it has
been seen through the eyes of Kansas artists over the past hundred
years. The authors focus on ninety exemplary murals-including
mosaics and friezes-organized by region and featuring full-color
photographs, brief descriptions, and notes on the artists. From
Sacred Heart Cathedral to the Early Childhood Center on the
Potawatomi Prairie Band Reservation, the artworks selected
represent some of the most enduring and powerful images to be found
throughout the state. The book also provides regional locator maps
for travelers and a list of all 600-plus murals with their
locations. A unique resource that attests to the rich diversity of
the mural tradition, this book is an open invitation to visit the
open-air museum of Kansas murals and appreciate the stories they
tell and their place in public life. They may be tucked into urban
landscapes or require travel to out-of-the way locales; some may
even be stained by years of exposure to the elements; but these
expressions of public art are there for the viewing-and now, thanks
to this book, there for the finding.

This Is Mars offers a thrilling visual experience of the surface of
the red planet. The multi-award-winning French editor and designer
Xavier Barral has chosen and composed photographic frames, drawn
from the comprehensive photographic map of Mars made by the U.S.
observation satellite MRO (Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter), to revel
in the wonder of Mars. What Yann Arthus-Bertrand did with a light
aircraft for The Earth from the Air , Barral does for Mars-by
scouring tens of thousands of gigabytes of satellite photographs
available from NASA, seeking out the most distinct images of the
planet's surface. The result is visionary-a great science book, a
unique artist's book, and a stunning object. The photographs are
accompanied by an introduction from research scientist Alfred S.
McEwen, principle investigator of the HiRISE telescope; an essay by
astrophysicist Francis Rocard, who explains the story of Mars's
origins and its evolution; and a timeline by geophysicist Nicolas
Mangold, who demystifies some of Mars's geological history. Now
available as a mid-sized, accessibly priced edition, This Is Mars
will excite lovers of great photobooks, and everyone curious about
the universe and beyond.

and worked in the area. Thatcham Then & Now will delight all

This book explores, through the vision of ten contemporary Iranian
photographers, the contrasts and contradictions that exist in
Iranian Society at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Each
representation is different to the next and each image serves to
represent the main conflict present in Iran today: that of the
power of tradition versus the quest for modernity. Each of the ten
photographers has chosen an aspect of daily life in their country,
for example, a cafe, a shopping mall, and the clerics, with each
serving to show another part of the mosaic of cultural experience
in Iran. One theme that remains constant through all of the images
is that of women, who remain living symbols of the interaction
between change and stagnation. In this book, women test the limits
of the Hijab and their experience is used to represent that of
young women all around the world.

Featuring stunning photography and essays about the world's most
amazing deserts, including the Moab, the Atacama, Mojave, and the
Namib deserts. In these pages we are introduced to landscapes so
vast that time and space are rendered meaningless. The desert lies
bare - sparse and silent in the heavy stillness of the day - a
wilderness that retains a veil of mystery despite contemplation and
obsession. This book explores the gentle fragility of these ancient
landscapes, places that somehow manage to be both remote and yet
strangely intimate.
