This full-color guide presents photographs and history of 41 lighthouses and navigational beacons between Duluth, Minnesota, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Lighthouses of Lake Superior's North Shore is the first comprehensive guide to the lighthouses and navigational beacons from Duluth, Minnesota, to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Noted author and Lake Superior historian Elle Andra-Warner of Thunder Bay, Ontario, spent several years researching the North Shore's maritime history to create this well organized and highly readable addition to anyone's Lake Superior library. Amply illustrated with color photography of nearly every lighthouse, as well as rarely seen historical photos, the book includes chapters for 41 lighthouses located in Minnesota, on Michigan's Isle Royale and in Ontario. Discover the lighthouses you can visit, from locations in state and national parks to remote wilderness islands. Learn about the storms and shipwrecks that led to their construction, the lonely lives of the light keepers and the role the lighthouses play in present-day maritime navigation. Included are stories of famed lights such as Minnesota's Split Rock Lighthouse, Isle Royale's Rock of Ages and Ontario's former "Lighthouse of Doom." Lighthouse lovers will find Lighthouses of Lake Superior's North Shore to be a treasure trove of photos and information, while tales told by Andra-Warner will captivate anyone who loves the big lake.

Ingrid Pollard - Carbon Slowly Turning (Paperback): Fay Blanchard, Anthony Spira Ingrid Pollard - Carbon Slowly Turning (Paperback)
Fay Blanchard, Anthony Spira; Contributions by Gilane Tawadros, Anna Arabindan Kesson, Paul Gilroy, …
R773 Discovery Miles 7 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Published to accompany an exhibition at MK Gallery, this is the first major survey of the work of contemporary British artist and photographer Ingrid Pollard, nominated for the Turner Prize 2022. This publication provides the first overview of works by British artist and photographer Ingrid Pollard. Pollard is renowned for using portrait and landscape photography to question our relationship with the natural world and to interrogate social constructs such as Britishness, race, sexuality and identity. Working across a variety of techniques from photography, printmaking, drawing and installation to artists' books, video and audio, Pollard combines meticulous research and experimental processes to make art that is at once deeply personal and socially resonant. 'Ingrid Pollard's practice has long been focused on the human body, astro-physics and geology, and in particular geology in the formation of the stars and planets. The title of this publication - Carbon Slowly Turning - invites us to reflect on geological time in relation to human time. On the one hand, the millennia in which carbon, rock and other natural materials are made, and on the other, the brevity of human existence by comparison and the affecting nature of geology on the human form. A number of Pollard's works reflect on the cyclical nature of history and human experience, where everything is subject to change, sometimes over hundreds or thousands of years, at other times in the blink of an eye.' - Gilane Tawadros, Curator, writer and CEO, DACS 'Ingrid Pollard's work slows down our looking to create space to consider alternative formations of history and landscape. Across four decades she has re-scripted Britishness, looking back in order that we might move forward differently. This is a profound and timely exploration of this vital British artist.' - Maria Balshaw, Director, Tate This book accompanies an exhibition at MK Gallery and Turner Contemporary, curated by Gilane Tawadros, with the artist, and supported by the Freelands Award 2020. Edited by Fay Blanchard and Anthony Spira. Essays by Anna Arabindan-Kesson, Cheryl Finley, Paul Gilroy, Mason Leaver-Yap and Gilane Tawadros.

Polaroids occupy a special place in the hearts of many photo enthusiasts who remember a time when "instant photography" meant one-of-a-kind prints that developed within minutes of clicking the shutter. What was once a crucial tool for photographers to test their shots before shooting on film has now become obsolete in the face of digital photography. Luckily for us, legendary photographer Helmut Newton saved his test Polaroids, allowing a privileged and rare chance to see the tests from a selection of his greatest shoots over a period of decades, including many from the TASCHEN titles SUMO, A Gun for Hire, and Work. Selected by his widow, June Newton, from over 300 photos featured at the 2011 exhibition "Helmut Newton Polaroids" at the Museum fur Fotografie in Berlin, this collection captures the magic of Helmut Newton photo shoots as only Polaroids can.

The Spirit Of District Six (Paperback): Cloete Breytenbach The Spirit Of District Six (Paperback)
Cloete Breytenbach
R253 Discovery Miles 2 530 Ships in 4 - 8 working days

2016 was 50 years on from when District Six was declared a whites only area and this publication commemorates this event in our history. This revised edition (in a smaller format aimed at the tourist market) of this beautiful book shows poignant images from Breytenbach’s collection of District Six during the 1970s before the area was dramatically demolished by the apartheid government. It is an historical record about the inhabitants and their surroundings of that time and was compiled over a period of five years.

The Cape Town area known as District Six (so called for its geographic position on the municipal map of the city) developed into a dense residential area close to the centre of Cape Town during the second part of the nineteenth century. Home to a diverse community with a wide range of historical origins, neglect on the part of landlords and local authorities led to the area becoming rundown. The government repeatedly directed requests to the city council and the landlords – most of whom were white and not residing in the area – to upgrade what was fast becoming a slum on the doorstep of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. On 11 February 1966, the government declared District Six a white area under the Group Areas Act, and the wholesale removal of the inhabitants was started – mainly to areas away from the city.

This process took fifteen years and some 60 000 people were removed.

R527 Discovery Miles 5 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The real soccer fields of South Africa is a coffee-table book of photographs of soccer fields around South Africa. A selection of articles and special features focus on the meaning of these spaces and the game of soccer to South Africans. While the title showcases many excellent photographs by Christiaan Vorster himself, it is a compilation of images from a diverse range of sources: Kick Off Magazine, The DreamFields Project, the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, the Extra-Mural Education Project, Scott Smith, and Colwyn Thomas, to name a few. More than celebrate the foundation of soccer in South Africa, the title will contribute to South African soccer pride by donating 10% sales to The Dreamfields Project, and facilitate exhibition of the work from EMEP.

Temples of Deccan India - Hindu and Jain, 7th to 13th Centuries (Hardcover): George Michell Temples of Deccan India - Hindu and Jain, 7th to 13th Centuries (Hardcover)
George Michell
R1,415 Discovery Miles 14 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This beautifully illustrated book showcases the Hindu and Jain temples of Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka built prior to the invasion of peninsular India by the Delhi sultans at the end of the 13th century. Unlike temples in many other parts of India, those of the Deccan are well preserved, with their wealth of figural and decorative carvings miraculously intact. They demonstrate the development of Indian sacred architecture and art over a span of more than 600 years. Focusing on some 50 historical sites, the Temples of Deccan India begins with artificially excavated "cave" shrines dedicated to various Hindu deities, before proceeding on to examine free-standing Hindu and Jain monuments sponsored by successive rulers of the Deccan. Attention is paid to the beautiful sculptures found on temple basements, walls, brackets and ceilings. Carved in crisp relief, and sometimes even in three dimensions, these carvings are among the greatest glories of Indian stone art. Among the featured highlights are the cave temple on the island of Elephanta, with its stupendous representation of three-headed Sadashiva; the colossal, monolithic Kailasa temple at Ellora, a technical feat unsurpassed in the entire history of Indian architecture; the magnificent columned pavilion at Hanamkonda, now currently being reconstructed; and the temple at Belur, with its exquisitely carved female figural brackets. Specially commissioned plans of temple layouts accompany 300+ photographs. and clarify the succession of dynasties that governed the Deccan during the centuries covered here. Maps locate the temple sites, while passages of text illuminate the succession of dynasties that governed the Deccan from the 7th to 13th centuries. Educational, accessible and beautifully illustrated, this book will be of interest to anyone fascinated by Indian architecture.

This book provides a unique view of the development of military and commercial aviation in Japan from the pioneering years before World War I to the end of World War II. There are comparatively few books in English that illustrate aviation in Japan in the years before World War II. This is the first book to make extensive use of Japanese aviation postcards to show how aviation in Japan grew from a dependence on foreign aircraft designs and engineers in the early years to an independent industry that produced world-class airplanes. The book uses more than 250 postcards to trace the history of Imperial Japanese Army and Navy aviation, and commercial aviation, during this thirty-five year period. Each of the book's four chapters begins with a narrative survey of key developments during the period covered. The postcards, some in color and some in black and white, show both military and commercial airplanes, many famous and some less so. Of particular interest to those interested in Japanese military aviation in World War II will be a number of postcards of wartime propaganda art.

"An illustrated ode to their home, it showcases the beauty and vulnerability of Ukraine beyond the daily horrors and photographs of war." - Image (Ireland) "The book is an illustrated love letter to their homeland, created in the darkest of times..." - Amateur Photography "Facing the most adverse circumstances, they [photographer Yevhen Samuchenko and writer Lucia Bondar] unite to reveal a vision of Ukraine few people know..." - Food & Travel On 24 February 2022, the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops began. Since then, Russia's war of aggression has continued with increasing ferocity and destruction. Millions of Ukrainians have fled to neighbouring European countries. Ukraine is now a country caught between two stools: on the one hand, it is striving for rapprochement with NATO and the EU; on the other hand, good relations with Russia have also always been of fundamental importance to the country. This is a picture book about a landscape and its country, which is going through dark times and is currently moving the whole world. Here we take a look at the beauty and the integrity of Ukraine. The Ukrainian landscape is characterised by steppes, plateaus, lowlands and mountains. The Lemurian Lake in the south of Ukraine impresses with its pink colour, as it has a higher salt content than the Dead Sea. The mountain ranges of the Carpathians in the west of Ukraine captivate with their wonderful wild beauty. The Ukrainian steppe is part of the great Eurasian steppe, which runs through several countries of Eastern Europe and used to be the home of the Cossacks. The country is also criss-crossed by numerous river courses, with the Dnieper, Donets and Dniester rivers, which flow into the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, being among the most significant. Unparalleled scale, out-of-this-world colours and unique landscape shots from above make this book a tribute to the beauty of the Ukrainian landscape. Text in English, German and Ukrainian.

Abandoned Churches - Unclaimed Places of Worship (Hardcover): Francis Meslet Abandoned Churches - Unclaimed Places of Worship (Hardcover)
Francis Meslet
R748 Discovery Miles 7 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Between 2012 and 2019 Francis Meslet photographed several hundred places of worship across Europe. Over time, these places have became enveloped in silence, the only thing heard there now an occasional gust of wind whistling though broken stained glass, or the rhythmic drip of water leaking through the dilapidated roof above a nave. Nevertheless, these muted places still draw an occasional visitor. Once upon a time, prayers could be heard recited in Latin in a German church; and in a French Catholic college, the voices of children once resounded to the sound of the bells. But who can imagine what sounds might be concealed behind the walls of a crypt in the heart of the Italian mountains, or within a tomb in a former convent in Portugal? In his spare time Francis travels the world in search of places that have fallen into disuse -- religious buildings where time has stood still since their doors were closed for the last time. He returns with incredible photographs, each a time capsule, a record of a parallel universe. They prompt us to let our imaginations wander and ask ourselves questions. With the greatest respect for the faithful who regularly visited them long ago, he offers us an opportunity to immerse ourselves in places that have been abandoned by faith, to seek a divine light.

Extinct & Endangered - Insects in Peril (Hardcover): Levon Biss Extinct & Endangered - Insects in Peril (Hardcover)
Levon Biss; American Museum of Natural History
R841 Discovery Miles 8 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Extraordinary images by master macro photographer Levon Biss capture a vanishing world of insects from the collections of the American Museum of Natural History in New YorkInsects are at once our most familiar fellow animals and the most mysterious. They appear to be indestructible, but globally, insect species are quietly disappearing in the sixth mass extinction that life on Earth is undergoing today. This joint project of photographer Levon Biss and the American Museum of Natural History contains indelible images of 40 extinct or endangered species in the museum's collection, selected from its vast holdings by a team of scientists. They range from imperiled old friends like the monarch butterfly and the nine-spotted ladybug to the remote Lord Howe Island stick insect of Australia, thought to be extinct for most of the 20th century until a tiny population was discovered and bred in captivity in 2001. All were sent to Biss's studio, where he created commanding portraits that can be enlarged 30 times lifesize to reveal vivid full-page details of form and color-a world invisible to our naked eyes. The result is a book that insists on the momentous significance of these small, mostly unknown creatures.

What can be more inspiring and resilient than listening to a five-year-old girl who spent her life until then struggling with severe multiple food allergies, saying that when she couldn't eat strawberries, she pretended that watermelons were strawberries? Moments like this kept Sandra Bacchi strong and positive while facing the shadows that came to the surface when she became a mother. Watermelons Are Not Strawberries is a photographic memoir about the ups and downs of parenting and the surprising lessons about acceptance and healing we can learn from our children. The visual experience of moving from chaos to clarity is both vulnerable and relatable, giving the viewer a window into what it means to find peace and a little bit of hope.

"Ballet inspires me. Human beings have the capacity to express themselves through many art forms, but when it comes to dance - and especially classical modern ballet - I am always amazed by that unbelievably elevated form of expression. It's so precise and so incredibly skilled; I admire that enormously." - Photographer and filmmaker Erwin Olaf "The fact that the photographer is looking through the camera lens means they have a different perspective from looking directly at the figure. That is voyeuristic. The camera can do something that the audience member can't: zooming in for a close-up." - Choreographer Hans van Manen The grand master of Dutch dance, Hans van Manen, celebrates his 90th birthday this year. That has given rise to international celebrations by leading ballet companies with the Hans van Manen festival from 8 to 29 June 2022, the exclusive publication Dance in Close-Up and the exhibition of the same name in Galerie Ron Mandos in Amsterdam from 19 June to 17 July 2022. From the 1970s to the 1990s, Hans van Manen was not only one of the world's leading choreographers, but also an internationally acclaimed photographer. It was during this period that the then very young photographer Erwin Olaf met the famed artist, who immediately took him under his wing and introduced him to the world of the visual arts and studio photography. This book celebrates their 40 years of friendship, with a photo series in which Van Manen directs moments from his choreographic career, recorded with the utmost precision by Erwin Olaf. With text contributions from the authors Nina Siegal and Michael James Gardner.

Ambitious in scope, democratic in nature, Magnum Streetwise is an unmissable tour through the photographs and practices that have helped define what street photography is and can be. Magnum photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson pioneered 'modern' concepts of street photography before the term was even coined. But their influence is far from historic. A rich seam of street photography runs through the heart of Magnum to this day, both in the work of recognized masters of street photography - such as Erwitt, Parr, Gilden and Kalvar - and of those who might not even consider themselves street photographers; a continued influence that has not gone unnoticed among the current generation of budding street photographers and fans. Magnum Streetwise is a true visual feast, interleaving insightful texts and anecdotes within an intuitive blend of photographer- and theme-based portfolios, exploring not only the work of outstanding photographers, but how common subject matter (places of leisure, marketplaces, travel) and locations (Paris, New York, Tokyo) have been addressed, conceptually and practically, across the agency and through the ages. Magnum Streetwise is an essential addition to the bibliography of street photography, showcasing hidden gems alongside many of the genre's most famous images.

"Into the Sunset" examines how photography has pictured, established and transformed the idea of the American West, from 1850 to the present. The development of photography coincided with the exploration and settlement of the West, and this simultaneous growth resulted in a complex relationship that has shaped the perception of that region's physical and social landscape to this day. Published to accompany a major exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, "Into the Sunset" charts changing myths and cultural attitudes about the West through photographs dating from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries. An expansive and dynamic survey, it brings together photographers as diverse as Carleton E. Watkins and Stephen Shore, Darius Kinsey and Dorothea Lange, Robert Frank and Cindy Sherman, an unknown daguerreotypist and Richard Prince. More than 120 works are organized thematically to highlight the artists' differing views of the West's land and people.

From majestic glaciers to vast frozen plains as far as the eye can see, ice is just as important to the world's ecosystems as water, air, and trees. And yet its presence and vital role on Earth is increasingly threatened by the effects of global warming and population growth-the inspiration behind French photographer Laurent Baheux's latest endeavor, Ice is Black. Through breathtaking black-and-white images, Baheux captures the world's most beautiful icy landscapes and the fascinating animals that inhabit them. We get close to creatures and landscapes that seem to be taken out of time. Taken in such far-flung lands as Norway, Iceland, and Canada, Baheux's images present polar bears and their cubs, foxes frolicking in snow, and seals navigating icy waters. While the photographs convey evocative beauty, they also act as a call to action to protect these magnificent icy lands and the creatures that rely on them.
