Cumberland Island is the largest and most beloved of the Georgia
barrier islands. Although it can be reached only by boat, more than
forty thousand people make the trip each year to enjoy the island's
natural splendor and solitude. As on most barrier islands, human
activity has long been a shaping force on Cumberland. It is among
the few islands, however, that we have let return to a relatively
natural state. With its expansive oceanfront beaches, dunes,
interior maritime forests, freshwater ponds, tidal creeks, and salt
marshes, Cumberland Island is all the more special for its restored
natural environment. In The Seasons of Cumberland Island,
naturalist and photographer Fred Whitehead captures the unique
allure of the island's flora and fauna in 118 stunning full-color
photographs. Moving through seasons punctuated by the comings and
goings of such animals as the migratory birds that pass through in
autumn and spring and the loggerhead turtles that nest here in
summer, the photographs reveal the subtle but important effect of
cyclical change on the island's ecosystems. The lush color images,
which are often paired with detailed captions, include spectacular
views of muscadine vines and Virginia creeper in autumn, a prowling
bobcat in winter, a nest of pileated woodpeckers in the spring, and
a green tree frog announcing an impending summer rain shower.
Featuring an introduction on the importance of the complex
ecosystems of barrier islands like Cumberland, the book informs as
it enchants. Here is a stunning tribute to Cumberland's sublime
treasures that also serves as a thoughtful reminder to respect and
protect the wildness of our barrier islands.
The photographic journey begins in the streets of Jo'burg in the
late 1970's and ends in the rural and desert landscapes of the
millennium. It is not a political A to Z or a documentary of our
political past, but an observation of the lives of ordinary people
and their daily survival choices as they have struggled and
overcome the limiting circumstances of their lives - or simply
reflected the tenor of their times. Most of the images are
unpublished because they were taken in a time when there was no
space for the ordinary. They 'fell through the cracks' because they
were often considered too 'off beat' to make it. These photographs
capture glimpses of life between the cracks before, after and while
the political wheel was turning. They are about how people try to
survive in so many different and extraordinary ways and the
survival choices they make under often extreme conditions of
hardship how they reflected themselves and how I absorbed their
reflections, how they danced with reality, made light in the dark
spaces, embraced each other at great risk.
Lee Miller, 1927 - New York: A classically beautiful young woman,
she is discovered by Conde Nast, hits the cover of Vogue and is
immortalized by Steichen, Hoyningen-Huene, Horst and other famous
photographers. Lee Miller, 1929 - Paris: Protege and lover of Man
Ray, she invents with him the solarization technique of
photography, develops into a brilliant Surrealist photographer, and
plays the statue in Cocteau's film Blood of a Poet. Lee Miller,
1939-45 - Europe: Living at times with her future husband, the
painter Roland Penrose, she becomes a US war correspondent and
covers the siege of St Malo and the liberation of Paris. Her
photographs of Dachau concentration camp shock the world. These are
but three of the many lives of Lee Miller, intimately recorded here
by her son, Antony Penrose. Featuring a selection of her finest
work, including portraits of her friends Picasso, Ernst and Miro,
Penrose's tribute to his mother brings to life a uniquely talented
woman and the turbulent times in which she lived. With 116

To be a skateboarder today is a much different experience than it
was for much of the 1990s. The photographs, quotes, and anecdotal
text in '93 til captures a time in skateboarding when making a
liveable income as a professional skater was a luxury and public
understanding of skateboarding was at an all-time low. It was a
time when skateboarding was searching for an identity, a time
before Instagram and big corporate influences. Street skating was
coming of age, testing its limitations and aligning itself with a
new and innovative style of hip-hop culture that was emerging.
Looking back, many skaters today feel as though the '90s were the
golden years of skateboarding. '93 til is a captivating portal into
a decade and a culture that is remembered with warmth and
nostalgia. Much of the photography that Pete has unearthed for '93
til was buried in boxes for close to two decades and has never been
seen or published before. The 250-page book also contains several
timeless images from his years shooting for SLAP and Transworld
Skateboarding Magazine that will be familiar to the initiated. In
addition to his stunning action shots are plenty of portraits and
unguarded, candid moments that span from the late '80s up through
2004. The book reveals a raw, unapologetic perspective of a world
that no longer exists. Also included in the book alongside Pete's
imagery are quotes and anecdotes from legends like Tony Hawk, Arto
Saari, Jamie Thomas, Guy Mariano, Nyjah Huston, Geoff Rowley,
Stevie Williams and others.

Elinor De Wire has been writing about lighthouses and their keepers
since 1972. During that time she found that hundreds of lighthouse
animals wandered into her research notes and photo collection. This
book is the story of all these cold-nosed, whiskered, wooly,
hoofed, horned, slithery, buzzing, feathered, and finned keepers of
the lights. Where else would a dog learn to ring a fogbell; a cat
go swimming and catch a fish for its supper; or a parrot cuss the
storm winds rattling its cage? Who other than a lightkeeper would
swim a cow home, tame a baby seal, adopt an orphan alligator, send
messages via carrier pigeons, or imagine mermaids coming to visit?
The Lightkeepers' Menagerie gathers together animal stories from
lighthouses all around the world, tales of happiness and sadness,
courage and cowardice, tragedy and comedy, even absurdity.
Sometimes, fur, feathers, and fins tell the best tales.
