Documentary students and fans revel in stories about filmmakers conquering extraordinary challenges trying to bring their work to the screen. This book brings vividly to life the sometimes humorous, sometimes excruciating - and always inspiring - stories behind the making of some of the greatest documentaries of our time. Almost all of the filmmakers and films profiled are Oscar-shortlisted, Oscar-nominated or Oscar-winning. "Documentary Case Studies" walks readers through the fixes and mis-steps that today's documentary leaders worked through at all stages to create their masterworks - from development, fundraising and pre-production, through production and then post. There are plenty of 'how to' documentary filmmaking books in circulation, but this book will instead deploy a personal, intimate and candid approach to unlocking the secrets of the craft and the business, by meeting filmmakers who tackle production challenges in the most resourceful and unconventional ways. Filmmakers work across styles - from abject and gritty ("Taxi To The Dark Side") to more playful and witty ("Spellbound").
Argues that popular films perform a religious function in our culture The first edition of Film as Religion was one of the first texts to develop a framework for the analysis of the religious function of films for audiences. Like more formal religious institutions, films can provide us with ways to view the world and the values to confront it. Lyden argues that the cultural influence of films is analogous to that of religions, so that films can be understood as representing a "religious" worldview in their own right. Thoroughly updating his examples, Lyden examines a range of film genres and individual films, from The Godfather to The Hunger Games to Frozen, to show how film can function religiously.
The sending of food aid can be questioned, because food aid often
does not get to the areas of greatest need, it is frequently stolen
en route by the military, and organizations are too slow to respond
to need.
A study of the rape-revenge film, in which Jacinda Read suggests that the rape-revenge cycle can be read as one of the primary ways in which Hollywood has attempted to make sense of feminism and the changing shape of heterosexual femininity in the post-1970 period. Arguing that rape-revenge is better understood not as a genre, but as a narrative structure, the author analyzes the ways in which various deployments of this structure rework the "mass cultural fictions of femininity" inscribed in the genres over which they have been mapped. From the "frontier femmes" of rape-revenge westerns such as "Hannie Caulder", through the "erotic avengers" of neo-noirs such as "Batman Returns", to the "maternal avengers" of rape-revenge melodrama such as "An Eye for an Eye", this work explores the popular understandings of feminism that circulate around these generic manifestations of the female avenger. Applying ideas from feminist cultural studies to the analysis of film, and combining detailed textual analysis with contextual analysis, the book challenges many of the received orthodoxies of feminist theory. -- .
Popular Music on Screen examines the relationship between popular music and the screen, from the origins of Hollywood musical to contemporary developments in music television and video. Through detailed examination of films, television programmes and popular music, together with analysis of the economic, technological and cultural determinants which impact upon their production and consumption, the book argues that popular music has been incresingly influenced by its visual economy. Though engaging with the debates which surround postmodernism, the book suggests that what most characterizes the relationship between popular music and the screen media is a strong sense of continuity, expressed through institutional structures, representational strategies and the ideology of entertainment.

The book will be a `must' for every Andrews fan, and it is an excellent reference source for its subject. Videomania For fans of Julie Andrews as well as students of the performing arts, Spindle's reference chronicles the professional career of one of the world's most loved performers. No other book provides such a wealth of detail on the career achievements of Julie Andrews or delineates all her professional activities so thoroughly. A complete, all-in-one resource, the volume presents a comprehensive and accurate profile of the people, projects, artistic highs and lows, and general influences that propelled the actress into the public eye beginning in the late 1950s. Starting with Andrews' first film, Mary Poppins, Spindle examines each of her 16 films including such classics as Sound of Music, Hawaii, Victor/Victoria, and ending with her latest film, Duet for One. He provides a detailed commentary on factors influencing her short reign as a box office superstar in the mid-1960s, for Andrews is an anomaly in that she has retained her fame and admired celebrity status long after ceasing to be a Hollywood superstar. Besides film work, all other aspects of Andrews' career (theatre, television, personal appearances, concerts, recordings, and even her fiction for children) are considered. An episode-by-episode summary in the Television Appearances chapter is the only published survey of the entire 1972-1973 ABC-TV variety series, The Julie Andrews Hour. In his preface, Spindle offers a lively discussion of the eclectic and highly individual career of a perennial trooper and star whose career he likens to a roller coaster. This is followed by a biography and chronology which summarizes events and landmarks in Andrews' life. The next four chapters scrutinize major professional achievements in-depth, including Filmography, Stage and Television Appearances, and Discography. All entries in the four sections correspond to a particular career achievement, and consecutive numbering facilitates both subject index use and cross referencing within chapters. Over 150 reference sources, including books, and magazine and news articles are listed in the comprehensive bibliography. The three appendices review awards and nominations, identify roles considered but not played, and describe the two children's books written by the actress. A readable and informative reference work for students and scholars of the performing arts and popular culture, as well as for fans of movie musicals, this volume should also find a place on the shelves of most libraries.
Teaching and learning through Hollywood, or commercial, film productions is anything but a new approach and has been something of a mainstay in the classroom for nearly a century. Purposeful and effective instruction through film, however, is not problem-free and there are many challenges that accompany classroom applications of Hollywood motion pictures. In response to the problems and possibilities associated with teaching through film, we have collaboratively developed a collection ofpractical, classroom-ready lesson ideas that might bridge gaps between theory and practice and assist teachers endeavoring to make effective use of film in their classrooms. We believe that film can serve as a powerful tool in the social studies classroom and, where appropriately utilized, foster critical thinking and civic mindedness. The College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) framework, represents a renewed and formalized emphasis on the perennial social studies goals of deep thinking, reading and writing. We believe that as teachers endeavor to digest and implement the platform in schools and classrooms across the country, the desire for access to structured strategies that lead to more active and rigorous investigation in the social studies classroom will grow increasingly acute. Our hope is that this edited book might play a small role in the larger project of supporting practitioners, specifically K-16 teachers of United States history, by offering a collection of classroom-ready tools based on the Hollywood or History? strategy and designed to foster historical inquiry through the careful use of historically themed motion pictures. The book consists of K-5 and 6-12 lesson plans addressing each the following historical eras (Adapted from: UCLA, National Center for History in Schools).

While Israel has seemingly been a minor presence in Hollywood cinema, Reimagining the Promised Land argues that there is a long history of Hollywood deploying images of Israel as a means of articulating an idealized notion of American national identity. This argument is developed through readings of The Ten Commandments (Cecil B. DeMille, 1956), Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (William Wyler, 1959), Exodus (Otto Preminger, 1960), Cast a Giant Shadow (Melville Shavelson, 1966), Black Sunday (John Frankenheimer, 1977), The Delta Force (Menahem Golan, 1986), and Munich (Steven Spielberg, 2005). The mobilization of Israel that pervades this eclectic group of films effectively demonstrates one of the more surreptitious ways in which Hollywood has historically constructed and circulated dominant notions of American national identity. Moreover, in examining the most notable Hollywood representations of the Jewish state, the book offers an informed historical overview of the cultural forces that have contributed to popular understandings within the United States of the state of Israel, Israel's Arab neighbours, and also the Arab-Israeli conflict.
