Queering and Querying the Paradise of Paradox - LGBT Language, New Media, and Visual Cultures in Modern-Day Brazil (Hardcover):... Queering and Querying the Paradise of Paradox - LGBT Language, New Media, and Visual Cultures in Modern-Day Brazil (Hardcover)
Steven F. Butterman
R3,678 Discovery Miles 36 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides readers with a study of the characteristics that make life unique for sexual minorities in Brazil while also viewing Brazil in relation to global LGBT sociopolitical movements. It critically assesses the complex relationship(s) between the visual arts and political activism, carefully analyzing artistic, cinematic, and photographic representations of LGBTQ identities. Brazil provides a useful case to example, with the cultivation of ambiguity in contemporary (re)constructions of queer life. In this book, the author conducts the first comprehensive discourse analysis of the dynamics and features of the largest LGBT Pride Parade in the world. This problematizes and analyzes the relationship between burgeoning critical socio-political movements and institutions and the language and new media discourses used to configure and conceptualize them. The aim of this project is to create a theoretical scholarly framework promoting linkages between political activism and academic scholarship and by using discourse analysis, the intricacies of terminology Brazilian sexual minorities adopt and adapt, illustrating the development of LGBTQ identities through performative language use.

A Practical Guide to Searching LGBTQIA Historical Records (Hardcover): Norena Shopland A Practical Guide to Searching LGBTQIA Historical Records (Hardcover)
Norena Shopland
R1,635 Discovery Miles 16 350 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book provides a number of effective tools to aid in the recovery of LGBTQIA historic material by providing extensive glossary and non-glossary written descriptions, and how to use those terms and phrases in searching effectively online and offline. Researching hidden and forbidden people from the past can be extremely difficult. Terminology used to write about LGBT+ people shifts over time, legal terminology enforces certain set terms which some writers use but others reject to avoid informing or disgusting a reading public. Often written descriptions contain no set terminology at all. How then can LGBT+ people be found in historic records? This book provides practical tools for a researcher wanting to uncover material from online or hard copy sources, including: keyword/s covering various sexual orientations and gender diversity, along with how and when to use them; tips for effective searching in online newspaper archives; how to use genealogy, auction and social media sites to uncover information; searching in online and physical libraries; advice on researching in physical archives and the types of collections which can yield results; and researching in museums collecting and displaying LGBT+ content. Making use of a straightforward and jargon free style, this is a short and accessible guide to doing historical research on Gay, Lesbian, Trans, Queer and non-normative research subjects. This is a useful resource for students and scholars alike in Archive Studies History, Gender and Sexuality Studies.

After Difference - Queer Activism in Italy and Anthropological Theory (Paperback): Paolo Heywood After Difference - Queer Activism in Italy and Anthropological Theory (Paperback)
Paolo Heywood
R727 Discovery Miles 7 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Queer activism and anthropology are both fundamentally concerned with the concept of difference. Yet they are so in fundamentally different ways. The Italian queer activists in this book value difference as something that must be produced, in opposition to the identity politics they find around them. Conversely, anthropologists find difference in the world around them, and seek to produce an identity between anthropological theory and the ethnographic material it elucidates. This book describes problems faced by an activist "politics of difference," and issues concerning the identity of anthropological reflection itself-connecting two conceptions of difference whilst simultaneously holding them apart.

Gary Schmidt, Merrill Cole
R913 Discovery Miles 9 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Knowing that queer voices have been making themselves heard in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria decades before Stonewall, editors Gary Schmidt and Merrill Cole curated thrilling snapshots of prose fiction from more than twenty contemporary writers whose work defies stereotypes, disciplines, and expectations. These authors produce fiction for adults and young people that celebrates the multiplicity of the present, casts a queer eye on the past, and interrogates LGBTQ futures. These outstanding texts exemplify the glittering variety of styles, themes, settings, and subjects addressed by openly queer authors who write in German today. They explore identity, sexuality, history, fantasy, loss, and discovery. Their authors, narrators, and characters explore gender nonconformity and living queer everywhere from city centers to rural communities. They are gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, and nonbinary. They are exiles, immigrants, and travelers through time and space. Witty, titillating, and a delight to read, Quertext opens up new worlds of experience for readers interested in queer life beyond the Anglophone world. Planning and LGBTQ Communities - The Need for Inclusive Queer Spaces (Paperback): Petra L. Doan Planning and LGBTQ Communities - The Need for Inclusive Queer Spaces (Paperback)
Petra L. Doan
R1,778 Discovery Miles 17 780 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Although the last decade has seen steady progress towards wider acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals, LGBTQ residential and commercial areas have come under increasing pressure from gentrification and redevelopment initiatives. As a result many of these neighborhoods are losing their special character as safe havens for sexual and gender minorities. Urban planners and municipal officials have sometimes ignored the transformation of these neighborhoods and at other times been complicit in these changes. Planning and LGBTQ Communities brings together experienced planners, administrators, and researchers in the fields of planning and geography to reflect on the evolution of urban neighborhoods in which LGBTQ populations live, work, and play. The authors examine a variety of LGBTQ residential and commercial areas to highlight policy and planning links to the development of these neighborhoods. Each chapter explores a particular urban context and asks how the field of planning has enabled, facilitated, and/or neglected the specialized and diverse needs of the LGBTQ population. A central theme of this book is that urban planners need to think "beyond queer space" because LGBTQ populations are more diverse and dispersed than the white gay male populations that created many of the most visible gayborhoods. The authors provide practical guidance for cities and citizens seeking to strengthen neighborhoods that have an explicit LGBTQ focus as well as other areas that are LGBTQ-friendly. They also encourage broader awareness of the needs of this marginalized population and the need to establish more formal linkages between municipal government and a range of LGBTQ groups. Planning and LGBTQ Communities also adds useful material for graduate level courses in planning theory, urban and regional theory, planning for multicultural cities, urban geography, and geographies of gender and sexuality.

The Gayborhood - From Sexual Liberation to Cosmopolitan Spectacle (Hardcover): Christopher T. Conner, Daniel Okamura The Gayborhood - From Sexual Liberation to Cosmopolitan Spectacle (Hardcover)
Christopher T. Conner, Daniel Okamura; Contributions by Christopher T. Conner, Adriana Brodyn, Jeffrey Escoffier, …
R3,026 Discovery Miles 30 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Gayborhood: From Sexual Liberation to Cosmopolitan Spectacle explores the lived experiences of LGBT+ persons in an era of heightened visibility. Gay urban enclaves, known colloquially as gayborhoods, illustrate the evolution of LGBT+ political capacity building. Since their emergence after World War II, gayborhoods have homogenized at the expense of women, transgender, and nonwhite persons due to neoliberal policies promoted by urban planners. Thus, their popularization and economic vitality correlate with a loss of collective identity and space for some inhabitants. While gayborhoods were once diverse and inclusive spaces that rejected normative institutions of marriage and assimilation into dominant society, the stakeholders of these areas have now unashamedly aligned themselves with conformity and profitability to legitimize their existence. The contributors within The Gayborhood invite readers to reflect on the future of LGBT+ politics and look beyond the commercialized rainbow spectacle of gayborhoods to the communities and aspirations within.

Rethinking Chicana/o and Latina/o Popular Culture (Hardcover): D. Perez Rethinking Chicana/o and Latina/o Popular Culture (Hardcover)
D. Perez
R1,402 Discovery Miles 14 020 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this book, Daniel Enrique Perez examines the various ways queer identities are represented in Chicana/o and Latina/o cultural texts. Through a gender, ethnicity, and sexuality lens, he demonstrates that queer Chicana/o and Latina/o identities are much more prevalent in cultural production than most people think. He argues that the representation of queer identities goes well beyond gay Chicana/o and Latina/o stereotypes: "maricones," "jotos," and "marimachas." Macho men, the Latin lover, "Pocho," "Real Women Have Curves," "Selena," and several other characters and texts""are also queer. By claiming such a variety of characters and texts as queer, he erases that infamous forward slash that tends to be drawn between the terms "straight" and "gay" while expanding the breadth of queer representation in cultural production.

Crossing Borders and Queering Citizenship - Civic Reading Practice in Contemporary American and Canadian Writing (Paperback):... Crossing Borders and Queering Citizenship - Civic Reading Practice in Contemporary American and Canadian Writing (Paperback)
Zalfa Feghali
R757 Discovery Miles 7 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Can reading make us better citizens? In Crossing borders and queering citizenship, Feghali crafts a sophisticated theoretical framework to theorise how the act of reading can contribute to the queering of contemporary citizenship in North America. Providing sensitive and convincing readings of work by both popular and niche authors, including Gloria Anzaldua, Dorothy Allison, Gregory Scofield, Guillermo Gomez-Pena, Erin Moure, Junot Diaz, and Yann Martel, this book is the first to not only read these authors together, but also to discuss how each powerfully resists the exclusionary work of state-sanctioned citizenship in the U.S. and Canada. This book convincingly draws connections between queer theory, citizenship studies, and border studies and sheds light on how these connections can reframe our understanding of American Studies. -- .

Lendetaal - Homoerotiek in Die Kunste En in Die Letterkunde (Afrikaans, Paperback): Hennie Aucamp Lendetaal - Homoerotiek in Die Kunste En in Die Letterkunde (Afrikaans, Paperback)
Hennie Aucamp
R107 Discovery Miles 1 070 Ships in 6 - 10 working days

Respectably Queer - Diversity Culture in LGBT Activist Organizations (Hardcover): Jane Ward Respectably Queer - Diversity Culture in LGBT Activist Organizations (Hardcover)
Jane Ward
R2,671 Discovery Miles 26 710 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

For three years the author did participant-observation at three nationally prominent queer organizations in Los Angeles-Christopher Street West, which produces L.A.'s queer pride festival; the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, a 37-year-old multi-site organization; and Bienestar, an HIV services organization for gay Latinos. Ward documents the evolution of these organizations, including class and race conflicts within them, but she especially focuses on the misuses of diversity culture.

"Respectably Queer" reveals how neoliberal ideas about difference are becoming embedded in the daily life of a progressive movement and producing frequent conflicts over the meaning of "diversity." The author shows how queer activists are learning from the corporate model to leverage their differences to compete with other non-profit groups, enhance their public reputation or moral standing, and establish their diversity-related expertise. Ward argues that this instrumentalization of diversity has increased the demand for predictable and easily measurable forms of difference, a trend at odds with queer resistance.

Ward traces the standoff between the respectable world of "diversity awareness" and the often vulgar, sexualized, and historically unprofessional world of queer pride festivals. She spotlights dissenting voices in a queer organization where diversity has become synonymous with tedious and superficial workplace training. And she shows how activists fight back when prevailing diversity discourses-the ones that "diverse" people are compelled to use in order to receive funding-simply don't fit.

Homosexuality and Italian Cinema - From the Fall of Fascism to the Years of Lead (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Mauro Giori Homosexuality and Italian Cinema - From the Fall of Fascism to the Years of Lead (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Mauro Giori
R2,683 Discovery Miles 26 830 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is the first to establish the relevance of same-sex desires, pleasures and anxieties in the cinema of post-war Italy. It explores cinematic representations of homosexuality and their significance in a wider cultural struggle in Italy involving society, cinema, and sexuality between the 1940s and 1970s. Besides tracing the evolution of representations through both art and popular films, this book also analyses connections with consumer culture, film criticism and politics. Giori uncovers how complicated negotiations between challenges to and valorization of dominant forms of knowledge of homosexuality shaped representations and argues that they were not always the outcome of hatred but also sought to convey unmentionable pleasures and complicities. Through archival research and a survey of more than 600 films, the author enriches our understanding of thirty years of Italian film and cultural history.

The Pedagogy of Queer TV (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Ava Laure Parsemain The Pedagogy of Queer TV (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Ava Laure Parsemain
R2,434 Discovery Miles 24 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines queer characters in popular American television, demonstrating how entertainment can educate audiences about LGBT identities and social issues like homophobia and transphobia. Through case studies of musical soap operas (Glee and Empire), reality shows (RuPaul's Drag Race, The Prancing Elites Project and I Am Cait) and "quality" dramas (Looking, Transparent and Sense8), it argues that entertainment elements such as music, humour, storytelling and melodrama function as pedagogical tools, inviting viewers to empathise with and understand queer characters. Each chapter focuses on a particular programme, looking at what it teaches-its representation of queerness-and how it teaches this-its pedagogy. Situating the programmes in their broader historical context, this study also shows how these televisual texts exemplify a specific moment in American television.

Full Surrogacy Now - Feminism Against Family (Paperback): Sophie Anne Lewis Full Surrogacy Now - Feminism Against Family (Paperback)
Sophie Anne Lewis
R313 Discovery Miles 3 130 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

"Rooted in historical, site-based, narrative, and political accounts, Full Surrogacy Now is the seriously radical cry for full gestational justice that I long for. This kind of gestation depends on realizing the implications of knowing that we all actually, materially, make one another, and that this labor continues to be exploited, extracted, and alienated-unequally-at every turn in Capitalism and Patriarchy. Full of brilliant, generative, and also shamelessly biting critique of both bourgeois and communist tracts, feminist and otherwise, Lewis's voice is unique and bracing. I need it; it fills my whole self with reimagined possibilities for making oddkin who are not property. Lewis set out to write an immoderate, utopian, partisan, anti-authoritarian communist defense of surrogates and surrogacy in ramifying registers of meanings and practices, and she has succeeded. Lewis asks the necessary questions, 'Can we parent politically, hopefully, nonreproductively-in a comradely way?' Can we become full surrogates for and with each other? In a book full of fierce demystifications and sharp dissections of injustice masquerading as humanitarianism, nonetheless Lewis convincingly and radically affirms: 'Everywhere about me, I can see beautiful militants hell-bent on regeneration, not self-replication.'" - Donna Haraway

Queering Family Trees - Race, Reproductive Justice, and Lesbian Motherhood (Hardcover): Sandra Patton-Imani Queering Family Trees - Race, Reproductive Justice, and Lesbian Motherhood (Hardcover)
Sandra Patton-Imani
R2,536 Discovery Miles 25 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Argues that significant barriers to family-making exist for lesbian mothers of color in the United States One might be tempted, in the afterglow of Obergefell v. Hodges, to believe that the battle has been won, that gays and lesbians fought a tough fight and finally achieved equality in the United States through access to legal marriage. But that narrative tells only one version of a very complex story about family and citizenship. Queering Family Trees explores the lived experience of queer mothers in the United States, drawing on over one hundred interviews with African American, Latina, Native American, white, and Asian American lesbian mothers living in a range of socioeconomic circumstances to show how they have navigated family-making. While the legalization of same-sex marriage and adoption in 2015 has provided avenues toward equality for some couples, structural and economic barriers have meant that others-especially queer women of color who often have fewer financial resources-have not been able to access seemingly available "choices" such as second-parent adoptions, powers of attorney, and wills. Sandra Patton-Imani here argues that the virtual exclusion of lesbians of color from public narratives about LGBTQ families is crucial to maintaining the narrative that legal marriage for same-sex couples provides access to full equality as citizens. Through the lens of reproductive justice, Patton-Imani argues that the federal legalization of same-sex marriage reinforces existing structures of inequality grounded in race, gender, sexuality, and class. Queering Family Trees explores the lives of a critically erased segment of the queer population, demonstrating that the seemingly "color blind" solutions offered by marriage equality do not rectify such inequalities.

Trans-Affirmative Parenting - Raising Kids Across the Gender Spectrum (Hardcover): Elizabeth Rahilly Trans-Affirmative Parenting - Raising Kids Across the Gender Spectrum (Hardcover)
Elizabeth Rahilly
R2,511 Discovery Miles 25 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

First-hand accounts of how parents support their transgender children There is a new generation of parents and families who are identifying, supporting, and raising transgender children. In Trans-Affirmative Parenting, Elizabeth Rahilly presents their fascinating stories, interviewing parents of children who identify across the gender spectrum, as well as the doctors, mental health practitioners, educators, and advocates who support their journeys. Rahilly provides a window into parents' experiences, exploring how they come to terms with new ideas about gender, sexuality, identity, and the body, as well as examining their complex deliberations about nonbinary possibilities and medical interventions. Ultimately, Rahilly compassionately shows how parents can best advocate for transgender awareness and move beyond traditional gendered expectations. She also shows that child-centered, child-driven parenting is as central to this new trans-affirmative paradigm as growing LGBTQ awareness. In an era that is increasingly trans-aware, Trans-Affirmative Parenting offers provocative new insights into transgender children and the parents who raise them.
