Peter B. Maggs
R4,461 Discovery Miles 44 610 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This title was first publised in 2002: The Third Part of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation was adopted by the Russian Parliament on November 26, 2001, to take effect on March 1, 2002. It has two divisions: Inheritance Law and Private International Law. This translation of the Third Part of the Code by Peter B. Maggs includes an introduction by Professor Maggs as well as all amendments to the first two parts of the Code. Some of these amendments are of a purely technical nature, but some include substantive changes. Unwrapping the European social model (Hardcover, New): Amparo Serrano Pascual, Maria Jepsen Unwrapping the European social model (Hardcover, New)
Amparo Serrano Pascual, Maria Jepsen
R2,309 Discovery Miles 23 090 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The notion of the European Social Model (ESM) has been one of the fastest growing in European political and academic discourse in recent years. It is conventionally used to describe the European experience of simultaneously promoting sustainable economic growth and social cohesion. However, the concept has suffered from a lack of clear definition. And where definitions have been found in the literature, they do not necessarily converge. This book presents the outcome of a project coordinated by the European Trade Union Institute in which experts from different countries and social scientific disciplines (sociology, political science and economics) were invited to reflect on both the meaning and political status of the concept of the ESM. In addition to analysing the ambiguities and multiple meanings attributed to the concept, the authors unpick the underlying assumptions and make use of a new approach - the ESM as political project - with which European countries can build consensus and share a common understanding. Offering a new analytical framework and with new empirical evidence, "Unwrapping the European Social Model" is essential reading for all those involved in European social policy research, education, policy and practice.

Global Dimensions of Gender and Carework (Paperback): Mary K. Zimmerman, Jacquelyn S. Litt, Christine E. Bose Global Dimensions of Gender and Carework (Paperback)
Mary K. Zimmerman, Jacquelyn S. Litt, Christine E. Bose
R730 Discovery Miles 7 300 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Why are women such prominent workers in the global marketplace? Why do so many perform jobs that involve carework? What political forces have made these women key participants in globalization? What are the consequences for the women themselves, for their families, and for societies and international relations in general? This book offers a provocative examination of globalization, examining the lives of the women at the center of these new global dynamics. Arguing that society is facing multiple crises of care, the authors develop a new framework for understanding the interplay of globalization, gender, and carework. In four original essays, they examine gender, race, and class inequality; migration, citizenship, and the politics of social control; the evolving meanings of motherhood; and new social definitions of carework and the personal transformation of careworkers. Excerpts from the classic works in the field as well as recent cutting-edge research studies support the examination of each of these growing global crises.

Graham Room, In Collaboration with, Jacob Dencik, Nick Gould, Richard Kamm, …
R850 Discovery Miles 8 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Economic and social change is accelerating under the twin impact of globalisation and the new information technologies. But how are these processes interrelated? Are they impelling us towards a common socio-economic future? What can governments do if they want to manage and steer the direction of development? This book addresses these questions with particular reference to the European Union, which has made the development of a socially cohesive, knowledge-based economy its central task for the present decade. It assesses both the challenges and the policy instruments that are being deployed, focussing in particular on the dynamics of the 'new economy'; the new organisational architectures associated with rapid innovation; the transformation of education and training; the implications for social cohesion and exclusion and the role of policy benchmarking in promoting policy learning and enhancing national performance. The European Challenge presents the most up-to-date research on the development of the knowledge-based economy and its social and policy implications. Its accessible and integrated treatment of the processes of economic, social and technological change make it an invaluable resource for those studying and researching in the fields of public and social policy, organisational and technological change and innovation. It is also highly relevant to policy-makers who need to understand and manage this change.

Dorte Martinsen, Hans Vollaard
R1,136 Discovery Miles 11 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

While the EU legitimacy crisis and the Great Recession prevail, certain European Union principles and policies have to be implemented in the member states. This volume explores the diverse processes, stages and subjects of implementation in a variety of social policies to identify different institutional dynamics and actor behaviours at play. The individual contributions examine the transposition of the patients' rights directive to the Europeanisation of pension reforms; the role of national parliaments in transposing social Europe; judicial Europeanisation; and the multi-level enforcement of EU decisions. Theoretically, the contributions in this book highlights the fact that implementation is often conditioned by domestic politics or comes as a 'random walk' due to organisational and cognitive constraints. Empirically, the volume has three main findings. First, the constitutive components of the EU tend to have a contradictory impact on the EU's social policies and the national welfare systems. Second, crises influence the implementation of social Europe, at times leading to a modification of fundamental principles and content, but not across the board. Third, as a result, there is evidence of differentiated Europeanisation. This book was originally published as a special issue of West European Politics.

Administering welfare reform - International transformations in welfare governance (Hardcover, New): Paul Henman, Menno Fenger Administering welfare reform - International transformations in welfare governance (Hardcover, New)
Paul Henman, Menno Fenger
R2,177 Discovery Miles 21 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

While reforms of welfare policies have been widely analysed, the reform of welfare administration has received far less attention. Using empirical case studies, this book provides significant new insights into the way welfare administration is being internationally transformed. Particular attention is given to the effect on welfare clients, staff and agencies. "Administering welfare reform" presents a critical analysis of governance practices in welfare administration and examines shifts in the participants, practices and processes of welfare administration. It presents original empirical case studies that highlight the effects of reforming welfare governance on welfare subjects, staff and agencies and provides a much-needed international and comparative perspective of changing welfare governance. This book is aimed at scholars and advanced students of sociology, social policy, economics, public administration and management, as well as social policy practitioners and service delivery workers.

Social Welfare Policy - Responding to a Changing World (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): John G. McNutt, Richard Hoefer Social Welfare Policy - Responding to a Changing World (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
John G. McNutt, Richard Hoefer
R3,284 Discovery Miles 32 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Social Welfare Policy: Responding to a Changing World is a topical, comprehensive introduction to social welfare policy. It uses a contemporary framework that explicitly addresses three forces that have redefined the social policy arena: the growth of the information economy, the rise of globalization, and our current environmental crisis. This framework is applied to the six traditional arenas of policy-child and family services, health and mental health, poverty and inequality, housing and community development, crime and violence, and aging, and explores how to find solutions to both long enduring and brand new problems. John McNutt and Richard Hoefer's introductory text represents a move forward in social welfare policy thinking that is built on the latest scholarship and teaches students that the time to create social policies for the future is in the present.

European Social Problems (Paperback): Stuart Isaacs European Social Problems (Paperback)
Stuart Isaacs
R1,284 Discovery Miles 12 840 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

European Social Problems is the first book to examine social issues in Europe from the perspective of the social sciences. It considers many of these social problems following the UK's 'leave' vote. Key topics examined here include: immigration; multiculturalism and religion; health; inequalities; education; riots and protest; drugs and crime; sexuality. These core issues run as a thread through Europe and are experienced by Europeans themselves as social problems. As such, this text facilitates students' direct engagement with some of the problematic constituents in their own lives. This text is suitable for those studying social policy, sociology, politics, international relations, criminology and education studies. In this way it functions as an accessible 'reader' for final year undergraduates as well as postgraduate students.

Researchers found themselves operating in a new and difficult context; they needed to act quickly and think collectively to embark on new research despite the constraints of the pandemic. This book presents the collaborative process of 14 research projects working together during COVID-19. It documents their findings and explains how researchers in the voluntary sector and academia responded methodologically, practically, and ethically to researching poverty and everyday life for families on low incomes during the pandemic. This book synthesises the challenges of researching during COVID-19 to improve future policy and practice. The Big Society Debate - A New Agenda for Social Welfare? (Hardcover): Armine Ishkanian, Simon Szreter The Big Society Debate - A New Agenda for Social Welfare? (Hardcover)
Armine Ishkanian, Simon Szreter
R3,184 Discovery Miles 31 840 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

'Before the 2010 General Election, David Cameron placed the ''Big Society'' at the heart of his efforts to rebuild Britain's ''broken society''. The essays in this volume probe the historical origins of the concept and seek to evaluate it in the light of both historical and contemporary evidence. They raise profound questions about the provenance of the ''Big Society'' and its relevance to contemporary social concerns. They should be of interest to anyone who cares about the past, present or future of British social policy.' - Bernard Harris, University of Southampton, UK 'There is nothing new about the notion of a Big Society. This book combines historical scholarship, international research and grassroots experience to shine a critical spotlight on the rhetoric behind the coalition government's big idea.' - Bill Jordan, University of Plymouth, UK 'Armine Ishkanian and Simon Szreter's fascinating book provides important insights into the way political elites use slogans and imagery to sway public opinion on social policy issues. This highly original work will be a major scholarly resource for years to come.' - James Midgley, University of California, Berkeley, US The expert contributors to this detailed yet concise book collectively raise questions about the novelty of the Big Society Agenda, its ideological underpinnings, and challenges it poses for policy makers and practitioners. The book is divided into two sections, history and policy, which together provide readers with a historically grounded, internationally informed, and multidisciplinary analysis of the Big Society policies. The introduction and conclusion tie the strands together, providing a coherent analysis of the key issues in both sections. Various chapters in this study examine the limitations and consider the challenges involved in translating the ideas of the Big Society agenda into practice. By drawing on international examples, from developed and developing countries in order to analyze and discuss Big Society policies, this book will prove invaluable for students, academics and policy makers. The citizen's stake - Exploring the future of universal asset policies (Paperback, Illustrated Ed): Will Paxton, Dominic... The citizen's stake - Exploring the future of universal asset policies (Paperback, Illustrated Ed)
Will Paxton, Dominic Maxwell, Stuart White
R803 Discovery Miles 8 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Can and should asset-based policies such as universal capital grants become a new pillar of the welfare state? Can they form the basis for a more egalitarian form of market economy? The citizen's stake throws open the debate by bringing together the ideas of leading thinkers in academia and policy to explore the future scope of asset-based policies in Britain. The book examines asset-based welfare in connection with a wide range of issues, from tax policy to childcare, and includes the results of two innovative studies of public opinion on capital grants and inheritance tax. It is the first time that public opinion work has been integrated with theory into a serious and cohesive consideration of practical options for the future of asset-based welfare. The citizen's stake is accessibly written and aimed at a broad audience of academics, students and policy-makers. Indeed, anyone interested in how this new policy field can and should develop will want to read this book. The discussions are relevant to academics, researchers and policy makers overseas, particularly in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Ireland and Sweden, where there is a high level of interest in this topic.

The Politics of Social Welfare Policy in South Korea - Growth and Citizenship (Paperback): Myungsook Woo The Politics of Social Welfare Policy in South Korea - Growth and Citizenship (Paperback)
Myungsook Woo
R1,336 Discovery Miles 13 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Politics of Social Welfare Policy in South Korea explains, in a comparative perspective, South Korea's ungenerous welfare policies. Building on welfare state theories underlining class politics and state actions, the theoretical framework also incorporates an institutional perspective. The state's ability to coordinate business and labor was the most important factor in shaping South Korea's welfare policies. In recent years, stronger labor union movement played a key role in extending welfare rights to the broader population. However, South Korean unions have used their newfound strength largely for promoting company welfare. Author Myungsook Woo believes the geopolitical context disfavors South Korean welfare policy and that the international economy generates mixed results on welfare policy. Although a full-scale South Korean welfare reform has been launched, comprehensive social protection is limited by constraints within the international economy. These mixed results, according to her, can be traced back to the domestic power constellation and the history of the state-sponsored system of economic coordination.

What Price the Poor? - William Booth, Karl Marx and the London Residuum (Paperback): Ann M. Woodall What Price the Poor? - William Booth, Karl Marx and the London Residuum (Paperback)
Ann M. Woodall
R1,377 Discovery Miles 13 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this fascinating book, Ann Woodall investigates and compares the work and thought of William Booth and Karl Marx, who both arrived in London in 1849. She draws comparisons between their responses to the intractability of the poverty of the 'submerged tenth' of London's population, and argues that Booth's pioneering work in establishing the Salvation Army and the development of Marx's economic theory began in their interactions with the London residuum. Each recognised that much of the suffering was caused by the workings of laissez-faire capitalism and that its total solution required a challenge to the existing economic system. What Price the Poor? raises important questions about the relationship between theological discourse and the sociological imagination, and it firmly places the development of theoretical and practical social analysis and application within the context of social history. It will appeal to all with interests in classical sociology and the history of social activism.

The Crisis of Welfare in East Asia (Paperback): James Lee, Kam Wah Chan The Crisis of Welfare in East Asia (Paperback)
James Lee, Kam Wah Chan; Contributions by Beng-Huat Chua, Chyong Fan Ko, Kyeung Mi Oh, …
R1,320 Discovery Miles 13 200 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Crisis of Welfare in East Asia adopts a unique and critical perspective on contemporary social welfare policies in East Asia. This edited volume reflects on current welfare theories and challenges the dominant productivist ideology that overemphasizes the influence of work and family. James Lee and Kam-Wah Chan bring together authors from different social policy domains to provide an updated assessment of inadequacies and limitations in current social policies as well as the problematic theories guiding them. The authors demystify the so-called 'East Asian Welfare Model' and reengage themselves in the identification of an appropriate welfare ideology, which includes a selective integration of social policy and economic development. The Crisis of Welfare in East Asia is a dynamic and enlightening read that will interest students of public policy and those interested in welfare capitalism.

Human dignity and welfare systems (Hardcover, New): Chak Kwan Chan, Graham Bowpitt Human dignity and welfare systems (Hardcover, New)
Chak Kwan Chan, Graham Bowpitt
R2,172 Discovery Miles 21 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Pro-'workfare' governments justify their policies by claiming 'workfare' helps enhance self-esteem and promote the dignity of unemployed recipients. On the other hand, welfare activists argue that 'workfare' suppresses the dignity of unemployed persons. This book examines the concept of human dignity in this context and attempts to clarify its meaning. For the first time, it formulates a framework for evaluating the dignity of welfare recipients; uses this framework to explore the dignity of unemployed persons in four different welfare systems: UK, Sweden, China and Hong Kong and compares the conditions of human dignity in each case and identifies factors which enhance or suppress it. Human dignity and welfare systems is important reading for students and academics in the fields of social policy, social work, philosophy and politics. It is also a useful reference text for politicians, welfare administrators and activists.

Bob Hudson
R854 R747 Discovery Miles 7 470 Save R107 (13%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Adult social care was the first major social policy domain in England to be transferred from the state to the market. There is now a forty-year period to look back at to consider the thinking behind the strategy, the impacts on commissioners and providers of care, on the care workforce and on those who use care and support services. In this book, Bob Hudson meticulously charts these shifts. He challenges the dominant market paradigm, explores alternative models for a post-Covid-19 future and locates the debate within the wider literature on political thinking and policy change.

"Brilliantly conceived and executed. . .[A] stunning work of public policy that, if embraced, could radically change 'welfare'--and America--as we know it."
--Robin D. G. Kelley, author of "Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination"

"[A] challenging and disturbing account of the impact of stereotypes in politics. Anyone interested in the means by which the poor, the unpopular, and the alienated are kept from participating in politics to demand better treatment should read this book."
--Frank R. Baumgartner, coauthor of "Agendas and Instability in American Politics"

"[An] excellent and outstanding book; Ange-Marie Hancock has established herself without doubt as a rising star in political science."
--Gerald Horne, author of "Race War! White Supremacy and the Japanese Attack on the British Empire"

Ange-Marie Hancock argues that longstanding beliefs about poor African Americanmothers were the foundation for the contentious 1996 welfare reform debate that effectively "ended welfare as we know it." By examining the public identity of the so-called welfare queen and its role in hindering democratic deliberation, The Politics of Disgust shows how stereotypes and politically motivated misperceptions about race, class and gender were effectively used to instigate a politics of disgust.

The ongoing role of the politics of disgust in welfare policy is revealed here by using content analyses of the news media, the 1996 congressional floor debates, historical evidence and interviews with welfare recipients themselves. Hancock's incisive analysis is both compelling and disturbing, suggesting the great limits of today's democracy in guaranteeing not just fair and equitable policy outcomes, but even a fair chance for marginalized citizens to participate in the process.
