Parliaments and Parties in Egypt (Paperback): Jacob M. Landau Parliaments and Parties in Egypt (Paperback)
Jacob M. Landau
R1,529 Discovery Miles 15 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Egypt was the first Arabic-speaking country to throw off the yoke of Turkish rule, with an attendant growth in European influence. The impact of the West was most obvious in the political-constitutional field, with the gradual adoption of Western patterns of government and political life. This book, first published in 1953, is the first work to trace the development of parliamentary institutions and political parties in Egypt and to consider the extent of Western influence on their inception, evolution and disruption. Based on both Arabic and European sources, it is a comprehensive examination of the subject, and is key to the understanding of the development of the modern Middle East.

Court Patronage and Corruption in Early Stuart England (Paperback, Revised): Linda Levy Peck Court Patronage and Corruption in Early Stuart England (Paperback, Revised)
Linda Levy Peck
R1,294 Discovery Miles 12 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Private alliances and exchange of favours permeated political, social, economic, and artistic life in early modern Europe. These informal patronage relationships, which helped construct ties between monarchs and political elites, were especially strong in early Stuart England. As court patronage grew, so did opportunities for betrayal and corruption. But was early Stuart government really more corrupt than Tudor government? Were the structures of governance becoming unworkable, or were they badly managed by the Stuarts? Did corruption aid modernization? In this study, Linda Levy Peck tackles these and other questions about the patronage that structured early modern society. She analyzes the language and common metaphors of patronage as well as the structures and networks that made patronage function. She then applies this analysis to studies of factions, favourites, naval venality, impeachment, monopolies, and more. Finally, the author argues that the increase in royal bounty in the early 17th century redefined the corrupt practices that characterized early modern administration. This book was the winner of the John Ben Snow Prize, 1991.

The Macroeconomics of Transition - Developments in East Central Europe (Hardcover, New): Andrzej Kondratowicz, Jan Winiecki The Macroeconomics of Transition - Developments in East Central Europe (Hardcover, New)
Andrzej Kondratowicz, Jan Winiecki
R4,232 Discovery Miles 42 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How successful has the transition to market economies proved in East-Central Europe? The decision by the East European countries to move to market economies was accompanied by much hypothesizing and expounding of economic theories. However, now that the initial euphoria has passed, it is time for a rational assessment of this transition and the success of those theories in practice. Since the more economically advance countries are situated in East Central Europe, Professor Winieck and Andrzej Kondratowicz have focused their study on Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and (former) Yugoslavia. The authors present a systematic account of macroeconomic developments and institutional changes in each of the countries up to the summer of 1991 and the collapse of, what was, Yugoslavia. They assess progress, dealing with the determinants of output, macro policies, wage, price and employment issues and the external balance. The authors give particular importance to institutional changes, since these have been particularly significant in the shaping of the macroeconomy. Each country report is preceded by a summary of common features of the transition and is followed by an analysis of theoretica

Authority in the Modern State (Works of Harold J. Laski) (Paperback): Harold J. Laski Authority in the Modern State (Works of Harold J. Laski) (Paperback)
Harold J. Laski
R1,253 Discovery Miles 12 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As a sequel to Studies in the Problem of Sovereignty, this volume, originally published in 1919, expands Laski's pluralist doctrine of the state, (using France as its reference) but covers rather broader ground, since its main object is to insist that the probem of sovereignty is only a special case of the problem of authority. The result is a positive, constructive analysis of politics and the theory of the state which examines the division and organisation of power, the limitations of power and the significance of freedom, the political theory of Bonald, the revival of traditionalism and the role of the Church and the Civil Service.

Iran - Political Culture in the Islamic Republic (Hardcover, New): Samih K. Farsoun, Mehrdad Mashayekhi Iran - Political Culture in the Islamic Republic (Hardcover, New)
Samih K. Farsoun, Mehrdad Mashayekhi
R4,582 Discovery Miles 45 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the Islamic revolutionary movement overthrew the Peacock Throne (the Shah) in 1979 the Islamic Republic has maintained its credibility and the loyalty of the people of Iran. It has survived an extremely destructive war with Iraq, isolation from the West and the rest of the Middle East except Syria, and the death of the Ayaltollah Khomeini.

This book explores the social transformation of Iran in this period stressing the importance of political culture and ideology. It argues that the systematic building of a legitimate Islamic political culture is the key to the success of the regime.

The authors of the book address specific aspects of Iran's political culture within a general theoretical framework laid out in the introduction. There is discussion of a wide range of topics ranging from the relationship of the individual to society to Westoxication, from Shi'ism to the Islamisation of film culture.

Hong Shen
R1,493 R1,278 Discovery Miles 12 780 Save R215 (14%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book examines the political-economic dynamics in the development of a leading global Internet giant: Alibaba. As both a prominent example of, as well as providing the basic infrastructure for, China's outward expansion, Alibaba demonstrates the complex interplay between different state agencies and units of capital in the context of the rise of global China. Hong Shen investigates the development and expansions of Alibaba and discusses how Alibaba has not only become a leader of China's increasingly globalizing internet but has also increasingly served as a basic infrastructure model for other Chinese companies to go global. Shen also addresses how this process has been constantly shaped and reshaped by complex state-capital interactions along the way. This book shows how different units of capital, both inside and outside of China, have interacted with Alibaba's developmental strategies and illustrates how different state agencies, both domestic and international, have enabled or constrained the company's development, especially its global expansion. This book will appeal to students and scholars of critical political economy of media, global media and digital industries, communication, technology and society, and internet studies. It will also be relevant to policy-makers working in the arena of global internet and trade policies.

CROSS REF DEV STUDIES Both Africa and the Middle East have sought alternatives to Western models of development. The last twenty-five years have seen political independence for the states of Africa and increased economic dependence on external aid. The Middle East, resource rich and water poor, continues economically robust but politically unstable. In both regions, widespread poverty continues as does the involvement of the West.
Clearly illustrated with basic maps of the countries discussed, The Changing Geography of Africa and the Middle East presents a systematic review of twenty-five years of development. The book will prove an invaluable guide to the physical, economic, social and political environments of contemporary Africa and the Middle East.

Britain and the French Revolution (Hardcover): Clive Emsley Britain and the French Revolution (Hardcover)
Clive Emsley
R4,131 Discovery Miles 41 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The French Revolution catapulted Europe into a new period of political upheaval, social change, and into the modern era. This book provides a concise introduction to the impact of the French Revolution on Britain and to the ways in which this impact has been assessed by historians. The book is organised thematically. It begins with a survey of the ideological debate sparked off by the Revolution discussing, in particular, the work of people such as Burke, Paine, Spence and Wollstonecraft. From here it presents an exploration of the Revolution s impact on * Parliamentary polities * The growth of radicalism and loyalism * The way in which French ideas influenced Irish aspirations to generate rebellion The third main section of the book focuses on the causes and course of Britain s war with Revolutionary France, and on the effects of the war on the home front, most notably the recurrent, serious food shortages.

Conceived in Liberty - The American Worldview in Theory and Practice (Hardcover): Jr. Tierney Conceived in Liberty - The American Worldview in Theory and Practice (Hardcover)
Jr. Tierney
R4,162 Discovery Miles 41 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Conceived in Liberty is a cultural, sociological and geopolitical review of the uniquely American notion that the country and its people are "exceptional." While all nations have their own patriotic commitments, no other people have outwardly declared their power as vigorously as have Americans, especially since World War II. John J. Tierney, Jr. advances the idea that liberty is the singular source of the power of the American worldview and all other elements of this society-equality, patience, charity, justice, etc.-are derived from liberty. He argues that this worldview comes from this one source and is responsible for the many movements that may engage the public's interest, such as women's rights, civil rights, and voting rights. Such movements are all positive, but they could not exist in a society devoid of liberty. Conceived in Liberty also traces other main components of the American worldview: geographic expanse, immigration, energy of the populace, diversity, public policies, and the elements that contribute to exceptionalism. Tierney is not blind to some of the deficiencies of the United States, but he posits that the liberty it manifests is truly the political globe's last, best hope.

Origins of the Crisis in the U.S.S.R. - Essays on the Political Economy of a Disintegrating System (Hardcover): Hillel Ticktin Origins of the Crisis in the U.S.S.R. - Essays on the Political Economy of a Disintegrating System (Hardcover)
Hillel Ticktin
R4,140 Discovery Miles 41 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Hillel Ticktin has been one of the most controversial figures in Soviet studies for 25 years. His assertions that the Soviet economy was hopelessly inefficient, that the ruble was a sham, and that the elite was desperate once sounded outrageous. Ticktin consistently argued that perestroika would fail. In his view the USSR was and remained inherently Stalinist. It might lurch back and forth between reformist and reactionary leadership factions but, the system could not evolve, nor could it be restructured. Ultimately, it could only disintegrate, and when it did, the workers would hold the balance. This collection of essays offers a thorough sample of his views.

Statebuilding and State Formation in the Western Pacific - Solomon Islands in Transition? (Hardcover): Matthew Allen, Sinclair... Statebuilding and State Formation in the Western Pacific - Solomon Islands in Transition? (Hardcover)
Matthew Allen, Sinclair Dinnen
R2,696 Discovery Miles 26 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a rigorous and cross-disciplinary analysis of this Melanesian nation at a critical juncture in its post-colonial and post-conflict history, with contributions from leading scholars of Solomon Islands. The notion of 'transition' as used to describe the recent drawdown of the decade-long Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) provides a departure point for considering other transformations - social, political and economic -under way in the archipelagic nation. Organised around a central tension between change and continuity, two of the book's key themes are the contested narratives of changing state-society relations and the changing social relations around land and natural resources engendered by ongoing processes of globalisation and urbanisation. Drawing heuristically on RAMSI's genesis in the 'state- building moment' that dominated international relations during the first decade of this century, the book also examines the critical distinction between 'state-building' and 'state formation' in the Solomon Islands context. It engages with global scholarly and policy debates on issues such as peacebuilding, state-building, legal pluralism, hybrid governance, globalisation, urbanisation and the governance of natural resources. These themes resonate well beyond Solomon Islands and Melanesia, and the book will be of interest to a wide range of students, scholars and development practitioners. This book was previously published as a special issue of The Journal of Pacific History.

The volume focuses more on the consequence of the actual management of the war rather than on the decision-making process proper.

Urban and Regional Change in Southern Africa (Hardcover): David W. Smith Urban and Regional Change in Southern Africa (Hardcover)
David W. Smith
R1,857 Discovery Miles 18 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Due to the high profile of the political situation in South Africa, developments in other countries in the region tend to be overlooked. Yet the area of Southern Africa is one of the most volatile in the Third World. The central aim of this book is to examine the spatial dimensions of contemporary change in the region and to explore the likely future directions of such change. Existing literature tends to concentrate on political change rather than its impact on the urbanization process. Moreover, it has also tended to focus on Africa as a whole or one particular state. Written by geographers and planners, "Urban and Regional Change in Southern Africa" brings a new dimension to this subject. The authors examine change in both the cities themselves and the regions in which they are located. The overall result is to set urban change in Southern Africa within its regional context and to contrast the impact that urbanization/political change has had in particular states, linked by common concerns. The book also examines why Southern Africa should be more volatile than other developing regions, despite having undergone the same process of urbanization. This book should be of interest to

Communism, Conformity and Liberties (Paperback, Revised ed.): Ferdinand Tonnies Communism, Conformity and Liberties (Paperback, Revised ed.)
Ferdinand Tonnies
R1,467 Discovery Miles 14 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

If there is a-"desert island" book in the conduct of social research, it is arguably this book. Whether in terms of sociological structures or psychological nuances, Communism, Conformity, and Civil Liberties, originally published in 1955, is a recognized landmark. Stouffer helped strengthen the fundamental liberties of all Americans by showing dangerous consequences of efforts to thwart a perceived Communist conspiracy, including some of the very real liberties that can be destroyed in the process of a witch-hunt. Stouffer explores attitudes of Americans against a backdrop of a history of intolerance that dates back to the Know-Nothing party before the Civil War and extending through the Ku Klux Klan after World War I. The overall results show a markedly strong relationship between perception of high national risk and personal intolerance of differences, and also the perception of threat and tolerance that operates as a predisposing tendency that affects judgments about specific political movements and events. Stouffer enriches the sense and meaning of survey research by emphasizing patterns of percentages rather than actual amounts; survey craftsmanship; the use of paired sampling techniques to reduce problems of chance; the importance of completion rates in survey research work; the importance of interruptions during a questioning period; the choice of field workers in performing the surveys. The actual survey instruments are included as prepared by the National Opinion Research Center and the Gallup Organization. They remain a model for large-scale samples of this kind. The beautiful, highly personal, introduction by James Davis places Stouffer in an appropriate academic and professional context. Stouffer was a great sociologist with two landmark efforts to his credit: The American Soldier and then Communism, Conformity and Civil Liberties. Professor Davis calls this "a great classic of empirical sociology." It is indeed that: a model of craftsmanship, exemplary argumentation, and presentation of data still unsurpassed. The book is not part of ancient history, but of living, democratic culture.

Feminist Review - Issue 39: Shifting Territories: Feminism and Europe (Paperback): The Feminist Review Collective Feminist Review - Issue 39: Shifting Territories: Feminism and Europe (Paperback)
The Feminist Review Collective
R665 Discovery Miles 6 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 1990s are proving to be a time, quite literally, of shifting territories in Europe - East and West. Both the revolutions in Eastern Europe in 1989 and the breaking of economic boundaries in 1992 are creating a new Europe; a Europe in which old questions have to be re-asked and old assumptions revaluated. This "Feminist Review" special issue, "Shifting Territories", explores these political changes in all their complexity, and in particular looks at how these changes will affect women and feminism. "Feminist Review" employs its perspective to ask such pertinent questions as: how can we make sense of these major transformations? How should we respond to them? What part should feminists play in the new world order? Is it so "new"? With articles covering the relationship between nationalism and feminism, the women's movement in Eastern Europe, feminism and the crisis of socialism, this "Feminist Review" special issue explores these shifting territories and tries to make sense of the reverberations affecting all our lives. This book should be of interest to academics and students of women's studies, cultural studies, media studies and literature, as well as the general reader intere
