R2,989 Discovery Miles 29 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This series is directed to healthcare professionals who are leading the tra- formation of health care by using information and knowledge. Launched in 1988 as Computers in Health Care, the series offers a broad range of titles: some addressed to specific professions such as nursing, medicine, and health administration; others to special areas of practice such as trauma and radi- ogy. Still other books in the series focus on interdisciplinary issues, such as the computer-based patient record, electronic health records, and networked healthcare systems. Renamed Health Informatics in 1998 to reflect the rapid evolution in the discipline now known as health informatics, the series will continue to add titles that contribute to the evolution of the field. In the series, eminent - perts, serving as editors or authors, offer their accounts of innovations in health informatics. Increasingly, these accounts go beyond hardware and so- ware to address the role of information in influencing the transformation of healthcare delivery systems around the world. The series also increasingly focuses on "peopleware" and the organizational, behavioral, and societal changes that accompany the diffusion of information technology in health services environments.

Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care (Paperback): M. Syed Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care (Paperback)
M. Syed
R1,605 Discovery Miles 16 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Formulating a diagnosis purely on the basis of clinical judgement can be fraught with difficulty and danger, yet this is the challenge faced every day by Primary Care physicians, who rarely have access to the diagnostic tools available to hospital-based colleagues.

"Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care" has been specifically written with the needs of the Primary Care physician in mind.

It examines the potential causes of common presentations and aims to help the physician differentiate between diseases, using history and examination alone.

Diseases are listed in descending order of prevalence, with the commonest causes first, while high-risk conditions are highlighted to ensure they are not overlooked. Its unique tabulated format ensures key information is easily accessible, and the user-friendly format ensures the book can be used during consultations, home visits, and on ward rounds.

Whether used by the undergraduate, postgraduate trainee or the experienced Primary Care physician, "Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care" is an invaluable tool designed to improve the reader's ability to diagnose on the basis of clinical judgement alone.

Clinical Judgement - Evidence in Practice (Paperback): Robin Downie, Jane MacNaughton Clinical Judgement - Evidence in Practice (Paperback)
Robin Downie, Jane MacNaughton
R2,473 Discovery Miles 24 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

There is a widespread view that modern medicine is primarily a scientific enterprise and that the decisions of clinicians follow from evidence-based science. In terms of this view the need for clinical judgement is minimal. The aims of this book are to make a case for the centrality and irreplaceability of clinical judgement, to identify the elements of good clinical judgement, and to suggest how these might be developed by using the humanities in medical undergraduate and postgraduate education. The authors argue that good clinical judgement requires both technical evidence and a humane attitude. But technical evidence is not always quantifiable or even scientific; it can be like that of the detective or the literary scholar. A humane attitude involves ethical sensitivity, but also a broad educated perspective which can be derived from the arts. The authors illustrate their argument by examining decisions made by doctors in clinical situations, in public health, and (in a chapter contributed by a hospital consultant) in resource management. About the authors: Robert S. Downie is Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow University since 1969. He is a member of the BMA Ethics Committee and co-editor of the Journal of Medical Ethics. He has published extensively in the field of medical ethics. Jane MacNaughton has recently taken the position of Director of Centre for Arts, Humanities, Health and Medicine at the University of Durham. Previously she was Clinical Lecturer in General Practice at Glasgow University and a part-time GP.

Musculo-skeletal Problems in Emergency Medicine (Paperback): Jim Wardrope, Bryan English Musculo-skeletal Problems in Emergency Medicine (Paperback)
Jim Wardrope, Bryan English
R3,889 Discovery Miles 38 890 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Musculo-skeletal problems underlie many of the cases seen by doctors working in accident and emergency departments. It is estimated that over 4 million patients per annum will attend an A & E department in England and Wales with such a condition. Although many of these problems may be considered less serious, when compared to others seen in A & E departments, a misdiagnosis could have far reaching and even fatal consequences. It is also the area where statistically A & E doctors are most likely to make an error of diagnosis. Musculo-skeletal problems in emergency medicine provides guidelines on the history taking and examination of patients with musculo-skeletal problems. The book starts by explaining the pathology of musculo-skeletal injuries, describing the wide range of non-traumatic musculo-skeletal problems that present to an A & E department. Each section of the body is then dealt with in detail, with advice given on the management of Uspecific patient presentations. Throughout, emphasis is placed on the diagnosis of traumatic and non-traumatic injuries, and detailed guidance provided on their initial investigation, management, and ongoing referral. This book is intended for

Critical Care Cases (Paperback): R.F. Armstrong, J. B Salmon Critical Care Cases (Paperback)
R.F. Armstrong, J. B Salmon
R3,880 Discovery Miles 38 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Doctors working for the first time in an intensive care unit are faced with a variety of extremely ill and technically demanding patients. Very often they are exposed to situations for which they have not been properly prepared. Although most disciplines and professional examinations now demand some understanding of intensive care, opportunities for learning intensive care medicine are limited, with few courses available. Critical Care Cases presents a cross section of common problems seen in intensive care, presented by experienced teachers working in this field. Each topic begins with a real life case history, complete with examination findings, biochemistry, and blood gases. The readers are then given the opportunity to consider how they would manage the situation, before turning over to find a full discussion and recommendations from an expert in the field. The book covers all the common intensive care problems, including: respiratory failure, trauma, infection, and neurological disorders, and will provide a stimulating and thought provoking text for anyone preparing to work in intensive care medicine.

A Companion to the Classification of Mental Disorders (Paperback): John E Cooper, Norman Sartorius A Companion to the Classification of Mental Disorders (Paperback)
John E Cooper, Norman Sartorius
R1,139 Discovery Miles 11 390 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A Companion to the Classification of Mental Disorders provides essential reading as a background and supplement to both the recently produced DSM-5 and the forthcoming ICD-11. It focuses on the processes of classification and diagnosis, and the uses for these classifications. The book emphasises the dangers of regarding any current psychiatric classification as true or complete, in view of the present partial state of knowledge about the causes and mechanisms of most mental and behavioural disorders. This book is unique in containing a number of chapters that give a brief history of the cooperative efforts and projects necessary for the production of internationally agreed psychiatric classifications. The discussion begins in 1965 with the US/UK Diagnostic study, the preparations for ICD-8 with its first international glossary, and the International Pilot Study of Schizophrenia, designed and coordinated by the World Health Organization. While recognizing the importance of the innovations of the DSM series of classifications of the American Psychiatric Association, the book also takes a truly international perspective. The expert authors are well placed to do this, having been personally involved in many of the collaborative studies and developments discussed. A Companion to the Classification of Mental Disorders is an illustration of how much international collaborative work has been necessary over several decades to produce the currently agreed classifications. There is still a long way to go, but a start has been made.
