This easy-to-use manual is a timesaving guide to assigning musculoskeletal impairment ratings for worker's compensation, personal injury, and disability claims. It follows most of the principles in the American Medical Association's Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment and presents these guidelines in quick-reference tabular format for busy clinicians. Section One summarizes the procedures and terminology of impairment rating. Section Two contains rating tables for the upper extremity, lower extremity, spine, pelvis, skin, and pain. Appendices include tables for converting ratings from one body part to another and combining multiple injuries.
1919. This is a text on using the eye as a diagnostic tool, with the belief that it reveals abnormal conditions and changes in every part and organ of the body. This science enables the diagnostician to ascertain, from the appearance of the iris, many of the patient_s inherited or acquired tendencies toward health and toward disease, his condition in general, and the state of various organ_s in particular. Reading Nature_s records in the eye, he can predict many of the healing crises through which the patient will have to pass on the road to health. The author also contends that the diagnosis from the iris of the eye positively confirms Hahnemann_s theory that acute diseases have a constitutional background of hereditary or acquired disease taints or systemic encumbrances.
This book puts forward a Hypothesis on the Origins of Cancer. In this context it investigates the pre-history of a malignant illness and the maldevelopments within the human organism occurring during this period. Central to the cause for the onset of cancer is an adrenaline deficiency caused by exhaustion of the chromaffin system after long-lasting stress. It will be demonstrated that an acid / alkali imbalance and the weakening of the immune resistance have a carcinogenic effect. Findings from experience point to the disturbance of the interaction between adrenaline and insulin, the resulting glycogen overloading and oxygen deficiency of cells, setting off the cells' emergency programme, namely anaerobic, i.e. restricted cell metabolism. Furthermore, a therapy based on this hypothesis on the origins of cancer is introduced, which has as its goal the healing of the organism of a malignant illness. This book is intended for a broad public readership and contains varied historic and general references in addition to the medical core subject.
What's your worst nightmare as a doctor? Missing a life-threatening
condition must be among the biggest fears for health professionals.
But sometimes the clue to the diagnosis lies in just a single
symptom. "Alarm Bells in Medicine" brings you up to speed on recognising
the symptoms of serious illnesses. Internationally renowned authors
list the most crucial presenting symptoms in their own specialties
that should ring the alarm bells for you. They provide clear
information on diagnosis and action. Organised under the relevant
specialties, the information is quick and easy to find. Since patients disclose alarm symptoms in all clinical settings,
this book is as relevant for consultants as it is for GPs, as
useful for junior doctors as it is for medical students. Special Features of this book:

Neurology is primarily characterized by a variety of diseases which seem very similar and are therefore difficult to distinguish between. Skill at differential diagnosis is therefore absolutely paramount. "Neurological Differential Diagnosis" is a streamlined handbook of "prioritized" differential diagnosis, to be used both in clinical practice and for exam review. By presenting differential diagnosis in order of frequency and importance, this book provides a practical handbook for clinicians in training, as well as a potential resource for quick board review. Whilst the book covers the most important syndromes and disease entities, readers are referred to other texts for more exhaustive differentials. By limiting differentials in this way - to the most likely and most serious diagnoses - the reader can more easily recall relevant disease processes when faced with a particular clinical situation, whether it be a patient in the emergency room or a difficult question on the board examination. The book specifically targets neurology residents and fellows, with overlap to neurosurgery and psychiatry. Internal medicine physicians with an interest in neurological problems and medical students looking for an edge in clinical neuroscience would also benefit from this text. The content is primarily mid-level material, in a pedagogic format. In order to organize the students' thought processes concise tables and line drawing templates are included. The book is organized into broad chapters by type of disorder and some overlap occurs between particular chapters.
An expert summary of our current understanding of bipolar disorder, this reference examines existing theories, treatment regimens, and clinically relevant applications by world authorities in psychiatric research. Sam, a final year medical student from the Royal Free and University College Medical School, London. Dr Huw Beynon, a Consultant General Physician and Rheumatologist at the Royal Free, is the Editorial Advisor for the book. He has been a chief examiner for the MBBS and MRCP for many years.

This groundbreaking book explains prognosis from the perspective of
doctors, examining why physicians are reluctant to predict the
future, how doctors use prognosis, the symbolism it contains, and
the emotional difficulties it involves. Drawing on his experiences
as a doctor and sociologist, Nicholas Christakis interviewed scores
of physicians and searched dozens of medical textbooks and medical
school curricula for discussions of prognosis in an attempt to get
to the core of this nebulous medical issue that, despite its
importance, is only partially understood and rarely discussed.

There are many problems in working psychotherapeutically across cultures, with numerous examples of failure to understand cultural issues. For example, the ignorance of traditional family structures can lead to major diagnostic and therapeutic errors. These errors include potentially disastrous transference relationship interpretations, the confounding of traditional beliefs with psychiatric symptoms, and a lack of awareness of differences in presenting symptomology. This book explains the theories and techniques of intercultural therapy. The second edition retains many of the ideas and practices developed in the first edition, but has been updated throughout to include the latest literature, and includes a new introductory chapter. A range of different views on intercultural therapy are given by a group of specialists who have pioneered this developing area. The late Jafar Kareem BSc was a member of the British Association of Psychotherapists, a member of the London Centre for Psychotherapy, and Founder and Clinical Director of Nafsiyat Intercultural Therapy Centre. Roland Littlewood BSc, MB, DPhil, FRCPsych, is Professor of Psychiatry and Anthropology, University College London, Joint Director of the UCL Centre for Medical Anthropology, Consultant Psychiatrist, Middlesex Hospital, and Medical Advisor, Nafsiyat.
Reviews of the First Edition . . . "This is the first major manual on Bender Gestalt testing in over 30 years, and includes detailed administration and scoring instructions, and data on validity and reliability." —Epilepsia. "This book will provide both psychologists and psychiatrists [with] a comprehensive yet easy-to-use manual for screening brain dysfunction." —Contemporary Psychiatry. "Dr. Lacks should be complimented for her treatment of the use of the BGT in screening for organic brain dysfunction." —Book Reviews in Neurosciences. Utilized for over 60 years by clinicians worldwide, the Bender Gestalt Test (BGT) today continues to be a widely used assessment tool to measure the cognitive domain of visuoconstructive abilities and to screen for brain dysfunction. Much of the BGT's popularity rests on its brevity, simplicity, and proven effectiveness with individuals from age 4 to 100. The test is often employed in inpatient psychiatric settings because of its ability to discriminate between brain impairment and serious mental disorders like schizophrenia. More recently, the BGT has also been used to identify older adults at high risk for cognitive decline. This Second Edition is fully revised and includes an up-to-date review of the relevant scientific literature on the test's reliability, validity, and diagnostic accuracy. The book also contains additional normative data, a discussion of malingering, and almost all new examples and practice case materials. Five new chapters address issues in neuropsychological screening, eight steps to interpretation of test results, and use of the Bender Gestalt Test with children, adolescents, and older adults. The book serves as a comprehensive manual for the administration, scoring, and interpretation of the Bender Gestalt Test. The diagnostic significance of general and specific behavioral observations is stressed and a format for recording them is included. For scoring, there are descriptions and multiple examples within the author's adaptation of the 12 errors of the Hutt and Briskin scoring system. The reader can use the 12 varied clinical case examples with explication of the scoring and 10 additional practice cases to gain rapid scoring facility and accuracy. Norms are provided for adult non-patients and psychiatric inpatients, nonpatient and demented older adults, and adolescents. Designed for practical use and adhering to APA standards for test manuals, Bender Gestalt Screening for Brain Dysfunction is a comprehensive and easy-to-use manual that will enable psychology clinicians, psychometricians, and graduate students to increase their level of diagnostic accuracy in screening for brain damage.
