This work presents an unflinching look inside the detective story that marks nearly every illness - the diagnosis - revealing the combination of uncertainty and intrigue that doctors face when confronting patients who are sick or dying.
Medical practice in the modern age requires familiarity with clinical guidelines and standards, which are often published separately in long and discursive documents. This new addition to the Oxford Medical Publications summarises the key clinical practice guidelines which all final year medical students and Foundation Year 1 and 2 doctors should know when managing common conditions. Logically organised by medical specialty, the reader can quickly familiarise themselves with the key principles of diagnosis and management at the appropriate level for beginning a new rotation on the wards. Each guideline summary is tailored to the education level expected of doctors in their first two years of training, with clear instructions for when a more senior colleague should be called upon to help. Written by a team of junior doctors under the supervision of senior clinicians, this is the first resource to distil a range of guidelines from different locations (such as NICE, SIGN, and more) into an easily digestible format. Practical and user-friendly, with tables, diagrams, flowcharts, and algorithms to convey the key points quickly and easily, Oxford Clinical Guidelines is the new invaluable resource for every final year medical student and doctor at the beginning of their training.

First published in 1912, French's Index of Differential Diagnosis helps clinicians in the differential diagnosis of any condition which may be seen in hospital or general practice. Arranged alphabetically by symptom, the text helps readers identify each presentation, describes the different diagnoses that it could represent, and explains the tests used to make a diagnosis. Colour clinical photographs help with diagnoses at a glance. The book is completely revised - many sections are largely rewritten, new ones added, diagnostic methods updated, many old illustrations replaced and others inserted. The emphasis, however, remains the same: the importance of a careful history, detailed clinical examination and the judicious use of laboratory and imaging investigations in the elucidation of the correct diagnosis. This reference is indispensable to medical students as well as trainee and established doctors in both general and hospital practice.
DSM-5 Handbook of the Cultural Formulation Interview provides the background, context, and detailed guidance necessary to train clinicians in the use of the Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI), which was created as part of the 2007-2013 DSM revision process. The purpose of the CFI-and this unique handbook-is to make it easier for providers to account for the influence of culture in their clinical work to enhance patient-clinician communication and improve outcomes. Cultural psychiatry as a field has evolved enormously from the days when it was principally concerned with epidemiological and clinical studies of disease prevalence; it now examines a multitude of issues, primary among them the differing patient, family, and practitioner models of illness and treatment experiences within and across cultures. The editors, all of whom have been intimately involved in the evolution of the field, have designed the book and accompanying videos for maximum instructional and clinical utility. The Handbook boasts many strengths and useful features, including: * A detailed description of each of the three CFI components: a core 16-item questionnaire, which can be applied in any clinical setting with any patient by any mental health clinician; an informant version of the core CFI used to obtain information from caregivers; and 12 supplementary modules that expand on these basic assessments. This material facilitates implementation of the CFI by clinicians.* Over a dozen clinical vignettes are included to illustrate use of the three components, and the Handbook also includes multiple videos that demonstrate the application of portions of the core CFI, and several supplementary modules.* Strategies for incorporating the CFI into clinical training are identified and discussed, furthering the objective of developing culturally-sensitive and astute practitioners.* The theoretical bases of the CFI are explored, raising questions for discussion and identifying areas for further research. The CFI is a valuable tool for all patients, not just those judged to be culturally different. The CFI has been called the single most practically useful contribution of cultural psychiatry and medical anthropology to clinical psychiatry, primary care, and medicine in general. DSM-5 Handbook on the Cultural Formulation Interview is the only book on the market that equips readers with the skills and insight to incorporate the CFI into practice, making it a critically important addition to the clinical literature.
Neurology for the Hospitalist is a concise and eminently practical resource for inpatient neurological care. Internal Medicine Hospitalists frequently face patients with neurological issues and many feel that their training was insufficient in this area. Hospitalists are often the primary inpatient care providers for this patient population as many perceive Neurology to be an Internal Medicine subspecialty. The format of the handbook allows one to quickly learn the differential diagnosis, appropriate testing, signs to watch for, and treatment strategies for the most frequently encountered neurologic conditions. Each topic covers commonly asked questions and elements that warrant close attention. For the hospitalist in particular, proposed quality metrics are given for major neurological diagnoses. No other book provides the hospitalist caring for patients with neurological issues the essential elements of that care in such a useable way. The focus is on practical information that will guide the best care.
The ability to interpret and synthesise medical data is essential for doctors, yet it is a skill which can be difficult to master. Data Interpretation Made Easy focuses on developing this skill by presenting an array of case-based themes considering interpretation of blood results, X-rays, ECGs and CT images in medicine with discussion of evidence-based practice. The concise, list-based text aids easy comprehension and images provide the much needed link from raw data to evidence-based care and management. This highly practical book is essential reading for undergraduate medical students preparing for examinations. It is also ideal for junior doctors needing a succinct guide to data interpretation for everyday use. 'Dr Neel Sharma's latest venture on data interpretation has dozens of credible clinical scenarios covering many key areas of clinical medicine. And you will certainly feel challenged, as he leaves it up to you to diagnose and devise the treatment plan.' From the Foreword by Tiago Villanueva
Despite diagnosis being the key feature of a physician's clinical performance, this is the first book that deals specifically with the topic. In recent years, however, considerable interest has been shown in this area and significant developments have occurred in two main areas: a) an awareness and increasing understanding of the critical role of clinical decision making in the process of diagnosis, and of the multiple factors that impact it, and b) a similar appreciation of the role of the healthcare system in supporting clinicians in their efforts to make accurate diagnoses. Although medicine has seen major gains in knowledge and technology over the last few decades, there is a consensus that the diagnostic failure rate remains in the order of 10-15%. This book provides an overview of the major issues in this area, in particular focusing on where the diagnostic process fails, and where improvements might be made.

This groundbreaking book explains prognosis from the perspective of
doctors, examining why physicians are reluctant to predict the
future, how doctors use prognosis, the symbolism it contains, and
the emotional difficulties it involves. Drawing on his experiences
as a doctor and sociologist, Nicholas Christakis interviewed scores
of physicians and searched dozens of medical textbooks and medical
school curricula for discussions of prognosis in an attempt to get
to the core of this nebulous medical issue that, despite its
importance, is only partially understood and rarely discussed.

This is a unique collection of poems written by and for people who have survived our mental health system and the diagnostic process that is used to categorise and treat mental and emotional distress. In October 2016, Jo Watson launched A Disorder for Everyone (AD4E) – an international campaign to challenge the culture of psychiatric diagnosis and the labelling of expressions of emotional distress as medical disorders. Since then hundreds of people have attended AD4E events all over the UK, and thousands have joined the campaign Facebook group ‘Drop the Disorder!’ What began as a shout of protest has become an international roar. Poetry has long been used to give voice to resistance and to drive change in all kinds of social movements, and it is a central aspect of this campaign as well. It has been at the heart of every AD4E event and, more recently, several online poetry events have brought together poets and poetry-lovers from across the globe under the Drop the Disorder! banner. We Are the Change-Makers is a collection of these and other poems that seek to describe the otherwise inexpressible and challenge the power of psychiatry that misrepresents and medicates what it does not understand. |
