Among the offspring of humans and other animals are occasional
individuals that are malformed in whole or in part. The most
grossly abnormal of these have been referred to from ancient times
as monsters, because their birth was thought to foretell doom; the
less severely affected are usually known as anomalies. This volume
digs deeply into the cellular and molecular processes of embryonic
development that go awry in such exceptional situations. It focuses
on the physical mechanisms of how genes instruct cells to build
anatomy, as well as the underlying forces of evolution that shaped
these mechanisms over eons of geologic time. The narrative is
framed in a historical perspective that should help students trying
to make sense of these complex subjects. Each chapter is written in
the style of a Sherlock Holmes story, starting with the clues and
ending with a solution to the mystery.
The natural world is full of awesome surprises, and the animal
kingdom is no exception. As The Secret Lives of Animals reveals, it
seems that the more we discover about the unusual species that
populate our planet, the more we understand just how ingenious,
resourceful and downright creative they can be! Did you know that
red pandas are not only incredibly cute, but also master escape
artists able to flee their enclosures in high security zoos all
over the world with alarming frequency? Or that beautiful manta
rays have not only been observed recognizing their own reflection
in mirrors, but are also able to identify friendly divers and ask
for their help when they're in a bit of a jam? Or that elephants,
as well as having famously impressive memories, are also
sophisticated communicators who send signals to each other using a
wide range of body language? Or that parrots, as well as being
amazing mimics, are able to learn dance moves? YouTube star
Snowball, the dancing cockatoo, has a very entertaining
fourteen-move repertoire. With charming and humorous illustrations
from BAFTA-award-winning artist Greg McLeod (half of The Brothers
McLeod), The Secret Lives of Animals is a window into some of the
most complex and impressive minds of the animal kingdom, revealing
the little-known skills and natural intuition that have allowed
them to survive - and often have a little fun along the way.
The RSPB’s Book of the Season The distinctive white-tailed sea
eagle was driven to extinction in Britain more than 200 years ago,
but this immense predator is making a return to our skies, thanks
to Roy Dennis, an ornithologist, conservationist and arguably the
driving force behind the UK’s reintroduction agenda. Roy was
instrumental in returning the Osprey, red kite and golden eagle to
the British Isles, but the road to reintroduction isn’t an easy
one. In what will surely be the seminal book on British
reintroductions, Roy details the painstaking process of returning
the Goldeneye to Scotland, one duckling at a time, the die-hard
determination needed to make a dazzling success of the red kite
reintroduction and the leap of faith we will all need to make to
accept sharing our forests and skies with large carnivores again.
He also illustrates all that we have to gain by restoring our
ecosystems to balance. Filled with a lifetime’s worth of stories
from the front lines of conservation, Reintroduction offers an
eye-opening insight into the complexities of reintroducing extinct
animals to Britain. It’s also an intimate portrait of these apex
predators and a reminder of why we need them.
Where there is no alternative to the use of animals in biomedical
research, it is important that experiments are well designed and
correctly analysed in order to minimise pain and maximize the
chance of getting scientifically valid results. Experiments that
use too few animals may fail to pick up biologically important
effects, while those who use them incorrectly or wastefully may get
invalid results while subjecting the animals to unnecessary pain,
distress or lasting harm. The Design of Animal Experiments is
intended for all research scientists who use laboratory animals,
with the aim of helping them to design their own experiments more
effectively and/or to improve their ability to communicate with
professional statisticians when necessary. It covers all randomised
controlled experimental designs likely to be needed in laboratory
animal research, with worked examples showing how they can be
statistically analysed. It suggests the more widespread use of
randomised block designs and shows how both males and females can
be included in an experiment without the need to increase the total
number of animals by using factorial designs. It also includes
guidance on the choice of experimental animals. The book covers the
learning outcomes of Module 10 and part (ii) of Module 11 of
education and training under Directive 2010/63/EU.
The Franciscana Dolphin: On the Edge of Survival provides the most
updated and comprehensive knowledge on the most endangered marine
mammal in the Western South Atlantic Ocean. It synthesizes all
available information on this dolphin species, also referred to as
La Plata dolphin, ranging from taxonomy, evolution, diet, parasites
and diseases, reproduction and growth, to genetic diversity and
stock definition, distribution, abundance, behavior, as well as the
threats and causes behind the dwindling population numbers. Written
by international experts, this book explores aspects of the
species' natural history and urgent problems of accidental
mortality in fishing nets, contamination, and habitat loss. It
offers the most current research and practices on rehabilitating
debilitated animals and presents initiatives at the regional and
international level for species conservation, including current and
potential strategies related to marine protected areas and public
policies. The Franciscana Dolphin: On the Edge of Survival is an
important resource for researchers and practitioners in marine
conservation, marine biology, and zoology, particularly those who
seek to gain the most reputable information on vulnerable marine
mammal species for conservation efforts. Policymakers and public
officials involved in environmental protection and planning will
also find this useful to combat similar threats with other dolphin
species around the world
Karl Koenig, the founder of the Camphill movement, had great
compassion and empathy for people on the margins of society. He
also felt the same brotherly feelings towards the animal world.
This remarkable book offers a closer understanding of some specific
mammals, fish and birds and, along the way, great insight into
human nature as well. Koenig considers the mythological and
historical background, and unique characteristics, of elephants,
bears, horses, cats and dogs; penguins, seals, dolphins, salmon and
eels; and swans and stork, sparrows and doves. Together, the lively
sketches form a visionary zoology. First published in English as
three separate volumes.

The integument plays an important role in the survival of meta
zoans by separating and protecting them from a hostile environ
ment. Its function ranges from protection against injury and in
fection, participation in the regulation of body temperature and
water balance, to respiratory activity, monitoring of the environ
ment and production of signals related to behaviour. All these
result from specific structural, biochemical and physiological
properties of intra-and extracellular components of the integu
ment. Thus its characterization can be best accomplished by a
multidisciplinary approach with authors specialized in different
fields of science. This multi-author book, in two volumes, provides
an up-to date survey of the literature. The first volume deals with
the integument of invertebrates, the second with that of
vertebrates, both organized primarily on a phylum basis. As the
level of knowledge on the integument of phyla differs considerably,
the information provided is correspondingly either limited or con
densed. For some of the smaller groups of invertebrates little
information is available, as often only a few electron micrographs
are to be found in the literature ; on the other hand, from the
large body of knowledge existing for vertebrates, particularly for
mammals, no complete overview can be provided, but publica tions
giving access to further information have been reviewed critically.
An engrossing and revealing study of why we deem certain animals
"pests" and others not-from cats to rats, elephants to pigeons-and
what this tells us about our own perceptions, beliefs, and actions,
as well as our place in the natural world A squirrel in the garden.
A rat in the wall. A pigeon on the street. Humans have spent so
much of our history drawing a hard line between human spaces and
wild places. When animals pop up where we don't expect or want
them, we respond with fear, rage, or simple annoyance. It's no
longer an animal. It's a pest. At the intersection of science,
history, and narrative journalism, Pests is not a simple call to
look closer at our urban ecosystem. It's not a natural history of
the animals we hate. Instead, this book is about us. It's about
what calling an animal a pest says about people, how we live, and
what we want. It's a story about human nature, and how we
categorize the animals in our midst, including bears and coyotes,
sparrows and snakes. Pet or pest? In many cases, it's entirely a
question of perspective. Bethany Brookshire's deeply researched and
entirely entertaining book will show readers what there is to
venerate in vermin, and help them appreciate how these animals have
clawed their way to success as we did everything we could to ensure
their failure. In the process, we will learn how the pests that
annoy us tell us far more about humanity than they do about the
animals themselves.
Raise a gaggle of geese, the unsung heroes of the small farm While
chickens preen in the spotlight, geese are the historic unsung
heroes of small farms and homesteads. Providing weed control, large
eggs, and entertainment, and acting as "security" over other
animals, geese are the ultimate modern homesteading companion. The
Modern Homesteader's Guide to Keeping Geese covers everything you
need to know to raise geese, including: Profiles of breeds and how
to select the best one for your needs How to "imprint" goslings on
a person Feeding, housing, animal health, and cold weather care
Using geese for weed control, soil improvement, and as
"watch-geese" Cooking with goose eggs and meat Additional coverage
includes a look at the rich history of geese on farms in North
America and Europe that will enhance any goose keeper's enjoyment
of these intelligent and unique birds. This practical guide is a
must-have essential for the kitchen table of homesteaders, small
farmers, permaculturists, and professional farmers looking to add
the power of geese to their land.
Microbes are known to live in an enormous range of environments.
Their ability to survive and proliferate in diverse industrial
systems is often a surprise to those not exposed to these problems
in their work. These systems contain a range of potential carbon
sources, one common theme being surfactants. Surfactants are often
not the components most prone to spoilage since some systems
contain highly susceptible natural components, such as starch and
xanthum gum, but the surfactant is a key part of the formulation,
and its extensive breakdown usually means that the material is
beyond recovery. The aim of this book is to describe in detail all
aspects of the preservation of surfactant containing materials. The
book should be viewed as being in three discrete sections. *
chapters 1-5 deal with and summarise essential background
information * chapters 6-11 discuss in detail various end use
applications * chapters 12-15 outline the regulatory and toxicology
implication associated with the safe handling of preservatives
Given the format of the book there is inevitably some duplication
of information in the middle section with different authors
describing essentially the same phenomena but on different
substrates. I hope the reader will find that although different
chapters touch on the same topics the information around these
areas is sufficiently different to justify their inclusion in this
book and to be of interest. It should also demonstrate what can be
the most useful source of information, the hard practical
experience of the authors.
