Alkali Halides - A Handbook of Physical Properties (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): D.B. Sirdeshmukh, L. Sirdeshmukh, K.G. Subhadra Alkali Halides - A Handbook of Physical Properties (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
D.B. Sirdeshmukh, L. Sirdeshmukh, K.G. Subhadra
R2,967 Discovery Miles 29 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The alkali halide crystals have always been at the centre stage of solid-state physics. They have been "model crystals" for testing many solid-state theories. In recent decades, they have also proved useful in several applications ranging from X-ray monochromators to tunable lasers. Because of this dual importance - both purely scientific and technological - a vast amount of information has been generated on all aspects of the alkali halides. This information has thus far been scattered throughout numerous journals and reference sources. This handbook brings together a wide range of information on the experimentally determined properties of the alkali halides. Some theoretically derived parameters have also been included. All the important literature from 1950 to 2000 has been surveyed. Providing in a single volume all essential information on the physical properties of alkali halides, this book will be a valuable reference for solid-state physicists and materials scientists.

Emerging Technologies and Techniques in Porous Media (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): Derek B. Ingham, Adrian Bejan, Eden Mamut, Ian Pop Emerging Technologies and Techniques in Porous Media (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Derek B. Ingham, Adrian Bejan, Eden Mamut, Ian Pop
R10,781 Discovery Miles 107 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Heat and fluid flow in fluid-saturated porous media has become increas ingly more attractive to researchers and thus it has become a very pro ductive field for many researchers and practical engineers in very diverse range of fields. The great interest in the topic stems from its widespread number of different practical applications in modern industries and in many environmental issues, such as nuclear waste management, build ing thermal insulators, geothermal power plants, grain storage, etc. In building sciences and thermal insulation engineering, an appreciable in sulating effect has been derived by placing porous material in the gap between the cavity walls and multishield structures of nuclear reactors between the pressure vessel and the reactor. Geophysical applications include modeling of the spread of pollutants (e. g. radioactive mater ial), water movements in geothermal reservoirs, enhanced recovery of petroleum reservoirs, etc. These, and many other, important practical applications have resulted in a rapid expansion of research in the general area of porous media and thus generated a vast amount of both theor etical and experimental research work. It has attracted the attention of industrialists, engineers and scientists from many varying disciplines, such as applied mathematics, chemical, civil, environmental, mechanical and nuclear engineering, geothermal physics, food science, medicine, etc. This book contains some of the contributions to the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Emerging Technologies and Techniques in Porous Media that was held in Neptun-Olimp, Constanta, Black Sea, Romania on 9-20 June, 2003."

Advances in Dendritic Macromolecules, Volume 5 (Hardcover): GR Newkome Advances in Dendritic Macromolecules, Volume 5 (Hardcover)
GR Newkome
R3,628 Discovery Miles 36 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The series "Advances in Dendritic Macromolecules" aims to cover the synthesis and supramolecular chemistry of dendritic or cascade super-molecules as well as their less perfect hyperbranched cousins.
This volume demonstrates the novel and varied growth in this topic and certainly pushes the supramolecular concepts of Lehn into the budding "supramacro-molecular" frontier.
In Chapter 1, Villavicenio and McGrath present their pivotal work in the creation of azobenzene-containing dendrimers; their Chapter describes the fundamental underpinnings to this interesting family. As they state in their summation, "A continuing combination of fundamental studies on the photomodulation of dendrimer properties in azobenzene-containing dendrimers and the new developments in the application of these materials to new and existing technologies is anticipated." The field of linear - dendritic block copolymers is summarized in
Chapter 2 from the eyes of Ivan Gitsov, who along with Professor Frechet were the initiators of this variety of macromolecules.
In Chapter 3, Astruc and colleagues present the recent advances in metallodendrimers, which incorporate ferrocenyl and/or other transition metal sandwich components; their Chapter capitalizes on the importance of supramolecular chemistry in these dendritic constructs.
Finally, in Chapter 4, Wiener and Narayanan describe the practical applications of dendrimers to the area of magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents. Each of these unique chapters covers a different perspective of this versatile group of macromolecules.

R7,462 Discovery Miles 74 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Celebrating Volume 100: Thirty years ago Springer-Verlag together with a distinguished Board of Editors started the series "Structure and Bonding." Initially the series was set up to publish reviews from different fields of modern inorganic chemistry, chemical physics and biochemistry, where the general subject of chemical bonding involves a metal and a small number of associated atoms. Three years ago the aims of the series was refined to span the entire periodic table and address structure and bonding issues wherever they may be relevant. Not only the traditional areas of chemical bonding will be dealt with but also nanostructres, molecular electronics, supramolecular structure, surfaces and clusters. With these aims in mind it is noteworthy that Volume 100 effectively reinforces and illustrates these ideals and is titled "Pi-Electron Magnetism" "from Molecules to Magnetic Materials."

Classical plasticity theory of metals is independent of the hydrostatic pressure. However if the metal contains voids or pores or if the structure is composed of cells, this classical assumption is no more valid and the influence of the hydrostatic pressure must be incorporated in the constitutive description. Looking at the microlevel, metal plasticity is connected with the uniform planes of atoms organized with long-range order. Planes may slip past each other along their close-packed directions. The result is a permanent change of shape within the crystal and plastic deformation. The presence of dislocations increases the likelihood of planes slipping.

Nowadays, the theory of pressure sensitive plasticity is successfully applied to many other important classes of materials (polymers, concrete, bones etc.) even if the phenomena on the micro-level are different to classical plasticity of metals. The theoretical background of this phenomenological approach based on observations on the macro-level is described in detail in this monograph and applied to a wide range of different important materials in the last part of this book.

The Method of Volume Averaging (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): S. Whitaker The Method of Volume Averaging (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
S. Whitaker
R4,950 Discovery Miles 49 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Multiphase systems dominate nearly every area of science and technology, and the method of volume averaging provides a rigorous foundation for the analysis of these systems. The development is based on classical continuum physics, and it provides both the spatially smoothed equations and a method of predicting the effective transport coefficients that appear in those equations. The text is based on a ten-week graduate course that has been taught for more than 20 years at the University of California at Davis and at other universities around the world. Problems dealing with both the theoretical foundations and the applications are included with each chapter, and detailed solutions for all problems are available from the author. The course has attracted participants from chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, hydrologic science, mathematics, chemistry and physics.

High-Temperature Superconductors: Materials, Properties, and Applications (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): Rainer Wesche High-Temperature Superconductors: Materials, Properties, and Applications (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Rainer Wesche
R4,359 Discovery Miles 43 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The discovery by J. G. Bednorz and K. A. Mtllier in 1986 that the superconducting state can exist in oxides at temperatures above 30 K stimulated research in the field of superconductivity and opened up a new field of research. Within a few years a large number of cuprate superconductors with transition temperatures well above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen have been found. The possibility of using liquid nitrogen as coolant re-stimulated interest in power applications of supercon ductivity. In this book an overview of the known high-Te superconductors and their physical properties is presented. Aspects related to conductor fabrication and high-current applications are emphasised. The material should be suitable for use in graduate level courses on superconductivity. Researchers in the field may profit from the large number of tables and references describing its status at the end of 1997. An introduction to high-To superconductivity must be based on the fundamental physical principles of normal-state electrical conductivity and the well-known characteristics of conventional superconductors. In Chapter 2 this background is provided. Crystal structures, anisotropic properties and general trends of the critical temperatures of the cuprate superconductors are described in Chapters 3 and 4. The processing of superconductor powders addressed in Chapter 5 affects considerably the current-carrying capacity of high-T. wires. In Chapter 6 several fabrication techniques for superconducting wires are described. In addition, the factors limiting the transport critical currents ofhigh-Te wires are discussed."

Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading: Mechanisms, Mechanics and Modelling (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): J. Bressers Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading: Mechanisms, Mechanics and Modelling (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
J. Bressers; Contributions by M. Steen; Edited by L. Remy; Contributions by J.L. Valles
R5,730 Discovery Miles 57 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The International Symposium "Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading", held at Petten (The Netherlands) on May 22-24, 1995, was jointly organized by the Institute for Advanced Materials of The Joint Research Centre, E. C. , and by the Societe Fran~se de Metallurgie et de Materiaux. The fast heating and cooling cycles experienced by many high temperature components cause thermally induced stresses, which often operate in combination with mechanical loads. The resulting thermal / mechanical fatigue cycle leads to material degradation mechanisms and failure modes typical of service cycles. The growing awareness that the synergism between the combined thermal and mechanical loads can not be reproduced by means of isothermal tests, has resulted in an increasing interest in thermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue testing. This trend has been reinforced by the constant pull by industry for more performant, yet safer high temperature systems, pushing the materials to the limit of their properties. Dedicated ASTM meetings in particular have set the scene for this area of research. The proceedings of the symposium organized by D. A. Spera and D. F. Mowbray in 1975 provided a reference book on thermal fatigue which reflects the knowledge and experimental capabilities of the mid-seventies.

Societal Implications of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): William S. Bainbridge Societal Implications of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
William S. Bainbridge
R4,342 Discovery Miles 43 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology promise to have major impacts on human health, wealth, and peace in the coming decades. Among the expected breakthroughs are orders of magnitude increases in computer efficiency, human organ restoration using engineered tissue, designer' materials created from directed assembly of atoms and molecules, and the emergence of entirely new phenomena in chemistry and physics. This book includes a collection of essays by leading scientists, engineers, and social scientists reviewing the possible uses of these impending technical developments in various industrial, medical, and national security applications, and the corresponding ethical, legal, social, economic, and educational issues that they raise. The report outlines potential areas for research into societal implications of nanotechnology, as well as some preliminary suggestions for how potential positive impacts of nanotechnology can be maximized, while minimizing any possible negative impacts, real or imagined. This book also provides the beginning of a blueprint for how one should address second-order consequences of the new technology, either positive implications or potential risks. This material was prepared under the auspices of the US National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI). The issues raised in the book are global in scope, going far beyond the immediate impact of the NNI. They ask the general questions of how history and the human condition are affected by technological progress, and how individuals and institutions can seek to guide that progress in ways most beneficial to mankind in the long run.
