The book describes the world's first successful experiment in fully automated board game design. Evolutionary methods were used to derive new rule sets within a custom game description language, and self-play trials used to estimate each derived game's potential to interest human players. The end result is a number of new and interesting games, one of which has proved popular and gone on to be commercially published.

Filtering and system identification are powerful techniques for building models of complex systems. This 2007 book discusses the design of reliable numerical methods to retrieve missing information in models derived using these techniques. Emphasis is on the least squares approach as applied to the linear state-space model, and problems of increasing complexity are analyzed and solved within this framework, starting with the Kalman filter and concluding with the estimation of a full model, noise statistics and state estimator directly from the data. Many applications in science and engineering require a digital model of a real physical object. Advanced scanning technology has made it possible to scan such objects and generate point samples on their boundaries. The use of new media in the service of cultural heritage is a fast growing field, known variously as virtual or digital heritage. Designing realistic supercomputer simulation models for the complete earthquake generation process is a grand scientific challenge due to the complexity of phenomena and range of scales involved from microscopic to global. The present volume - Part II - incorporates computational environment and algorithms, data assimilation and understanding, model applications and iSERVO. Topics covered range from iSERVO and QuakeSim: implementing the international solid earth research virtual observatory by integrating computational grid and geographical information web services; LURR (Load-Unload Response Ratio) described in six papers involving this promising earthquake forecasting model; pattern informatics and phase dynamics and their applications, which was also a highlight in the Workshop; computational algorithms, including continuum damage models and visualization and analysis of geophysical datasets; evolution of mantle material; the state vector approach; and assimilation of data such as geodetic data, GPS data, and seismicity and laboratory experimental data.
This book is the outcome of a project that started with the organisation of theTopicalWorkshopon"Agent-BasedComputationalModelling. AnInst- ment for Analysing Complex Adaptive Systems in Demography, Economics and Environment" at the Vienna Institute of Demography, December 4-6, 2003. The workshop brought together scholars from several disciplines, all- ing both for serious scienti?c debate and for informal conversation over a cup co?ee or during a visit to the wonderfulmuseums of Vienna. One of the nicest features of Agent-Based Modelling is indeed the opportunity that scholars ?nd a common language and discuss from their disciplinary perspective, in turn learning from other perspectives. Given the success of the meeting, we found it important to pursue the purpose of collecting these interdisciplinary contributions in a volume. In order to ensure the highest scienti?c standards for the book, we decided that all the contributions (with the sole exception of the introductory chapter) should have been accepted conditional on peer reviews.
