Neil Leifer is the best-known sports photographer of the past half
century. Beginning in 1960, his pictures have regularly appeared in
every major national magazine, including the Saturday Evening Post,
Look, LIFE, Newsweek, and, most often, Sports Illustrated and Time,
and his photographs have run on over two hundred Sports
Illustrated, Time, and People covers. Leifer has photographed
sixteen Olympic Games, fifteen Kentucky Derbies, countless World
Series, the first twelve Super Bowls, four FIFA World Cups, and
every important heavyweight title fight since Ingemar Johansson
beat Floyd Patterson in 1959. He has photographed his favorite
subject, Muhammad Ali, at thirty-five of his fights, including all
the big ones. Now, in Relentless, Leifer takes us behind the scenes
of some fifty of his most iconic pictures. Starting with his shot
of Baltimore Colt Alan Ameche scoring the game-winning touchdown
against the New York Giants during sudden death overtime in the
1958 NFL Championship game at Yankee Stadium-taken on Leifer's
sixteenth birthday-he tells enthralling, often hilarious stories of
getting to the right place at the right time to capture many of the
legendary athletes of the twentieth century, including Mickey
Mantle, Arthur Ashe, Willie Mays, Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Namath,
and Arnold Palmer, as well as shooting presidential and celebrity
portraits and covering a variety of subjects for Time. Recapping
both an incredibly successful career and the transformation of
photojournalism since the era of the great photo magazines,
Relentless effectively chronicles fifty years of American popular
culture..

This volume in the Chen Kung Series is a landmark translation
and explanation of Taijiquan's most profound text-the Yang family's
secret training journal on Intrinsic Energies (Jin). The commentary
brilliantly explicates a work that will be an essential reference
for any Taijiquan practitioner. Intrinsic Energies are the profound
and marvelous skills of an accomplished Taijiquan master. They are
the very foundation of self-defense skills in Taijiquan and are
what sets Taijiquan apart and beyond all other styles of martial
art. Anyone interested in developing their Taijiquan skills to the
highest levels needs to read and study this work.
"I predict that this will be one of the most important works on
T'ai Chi yet to be published in English. While the text itself is
enlightening, the real pearls of knowledge contained in this book
are to be found in Olson's commentary. Concepts and ideas typically
mystified by practitioners are masterfully presented in a clear,
direct manner."-Dan Miller, editor "Pa Kua Chang Journal"
The information in Stuart Alve Olson's six-volume Chen Kung
Series, available to the Chinese reader since 1936, covers the
entire Yang family system of Taijiquan practice and philosophy.
Chen Kung's original Chinese book is a distinct and invaluable
resource that is now accessible to English readers through the
brilliant translation work and insightful commentary of Stuart Alve
Olson.
No matter what style of Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) you practice
or what level of skill you have achieved, the Chen Kung Series will
greatly broaden your knowledge and skills, as it is truly a
"Master's Program" on the art of Taijiquan.
A Special Self Defense System for Seniors... The older
population--persons 65 years or older--numbered 39.6 million in
2009. We represent about 13% of the U.S. population, about one in
every eight Americans. By 2030, there will be about 72.1 million,
more than twice our number in 2000. People who grew up in the
1930s, 1940s, and 1950s were generally raised to be polite and
trusting. Criminals exploit these traits. Senior citizens are most
likely to have a "nest egg," to own their home, and to have
excellent credit; all of which make them attractive to con artists,
thugs and burglars. On city streets thugs regard us as low risk
targets of opportunity. Prepared specially for seniors, this book
opens the door to self defense for almost 40 million Americans age
65 and better. Regular martial arts classes abound in all
communities but they assume a level of agility, balance, strength,
and stamina that evaporated from most people long before senior
status was reached. This book bridges the age gap. It introduces a
self defense technique that gives seniors an edge. Self Defense for
Seniors will be followed by two other books; Self Defense for
Single Seniors, and Self Defense for Traveling Seniors.
In this highly anticipated sequel to his classic 1976 guide to
goju-ryu fundamentals, the author recounts his personal history of
Okinawan goju-ryu karate and provides readers with a profile of his
teacher, Chojun Miyagi, and Miyagi's assistant, Seko Higa.
"Okinawan Goju-Ryu" covers advanced kata, its evolution and its
importance. Step-by-step photographs throughout the book show the
advanced techniques of shorei-kan karate, including stances,
strikes, blocks, kicks and two-man training styles.
The Knife Training Methods and Techniques for Martial Artists
series gives the martial arts interested person a solid background
on the importance of the knife as a combat weapon, inspires the
reader about the benefits of knife training, and provides detailed
instruction in how to manipulate and defend against a knife with
speed, proficiency, and confidence. Almost any martial art,
traditional or modern, can be adapted to knife offense and defense
without changing the basic principles of the art. Since the knife
is a relatively small and lightweight weapon, many of the moves and
movement patterns you use in your empty-hand art are easily
transferable to your knife techniques, and vice versa. The
practical lessons you learn by adding knife training to your
arsenal include quick reaction skills, physical and mental control,
footwork and evasion tactics, distance control, and target
precision. Knife training gives you a decided physical and mental
edge and opens new dimensions that will deepen your understanding
of the martial arts. This special volume contains the following
five books with focus on deploying and attacking with the knife
(each book can also be purchased separately): 1. Knife Anatomy 2.
Knife Carry and Deployment 3. Knife Grip and Manipulation 4. Knife
Attacks and Targets 5. Knife Fighting Stance, Footwork, and
Dynamics of Motion Look also for the following books with focus on
defending against knife attacks: 1. Knife Defense Basics 2. Knife
Defense Dynamics Several more books in the Knife Training Methods
and Techniques for Martial Artists series will be forthcoming.
