One evening, journalist Eric Siblin attended a recital of Johann
Sebastian Bach's "Cello Suites" and began an epic quest that would
unravel three centuries of intrigue, politics, and passion. Winner
of the Mavis Gallant Prize for Nonfiction and the McAuslan First
Book Prize, "The Cello Suites" weaves together three dramatic
narratives: the disappearance of Bach's manuscript in the
eighteenth century; Pablo Casals's discovery and popularization of
the music in Spain in the late-nineteenth century; and Siblin's
infatuation with the suites in the present day. The search led
Siblin to Barcelona, where Casals, just thirteen and in possession
of his first cello, roamed the backstreets with his father in
search of sheet music and found Bach's lost suites tucked in a dark
corner of a store. Casals played them every day for twelve years
before finally performing them in public. Siblin pursues the
mysteries that continue to haunt this music more than 250 years
after its composer's death: Why did Bach compose the suites for the
cello, then considered a lowly instrument? What happened to the
original manuscript? A seamless blend of biography and music
history, "The Cello Suites" is a true-life journey of discovery,
fueled by the power of these musical masterpieces.

tour of autumn, presenting well-loved songs such as 'September in
the Rain', 'Autumn Leaves', 'Danny Boy', and '(Somewhere) Over the
Rainbow' and original compositions on other seasonal themes. The
nine pieces reflect a wide variety of jazz styles, including swing,
blues, calypso, and bossa nova, and draw on artists such as Yehudi
Menuhin, Stephane Grappelli, Didier Lockwood, and Regina Carter.
With fully notated rhythms, grooves, and improvisations, Violin
Jazz in Autumn is the perfect collection for instrumentalists
looking for that authentic sound.
An addition to the Cello Time series for young cellists, this book
provides cello accompaniments to all of the pieces in Cello Time
Cello Time Sprinters. The duet part is suitable for a teacher or
more advanced student, and this duet book will enhance lessons by
providing an alternative accompaniment option for these popular
pieces.
Violin Jazz on a Winter's Night is a Christmas album of stylish,
swinging arrangements for violin and piano. Favourite Christmas
carols and songs are given the complete jazz treatment, with
rhythm, embellishment, grooves, and solos all carefully notated.
The expertise of the arranger, a celebrated jazz musician and
composer, guarantees an authentic jazz sound, and a range of styles
from Nat King Cole to John Coltrane. While paying homage to
American Christmas jazz, the collection also reflects a European
tradition, in such time-honoured classics as 'In the bleak
mid-winter'.
Yehudi Menuhin shares with the reader his unique store of
understanding about the violin, about how to exercise and practise,
about the techniques of performance. His reflections on the nature
and scope of his instrument are profoundly illuminating and his
theories on interpretation particularly valuable. A section on the
violinist as teacher/student contains a fascinating transcript of a
lesson with Yehudi Menuhin, who also writes separately about the
violinist as orchestral player, leader, chamber music player,
recitalist and soloist. William Primrose writes the distinguished
monograph on the viola and describes the instrument as 'a violin
with a college education'. He was an acknowledged technical master
of the viola who, along with Lionel Tertis, was one of the finest
exponents of this beautiful instrument of the 20th century. Denis
Stevens, the British musicologist and specialist in early music,
provides and interesting chapter on the history of the violin and
looks in detail at the monumental challenge that is Bach's Six
Solos for Violin without Bass Accompaniment better known as the
Sonatas and Partitas for Violin.
This fun and innovative collection introduces cellists to a range
of pop and rock styles. Building on the trail-blazing approach to
cello playing that he developed in Ten American Cello Etudes and
Ten International Cello Encores, Aaron Minsky presents the
intermediate student with attractive new pieces that explore a
number of technical and musical challenges.

In the early seventeenth century, enthusiasm for the violin swept
across Europe-this was an instrument capable of bewitching
virtuosity, with the power to express emotions in a way only before
achieved with the human voice. With this new guide to the Baroque
violin, and its close cousin, the Baroque viola, distinguished
performer and pedagogue Walter Reiter puts this power into the
hands of today's players. Through fifty lessons based on the
Reiter's own highly-renowned course at The Royal Conservatory of
the Hague, The Baroque Violin & Viola, Volume I provides a
comprehensive exploration of the period's rich and varied
repertoire. Volume I covers the basics of choosing a violin,
techniques to produce an ideal sound, and sonatas by Vivaldi and
Corelli. Practical exercises are integrated into each lesson, and
accompanied by rich video demonstrations on the book's companion
website. Brought to life by Reiter's deep insight into key
repertoire based on a lifetime of playing and teaching, The Baroque
Violin & Viola, Volume I: A Fifty-Lesson Course will enhance
performances of professional and amateur musicians alike.
