Time Pieces is an exciting new series of repertoire which explores
the wealth of music written from the sixteenth century to the
present day. The pieces are presented chronologically within each
volume and all include the year in which they were written too so
you can map your journey through time. Time Pieces for Cello is a
three-volume anthology providing a graded selection of well-crafted
and idiomatic arrangements, as well as some original pieces, for
cello and piano. All of them have been carefully written to provide
practice of the keys, note ranges and fingering patterns
encountered in the early grades, and there are suggestions for
position work and varied bowing patterns. Each volume balances
well-known pieces with less familiar music, and the emphasis
throughout is on tuneful repertoire perfectly suited to the cello
with a simple supportive piano accompaniment. From Tallis to
Tchaikovsky and from Haydn to Britten, Time Pieces for Cello allows
the pupil to get a real feel for the different styles of music
through tune and will prove an invaluable, varied source of further
study and recital repertoire. Perfect for learners exploring
repertoire for the own-choice piece in ABRSM's Performance Grade
exams

Among the great names in the history of harpsichord making, that of
the Ruckers is probably the most famous. This dynasty of makers,
represented by four generations active in Antwerp between c.1580
and c.1680, exerted a predominant influence in Western Europe.
Their harpsichords and virginals, synonyms of extraordinary
workmanship, acquired a tremendous reputation that extended beyond
European borders and lasted until well after their active period.
The envy they inspired was such that it gave rise to large-scale
counterfeiting, probably the most significant in the field of
instrument making up to then. The MIM, the Musical Instruments
Museum, Brussels, owns eighteen instruments considered at the time
of their acquisition to be Ruckers. Given the considerable
patrimonial interest of this collection, a project centred on its
conservation, study, restoration and enhancement was set up. The
present publication sums up this fascinating research and sheds new
light on this outstanding heritage.
A good guitar repairman is hard to find, and when found, a long
waiting list seems inevitable. Those who have confronted this
problem may now turn to Don E. Teeter's encyclopedic treatment of
guitar adjustment, maintenance, and repair. Profusely illustrated
with line drawings and photographs and written in a clear and
straightforward style, this book takes the reader on a guided tour
of the acoustic guitar's various parts and their functions. Teeter
provides detailed instructions for disassembling and assembling
guitars, describes the tools and materials used in their repair,
and gives step-by-step procedures for major and minor repairs,
inlay work, and refinishing.
The book is not just for the experts in guitar repair. As Teeter
notes, "Quite a few of the techniques listed in this manual, such
as adjusting tension rods, adjusting string heights (action),
repairing minor cracks, setting movable bridges for proper
intonation (note accuracy), dressing and polishing frets, gluing
loose bridges, changing machine heads and of course, the proper
care and maintenance of the instruments, are within the
capabilities of the average amateur with limited tools."

(Music Sales America). Over 350 authentic bluegrass licks are
included in this book, which also discusses how to apply the licks
to create your own solos and expand your musical understanding and
knowledge of the fingerboard. It features special sections on
bluesy licks, trail-offs, playing in closed positions up the neck,
crosspicking, floating, double stops, and more. A special celebrity

Because a fine orchestra depends on fine players, Solo Time for
Strings emphasizes individual accomplishment, progress, and
achievement while preparing young students for participation in a
school orchestra. The series teaches reading in conjunction with
note learning, enabling students to start playing melodies as soon
as possible, and is appropriate for class or individual
instruction. The solos assist in a progressive technical
development from "twinkle, twinkle" in Book 1 to music by Vivaldi
in Book 5.
Yehudi Menuhin shares with the reader his unique store of
understanding about the violin, about how to exercise and practise,
about the techniques of performance. His reflections on the nature
and scope of his instrument are profoundly illuminating and his
theories on interpretation particularly valuable. A section on the
violinist as teacher/student contains a fascinating transcript of a
lesson with Yehudi Menuhin, who also writes separately about the
violinist as orchestral player, leader, chamber music player,
recitalist and soloist. William Primrose writes the distinguished
monograph on the viola and describes the instrument as 'a violin
with a college education'. He was an acknowledged technical master
of the viola who, along with Lionel Tertis, was one of the finest
exponents of this beautiful instrument of the 20th century. Denis
Stevens, the British musicologist and specialist in early music,
provides and interesting chapter on the history of the violin and
looks in detail at the monumental challenge that is Bach's Six
Solos for Violin without Bass Accompaniment better known as the
Sonatas and Partitas for Violin.

Air Guitar is renegade art critic and Art Issues editor Dave
Hickey's assessment of the beauties and potentialities of American
culture, "high" and "low, " presented in a series of reflections on
his experiences as the child of a jazz musician, abortive graduate
student, amateur art dealer, professional songwriter, music
journalist, and resident of Las Vegas.
The banjo has been called by many names over its history, but they
all refer to the same sound-strings humming over skin-that has
eased souls and electrified crowds for centuries. The Banjo invites
us to hear that sound afresh in a biography of one of America's
iconic folk instruments. Attuned to a rich heritage spanning
continents and cultures, Laurent Dubois traces the banjo from
humble origins, revealing how it became one of the great stars of
American musical life. In the seventeenth century, enslaved people
in the Caribbean and North America drew on their memories of varied
African musical traditions to construct instruments from carved-out
gourds covered with animal skin. Providing a much-needed sense of
rootedness, solidarity, and consolation, banjo picking became an
essential part of black plantation life. White musicians took up
the banjo in the nineteenth century, when it became the foundation
of the minstrel show and began to be produced industrially on a
large scale. Even as this instrument found its way into rural white
communities, however, the banjo remained central to African
American musical performance. Twentieth-century musicians
incorporated the instrument into styles ranging from ragtime and
jazz to Dixieland, bluegrass, reggae, and pop. Versatile and
enduring, the banjo combines rhythm and melody into a single
unmistakable sound that resonates with strength and purpose. From
the earliest days of American history, the banjo's sound has
allowed folk musicians to create community and joy even while
protesting oppression and injustice.
