Ayke Agus recalls the very afternoon he asked her to stay after class: "With that afternoon commenced my fifteen years of bittersweet association with Jascha Heifetz through hell and high water, from musical exultation to mundane daily care, a relationship in which sometimes I was the whipping post and at other times the spiritual counsellor of a superannuated, insecure, and immature child who often threw away what he wanted and wanted badly what he rejected. Through all these tribulations, music was the spiritual bond that kept us together and made it possible for me to put up with the paradox he represented." The aged Heifetz, violinist of the century, had much to tell, and Ayke, a young woman from Indonesia - Heifetz preferred "from the jungles of Java" - absorbed it all as they shared their stories about their lives and about music making.

This book is part player's manual, part historical profile, and part musical portrait. It explores in-depth all facets of jazz bass playing - from the development of "walking" and other techniques, to the human and musical interaction inside a rhythm section, to the bassists who made their instrument an integral part of America's greatest art form. Citing examples from key recordings in the jazz canon, the book defines the essence of the musical contributions made by every important jazz bassist. These achievements are explained both conceptually and technically, helping musicians and fans alike understand the art and craft of jazz bass playing. Bassists get expert guidance on mastering proper technique, practice methods, and improvisation, plus new insight into the theoretical and conceptual aspects of jazz. The companion CD featuring bass plus rhythm section allows readers to hear technical examples from the book, presented in slow and fast versions. It also offers play-along tracks of typical chord progressions.

Drawing on her high level of technical proficiency, professional violinist Maureen Taranto-Pyatt shares practical guidance in her new methodology, "Progressive Form." With The New Art of Violin Playing, violinists will learn to appreciate the physics (weight and momentum) and geometry (angles and rotations) of movement with an accurate understanding of anatomy and physiology in order to facilitate a nuanced flow of compression and release. Featuring nearly 400 images and music examples to illustrate elements of technique, balance, and gesture, this accessible guide will help musicians manifest deeper meaning and greater satisfaction in making music. Taranto-Pyatt divides the material into three parts—Left Arm, Right Arm, and Integration—that can be used as a step-by-step retooling of technique or as a reference for targeted issues. A comprehensive exploration of method in service of musical expression, The New Art of Violin Playing offers the serious violinist a path toward a more integrated and liberated musical world through the combined use of balance concepts, guided movement, and creative images.

Time Pieces is an exciting new series of repertoire which explores the wealth of music written from the sixteenth century to the present day. The pieces are presented chronologically within each volume and all include the year in which they were written too so you can map your journey through time. Time Pieces for Cello is a three-volume anthology providing a graded selection of well-crafted and idiomatic arrangements, as well as some original pieces, for cello and piano. All of them have been carefully written to provide practice of the keys, note ranges and fingering patterns encountered in the early grades, and there are suggestions for position work and varied bowing patterns. Each volume balances well-known pieces with less familiar music, and the emphasis throughout is on tuneful repertoire perfectly suited to the cello with a simple supportive piano accompaniment. From Tallis to Tchaikovsky and from Haydn to Britten, Time Pieces for Cello allows the pupil to get a real feel for the different styles of music through tune and will prove an invaluable, varied source of further study and recital repertoire. Perfect for learners exploring repertoire for the own-choice piece in ABRSM's Performance Grade exams
