This truly global and visually stunning compendium showcases
some of the most breath-taking pieces of street art and graffiti
from around the world. Since its genesis on the East Coast of the
United States in the late 1960s, street art has travelled to nearly
every corner of the globe, morphing into highly ornate and vibrant
new styles. This unique atlas is the first truly geographical
survey of urban art, revised and updated in 2023 to include new
voices, increased female representation and cities emerging as
street art hubs. Featuring specially commissioned works from major
graffiti and street art practitioners, it offers you an insider’s
view of the urban landscape as the artists themselves experience
it. Organized geographically, by continent and by city – from New
York, Los Angeles and Montreal in North America, through Mexico
City and Buenos Aires in Latin America, to London, Berlin and
Madrid in Europe, Sydney and Auckland in the Pacific, as well as
brand new chapters covering Africa and Asia – it profiles more
than 100 of today’s most important artists and features over 700
astonishing artworks. This beautifully illustrated book, produced
with the help of many of the artists it features, dispels the idea
of such art as a thoughtless defacement of pristine surfaces, and
instead celebrates it as a contemporary and highly creative
inscription upon the skin of the built environment.
Distinctive hand style lettering is an essential skill for artists
and designers. Deftly executed hand crafted letter forms are a
nearly forgotten art in an age of endless free fonts. Graffiti is
one of the last reservoirs of highly refined, well practiced
penmanship. The most reviled and persecuted form of Graffiti, the
Tag, is seldom appreciated for the raw beauty of its skeletal
letter forms. Most tags are removed immediately, and thus the
casual viewer seldom has a chance to discern the difference between
entry level and advanced hand styles. Within the pages of Flip the
Script, author Christian Acker has systematically analyzed the best
graffiti hand styles, contextualizing the work of graffiti writers
from around the United States. Acker presents the various lettering
samples in a clean organized format, giving the material a proper,
formal treatment evoking classic typography books.
Today, known for its black and white portraits covering entire
buildings, Hendrik Beikirch today presents the Siberia project, a
project in the continuity of Tracing Morocco started in 2014. The
intensity of these powerful foreign faces recalls a familiarity
that can be experienced anywhere in the world. Beikirch takes these
studies of humanity with him on his travels and permeates them as
traces of personified life in new contexts. The project is the
result of Beikirch's meeting with this distant immensity that is
Siberia. From this project was born the book Siberia, which gives
an overview of all the works created, paintings, and 10 murals
carried out all over the world. Text in English, French and
Russian.
Just a game? This intriguing visual title looks deep into the
underbelly of football (soccer) fandom, featuring a vast
photographic archive of fans' graffiti and street art captured by a
pioneering 'graffitologist'. At the intersection of the street and
sport we find themes of the day: how racial, ethnic, and class
tensions play out in visual culture. On the fringe of sports
culture are the Ultras, the football fans whose pyrotechnics,
chants, wildly creative stunts, and hooliganism are infamous. Using
selections from his archive containing hundreds of photographs of
Ultras' street art and graffiti, including everything from
elaborate murals to stickers to "scratchitto" incisions and
spray-paint duels, award-winning author Mitja Velikonja introduces
readers to the visual iconography of a fascinating underworld. The
Ultra subculture is built by "no-bodys," the anonymous (primarily)
men whose attachments to their teams, specifically in Europe and
post-socialist states, sometimes cross the lines into nationalist
sentiments and militaristic "Blood and Soil" extremism. After
examining general themes and trends in street art and tifo club
graffiti, Velikonja embarks on a case study of fans from his native
Slovenia and touches on the roles of neighboring football fans in
the Balkan Wars. He continues with an analysis of political and
socially progressive graffiti, local trends and circumstances, as
well as its role in the United States. As he peels back layers of
misinformation and misrepresentation, he cues our understanding of
factional mindsets within histories of political instability,
arguing for dissensus being a critical element to democracies. In
the end, we understand that while always under siege, the
ultra-fans require nothing less than fidelity and devotion, but
precisely to what can be determined - it's anyone's game to call.
In a visual feast, hundreds of vibrant images showcase the work of
South Africa's most influential graffiti artists, which will
entertain and inspire graffiti enthusiasts and art fanatics all
over the world. Selective interviews with major graffiti
personalities reveal their passions and inspirations and cover all
aspects of the movement, creating a true representation of its
evolution. Initially unknown for its graffiti scene, South Africa
has now become a prime destination for many renowned international
graffiti writers. From underground tunnels and abandoned buildings
to train yards and townships, local writers, each with their own
distinct style, spread their work across the nation. Now, for the
first time ever, the global spotlight can fall on these talented
artists.
This book is the most extensive contribution to our understanding of the graffiti subculture to date. Using insights from ethnographic research conducted in London and New York, this book explores the varying ways young men use graffiti to construct masculinity, claim power, and establish independence from the institutions which define, and often limit, them as young people. Forging a link between subcultural practice and identity construction, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in new understandings of youth and their subcultures.
This book explores how copyright laws are perceived within street
art and graffiti subcultures to examine how artists and writers
view certain creative aspects of their own practice. Drawing on
ethnographic research and fieldwork, the book gives voice to the
main actors of these communities and highlights their feelings and
opinions toward issues that are increasingly impacting their
everyday life and work. It also touches on related and
complementary issues, such as the 'gallerisation' or economic
exploitation of these forms of art and the curious similarities
between the graffiti and advertising worlds. Unique and
comprehensive, Copyright on the Street brings the 'voice from the
street' into the debate over the legal and non-legal protection of
street art and graffiti.

A collection of essential quotations and other writings from artist
and icon Jean-Michel Basquiat One of the most important artists of
the late twentieth century, Jean-Michel Basquiat explored the
interplay of words and images throughout his career as a celebrated
painter with an instantly recognizable style. In his paintings,
notebooks, and interviews, he showed himself to be a powerful and
creative writer and speaker as well as image-maker. Basquiat-isms
is a collection of essential quotations from this godfather of
urban culture. In these brief, compelling, and memorable
selections, taken from his interviews as well as his visual and
written works, Basquiat writes and speaks about culture, his
artistic persona, the art world, artistic influence, race, urban
life, and many other subjects. Concise, direct, forceful, poetic,
and enigmatic, Basquiat's words, like his art, continue to
resonate. Select quotations from the book: "I cross out words so
you will see them more; the fact that they are obscured makes you
want to read them." "I think there are a lot of people that are
neglected in art, I don't know if it's because of who made the
paintings or what, but, um . . . black people are never really
portrayed realistically or I mean not even portrayed in modern
art." "Since I was 17, I thought I might be a star." "The more I
paint the more I like everything." "I think I make art for myself,
but ultimately I think I make it for the world."
For many the smoke and mirrors which surround Banksy are as
fascinating as the artwork of the 21st century's most important
living artist. Banksy Myths Volume 2 takes the same approach as Vol
1. We collect the stories, the reader can judge for themselves.
No single living artist has created as many myths, rumors and
legends as Banksy. In his home town of Bristol almost everyone
seems to have a Banksy story. Many of the tales in this book are
from Bristol and some are from further afield. What they share is
that they are all told with the wide-eyed wonder which Banksy
inspires. Compiled between 2009 and 2011, some of these stories are
quite old and have been told so many times they have become the
stuff of legend, while others are more questionable and best
described as myths.
Some are laugh out loud bollocks and some are simply gossip.
You be the judge. These stories illustrate the incredible audacity,
originality and sheer bloody mindedness of Banksy, who obviously
will be best remembered for his art and exposing the hypocrisy and
idiocy of our modern lives. The myths will be viewed as a
distraction to some or part of the appeal for others. One thing is
certain, the art and the myths are both larger than life.
Does street art exist in spotless Tokyo? Yes! But strict vandalism
laws and conservative Japanese culture have suppressed the graffiti
scene in Tokyo. This stunning survey by photographer and graffiti
artist Lord K2 takes you into the Tokyo neighborhoods exhibiting a
colorful array of urban art created on the fly and as low-key as
possible. Here is a look at vibrant stickers, tags, highly
elaborate murals by both local and international artists, and a
gallery of work by the artist network Pow! Wow! Worldwide. The
images are accompanied by well-researched commentary and a history
of Tokyo graffiti, positioning this book as a comprehensive
introduction to the best-kept secrets Tokyo's graffiti scene has to
offer.

Essential quotations from renowned artist and pop icon Keith Haring
Keith Haring remains one of the most important and celebrated
artists of his generation and beyond. Through his signature bold
graphic line drawings of figures and forms dancing and grooving,
Haring's paintings, large-scale public murals, chalk drawings, and
singular graffiti style defined an era and brought awareness to
social issues ranging from gay rights and AIDS to drug abuse
prevention and a woman's right to choose. Haring-isms is a
collection of essential quotations from this creative thinker and
legendary artist. Gathered from Haring's journals and interviews,
these lively quotes reveal his influences and thoughts on a variety
of topics, including birth and death, possibility and uncertainty,
and difference and conformity. They demonstrate Haring's deep
engagement with subjects outside of the art world and his outspoken
commitment to activism. Taken together, this selection reflects
Haring's distinctive voice and reminds us why his work continues to
resonate with fans around the globe. Select quotations from the
book: "Art lives through the imaginations of the people who are
seeing it. Without that contact, there is no art." "It's a huge
world. There are lots and lots and lots of people that I haven't
reached yet that I'd like to reach." "Art is one of the last areas
that is totally within the realm of the human individual and can't
be copied or done better by a machine." "The artist, if he is a
vessel, is also a performer." "No matter how long you work, it's
always going to end sometime. And there's always going to be things
left undone." "I decided to make a major break. New York was the
only place to go." "I came to believe there was no such thing as
chance. If you accept that there are no coincidences, you use
whatever comes along." "There was a migration of artists from all
over America to New York. It was completely wild. And we controlled
it ourselves." "I couldn't go back to the abstract drawings; it had
to have some connection to the real world."
The legend of Jean-Michel Basquiat is as strong as ever. Synonymous
with 1980s New York, the artist first appeared in the late 1970s
under the tag SAMO, spraying caustic comments and fragmented poems
on the walls of the city. He appeared as part of a thriving
underground scene of visual arts and graffiti, hip hop, post-punk,
and DIY filmmaking, which met in a booming art world. As a painter
with a strong personal voice, Basquiat soon broke into the
established milieu, exhibiting in galleries around the world.
Basquiat's expressive style was based on raw figures and integrated
words and phrases. His work is inspired by a pantheon of luminaries
from jazz, boxing, and basketball, with references to arcane
history and the politics of street life-so when asked about his
subject matter, Basquiat answered "royalty, heroism and the
streets." In 1983 he started collaborating with the most famous of
art stars, Andy Warhol, and in 1985 was on the cover of The New
York Times Magazine. When Basquiat died at the age of 27, he had
become one of the most successful artists of his time. First
published in an XXL edition, this unprecedented insight into
Basquiat's art is now available in a compact, accessible volume in
celebration of TASCHEN's 40th anniversary. With pristine
reproductions of his most seminal paintings, drawings, and notebook
sketches, it offers vivid proximity to Basquiat's intricate marks
and scribbled words, further illuminated by an introduction to the
artist from editor Hans Werner Holzwarth, as well as an essay on
his themes and artistic development from curator and art historian
Eleanor Nairne. Richly illustrated year-by-year chapter breaks
follow the artist's life and quote from his own statements and
contemporary reviews to provide both personal background and
historical context. About the series TASCHEN is 40! Since we
started our work as cultural archaeologists in 1980, TASCHEN has
become synonymous with accessible publishing, helping bookworms
around the world curate their own library of art, anthropology, and
aphrodisia at an unbeatable price. Today we celebrate 40 years of

series presents new editions of some of the stars of our
program-now more compact, friendly in price, and still realized
with the same commitment to impeccable production.
This is the illustrated story of New York artist Chris Daze Ellis's

is a journey tracking the seminal moments in Daze's life that
shaped his art. View his aesthetic evolution, from "Graffiti High"
(New York's High School of Art and Design) and an "unsanctioned"
street art phase to exhibitions with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel
Basquiat. Train photos from the 1970s and '80s, a broad
representation of Daze's studio and mural works, and personal
photos guide the reader through an artistic portfolio spanning five
