Subjects in Japanese and English (Paperback): Yoshihisa Kitagawa Subjects in Japanese and English (Paperback)
Yoshihisa Kitagawa
R1,105 Discovery Miles 11 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1994, this volume shows that the structural relation 'government' holds not only between the verbal head and its object but also between the verbal head and its subject at least at the level of Logical Form in both Japanese and English. The book provides an analysis of complex predicate constructions in Japanese, discusses phrase structure in Japanese and English and develops a theory of binding.

Chiharu Uda Kikuta
R1,094 Discovery Miles 10 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1994, this volume analyses complex predicate constructions in Japanese in the framework of Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG). The book presents the theoretical framework as a basis of the following analyses and discusses thematic roles, reflexive binding and case marking. Attention is also given to passive, benefactive and causative constructions.

Interaction of Derivational Morphology and Syntax in Japanese and English (Paperback): Yoko Sugioka Interaction of Derivational Morphology and Syntax in Japanese and English (Paperback)
Yoko Sugioka
R1,094 Discovery Miles 10 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1986, this book discusses how the proper boundary between the lexicon and syntax should be defined and examines various word formation processes in Japanese and English which involve some interaction of morphology and syntax. It also questions the plausibility of the lexicalist hypothesis as a theory of universal grammar. It proposes a rule typology approach to the syntax/lexicon dichotomy and looks at deverbal nominals and compounds in English and Japanese and discusses their similarities and differences. In particular the important role argument structure plays in morphological derivations is analysed.

Language and the Modern State - The Reform of Written Japanese (Paperback): Nanette Gottlieb Language and the Modern State - The Reform of Written Japanese (Paperback)
Nanette Gottlieb
R1,094 Discovery Miles 10 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1991, this book examines the process whereby a modern colloquial style of written Japanese was developed in the context of the overall modernization of Japan. The book examines the process whereby this strategic simplification took place in Japan, beginning with a discussion of the background to the problem and the reasons why change was indicated. The history, characteristics and spheres of the four major styles found in documents of the modern period are examined, as are initial moves towards language reform in the fields of education and printed media. Separate illustrations in Japanese script are provided to give an idea of the changing visual complexity of texts; in-text references, however, are romanized except where the use of characters is essential. Wherever possible, English sources are cited in addition to Japanese; where published translations are available, these are cited in order to enable non-speakers of Japanese to follow up references if they so desire.

Learning the meaning of change-of-state verbs - A case study of German child language (Hardcover, Reprint 2011): Angelika Wittek Learning the meaning of change-of-state verbs - A case study of German child language (Hardcover, Reprint 2011)
Angelika Wittek
R4,378 R3,922 Discovery Miles 39 220 Save R456 (10%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Causative change-of-state verbs like 'to open', 'to fill', and 'to wake' are central to both recent theories of grammatical development and theories of lexical structure. This book focuses on how German-speaking children learn the meaning of change-of-state verbs. It offers a thorough characterization of the acquisition of German, embedded in a crosslinguistic perspective. The author provides a comprehensive review of the acquisition literature on that topic and introduces a new account as to how the meaning of these verbs can be learned. The empirical backbone of the investigation are a set of carefully designed experimental studies.

On the structure of A-bar constructions in Dagbani: Perspectives of "wh"-questions and fragment answers (Hardcover, New... On the structure of A-bar constructions in Dagbani: Perspectives of "wh"-questions and fragment answers (Hardcover, New edition)
Samuel Alhassan Issah
R1,476 Discovery Miles 14 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides an account of the structure of A-bar constructions, focusing on wh-questions and fragment answers in Dagbani, a Mabia (Gur) language spoken in Northern Ghana. It demonstrates that Dagbani wh-phrases occur in two distinct positions, ex-situ and in-situ, except for subject wh-phrases, which only occur in the former position. It provides a theoretical analysis of the distribution of the wh-phrases couched within minimalism (Chomsky 1995). Finally, the book gives an account of the structural correlation between wh-questions and their answers with the focus on the syntactic derivation of fragment answers. The author contends that the derivation of fragment answer involves two processes: A-bar movement together with PF-deletion

Language Patterns in Spanish and Beyond - Structure, Context and Development (Hardcover): Juan J Colomina-Alminana, Sandro... Language Patterns in Spanish and Beyond - Structure, Context and Development (Hardcover)
Juan J Colomina-Alminana, Sandro Sessarego
R4,307 Discovery Miles 43 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The scholarly articles included in this volume represent significant contributions to the fields of formal and descriptive syntax, conversational analysis and speech act theory, as well as language development and bilingualism. Taken together, these studies adopt a variety of methodological techniques-ranging from grammaticality judgments to corpus-based analysis to experimental approaches-to offer rich insights into different aspects of Ibero-Romance grammar. The volume consists of three parts, organized in accordance with the topics treated in the chapters they comprise. Part I focuses on structural patterns, Part II analyzes pragmatic ones, and Part III investigates the acquisition of linguistic aspects found in the speech of L1, L2 and heritage speakers. The authors address these issues by relying on empirically rooted linguistic approaches to data collection, which are coupled with current theoretical assumptions on the nature of sentence structure, discourse dynamics and language acquisition. The volume will be of interest to anyone researching or studying Hispanic and Ibero-Romance linguistics.

The Interactive Stance (Hardcover, New): Jonathan Ginzburg The Interactive Stance (Hardcover, New)
Jonathan Ginzburg
R4,319 R3,624 Discovery Miles 36 240 Save R695 (16%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents one of the first attempts at developing a precise, grammatically rooted, theory of conversation motivated by data from real conversations. The theory has descriptive reach from the micro-conversational -- e.g. self-repair at the word level -- to macro-level phenomena such as multi-party conversation and the characterization of distinct conversational genres. It draws on extensive corpus studies of the British National Corpus, on evidence from language acquisition, and on computer simulations of language evolution. The theory provides accounts of the opening, middle game, and closing stages of conversation. It also offers a new perspective on traditional semantic concerns such as quantification and anaphora. The Interactive Stance challenges orthodox views of grammar by arguing that, unless we wish to exclude from analysis a large body of frequently occurring words and constructions, the right way to construe grammar is as a system that characterizes types of talk in interaction.

Semantic Role Universals and Argument Linking - Theoretical, Typological, and Psycholinguistic Perspectives (Hardcover): Ina... Semantic Role Universals and Argument Linking - Theoretical, Typological, and Psycholinguistic Perspectives (Hardcover)
Ina Bornkessel, Matthias Schlesewsky, Bernard Comrie, Angela D. Friederici
R6,562 Discovery Miles 65 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The concept of semantic roles has been central to linguistic theory for many decades. More specifically, the assumption of such representations as mediators in the correspondence between a linguistic form and its associated meaning has helped to address a number of critical issues related to grammatical phenomena. Furthermore, in addition to featuring in all major theories of grammar, semantic (or 'thematic') roles have been referred to extensively within a wide range of other linguistic subdisciplines, including language typology and psycho-/neurolinguistics. This volume brings together insights from these different perspectives and thereby, for the first time, seeks to build upon the obvious potential for cross-fertilisation between hitherto autonomous approaches to a common theme. To this end, a view on semantic roles is adopted that goes beyond the mere assumption of generalised roles, but also focuses on their hierarchical organisation. The book is thus centred around the interdisciplinary examination of how these hierarchical dependencies subserve argument linking - both in terms of linguistic theory and with respect to real-time language processing - and how they interact with other information types in this process. Furthermore, the contributions examine the interaction between the role hierarchy and the conceptual content of (generalised) semantic roles and investigate their cross-linguistic applicability and psychological reality, as well as their explanatory potential in accounting for phenomena in the domain of language disorders. In bridging the gap between different disciplines, the book provides a valuable overview of current thought on semantic roles and argument linking, and may further serve as a point of departure for future interdisciplinary research in this area. As such, it will be of interest to scientists and advanced students in all domains of linguistics and cognitive science.

Diachrony, Synchrony, and Typology of Tense and Aspect in Old Japanese (Hardcover): Kazuha Watanabe Diachrony, Synchrony, and Typology of Tense and Aspect in Old Japanese (Hardcover)
Kazuha Watanabe
R2,204 Discovery Miles 22 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Diachrony, Synchrony, and Typology of Tense and Aspect in Old Japanese reconstructs the synchronic system of tense and aspect in Old Japanese, which until now has not been examined using the tools of contemporary linguistic theory. Kazuha Watanabe analyzes syntactic distribution of the temporal suffixes in the Man'yoshu, an eighth-century poetry collection, and compares the results with data from well-attested languages. The author then integrates the semantic property of each suffix into the overall synchronic tense-aspect system of Old Japanese. Watanabe further compares the reconstructed system with the distributions of the same suffixes in Early Modern Japanese using Genji Monogatari, an eleventh-century novel, in order to provide further support for the synchronic analysis of Old Japanese. This approach is fundamentally different from traditional analyses, which identify the meanings of the temporal suffixes based on contextual information. In addition, previous analyses have produced a uniform analysis covering the entire 700-year period from Old to Early Modern Japanese. Instead, Watanabe proposes that Old Japanese had a temporal system distinct from the later period.

Topicalization in Asian Englishes - Forms, Functions, and Frequencies of a Fronting Construction (Paperback): Sven Leuckert Topicalization in Asian Englishes - Forms, Functions, and Frequencies of a Fronting Construction (Paperback)
Sven Leuckert
R1,324 Discovery Miles 13 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Shortlisted for the 2020 ESSE Book Award in English Language and Linguistics This monograph is the first comprehensive study of topicalization in Asian second-language varieties of English and provides an in-depth analysis of the forms, functions, and frequencies of topicalization in four Asian Englishes. Topicalization, that is, the sentence-initial placement of constituents other than the subject, has been found to occur frequently in the English spoken by many Asians, but so far the possible reasons for this have never been scrutinized. This book closes this research gap by taking into account the structures of the major contact languages, the roles of second-language acquisition and politeness as well as other factors in order to explain why topicalization is highly frequent in some varieties such as Indian English and much less frequent in other varieties such as Hong Kong English. In addition to exploring major and minor forces involved in explaining the frequency of topicalization, the forms and functions of the feature are assessed. Central questions addressed in this regard are the following: Which syntactic constituents tend to be topicalized the most and the least frequently? Which discourse effects does topicalization achieve? How can we approach topicalization methodologically? And, lastly, which influence do language processing and production have on topicalization?

Nantong Chinese (Hardcover): Benjamin Ao Nantong Chinese (Hardcover)
Benjamin Ao
R4,304 Discovery Miles 43 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nantong Chinese is an in-depth account of an interesting and endangered Sinitic language spoken in Nantong, China, in an area in the Northern Yangtze River Delta about 800 square kilometers in size and 105 kilometers northwest of the city of Shanghai. The Chinese language consists of several hundred local varieties known as Sinitic languages or Chinese dialects, each representing a unique linguistic system. This book offers a comprehensive and systematic insight into one such system that is even more complex and more interesting than standard Mandarin. The unique vocalization and other linguistic features of Nantong Chinese make it unintelligible to most Chinese people. All the important linguistic aspects of Nantong Chinese are covered, including its phonetic, lexical, morphological and syntactic subsystems. Nantong Chinese will be of interest to professionals and students in linguistics worldwide.

Understanding and Measuring Morphological Complexity (Hardcover): Matthew Baerman, Dunstan Brown, Greville G. Corbett Understanding and Measuring Morphological Complexity (Hardcover)
Matthew Baerman, Dunstan Brown, Greville G. Corbett
R3,416 Discovery Miles 34 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book aims to assess the nature of morphological complexity, and the properties that distinguish it from the complexity manifested in other components of language. Of the many ways languages have of being complex, perhaps none is as daunting as what can be achieved by inflectional morphology: this volume examines languages such as Archi, which has a 1,000,000-form verb paradigm, and Chinantec, which has over 100 inflection classes. Alongside this complexity, inflection is notable for its variety across languages: one can take two unrelated languages and discover that they share similar syntax or phonology, but one would be hard pressed to find two unrelated languages with the same inflectional systems. In this volume, senior scholars and junior researchers highlight novel perspectives on conceptualizing morphological complexity, and offer concrete means for measuring, quantifying and analysing it. Examples are drawn from a wide range of languages, including those of North America, New Guinea, Australia, and Asia, alongside a number of European languages. The book will be a valuable resource for all those studying complexity phenomena in morphology, and for theoretical linguists more generally, from graduate level upwards.

Case Absorption and WH-Agreement (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): A. Watanabe Case Absorption and WH-Agreement (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
A. Watanabe
R3,040 Discovery Miles 30 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an extensively revised version of the core part of my 1993 MIT doctoral dissertation, which seeks to provide a Minimalist theory of Case absorption and support it through empirical investigation. The central idea pursued is that impoverishment of phrase structure is responsible for Case absorption and that the right theory of Case checking should derive this property. Although the basic line of research on Case absorption and wh-agreement remains the same, this book incorporates a lot of new results. A principied theory of Case checking and Case absorption has been worked out in Chapter 1. Treatment of participial constructions in Chapter 3 and wh agreement in Chapter 4 is far more systematic and comprehensive. Chapter 2 is also streamlined, together with refinements of the analysis of Romanian. The product, I hope, is a more convincing def ense of the strength of the Mi ni mal ist approach. I would like to thank my thesis committee members Ken Haie, Noam Chomsky, and Howard Lasnik, under whose guidance this project started."

Expressive Morphology in the Languages of South Asia (Hardcover): Jeffrey P. Williams Expressive Morphology in the Languages of South Asia (Hardcover)
Jeffrey P. Williams
R4,293 Discovery Miles 42 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Expressive Morphology in the Languages of South Asia explores the intricacies of the grammars of several of the languages of the South Asian subcontinent. Specifically, the contributors to this volume examine grammatical resources for shaping elaborative, rhyming, and alliterative expressions, conveying the emotions, states, conditions and perceptions of speakers. These forms, often referred to expressives, remain relatively undocumented, until now. It is clear from the evidence on contextualized language use that the grammatically artistic usage of these forms enriches and enlivens both every day and ritualized genres of discourse. The contributors to this volume provide grammatical and sociolinguistic documentation through a typological introduction to the diversity of expressive forms in the languages of South Asia. This book is suitable for students and researchers in South Asian Languages, and language families of the following; Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Iranian, Sino-Tibetan and Austro-Asiatic.
