Off Balance (Paperback): Dominique Moceanu Off Balance (Paperback)
Dominique Moceanu; As told to Teri Williams
R491 R409 Discovery Miles 4 090 Save R82 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this searing and riveting "New York Times" bestseller, Olympic gold medalist Dominique Moceanu reveals the dark underbelly of Olympic gymnastics, the true price of success...and the shocking secret about her past and her family that she only learned years later.
At fourteen years old, Dominique Moceanu was the youngest member of the 1996 US Women's Olympic Gymnastics team, the first and only American women's team to take gold at the Olympics. Her pixyish appearance and ferocious competitive drive quickly earned her the status of media darling. But behind the fame, the flawless floor routines, and the million-dollar smile, her life was a series of challenges and hardships.
"Off Balance "vividly delineates each of the dominating characters who contributed to Moceanu's rise to the top, from her stubborn father and long-suffering mother to her mercurial coach, Bela Karolyi. Here, Moceanu finally shares the haunting stories of competition, her years of hiding injuries and pain out of fear of retribution from her coaches, and how she hit rock bottom after a public battle with her parents.
But medals, murder plots, drugs, and daring escapes aside (all of which figure into Moceanu's incredible journey), the most unique aspect of her life is the family secret that Moceanu discovers, opening a new and unexpected chapter in her adult life. A mysterious letter from a stranger reveals that she has a second sister--born with a physical disability and given away at birth--who has nonetheless followed in Moceanu's footsteps in an astonishing way.
A multilayered memoir that transcends the world of sports, "Off Balance "will touch anyone who has ever dared to dream of a better life.

Gymnastics, a Transatlantic Movement - From Europe to America (Hardcover): Gertrud Pfister Gymnastics, a Transatlantic Movement - From Europe to America (Hardcover)
Gertrud Pfister
R3,991 Discovery Miles 39 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores, analyses, and explains divergent ideologies and practices of gymnastics in selected European nations. It reconstructs the ex- and import processes from Europe to America and determines the processes, interrelationships and transformations of these "transatlantic movements" in their new home country. The book offers a more complete understanding of the role of gymnastics and expressive movements in cultural and ideological transmission over time and identifies the impact of these concepts on American physical education, sports systems and sports cultures.

The main focus of the book lies in the two decades before and after World War I. This concentration on a specific historical epoch allows us to identify parallel, but also different developments of the various forms of gymnastics and of the transfer and implementation processes.

The volume covers the transfer and impact of German Turnen, Czech Sokol and the Delsarte system in North America. In addition, it traces the influences of French gymnastics in South America and describes the tours of the world-renowned Danish gymnastic reformer Nils Bukh in both Americas. A focus will be the "import" of gymnastics, but also on the adaption processes of these different concepts and their integration into the American culture.

This book was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

Nile Wilson is known to many as a Great Britain Gymnast who won a Bronze Medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and who is England's most successful ever gymnast at a Commonwealth Games following his 5 medals in 2018\. Yet, Nile is so much more than just a gymnast. A YouTuber with over a million subscribers, a social media influencer, a successful businessman and entrepeneur, Nile is also an advocate for mental health awareness, and who has been very open about his own personal struggles. Nile Wilson - My Story gives an unprecedented look into Nile's true battle to be fit and ready for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics - throughout the Games and the aftermath. The public perception of Nile Wilson is his humour, openness and how down to earth he is, all of which is true. Due to this perception however, people presume they know everything about him. This book will shatter that perception, and reveal the struggles behind the smiles, from the brutal reality of performing at an elite sporting level, to the mental health battles Nile has had to fight - and continues to fight - every day.

Including global cases and innovative narrative methods, it explores the way gymnasts have experienced its intense challenges, the complexities of the coach-athlete relationship, and how others involved in the sport, such as parents and medical personnel, have contributed to the reproduction of a highly demanding and potentially abusive sporting culture. With the focus on a unique women's sport, the book is an important read for researchers and students studying sport sociology, sport coaching, and physical education, but it is also a valuable resource for anyone interested in the development of sporting talent.

The Theory of Gymnastics (Paperback): J Lindhard The Theory of Gymnastics (Paperback)
J Lindhard
R1,072 Discovery Miles 10 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1939, this volume translated into English the Danish work 'Den Specielle Gymnastrikteon'. Its author, Professor Lindhard, noted the still-young field of theoretical gymnastics in comparison to its physical counterpart, with the only prior major work being that of Ling from 1800. Lindhard developed upon that work to revolutionise the 1930s interpretation of Ling's views. The author of several physiological books, Lindhard sought to explain how gymnastics was a means of developing both physical form and moral qualities. He emphasised the importance of guidance towards ethical and aesthetical gymnastics and explored the differences between men, women and children with regards to each form of exercise. This was achieved through the classification, description and contemplation of exercises such as corrective, balance and athletic exercises along with demonstrative illustrations.

For decades osteopathic physician Larry Nassar built a sterling reputation as the go-to doctor for America's Olympians while treating hundreds of others at his office on Michigan State University's campus. Parents and coaches entrusted their children to Nassar's care-only for him to use that trust to manipulate and sexually abuse hundreds of girls and young women under the guise of medical treatment. In Start by Believing, John Barr and Dan Murphy confront Nassar's acts, as well as the epic institutional failures and individuals who enabled him--failures whose consequences continue to play out in the legal system. It is an account of a corrupted culture with rules and rituals all its own: the dysfunctional and high-pressured world of club level and elite gymnastics, where young girls are trained in atmospheres of fear and intimidation; a world where Larry Nassar was protected by enablers more interested in an institution's image than the well-being of young people. Above all, this book is the story of the women, individuals of uncommon grit and perseverance-including an unlikely pairing of a once-shy Christian mother and an outspoken former Olympic medallist-who bravely spoke out and brought a criminal and his enablers to justice.

He was a longtime doctor at Michigan State University, while also serving as the physician for the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team. Parents left their daughters in his care, grateful for the attention of this renowned doctor. He became a mentor and confidante to aspiring young gymnasts with big dreams. In the wake of abuse revelations, athletes are asking why they weren't protected. Victims want to know why they weren't believed. Parents are questioning why authorities didn't stop him when they had the chance. How did this happen? And how can we prevent it from occurring again? Drawing on exclusive interviews, this book unveils the behind-the-scenes story on the scandal that riveted and devastated the world of elite sports--and the small community where it all began. This is the narrative of how these women found their voice and came together, refusing to let the abuse of their past define their future. Their experience carries an important message for readers amid the ever-growing #MeToo movement: There is power in your voice.
