This book lifts the lid on the high pressured, complex world of
women's artistic gymnastics. By adopting a socio-cultural lens
incorporating historical, sociological and psychological
perspectives, it takes the reader through the story and workings of
women's artistic gymnastics. Beginning with its early history as a
'feminine appropriate' sport, the book follows the sport through
its transition to a modern sports form. Including global cases and
innovative narrative methods, it explores the way gymnasts have
experienced its intense challenges, the complexities of the
coach-athlete relationship, and how others involved in the sport,
such as parents and medical personnel, have contributed to the
reproduction of a highly demanding and potentially abusive sporting
culture. With the focus on a unique women's sport, the book is an
important read for researchers and students studying sport
sociology, sport coaching, and physical education, but it is also a
valuable resource for anyone interested in the development of
sporting talent.
Nile Wilson is known to many as a Great Britain Gymnast who won a
Bronze Medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and who is England's most
successful ever gymnast at a Commonwealth Games following his 5
medals in 2018\. Yet, Nile is so much more than just a gymnast. A
YouTuber with over a million subscribers, a social media
influencer, a successful businessman and entrepeneur, Nile is also
an advocate for mental health awareness, and who has been very open
about his own personal struggles. Nile Wilson - My Story gives an
unprecedented look into Nile's true battle to be fit and ready for
the Tokyo 2020 Olympics - throughout the Games and the aftermath.
The public perception of Nile Wilson is his humour, openness and
how down to earth he is, all of which is true. Due to this
perception however, people presume they know everything about him.
This book will shatter that perception, and reveal the struggles
behind the smiles, from the brutal reality of performing at an
elite sporting level, to the mental health battles Nile has had to
fight - and continues to fight - every day.

decade. The Cheerleading Book is for anyone, be they a newcomer
looking to cheer for the first time, or a dedicated young athlete
who wants to improve his or her craft.

Larry Nassar has been called one of the worst sexual predators in
history. For years, the families in Lansing, Michigan admired and
trusted him. He was a longtime doctor at Michigan State University,
while also serving as the physician for the U.S. Olympic gymnastics
team. Parents left their daughters in his care, grateful for the
attention of this renowned doctor. He became a mentor and
confidante to aspiring young gymnasts with big dreams. In the wake
of abuse revelations, athletes are asking why they weren't
protected. Victims want to know why they weren't believed. Parents
are questioning why authorities didn't stop him when they had the
chance. How did this happen? And how can we prevent it from
occurring again? Drawing on exclusive interviews, this book unveils
the behind-the-scenes story on the scandal that riveted and
devastated the world of elite sports--and the small community where
it all began. This is the narrative of how these women found their

First published in 1939, this volume translated into English the
Danish work 'Den Specielle Gymnastrikteon'. Its author, Professor
Lindhard, noted the still-young field of theoretical gymnastics in
comparison to its physical counterpart, with the only prior major
work being that of Ling from 1800. Lindhard developed upon that
work to revolutionise the 1930s interpretation of Ling's views. The
author of several physiological books, Lindhard sought to explain
how gymnastics was a means of developing both physical form and
moral qualities. He emphasised the importance of guidance towards
ethical and aesthetical gymnastics and explored the differences
between men, women and children with regards to each form of
exercise. This was achieved through the classification, description
and contemplation of exercises such as corrective, balance and
athletic exercises along with demonstrative illustrations.
Want to be a better gymnast? Want the mental skills needed to stay
focused and the physical skills to maximise your success? Then this
is the guide to improving your performance potential. Co-authors
Karen D Cogan, sport psychologist and Peter Vidmar, Olympic Gold
Medalist -- have combined their experience and expertise to create
a teaching guide for aspiring gymnasts of all ages. Many gymnasts
have the physical attributes, but often lack the mental skills
needed for peak performance level. In this book, Olympians Shannon
Miller, Amanda Borden, Jaycie Phelps, Kerri Strug, and Tim Daggett
discuss how they used mental skills to become champions.
In "Letters to a Young Gymnast," Nadia Comaneci tells how she found
the inner strength to become a world-class athlete at such a young
age. Now a woman of tremendous poise and self-assurance, she offers

after you've realized your dream to the necessity of "a spirit
forged with mettle," Comaneci's thoughts on athleticism and
sacrifice are eye-opening.
