Gestational Diabetes - Origins, Complications, and Treatment (Paperback): Clive Petry Gestational Diabetes - Origins, Complications, and Treatment (Paperback)
Clive Petry
R1,847 Discovery Miles 18 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Given the rapid increase in the worldwide incidence of gestational diabetes, the need for defining the risks and effects associated with raised glucose concentrations in pregnancy is great. Recent large studies are helping to define the risks, as well as identify the benefits of reducing glucose intolerance. Written by an esteemed list of international authors, Gestational Diabetes: Origins, Complications, and Treatment presents timely reviews relating to some of the most important aspects of gestational diabetes, specifically its causes, consequences, and treatments. Divided into five sections, the book begins with a section on metabolism in pregnancy and gestational diabetes, dealing with maternal and foetal glucose metabolism and the controversial area of what actually constitutes gestational diabetes. The next section examines risk factors and causes of gestational diabetes, including the obvious but often overlooked factors-being female and pregnant. The text also outlines environmental and genetic risk factors. The third section deals with the potential complications of gestational diabetes for both mother and offspring, considering short-term and long-term effects. The largest section in the book addresses treatments in an effort to improve the outcome for the mother and the baby. Chapters describe the nutritional approach, considered the cornerstone of treating gestational diabetes, as well as evidence for the role of exercise in its treatment and a useful strategy for treating gestational diabetes pharmacologically. The final section discusses future prospects in screening, diagnosis, prevention, pathophysiology, and treatment of gestational diabetes.

Management of Pelvic Organ Prolapse - Current Controversies (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018):... Management of Pelvic Organ Prolapse - Current Controversies (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Vincenzo Li Marzi, Maurizio Serati
R2,638 Discovery Miles 26 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the surgical treatment of pelvic organ prolapse, focusing especially on issues that continue to arouse controversy. In the first section, leading experts present detailed information on the surgical anatomy, pathophysiology, and epidemiology of prolapse and also the impact of concomitant functional disorders. The second section focuses on diagnostic work-up and the third is dedicated to the various treatment options aimed at resolution of the condition. The closing chapters discuss outcome measures and analyze the effects of prolapse surgery on urinary, bowel, and sexual symptoms. In 1966 Richard TeLinde stated that, "Every honest surgeon of extensive and long experience will have to admit that he is not entirely and absolutely satisfied with his long-term results of all his operations for prolapse and allied conditions." Although many uncertainties in the field have since been resolved, some major issues still require clarification. Often it can be difficult to find the right balance between treatment effectiveness in the long term and risk reduction, including with respect to complications. This book will help trainees and less experienced surgeons to make appropriate treatment choices and achieve optimal outcomes.

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss - Causes, Controversies, and Treatment (Hardcover, 3rd edition): Howard Carp Recurrent Pregnancy Loss - Causes, Controversies, and Treatment (Hardcover, 3rd edition)
Howard Carp
R5,102 Discovery Miles 51 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Major advances in genetics, immunology, and endocrinology have necessitated a new edition of this best-selling text. However, despite the advances, recurrent pregnancy loss presents a frustrating clinical problem. There is still disagreement about the number of pregnancy losses which warrant investigation and treatment and about which investigations should be performed. This third edition provides an authoritative and comprehensive update on advances in the understanding and management of this troubling phenomenon, covering both basic scientific topics such as genetics and cytokines, and profiles major advances in immunology, endocrinology, and thrombotic mechanism. Clinical research is discussed, as is assessment of results when applying an evidence-based approach or a more personalised approach, which is now becoming possible due to advances in the diagnosis of cause. There are lively debates on the role of progestogens and immunotherapy, which remain controversial. Designed for specialists working in reproductive medicine clinics and those involved with maternal-fetal care, the book is also ideal for generalists and gynecologists seeking a comprehensive view of developments in the field.

The Fetal and Neonatal Pulmonary Circulations (Hardcover, REV): E Weir The Fetal and Neonatal Pulmonary Circulations (Hardcover, REV)
E Weir
R4,172 Discovery Miles 41 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Birth is a sudden, traumatic transition of environments. Once the placental oxygen supply ceases, the foetus has only minutes to establish pulmonary oxygen transport, which requires not only inflation of the lungs, but also sudden and sustained changes in the lung circulation. Not long ago, research in this field was largely restricted to morphology and physiology. Now the powerful new tools of cellular and molecular biology have begun to
shed light on the physiological processes in the developing lung and its supporting vasculature.

In 22 chapters, three main sections explore lung growth and development, vascular cell growth and differentiation, and the mechanisms of hemodynamic control in the neonate; extensive illustrations give a comprehensive picture of pulmonary circulatory development. Factors controlling vasculogenesis and angiogenesis are described by the scientists who pioneered the field. Similarly, the intracellular signaling cascades that determine proliferation or growth inhibition of fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cells are also presented in an understandable manner. Finally, the role of
substances, such as nitric oxide and endothelin, that control the hemodynamics of the fetal and neonatal circulations are discussed in detail, particularly in relation to the changes occurring at birth.

This book will inform basic scientists as well as the clinician and student, and should be of particular interest to pediatric cardiologists, pulmonary medicine physicians, and vascular biologists.

This book provides a wealth of insights, advances and new perspectives on cell therapy for different types of neonatal ischemic disease, such as Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) and neonatal infarction. These diseases pose serious challenges for neonatologists and neurologists, because the severe sequelae lead to decreasing QOL for patients and their families. Accordingly, new treatments for neonatal ischemic diseases are needed all over the world. The book develops new effective therapies combined with hypothermia therapy, an established treatment for HIE. After reviewing past approaches, it presents cutting-edge topics in cell therapy, one of the most promising candidates for treating neonatal ischemic disease. Cell Therapy for Neonatal Ischemic Disease will offer readers a better understanding of the current state of the art in this field from bench to bedside, and inspire researchers and physicians to further explore this evolving therapy.

Sleep and Women's Health (Hardcover): Zippi Dolev Sleep and Women's Health (Hardcover)
Zippi Dolev
R5,079 Discovery Miles 50 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Why is it that women suffer far more than men from insomnia? What is the connection between the hormonal changes that a woman undergoes during her lifetime, and difficulty in falling asleep? What is the effect of cell phones on sleep? Should women engage in sports before going to sleep? What do women primarily dream about? In which country do people sleep the most? How do depression and anxiety affect sleep? And why is it inadvisable to resort to a "little pill" to provide unworried sleep? This clear and readable book, illustrated with short quotations of poetry and prose about sleep and dreams, provides a glimpse into the wonderful mechanism of sleep, explains how correct treatment of sleep disturbances results from understanding their causes, and shows the right path to a pleasant and satisfying night's sleep; it will be of great interest for all women and clinicians dealing with female patients. In particular, because of the connection between sleep and hormones, problems with sleep have repercussions for women's reproductive life cycle. This pioneering text will therefore be of particular interest to gynecologists working in Reproductive Medicine.

Perinatal Stem Cells - Biology, Manufacturing and Translational Medicine (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Zhong Chao Han, Tsuneo A... Perinatal Stem Cells - Biology, Manufacturing and Translational Medicine (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Zhong Chao Han, Tsuneo A Takahashi, Zhibo Han, Zongjin Li
R2,939 Discovery Miles 29 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to various types of perinatal stem cells. Given their unique regenerative abilities, stem cells offer a promising avenue in the treatment of degenerative diseases or injury. Currently, the limitations of postnatal cell sources and expanding efficiency may limit autologous stem cell therapies. Although embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can be cultured indefinitely ex vivo, and can differentiate into three germ layers, ethical issues, the teratoma formation of ESCs and oncogenic risk of iPSCs are major obstacles to their clinical application. More recently, perinatal stem cells have been isolated from the umbilical cord, Wharton's Jelly, placenta, amniotic membrane and amniotic fluid, which are normally discarded as medical waste. This book, after describing perinatal stem cells in detail, introduces readers to the various types of perinatal stem cells, addressing their characterization, banking, quality control and stability. Importantly, it also reviews the clinical applications of perinatal stem cells to therapy of diseases. Accordingly, it offers a valuable resource for clinicians, researchers and graduate students alike.

Cut It Out - The C-Section Epidemic in America (Paperback): Theresa Morris Cut It Out - The C-Section Epidemic in America (Paperback)
Theresa Morris
R682 Discovery Miles 6 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cut It Out examines the exponential increase in the United States of the most technological form of birth that exists: the cesarean section. While c-section births pose a higher risk of maternal death and medical complications, can have negative future reproductive consequences for the mother, increase the recovery time for mothers after birth, and cost almost twice as much as vaginal deliveries, the 2011 cesarean section rate of 33 percent is one of the highest recorded rates in U.S. history, and an increase of 50 percent over the past decade. Further, once a woman gives birth by c-section, her chances of having a vaginal delivery for future births drops dramatically. This decrease in vaginal births after cesarean sections (VBAC) is even more alarming: one third of hospitals and one half of physicians do not even allow a woman a trial of labor after a c-section, and 90 percent of women will go on to have the c-section surgery again for subsequent pregnancies. Of comparative developed countries, only Brazil and Italy have higher c-section rates; c-sections occur in only 19% of births in France, 17% of births in Japan, and 16% of births in Finland. How did this happen? Theresa Morris challenges most existing explanations of the unprecedented rise in c-section rates, which locate the cause of this trend in physicians practicing defensive medicine, women choosing c-sections for scheduling reasons, or women's poor health and older ages. Morris's explanation of the c-section epidemic is more complicated, taking into account the power and structure of legal, political, medical, and professional organizations; gendered ideas that devalue women; hospital organizational structures and protocols; and professional standards in the medical and insurance communities. She argues that there is a new culture within medicine that avoids risk or unpredictable outcomes and instead embraces planning and conservative choices, all in an effort to have perfect births. Based on 130 in-depth interviews with women who had just given birth, obstetricians, midwives, and labor and delivery nurses, as well as a careful examination of local and national level c-section rates, Cut It Out provides a comprehensive, riveting look at a little-known epidemic that greatly affects the lives, health, and families of each and every woman in America.

Normal and Abnormal Fetal Face Atlas - Ultrasonographic Features (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Jean-Marc Levaillant, Jean-Philippe... Normal and Abnormal Fetal Face Atlas - Ultrasonographic Features (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Jean-Marc Levaillant, Jean-Philippe Bault
R5,670 Discovery Miles 56 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This atlas offers a guide to studying the fetal face by means of ultrasound analysis. It describes key phases in cranial-facial development, allowing the reader to learn the related semiology from its most simple iteration to the most complex one. The overall examination of a newborn's face offers a rich source of information and can guide the general examination. The same applies in the context of fetal ultrasound examination. The analytical study of the fetal face not only makes it possible to screen for anomalies related to the face itself, but also yields valuable insights into the brain, the limbs, and the heart. In addition, it allows ultra-sonographers to unravel the puzzle of fetal dimorphism. Written in a pedagogical style, the book guides walks the reader through the diagnostic reasoning process step by step. The authors are pioneers in this field and teach in various university and master's degree ultrasound programs. Their aim is to share with readers their diagnostic approaches and their knowledge and passion for 2D and 3D ultrasound techniques. Each chapter includes algorithms, biometry curves, and simple guidelines that allow users to go "from sign to syndrome". The first chapter, which focuses on innovative embryology adapted to the needs of ultra-sonographers, was written by Gerard Couly, a maxilla-facial surgeon and the founding father of the specialty>

Fertility Holidays - IVF Tourism and the Reproduction of Whiteness (Paperback): Amy Speier Fertility Holidays - IVF Tourism and the Reproduction of Whiteness (Paperback)
Amy Speier
R678 Discovery Miles 6 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A critical analysis of white, working class North Americans' motivations and experiences when traveling to Central Europe for donor egg IVF Each year, more and more Americans travel out of the country seeking low cost medical treatments abroad, including fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). As the lower middle classes of the United States have been priced out of an expensive privatized "baby business," the Czech Republic has emerged as a central hub of fertility tourism, offering a plentitude of blonde-haired, blue-eyed egg donors at a fraction of the price. Fertility Holidays presents a critical analysis of white, working class North Americans' motivations and experiences when traveling to Central Europe for donor egg IVF. Within this diaspora, patients become consumers, urged on by the representation of a white Europe and an empathetic health care system, which seems nonexistent at home. As the volume traces these American fertility journeys halfway around the world, it uncovers layers of contradiction embedded in global reproductive medicine. Speier reveals the extent to which reproductive travel heightens the hope ingrained in reproductive technologies, especially when the procedures are framed as "holidays." The pitch of combining a vacation with their treatment promises couples a stress-free IVF cycle; yet, in truth, they may become tangled in fraught situations as they endure an emotionally wrought cycle of IVF in a strange place. Offering an intimate, first-hand account of North Americans' journeys to the Czech Republic for IVF, Fertility Holidays exposes reproductive travel as a form of consumption which is motivated by complex layers of desire for white babies, a European vacation, better health care, and technological success.
