Placenta Accreta Spectrum - Basic Science, Diagnosis, Classification and Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023): Sherif A.... Placenta Accreta Spectrum - Basic Science, Diagnosis, Classification and Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Sherif A. Shazly, Ahmed A. Nassr
R4,392 Discovery Miles 43 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS), an obstetric emergency associated with significant maternal morbidity and mortality, has increasingly become a global challenge with the rising trend of cesarean deliveries. This book provides a comprehensive review of basic science-related to PAS, discusses modern practice in diagnosis and classification of PAS disorders, and appraise current recommendations on PAS management in view of recent studies, guidelines, and expert opinions. In the last few years, there have been many new updates to practice guidelines including ACOG, RCOG, and FIGO guidelines in addition to several new studies, some of which were unusually multicenter and of large sample size, that are eligible to make major changes in our PAS practice. In addition, the book aims at providing more comprehensive review of all aspects related to PAS from experts, including topics that are deficient in similar books e.g., vascular anatomy, risk reduction, adjuvant treatments. The book provides a single source that provides academic knowledge for researchers and investigators, and clinical guidance to best practice and recent updates in management of women with PAS.

R2,307 Discovery Miles 23 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This first-of-its-kind textbook marks a revolutionary effort to reform medical education nationally by providing a comprehensive, high-quality resource to serve as a foundation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) health education across multiple disciplines. Addressing the decades-long unequal weight of medical education generally offered about the care of LGBTQ people, The Equal Curriculum was created to advance clinicians' competencies in optimizing the health of LGBTQ people. This textbook is designed to be integrated into health sciences curricula and offers pointed strategies to evaluate the integration of LGBTQ health topics. Starting with a brief overview, chapters 1 through 4 cover general content that is highly relevant to all health professionals working with LGBTQ people. Chapters 5 through 12 focus on specific patient populations and clinical specialties, and chapters 13 and 14 cover special topics. Key points in each chapter are highlighted to aid in the comprehension, and case vignettes are provided throughout the textbook, allowing learners to apply the content to clinical scenarios in order to evaluate how the application of relevant knowledge may impact health outcomes. Questions similar to National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) style are provided in most chapters to assist in the application of content. As major addition to the clinical literature, The Equal Curriculum: Student and Educator Guide to LGBTQ Health should be of great interest to health sciences instructors, medical students in their preclinical and clinical phases, and trainees from other disciplines, such as physician assistants, nurses, social workers, and public health professionals.

Kirstie Coxon, Mandie Scamell, Andy Alaszewski
R3,913 Discovery Miles 39 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the last hundred years, pregnancy and childbirth has become increasingly safe - yet it is still a site of risk, and a contested ground on which health professionals and pregnant women both face high costs of error. In this context, all those involved in managing pregnancy and birth are expected to identify and mitigate risk: pregnant women are subject to increasing surveillance to ensure the safety of the unborn foetus, and every aspect of childbearing is increasingly medicalised. This publication brings together fascinating social science research to explore the ways in which risk is both created and managed in pregnancy and childbirth. The introductory chapters reflect on the changing social context of childbirth, in particular the medicalisation of both pregnancy and childbirth with development of specialist practitioners, such as obstetricians and midwives who claim to have the knowledge, technology and skills to identify and manage the risks involved. The next three chapters that examine the ways in which women's behaviour during pregnancy is constructed as potentially risky -- for example smoking, drinking alcohol and taking drugs, and how these risks are monitored and mitigated. The final two parts of the book address the construction of and responses to both medicalisation and risk in childbirth. Altogether, it represents a valuable insight into the complex world of pregnancy, childbirth and risk. This book brings together editorials and articles originally published in special and open issues of Health, Risk and Society.

Consent Issues and Complications in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Paperback): P. Sinha Consent Issues and Complications in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Paperback)
P. Sinha
R1,031 Discovery Miles 10 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent years a lot of emphasis has been placed on obtaining consent for surgical and medical procedures to avoid litigation. This has become an integral part of clinical risk management and clinical governance. Problems relating to consent are the reason for a great proportion of medico-legal claims. Adequate, informed consent and better record keeping will avoid a lot of complaints and litigation. This book aims to help to understand the types of consent , how to obtain consent, and its medico-legal implications when things go wrong. It is designed to help in obtaining consent for common procedures undertaken in obstetrics and gynaecology. It is intended not only for doctors, but also for midwives, nursing staff, medical students and allied health professionals. And it is also particularly relevant for overseas doctors who are new and generally less familiar with the risk management, clinical governance and litigation system in the UK. Another use of this book is to provide an invaluable on the spot reference for various operations and their complications, ways and means of minimising risk, and dealing with difficult situations. The speciality of obstetrics and gynaecology is sued more frequently than any other. This book should help all those who are involved in the ob/gyn department to minimise the risk and danger of incurring such action.

Hysterectomy - Exploring Your Options (Paperback): Edward E Wallach, Esther Eisenberg Hysterectomy - Exploring Your Options (Paperback)
Edward E Wallach, Esther Eisenberg
R373 Discovery Miles 3 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Hysterectomy is the second most common major surgical procedure performed on women in the United States. Because of new nonsurgical treatments and the rising opposition to the procedure from women's and patients' groups, hysterectomies are performed less frequently than in the past, but many disorders of the uterus--fibroid tumors, uterine and cervical cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, adenomyosis, and uterine prolapse--still may require surgical treatment. For some women, the decision to have a hysterectomy is an easy one; for others, it is a difficult choice associated with concerns about risks, discomfort, and female identity.

In "Hysterectomy: Exploring Your Options," experienced gynecologists Edward Wallach and Esther Eisenberg provide complete and up-to-date information about every aspect of the procedure. Written with compassion for all women, this indispensable guide explains the anatomy of the uterus, describes the symptoms of gynecological disorders that may require hysterectomy, discusses the full range of diagnostic tests and treatments, provides details of the surgery itself and postoperative recovery, includes details about other approaches to treatment, and examines long-term consequences involving sexual and reproductive issues as well as hormone replacement therapy. Also included is useful advice about how to talk with your doctor and case studies illustrating the real-life experiences of a variety of women.

In "Hysterectomy: Exploring Your Options," women will find the information they need to work with their physicians to make informed decisions about their health care.

Sectional anatomy is a valuable resource for understanding and interpreting imaging exams, specially computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Thus, health professionals should have a solid anatomical knowledge to properly evaluate such exams during clinical assessments of cardiac, thoracic, abdominal, proctologic, gynecological and urological diseases. The chapters in this book describe the thoracic anatomy, the abdominal wall, retroperitoneal space, and the male and female pelvis. Sectional images of cadaveric material illustrate the thoracic and the abdominal cavities, kidney, ureter, prostate, penis and other male and female organs. The images and descriptions build familiarity with the anatomical traits and can be applied in the fields of urology, gynecology, proctology, radiology and surgery. This work appeals to a wide range of readers, from health professionals to residents and students of different medical specialties.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Tudor and Stuart England (Paperback): Audrey Eccles Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Tudor and Stuart England (Paperback)
Audrey Eccles
R1,021 Discovery Miles 10 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1982 Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Tudor and Stuart England traces the development of obstetrics and gynaecology over the past two centuries. Between the 16th and 18th century midwifery passed from a female mystery, employing traditional medicines and superstitions, to a scientifically-based clinical skill, with both gains and losses to the patient. The case-mortality was high enough to make the increasing involvement of male surgeons socially acceptable, despite sexual taboos. Thus, as scientific knowledge of anatomy and physiology developed and was applied in the form of new techniques, so the midwives, who had less opportunity and inclination to acquire the new knowledge and skills, lost esteem and by the mid-eighteenth century were increasingly relegated to the service of the poor. The book also examines ideas about sexuality, menstruation, conception, pregnancy and lactation and shows how the views of society about femaleness, marital relations and the management of pregnancy and childbearing were influenced by these notions.
