The third edition remains connected to the previous editions in
being concise, well-illustrated, and conceptual. In the third
edition, recent advances have been incorporated wherever required.
This edition uses the classification, nomenclature, and diagnostic
approach to malignant hematologic diseases as per the recent
updated and revised World Health Organization Classification of
Tumors of Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues published in 2017. The
scope of the book encompasses students of MBBS, postgraduates in
pathology and medicine, and students of medical laboratory
technology. The third edition presents: A simplified and concise
text of blood disorders. Covers commonly encountered hematologic
disorders and basics of blood transfusion in a concise manner.
Incorporates most recent advances in the field. Described the
classification, nomenclature, and diagnostic approach to malignant
hematologic diseases as per the recent updated and revised World
Health Organization Classification of Tumors of Hematopoietic and
Lymphoid Tissues published in 2017. Information boxes included for
last minute revision. Numerous illustrations, tables, and
algorithms for rapid and ease of understanding. Essential
appendices incorporated for quick reference.
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
This is the 13th edition of a book written for students and
specialists who are interested in developing a fundamental
understanding of pathology and treatment of hematologic diseases.
The amount of knowledge required by hematologists to identify the
best course of treatment for a patient in this field is changing
rapidly and has fueled an explosion of new drugs that target
pathways virtually unknown a decade ago. We are now also entering
an era of effective immunotherapy for a variety of hematologic
malignancies, but the long term outcomes and toxicities of these
treatment approaches are still unknown. This first edition in
English is a significant novelty in the history of this work. Its
underlying goals, however, remain the same of the first Italian
edition: to help students and specialists understand the basis,
treatment and management of hematologic diseases.

Powerfully involving narrative and incisive detail, clarity and inherent drama: Blood offers in abundance the qualities that define the best popular science writing. Here is the sweeping story of a substance that has been feared, revered, mythologized, and used in magic and medicine from earliest times--a substance that has become the center of a huge, secretive, and often dangerous worldwide commerce. Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, Blood was described by judges as "a gripping page-turner, a significant contribution to the history of medicine and technology and a cautionary tale. Meticulously reported and exhaustively documented."
This publication primarily focuses on the macro- and
micro-rheological behavior of blood and its formed elements, on
interactions between the formed elements and blood vessel walls,
and on the microvascular aspects of hemodynamics. Since many
aspects of hemorheology and hemodynamics are affected by disease or
clinical states, these effects are discussed here, such as
hyperviscosity syndromes, therapy for disturbed blood rheology, and
methods in hemorheology and hemodynamics. Sections of the handbook
include History of Hemorheology; Hemorheology, covering basic
aspects, blood composition, blood rheology, cell mechanics,
pathophysiology, methods and comparative studies; Hemodynamics,
covering basic principles, microcirculation, in vivo effects,
endothelium and methods; and clinical aspects of Hemorheology,
covering hyperviscosity, clinical significance and treatment. The
goal is to foster greater interchange between workers in the field
so as to promote collaborative efforts and, hopefully, improved
health. In selecting topics for this handbook the editors have
attempted to provide a general overview of both basic science and
clinical hemorheology and hemodynamics. Hemorheology and
hemodynamics are closely related, the former dealing with all
aspects of the flow and interactions of the individual blood cells
mostly dealing with all aspects of the flow and interactions of the
individual blood cells mostly studied in vitro, the latter with the
in vivo relationships among vessel architecture, driving pressure,
flow rate and shear stress. The linkage between the in vitro and in
vivo research described in the book will be of interest to both
basic science and clinical investigators.
Childhood acute leukemias are one of the main causes of death in
children aged 1 to 14 years in some countries; and unfortunately,
we have been unable to prevent it. Certainly, a good parcel of it
is due to the poor understanding about its etiology. This book aims
to describe the most important theories and hypothesis regarding
childhood acute leukemia. Written by the most outstanding
researchers in the field, this book intends to contribute to a
greater understanding of the etiology of this disease. It goes
beyond the simple and common analysis of risk factors, which hardly
allows us to draw definite conclusions. By addressing the etiology
of the disease, discussing from molecular biology until
epidemiology and clinical manifestations, this book will guide
present and future approaches, contributing for a better clinical
management of leukemia in children. The knowledge regarding
etiology is a crucial step for a better evaluation, prevention and
treatment of a disease. Thus, this book finally intends to provide
such knowledge, allowing physicians and practitioners to a better
manage of childhood acute leukemias.
