Corpus-Based Studies on Non-Finite Complements in Recent English (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Paul Rickman, Juhani Rudanko Corpus-Based Studies on Non-Finite Complements in Recent English (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Paul Rickman, Juhani Rudanko
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book showcases fresh research into the underexplored territory of complementation through a detailed analysis of gerunds and 'to' infinitives involving control in English. Drawing on large electronic corpora of recent English, it examines subject control in adjectival predicate constructions with 'scared', 'terrified' and 'afraid', moving on to a study of object control with the verbal predicate 'warn'. In each chapter a case study is presented of a matrix adjective that selects both infinitival and gerundial complements, and a central theme is the application of the Choice Principle as a novel factor bearing on complement selection. The authors argue that it is helpful to view the patterns in question as constructions, as combinations of form and meaning, within the system of English predicate complementation, and convincingly demonstrate how a new gerundial pattern has emerged and spread in the course of the last two centuries. This book will appeal to scholars of semantics, corpus linguistics, and historical linguistics as well as those with an interest in variation and change in recent English more generally.

Beyond Borrowing - Lexical Interaction between Englishes and Asian Languages (Hardcover): Hyejeong Ahn, Jieun Kiaer, Danica... Beyond Borrowing - Lexical Interaction between Englishes and Asian Languages (Hardcover)
Hyejeong Ahn, Jieun Kiaer, Danica Salazar, Anna Bordilovskaya
R4,006 Discovery Miles 40 060 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In their book, the authors describe the usage of and attitudes towards English in Asia since the 19th century, as well as the creative and dynamic ways in which Asians of the 21st century continually reinvent the lexicon of English, and the lexicons of their native tongues. The current biggest source of loanwords for many of the world's languages is English, the once obscure Germanic language that has risen to the role of a global lingua franca. However, the overwhelming influence of English is far from being entirely one-sided, at least from a lexical perspective. Many have decried the way that English has "invaded" the vocabularies of their languages, without realising that the English word stock is to some extent also being invaded by these languages. This book explores the phenomenon of word exchange by examining its occurrence between English and some of the major languages spoken in Asia-highly multi-ethnic, multicultural, and multilingual region where English is the predominant medium of international and intraregional communication. Students and researchers from various linguistic areas such as world Englishes, applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, lexicology, and contact linguistics will find this book appealing.

Martina Steber
R4,001 Discovery Miles 40 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

National and transnational debates in Britain and Germany surrounding the meaning of the word "conservative" continue to have far-reaching political consequences. After 1945, even while the term was an accepted part of the political vocabulary of Great Britain, in the Federal Republic of Germany their young democracy was conflicted due to anti-democratic instability. The Guardians of Concepts analyzes the historical changes in the political languages of conservatism in the United Kingdom and the Federal Republic of Germany between 1945 and the early 1980s which plagued intellectuals, politicians, and entire parties. As one of the most difficult concepts in both the political and historiographical vocabulary of the German language, conservatism's analysis takes a linguistically focused path through comprehensive and transnational connection of intellectual history with the history of politics, which are subjects that are otherwise commonly addressed separately from each other.

The Routledge Handbook of Language and Emotion (Paperback): Sonya Pritzker, Janina Fenigsen, James Wilce The Routledge Handbook of Language and Emotion (Paperback)
Sonya Pritzker, Janina Fenigsen, James Wilce
R1,498 Discovery Miles 14 980 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Routledge Handbook of Language and Emotion offers a variety of critical theoretical and methodological perspectives that interrogate the ways in which ideas about and experiences of emotion are shaped by linguistic encounters, and vice versa. Taking an interdisciplinary approach which incorporates disciplines such as linguistic anthropology, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, psychology, communication studies, education, sociology, folklore, religious studies, and literature, this book: explores and illustrates the relationship between language and emotion in the five key areas of language socialisation; culture, translation and transformation; poetry, pragmatics and power; the affective body-self; and emotion communities; situates our present-day thinking about language and emotion by providing a historical and cultural overview of distinctions and moral values that have traditionally dominated Western thought relating to emotions and their management; provides a unique insight into the multiple ways in which language incites emotion, and vice versa, especially in the context of culture. With contributions from an international range of leading and emerging scholars in their fields, The Routledge Handbook of Language and Emotion is an indispensable resource for students and researchers who are interested in incorporating interdisciplinary perspectives on language and emotion into their work.

Mind Design and Minimal Syntax (Hardcover): Wolfram Hinzen Mind Design and Minimal Syntax (Hardcover)
Wolfram Hinzen
R875 Discovery Miles 8 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book introduces generative grammar as an area of study and asks what it tells us about the human mind. Wolfram Hinzen lays the foundation for the unification of modern generative linguistics with the philosophies of mind and language. He introduces Chomsky's program of a "minimalist"
syntax as a novel explanatory vision of the human mind. He explains how the Minimalist Program originated in work in cognitive science, biology, linguistics, and philosophy, and examines its implications for work in these fields. He considers the way the human mind is designed when seen as an
arrangement of structural patterns in nature, and argues that its design is the product not so much of adaptive evolutionary history as of principles and processes that are ahistorical and internalist in character. Linguistic meaning, he suggests, arises in the mind as a consequence of structures
emerging on formal rather than functional grounds. From this he substantiates an unexpected and deeply unfashionable notion of human nature.
Clearly written in nontechnical language and assuming a limited knowledge of the fields it examines and links, Minimal Mind Design will appeal to a wide range of scholars in linguistics, philosophy, and cognitive science. It also provides an exceptionally clear insight into the nature and aims of
Chomsky's Minimalist Program.

Sicilian Elements in Andrea Camilleri's Narrative Language - A Linguistic Analysis (Hardcover): Cinzia Russi Sicilian Elements in Andrea Camilleri's Narrative Language - A Linguistic Analysis (Hardcover)
Cinzia Russi
R3,022 Discovery Miles 30 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Sicilian Elements in Andrea Camilleri's Narrative Language examines Camilleri's unique linguistic repertoire and techniques over his career as a novelist examines the intensification of Sicilian linguistic features in Camilleri's narrative works focusing on features pertaining to the domains of sounds and grammar since these have been marginalized in linguistic-centered research on the evolution of Camilleri's narrative language and remain overall understudied. Through a systematic comparative analysis of the distribution patterns of selected Sicilian features in a selection of Camilleri's historical novels and novels of the Montalbano series, the author identifies the individual features that have become most widespread and the lexical items that are targeted with highest frequency and consistency. The results of the analysis show that in the earlier novels Sicilian features are rather sparse and can be attributed linguistic situational functionality; that is, they function as indices of salient, distinctive aspects of topics, settings, events/situations and characters. Conversely, in the latest novels Sicilian elements pervade the entire novels and the texts are written almost entirely in Camilleri's own Sicilian, "vigatese", so that Sicilian is stripped of any linguistic situational functionality.

Northern English - A Social and Cultural History (Hardcover): Katie Wales Northern English - A Social and Cultural History (Hardcover)
Katie Wales
R3,108 Discovery Miles 31 080 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

English as spoken in the north of England has a rich social and cultural history; however it has often been neglected by historical linguists, whose research has focused largely on the development of 'Standard English'. In this groundbreaking, alternative account of the history of English, Northern English takes centre stage for the first time. Emphasising its richness and variety, the book places northern speech and culture in the context of identity, iconography, mental maps, boundaries and marginalisation. It reassesses the role of Northern English in the development of Modern Standard English, draws some pioneering conclusions about the future of Northern English, and considers the origins of the many images and stereotypes surrounding northerners and their speech. Numerous maps, and a useful index of northern English words and pronunciations, are included. Innovative and original, Northern English will be welcomed by all those interested in the history and regional diversity of English.

Primatology, Ethics and Trauma - The Oklahoma Chimpanzee Studies (Hardcover): Robert Ingersoll, Antonina Anna Scarna Primatology, Ethics and Trauma - The Oklahoma Chimpanzee Studies (Hardcover)
Robert Ingersoll, Antonina Anna Scarna
R2,807 Discovery Miles 28 070 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Primatology, Ethics and Trauma offers an analytical re-examination of the research conducted into the linguistic abilities of the Oklahoma chimpanzees, uncovering the historical reality of the research. It has been 50 years since the first language experiments on chimpanzees. Robert Ingersoll was one of the researchers from 1975 to 1983. He is well known for being one of the main carers and best friend of the chimpanzee, Nim Chimpsky, but there were other chimpanzees in the University of Oklahoma's Institute for Primate Studies, including Washoe, Moja, Kelly, Booee, and Onan, who were taught sign language in the quest to discover whether language is learned or innate in humans. Antonina Anna Scarna's expertise in language acquisition and neuroscience offers a vehicle for critical evaluation of those studies. Ingersoll and Scarna investigate how this research failed to address the emotional needs of the animals. Research into trauma has made scientific advances since those studies. It is time to consider the research from a different perspective, examining the neglect and cruelty that was inflicted on those animals in the name of psychological science. This book re-examines those cases, addressing directly the suffering and traumatic experiences endured by the captive chimpanzees, in particular the female chimpanzee, Washoe, and her resultant inability to be a competent mother. The book discusses the unethical nature of the studies in the context of recent research on trauma and offers a specific and direct psychological message, proposing to finally close the door on the language side of these chimpanzee studies. This book is a novel and groundbreaking account. It will be of interest to lay readers and academics alike. Those working as research, experimental, and clinical psychologists will find this book of interest, as will psychotherapists, linguists, anthropologists, historians of science and primatologists, as well as those involved in primate sanctuary and conservation.

Questions of Syntax (Hardcover): Richard S. Kayne Questions of Syntax (Hardcover)
Richard S. Kayne
R2,880 Discovery Miles 28 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

There are far more syntactically distinct languages than we might have thought; yet there are far fewer than there might have been. Questions of Syntax collects sixteen papers authored by Richard S. Kayne, a preeminent theoretical syntactician, who has sought over the course of his career to understand why both these facts are true. With a particular emphasis on comparative syntax, these chapters collectively consider how wide a range of questions the field of syntax can reasonably attempt to ask and then answer. At issue, among other topics, are the relation between syntax and (certain aspects of) semantics, the relation between syntax and what appear to be lexical questions, the relation between syntax and morphology, the relation between syntax and certain aspects of phonology (insofar as silent elements and their properties play a substantial role), and the extent to which comparative syntax can provide new and decisive evidence bearing on these different kinds of questions. To Kayne, comparative syntax can shed light on what may initially seem lexical questions, and antisymmetry on the evolution of human language itself. Taken as a whole, these essays elucidate the theoretical contributions of one the most influential scholars in linguistics.

Korean Englishes in Transnational Contexts (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Christopher J. Jenks, Jerry Won Lee Korean Englishes in Transnational Contexts (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Christopher J. Jenks, Jerry Won Lee
R3,853 Discovery Miles 38 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book challenges the dominant tendency in world Englishes scholarship to rely on the 'nation' as a static spatial entity and reliable analytic category. Using the transnational Korean context as a case in point, the authors analyse how the practices and ideologies of the English language reflect the complex and unexpected flows of globalisation. Examining topics such as the spoken English of South Korean youth and English education in North Korea, this interdisciplinary work gathers both established and emerging scholars from a range of language-related fields to evaluate English as a dynamic and evolving language beyond purely 'English-speaking' countries. This edited collection will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of world Englishes, multilingualism, second language acquisition and globalisation.
