Acquiring knowledge about different aspects of entomology is of
vital importance in adopting appropriate measures for the control
of pests and also for utilizing the beneficial insects for the
benefits of man. This book deals with the basic concepts of
entomology, which include: - Morphology, anatomy, adaptation and
classification of insects, especially the parasitic ones, which do
harm to plants, livestock and even to man. Economic role of insects
with special reference to productive ones such as, honeybee, silk
worm and lac insect as well as beneficial ones such as,
parasitoids, predators pollinators etc. Pest management that covers
usage of various plant protection chemicals, plant protection
equipments, toxicology of pesticides, compatibility of pesticides
etc. Non-insect pests viz., nematodes and mites, their economic
role and control measures. The text is substantiated with many
fine, hand-drawn figures and illustrations that will help better
understanding of the text. The book, which is primarily intended
for the undergraduate students of agriculture, will be of use to
the postgraduate students of agriculture, to the officials working
in the department of agriculture, especially those involved in
plant protection work and also to the elite public who are
interested in scientific agriculture.
The first few s introduces the reader to the crop, its origin and
distribution, varieties cultivated throughout the country and their
characteristics. Later the trade of banana, both international and
domestic, is explained along with the ways the fruit is consumed in
different parts of the world. A exclusively deals with the
nutritive and therapeutic values of banana followed by the post
harvest aspects at length in seven s with all the latest scientific
developments. The last three s explain about the processing and
value addition including the waste/by-products utilization. The
readers will find it comprehensive with all the information
relevant to post harvest aspects of bananas and plantains.
Fruit Breeding is an art and science demanding prolonged time,
space and intrinsic qualities. Seed propagation leads to
heterogeneity and asexual propagation of elite clones' leads to
newer and novel types. There are temperate, sub-tropical and
tropical fruits differing in photo and thermo periodic
requirements. There are also parthenocarpic and apomictic fruit
trees demanding special breeding methods for improvement. Aroma,
taste and flavor are unique to fruits unlike other horticultural
crops like vegetables, spices, plantation crops and tubers. The
book unravels history of fruit breeding, biodiversity, challenges
approaches and prospects, apomixes, mutation breeding, role of
insects in fruit production, molecular markers, statistical
techniques, rootstock breeding, breeding of mango, citrus, banana,
papaya, guava, sapota, jackfruit, sugarapple/sweetsop Indian jujube
and jamun. The 20 s in the book authored by 15 scientists from six
Research Institutes and Universities expose readers to a new world
of fruit breeding, very seldom ventured by breeders.
The book has been written as Text Book for Undergraduate as well as
Post Graduate students covering major aspect of horticultural
diseases.
Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L. f. Anacardiaceae) is very
important and dollar earning plantation crop. A systematic
compilation on various aspects has been covered in this book. It
consists the s viz. Introduction; History, origin and geographical
distribution; Area, production, productivity, export and import;
Soil and climate; Biodiversity and crop improvement; Varieties;
Propagation and production of planting material; Morphology and
tree characters; Pollination techniques; Establishments of cashew
orchard; Mineral nutrition; Training and pruning; Rejuvenation of
old orchards; Inter-cropping and cover cropping; Intercultural
operation; Maturity, harvesting and yield; Post harvest storage;
Marketing of raw nuts; Nutritive value of cashew; Cashew nut
processing; Cashew apple processing; Pests and diseases; Economics
for cashew cultivation; Future strategies along with references.
This book will be helpful to students and teachers of horticulture,
agriculture and forestry, scientists, researchers, cashew growers
and processors including small scale processing unit holders.
This Laboratory Manual has been designed for students for easy
understanding of basic plant pathological laboratory techniques
related with Isolation of pathogen. Preservation of disease sample,
Demonstration of Koch.s postutlates. Study of different groups of
fungicides and antibiotics. Preparation of fungicides. Methods of
application of fungicides. Bio-assay of fungicides, Bio control of
plant pathogens and Identification of some important fungal
pathogens. The book is fully colour book with digitized images have
been made to identify diseases and pathogens with explanations of
new terminologies to enhance students understanding about the
subject. The book will be useful to beginners, students,
instructors, scientists and research workers in the field of Plant
Pathology and Agricultural Microbiology.
The book would serve to sensitize the planners and policy makers as
well as the local agricultural development officials to explore and
implement region-specific strategy for enhancing pulses production
by incorporating these in the prevailing farming systems by
harnessing the available technological potential. Moreover, various
technological options and strategies presented in this book would
also be useful for all the stakeholders to realize the target of
pulses production in near future.
This book is designed to acquire concepts and techniques for the
sustainable development and management technology for plant
production, development and conservation. The book is six s that
includes introduction, techniques in the creation and management of
tree nursery, plant propagation [plant reproduction], management in
the nursery, production of plants in the nursery and the
agroforestry tree domestication technology to technicians and
farmers interested or practicing Agroforestry and applied
silviculture.
Unlike other aspects of agricultural sciences, little literature is
available on protected cultivation in India. Protected cultivation
in India has vast potential under changing environmental parameters
and reducing land and water resources. The book contains
consolidated and concise information on design, construction and
maintenance of protected structures and production technologies
under protected cultivation with contributions from eminent
scientists and researchers from institute like DIHAR- DRDO, ICAR,
CIAE, CIPHET, CPCT, IIVR, CAZRI, NRCs and various SAUs.
