Volume II of The Watch Book follows on the successful and
comprehensive earlier volume with a magnificently illustrated book
about the additional functions and refinements of wristwatches. For
centuries, so-called "complications" - any feature of a mechanical
timepiece beyond the display of hours, minutes and seconds - have
embodied the crowning glory of fine mechanical watchmaking. Among
the earliest of these are alarm clocks and calendar movements. Moon
phase displays have also been known for several centuries. Striking
movements can be considered among the most complex and technically
elaborate additional functions, while finishing techniques such as
skeletonising, which is mainly done by hand, also characterise the
high art of watchmaking. This superbly illustrated volume by watch
expert and historian Gisbert L. Brunner is dedicated to advanced
functions of mechanical timepieces, their historical development
and special technical features. Topics covered in this book
include: Hands and numerals; Spring; Astronomical display (moon
phases etc.); Tides; Double balance; Alarm clock; Altitude/depth
measurement; Skeletonisation. Text in English and German.
Learn to design simple, powerful, and timeless logos. When you
think of a brand, often the first thing that comes to mind is the
logo, the visual representation of that product, place, thing, or
business. The power of simplicity for these marks can never be
underestimated-a logo that comprises simple shapes can communicate
a stronger message than a complex one, leaving a lasting impression
in a viewer's mind. In Principles of Logo Design, noted logo
designer George Bokhua shares his process for creating logotypes
that will stand the test of time. Applying the enduring principles
of classic texts on grid systems by Josef Muller-Brockmann and on
form and design by Wucius Wong, Bokhua elaborates on his popular
online classes, demonstrating in detail how to maximize
communicationwith minimal information to create logos using,
simple, monochromatic shapes. This comprehensive volume includes:
How to apply a strong, simple, and minimal design aesthetic to logo
design Why gridding is important, and understanding the golden
ratio and when to use it How to sketch and refine logos through
tracing, then grid and execute a mark in Adobe Illustrator
Fine-tuning techniques to ensure visual integrity Knowing how to
design a great logo is a core skill for any graphic designer.
Principles of Logo Design helps designers at all levels of skill
and experience conceive, develop, and create logos that are not
only pleasing to the eye but evoke a sense of perfection.

Why are civil authorities in so-called liberal democracies
affronted by public nudity and the Islamic full-face 'veil'? Why is
law and civil order so closely associated with robes, gowns, suits,
wigs and uniforms? Why is law so concerned with the 'evident' and
the need for justice to be 'seen' to be done? Why do we dress and
obey dress codes at all? In this, the first ever study devoted to
the many deep cultural connections between dress and law, the
author addresses these questions and more. His responses flow from
the radical thesis that 'law is dress and dress is law'. Engaging
with sources from The Epic of Gilgamesh to Shakespeare, Carlyle,
Dickens and Damien Hirst, Professor Watt draws a revealing history
of dress and civil order and offers challenging conclusions about
the nature of truth and the potential for individuals to fit within
the forms of civil life.
Along with Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman, the Joker stands out
as one of the most recognizable comics characters in popular
culture. While there has been a great deal of scholarly attention
on superheroes, very little has been done to understand
supervillains. This is the first academic work to provide a
comprehensive study of this villain, illustrating why the Joker
appears so relevant to audiences today. Batman's foe has cropped up
in thousands of comics, numerous animated series, and three major
blockbuster feature films since 1966. Actually, the Joker debuted
in DC comics Batman 1 (1940) as the typical gangster, but the
character evolved steadily into one of the most ominous in the
history of sequential art. Batman and the Joker almost seemed to
define each other as opposites, hero and nemesis, in a kind of
psychological duality. Scholars from a wide array of disciplines
look at the Joker through the lens of feature films, video games,
comics, politics, magic and mysticism, psychology, animation,
television, performance studies, and philosophy. As the first
volume that examines the Joker as complex cultural and cross-media
phenomenon, this collection adds to our understanding of the role
comic book and cinematic villains play in the world and the ways
various media affect their interpretation. Connecting the Clown
Prince of Crime to bodies of thought as divergent as Karl Marx and
Friedrich Nietzsche, contributors demonstrate the frightening ways
in which we get the monsters we need.

Few have heard of the Shakespeare Head Press, although it ranks
alongside William Morris’s Kelmscott, Emery Walker and
Cobden-Sanderson’s Doves, Eric Gill’s Golden Cockerel and St
John Hornby’s Ashendene. Its origins date to the 1860s, when a
young Arthur Henry Bullen, dreamt of printing the whole of
Shakespeare. Making his dream a reality, Bullen founded the
Shakespeare Head Press in 1904 in an old Tudor house, where
Shakespeare would have been a guest. There are many backstories
associated with the Shakespeare Head Press and of the perennial
dashed hopes of small presses’, which plagued Bullen. When the
Press passed to Basil Blackwell (1921), Bullen’s mantle was
assumed by the scholar-printer Bernard Newdigate. For twenty years,
he produced a series of finely printed books, yet these were not
commercially successful. Blackwell blamed the commodification of
literature, and the metamorphoses of books from handcrafted works
of art to manufactured objects. A Short and Beautiful Life
reconstructs the lives of Bernard Newdigate and A.H. Bullen, and
that of the Shakespeare Head Press. For Sir Basil Blackwell, ‘the
exact record of events was secondary to the universal truths it
served to illustrate.’ And there is something remarkably
contemporary about them.

After the murder of his fiancee by a vicious street gang, a man
rises from the grave to wreak bloody vengeance upon those who
wronged him. Fully remastered and revised by artist James O'Barr
himself, the timeless story of "The Crow" (also made into the cult
movie starring Brandon Lee) returns in a new author's edition with
over sixty pages of previously unseen material, including new story
pages.
This transnational, interdisciplinary study argues for the use of
comics as a primary source. In recuperating currently unknown or
neglected strips the authors demonstrate that these examples,
produced during the World Wars, act as an important cultural
record, providing, amongst other information, a barometer for
contemporary popular thinking.
