diary, and there is no posting required. And when you're finished,

This transnational, interdisciplinary study argues for the use of
comics as a primary source. In recuperating currently unknown or
neglected strips the authors demonstrate that these examples,
produced during the World Wars, act as an important cultural
record, providing, amongst other information, a barometer for
contemporary popular thinking.
An entertaining, informative, and elegantly designed guide that
makes understanding punctuation marks and symbols simple and fun. A
rollicking linguistic ride for fans of Eats, Shoots & Leaves
and Just My Type. What is the purpose of the comma - perhaps the
most used symbol in the English language - and what are the proper
uses of the asterisk? Do quote marks go inside or outside
punctuation? What about a quote within a quote - a quote from
someone quoting someone else? How much space goes on either side of
an ellipsis? What's the difference between an en dash and an em
dash? Snails and Monkey Tails is a show-stopping guide with more
than 75 uniquely designed two-colour spreads. Award-winning graphic
designer Michael Arndt explores the typographic origins, names, and
shapes of both common punctuation marks and symbols, as well as the
proper and diverse usage of each. From the full stop to the
question mark, the semicolon to the en dash, symbols and marks are
an integral part of language.

Tongan barkcloth, made from the inner bark of the paper mulberry
tree, still features lavishly in Polynesian ceremonies all over the
world. Yet despite the attention paid to this textile by
anthropologists and art historians alike, little is known about its
history. Providing a unique insight into Polynesian material
culture, this book explores barkcloth's rich cultural history, and
argues that its manufacture, decoration and use are vehicles of
creativity and female agency. Based on twelve years of extensive
ethnographic and archival research, the book uncovers stories of
ceremony, gender, the senses, religion and nationhood, from the
17th century up to the present-day. Placing the materiality of
textiles at the heart of Tongan culture, Veys reveals not only how
barkcloth was and continues to be made, but also how it defines
what it means to be Tongan. Extending the study to explore the
place of barkcloth in the European imagination, she examines
international museum collections of Tongan barkcloth, from the UK
and Italy to Switzerland and the USA, addressing the bias of the
European 'gaze' and challenging traditional gendered understandings
of the cloth. A nuanced narrative of past and present barkcloth
manufacture, designs and use, Unwrapping Tongan Barkcloth
demonstrates the importance of the textile to both historical and
contemporary Polynesian culture.
Mere clothing is transformed into desirable fashion by the way it
is represented in imagery. Fashion's Double examines how meanings
are projected onto garments through their representation, whether
in painting, photography, cinema or online fashion film, conveying
identity and status, eliciting fascination and desire. With
in-depth case studies including the work of Nick Knight and Helmut
Newton, film examples such as The Hunger Games, music video Girl
Panic by Duran Duran, and much more, this book analyses the
interrelationship between clothing, identity, embodiment,
representation and self-representation. Written for students and
scholars alike, Fashion's Double will appeal to anyone studying
fashion, cultural studies, art theory and history, photography,
sociology, and film.
An Accordion Book doesn’t open, it unfolds. One side is filled
with beautiful watercolour images of an animal: sometimes in
motion, sometimes at rest. The other is filled with text – poems,
descriptions, invocations – inspired by the same animal.Together
they work as spells to summon the animal’s spirit. Jackie Morris
has painted them using antique watercolours, some from boxes which
hadn't been opened for over 150 years, woken from their slumber
with a single drop of water.Fox and Otter are the first two
Accordions in a series that will go on to include Hare,Owl,Hound
and Cat among many others.

ahead with her diamonds and design business, partnering with Diana
Faulkner. David is never far from her thoughts as the five years

handsome Cy Warrington, it isn't easy for her to get back on track
and live down the failure. Can the Lord give her victory and the
desires of her heart? Can she keep her companies profitable and
embrace the relationships the Lord has placed in her life? It seems
like a lot for one so young. As her friends announce engagements
and rush to the marriage altar, can she resist being caught up in
the mad dash? Read Radiance and experience what the blessing of the
Lord can accomplish with a surrendered life.
Due to the huge success of her graphic memoir Fun Home: A Family
Tragicomic in 2006 and its subsequent Tony Award-winning musical
adaptation in 2009, Alison Bechdel (b. 1960) has recently become a
household name. However, Bechdel, who has won numerous awards
including a MacArthur Fellowship, has been writing and drawing
comics since the early 1980s. Her comic strip Dykes to Watch Out
For (DTWOF) stood out as one of the first to depict lesbians in
popular culture and is widely hailed as an essential LGBTQ
resource. It is also from this comic strip that the wildly popular
Bechdel Test-a test to gauge positive female representation in
film-obtained its name. While DTWOF secured Bechdel's role in the
comics world and queer community long before her mainstream
success, Bechdel now experiences notoriety that few comics artists
ever achieve and that women cartoonists have never attained.
Spanning from 1990 to 2017, Alison Bechdel: Conversations collects
ten interviews that illustrate how Bechdel uses her own life,
relationships, and contemporary events to expose the world to what
she has referred to as the ""fringes of acceptability""-the comics
genre as well as queer culture and identity. These interviews
reveal her intentionality in the use of characters, plots,
structure, and cartooning to draw her readers toward disrupting the
status quo. Starting with her earliest interviews on public access
television and in little-known comics and queer presses, Rachel R.
Martin traces Bechdel's career from her days with DTWOF to her
popularity with Fun Home and Are You My Mother? This volume
includes her ""one-off"" DTWOF strips from November 2016 and March
2017 (not anthologized anywhere else) and in-depth discussions of
her laborious creative process as well as upcoming projects.
