Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is indispensable in the spheres of business, government, education, and entertainment. It makes Internet marketing, e-government, elearning and online chat services possible, as well as e-commerce. With the radical impact of Covid-19 on consumer behaviour and buying patterns, it is now more crucial than ever for business training to cover at least the basics of e-commerce. E-Commerce in South Africa explores the ways in which entrepreneurs and managers can make use of e-commerce to improve their contact with their customers and enhance their business and marketing strategies. This multipurpose book will be invaluable to people involved in any form of business or government institution that relies on ICT. Those who will benefit from this book include students of business, business analysts, web page designers and webmasters, entrepreneurs and CEOs, risk managers, marketers, advertising specialists, logistics managers, strategic planning specialists and trainers in the business and ICT fields.
For centuries, working hard and saving up diligently would have set you up for financial security and a comfortable retirement. Not anymore. Over the last 50 years, we've entered a new financial world - one where your savings lose value faster than you can build them, a global mountain of debt piles up ever higher, and most people slip backwards however hard they try. In The Price of Money, a leading investment expert explains what's changed - and what you should do now we're here. You'll learn why currencies the world over have lost 99 per cent of their value, and how to use future declines to your advantage. You'll understand how the government can produce hundreds of billions out of thin air, and which investments benefit when they do. Most importantly, you'll be shown what's coming next - and how to position yourself to gain rather than suffer. You don't need even the slightest knowledge of economics to read this book - just a desire to understand why the world of money is working against you, and what to do about it.
The story of YouTube, the global phenomenon which single-handedly upended traditional media and transformed Google into one of the world's most profitable companies. Since 2005, YouTube has exploded, giving a platform to unique and valuable voices, but also to propaganda, misinformation and illicit videos. The algorithm which determines whether a channel lives or dies - how or when videos are seen, and how much creators earn through advertising - is notoriously secretive, remaining a mystery to consumers and broadcasters alike. At the same time, the site is massively profitable for parent company Google, helping turn it into one of the most influential powers on the planet. In Like, Comment, Subscribe, Bloomberg tech journalist Mark Bergen delivers the definitive account on YouTube, detailing how it started, how it works and ultimately how it drives Google's success. It can be seen as the story of a technical marvel that has upended traditional media and created stars out of everyday people, or the story of the rise of a ruthless advertising conglomerate with little regard for its impact on the world beyond the bottom line - but in reality, it's the story of both.
Facebook had a problem. Along with its sister platforms Instagram and WhatsApp, it was a daily destination for billions of users around the world, extolling its products for connecting people. But as a succession of scandals rocked Facebook from 2016, some began to question whether the company could control, or even understood, its own platforms. As Facebook employees searched for answers, what they uncovered was worse than they could've imagined. The problems ran far deeper than politics. Facebook was peddling and amplifying anger, looking the other way at human trafficking, enabling drug cartels and authoritarians and allowing VIP users to break the platform's supposedly inviolable rules. It turned out to be eminently possible to isolate many of Facebook's worst problems, but whenever employees offered solutions their work was consistently delayed, watered down or stifled by a company that valued user engagement above all else. The only option left was to blow the whistle. In Broken Code, award-winning Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz tells the riveting inside story of these employees and their explosive discoveries, uncovering the shocking cost of Facebook's blind ambition in the process.
Contemporary developments in the book publishing industry are
changing the system as we know it. Changes in established
understandings of authorship and readership are leading to new
business models in line with the postulates of Web 2.0. Socially
networked authorship, book production and reading are among the
social and discursive practices starting to define this emerging
system. Websites offering socially networked, collaborative and
shared reading are increasingly important. Social Reading maps
socially networked reading within the larger framework of a
changing conception of books and reading. This book is structured
into chapters covering topics in: social reading and a new
conception of the book; an evaluation of social reading platforms;
an analysis of social reading applications; the personalization of
system contents; reading in the Cloud and the development of new
business models; and Open Access e-books.
The cloud can be a powerful tool for conducting and managing
research. The Librarian s Guide to Academic Research in the Cloud
is a practical guide to using cloud services from a librarian s
point of view. As well as discussing how to use various cloud-based
services, the title considers the various privacy and data
portability issues associated with web-based services. This book
helps readers make the most of cloud computing, including how to
fold mobile devices into the cloud-based research management
equation. The book is divided into several chapters, each
considering a key aspect of academic research in the cloud,
including: defining the cloud; capturing information; capturing and
managing scholarly information; storing files; staying organized,
communicating; and sharing. The book ends by considering the future
of the cloud, examining what readers can expect from cloud services
in the next few years, and how research might be changed as a
result.
Indexing consists of both novel and more traditional techniques.
Cutting-edge indexing techniques, such as automatic indexing,
ontologies, and topic maps, were developed independently of older
techniques such as thesauri, but it is now recognized that these
older methods also hold expertise.
Web 2.0 technology is a hot topic at the moment, and public
librarians in particular are beginning to feel the pressure to
apply these tools. Indeed, Web 2.0 has the potential to transform
library services, but only if the policy and strategy for those
services are ready to be transformed. The author not only reviews
these tools and provides practical advice and case studies on how
they can be applied in the public library setting, but also
recommends the policies and business cases that begin to create a
new strategy for public libraries.
This book addresses the question of how knowledge is currently
documented, and may soon be documented in the context of what it
calls semantic publishing . This takes two forms: a more narrowly
and technically defined semantic web; as well as a broader notion
of semantic publishing. This book examines the ways in which
knowledge is represented in journal articles and books. By
contrast, it goes on to explore the potential impacts of semantic
publishing on academic research and authorship. It sets this in the
context of changing knowledge ecologies: the way research is done;
the way knowledge is represented and; the modes of knowledge access
used by researchers, students and the general public.
This book is about news search and monitoring. Aimed at

The quest to achieve high website rankings in search engine results
is a prominent subject for both academics and website
owners/coders. Website Visibility marries academic research results
to the world of the information practitioner and contains a focused
look at the elements which contribute to website visibility,
providing support for the application of each element with relevant
research. A series of real-world case studies with tested examples
of research on website visibility elements and their effect on
rankings are reviewed.
An exciting challenge to how the internet and ICT have been
understood in academia and popular culture and shows how important
cultural assumptions are in how we understand technology. The
Internet, Power and Society argues that the way in which we view
technology such as the internet owes much to older, historic views
of the media and to issues in contemporary society. Such
perspectives are deeply rooted in a Western view of technology and
the book concludes by offering a radically new perspective as to
how the internet can change a society that is truly global in its
application.
Wikis as information sources, as a form of publishing, and as tools
for collaboration, are discussed in this book. The applications of
wikis in library and information services, education and business
are explored, with examples. Provides an overview of wikis, in the
context of the increasing use of social software and the trend
towards a more interactive World Wide Web. The different kinds of
wikis are identified and described. The advantages and problems
associated with using wikis in information work and collaboration
are discussed. One of the problems is simply that of finding wikis
that deal with a particular topic or activity, and this is
addressed through a discussion of directories, search engines and
other finding tools. Later chapters cover the options for creating
wikis and the management of a wiki. The book concludes with lists
of resources related to wikis.

New media is like a giant jigsaw puzzle; a combination of different skills and media. We know all about the pieces, but the biggest problem is putting them all together to get the 'big picture' of new media design. Design for New Media gives a unified approach to looking at the area, covering both the separate elements, and putting them in the context of new media design as a whole. The book is divided into four sections; The first section considers some of the issues that arise from designing with new and developing technology. The author then moves on to look at the 'building blocks' of new media (sound, colour and animation), and their role in the design of a new media product is explained. The third section covers interaction design and those elements of new media that are connected with the use and understanding of the product. Finally, the process of design itself is considered in a practical way; how do you take that first step in designing a new media product?

Online social media are changing the face of politics in the United States. Beginning with a strong theoretical foundation grounded in political, communications and psychology literature, Tweeting to Power examines the effect of online social media on how people come to learn, understand and engage in politics. Gainous and Wagner propose that platforms such as Facebook and Twitter offer the opportunity for a new information flow that is no longer being structured and limited by the popular media. Television and newspapers, which were traditionally the sole or primary gatekeeper, can no longer limit or govern what information is exchanged. By lowering the cost of both supplying the information and obtaining it, social networking applications have recreated how, when and where people are informed. To establish this premise, Gainous and Wagner analyze multiple datasets, quantitative and qualitative, exploring and measuring the use of social media by voters and citizens as well as the strategies and approaches adopted by politicians and elected officials. They illustrate how these new and growing online communities are new forums for the exchange of information that is governed by relationships formed and maintained outside traditional media. Using empirical measures, they prove both how candidates utilize Twitter to shape the information voters rely upon and how effective this effort was at garnering votes in the 2010 congressional elections. With both theory and data, Gainous and Wagner show how the social media revolution is creating a new paradigm for political communication and shifting the very foundation of the political process.
From hashtag activism to the flood of political memes on social media, the landscape of political communication is being transformed by the grassroots circulation of opinion on digital platforms and beyond. By exploring how everyday people assist in the promotion of political media messages to persuade their peers and shape the public mind, Joel Penney offers a new framework for understanding the phenomenon of viral political communication: the citizen marketer. Like the citizen consumer, the citizen marketer is guided by the logics of marketing practice, but, rather than being passive, actively circulates persuasive media to advance political interests. Such practices include using protest symbols in social media profile pictures, strategically tweeting links to news articles to raise awareness about select issues, sharing politically-charged internet memes and viral videos, and displaying mass-produced T-shirts, buttons, and bumper stickers that promote a favored electoral candidate or cause. Citizens view their participation in such activities not only in terms of how it may shape or influence outcomes, but as a statement of their own identity. As the book argues, these practices signal an important shift in how political participation is conceptualized and performed in advanced capitalist democratic societies, as they casually inject political ideas into the everyday spaces and places of popular culture. While marketing is considered a dirty word in certain critical circles - particularly among segments of the left that have identified neoliberal market logics and consumer capitalist structures as a major focus of political struggle - some of these very critics have determined that the most effective way to push back against the forces of neoliberal capitalism is to co-opt its own marketing and advertising techniques to spread counter-hegemonic ideas to the public. Accordingly, this book argues that the citizen marketer approach to political action is much broader than any one ideological constituency or bloc. Rather, it is a means of promoting a wide range of political ideas, including those that are broadly critical of elite uses of marketing in consumer capitalist societies. The book includes an extensive historical treatment of citizen-level political promotion in modern democratic societies, connecting contemporary digital practices to both the 19th century tradition of mass political spectacle as well as more informal, culturally-situated forms of political expression that emerge from postwar countercultures. By investigating the logics and motivations behind the citizen marketer approach, as well as how it has developed in response to key social, cultural, and technological changes, Penney charts the evolution of activism in an age of mediatized politics, promotional culture, and viral circulation.
