Manpower Policies and Development in the Persian Gulf Region (Hardcover, New): Robert Looney Manpower Policies and Development in the Persian Gulf Region (Hardcover, New)
Robert Looney
R2,912 Discovery Miles 29 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The main thrust of this book is to address a number of manpower issues vital to the development of the Persian Gulf region. By taking a long-run perspective, the study creates a framework for the development of future manpower policies in the key countries: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Iran, and Iraq. The past policies in the region of growth-related investment, industrialization, and economic development should not be given priority over development-related human resource issues. Furthermore, the pressing need to accommodate demands for more highly skilled national manpower should not occur at the neglect of the region's culture and values.

Unequal Ageing in Europe - Women's Independence and Pensions (Hardcover): G. Betti, F. Bettio, T. Georgiadis, P. Tinios Unequal Ageing in Europe - Women's Independence and Pensions (Hardcover)
G. Betti, F. Bettio, T. Georgiadis, P. Tinios
R1,583 Discovery Miles 15 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While much is known about the situation in the labour market in the form of gender pay and earnings gaps, rather little is understood about their sequel in old age the gender pension gap. Entering the world of pensions may well signal a step backwards as far as women's independence is concerned, particularly in countries where women have earned economic independence in employment and are now being confronted by institutional frameworks presuming, encouraging or even imposing dependence. Unequal Ageing in Europe explores the gender pension gap across the member states of the European Union, plus Iceland and Norway. Employing microdata from the Survey of Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC), along with data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), the authors derive key facts regarding pension inequality between women and men. An intuitive indicator for a pension gender gap is derived and contrasted with equivalent indicators for pay and earnings gaps. The authors explore European diversity in a number of dimensions and benchmark their findings against equivalent findings in the US.

Non-Standard Employment in Post-Industrial Labour Markets - An Occupational Perspective (Paperback): Werner Eichhorst, Paul Marx Non-Standard Employment in Post-Industrial Labour Markets - An Occupational Perspective (Paperback)
Werner Eichhorst, Paul Marx
R1,479 Discovery Miles 14 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Examining the occupational variation within non-standard employment, this book combines case studies and comparative writing to illustrate how and why alternative occupational employment patterns are formed. Non-standard employment has grown significantly in most developed economies, varying between countries. Different institutional settings have been deemed accountable for this variation, although inadequate consideration has been given to differences within national labour markets. Through an occupational perspective, this book contends that patterns of non-standard employment are shaped by flexibility in hiring and firing practices and the dispensability of workers' skills. The framework integrates explanations based on labour market regulation, industrial relations and skill supply, filling the gaps in previous scholastic research. A necessary and discernible insight into employment patterns, academics in the fields of economics and sociology will find this book of great value. Policy makers and practitioners alike will benefit from the comparative analysis of rich empirical material. Contributors: F. Berton, M.R. Busemeyer, H. Chung, M. Dieckhoff, W. Eichhorst, B. Robert Mason, Alan Porter, J.David Roessner, Frederic Rossini, A. Perry Schwartz
R2,939 Discovery Miles 29 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book identifies and analyzes the various ways in which office automation will have an impact on the future of clerical employment in the banking and insurance industries over the period 1985-2000. By focusing on how office automation could affect both aggregate levels of clerical employment and the nature of clerical tasks, the book offers readers a rich and detailed basis for their thinking and action concerning office automation. It also presents a newly developed forecasting method that can be used by analysts and researchers to investigate in detail the potential effects that rapidly changing technologies could have on work and workers.

Underemployment - Psychological, Economic, and Social Challenges (Hardcover, 2011): Douglas C. Maynard, Daniel C. Feldman Underemployment - Psychological, Economic, and Social Challenges (Hardcover, 2011)
Douglas C. Maynard, Daniel C. Feldman
R4,613 Discovery Miles 46 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Underemployment - when people are employed in some way that is insufficient, such as being overqualified or working part-time when one desires full-time employment - is a challenge faced by all industrialized nations and their organizations and individuals. Just like unemployment, some level of underemployment exists even in the best of times, but it becomes more pervasive when the job market is weak. Given the current economic climate in North America and abroad, researchers and scholars in various disciplines (psychology, business, sociology, economics) are becoming more interested in investigating the effects of underemployment and identifying possible practical solutions. Underemployment synthesizes the current understanding of the phenomenon by bringing together scholars with diverse perspectives and expertise with the aim of informing and guiding the next generation of underemployment research.

Informal Workers and Organized Action - Narratives From the Global South (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Neetu Choudhary Informal Workers and Organized Action - Narratives From the Global South (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Neetu Choudhary
R3,101 Discovery Miles 31 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book utilizes the School to Work Transition Survey (SWTS) of the ILO to discuss what shapes an individual worker's decision to participate in unionization and how her working condition is affected by that.. There remains a disconnect as far as our understanding of the relationship between the labour's choice to unionize as individual actor and the broader socioeconomic, political and cultural context of that choice, is concerned.Using the SWTS data, the book focuses on the identification of the correlates of workers' propensity to unionize, the outcomes of unionizing and their synthesis with the wider political economy context to arrive at stylized patterns in the way informal workers exercise their agency. The book also reflects upon field data on organizing challenges of migrant workers in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic in India. The book does not claim to establish any causality but is interested in bringing out broad patterns that define informal workers' organizing in a particular context. In the process, the book ends up with the preposition that despite all the heterogeneities across regions, informal workers' organizing today can be understood through the lens of pragmatism.

New Social Mobility - Second Generation Pioneers in Europe (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Jens Schneider, Maurice Crul, Andreas Pott New Social Mobility - Second Generation Pioneers in Europe (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Jens Schneider, Maurice Crul, Andreas Pott
R1,690 Discovery Miles 16 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This open access book comparatively analyses intergenerational social mobility in immigrant families in Europe. It is based on qualitative in-depth research into several hundred biographies and professional trajectories of young people with an immigrant working-class background, who made it into high-prestige professions. The biographies were collected and analysed by a consortium of researchers in nine European countries from Norway to Spain. Through these analyses, the book explores the possibilities of cross-country comparisons of how trajectories are related to different institutional arrangements at the national and local level. The analysis uncovers the interaction effects between structural/institutional settings and specific individual achievements and family backgrounds, and how these individuals responsed to and navigated successfully through sector-specific pathways into high-skilled professions, such as becoming a lawyer or a teacher. By this, it also explains why these trajectories of professional success and upward mobility have been so exceptional in the second generation of working-class origins, and it tells us a lot also about exclusion mechanisms that marked the school and professional careers of children of immigrants who went to school in the 1970s to 2000s in Europe - and still do.

The central themes of this book are- required skill formation, upskilling of the workers, and their interaction with technological change in lieu of a deficient educational system and its implications. An empirical investigation of the causes and consequences of low skill and technology indicators using a primary survey at macro and micro levels is undertaken. This is followed by an examination of the interaction between the low skill and technology indicators, the relationships between skill, upskilling and technology indicators, skills mismatch, the uses and impacts of ICT and differences at firm as well as industry level as well as knowledge transfer effects. A set of recommendations towards the need for implementation of consistent policies, increasing incentives and collaboration between public and private institutions completes the book.

Women Migrant Workers in China's Economic Reform (Hardcover): F. Xu Women Migrant Workers in China's Economic Reform (Hardcover)
F. Xu
R1,601 Discovery Miles 16 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Women Migrant Workers in China's Economic Reform studies unmarried women migrant workers in China. As international migrants in China's richest province, they work in silk, one of China's oldest and most symbolically-charged industries. Through extensive interviews and a wide-ranging interpretation of the secondary literature, this book brings an interdisciplinary approach to its study of power and identity. Gender, class, and local identities matter in the factories and streets of a one-industry town, and municipal and factory leaders seek to rework these over-shifting forces to build a low-cost, reliable labour force. The women in question seek to rework these disadvantages by the same forces, have other aspirations!

R2,623 Discovery Miles 26 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume presents 19 national case studies of international migration. . . . The authors of these well-written, detailed, but nontechnical chapters have complied with the editors' request, thereby yielding a number of general observations that appear to hold across these diverse countries. "Choice"

Immigration, the most difficult of all the demographic processes to document accurately, has the most immediate impact on a nation's demographic structure and the essays included in this volume provide a useful overview of the immigration process as it is currently structured. In order to facilitate transnational comparisons, each contributor has adhered to a common outline which includes historical setting, legal policies, types and quality of data, major international migrations, demographic effects of international migration, social and economic effects of international migration, and public policy issues. The future of international migration is also assessed.

The individual chapters are devoted to case studies of immigration in a variety of national settings. Included are chapters dealing with the principal receiving nations of permanent immigration; countries where immigration consists mainly of short-term imported labor; countries receiving an influx of persons from former colonial territories; countries where immigration is based on religious factors or which are destinations of refugees; and countries whose history as a colony influences current immigration and emigration patterns. Additional chapters address economically advanced countries and also focus on some of the principal sending nations of current international population flows. Offering insights into the economic consequences of migration from the perspectives of both sending and receiving nations, assessing the overall impact of immigration, and detailing the contributions of immigrants, Handbook on International Migration is an important resource for public policymakers and those who must be cognizant of the economic and demographic situation of other nations.

Demographic Dividends: Emerging Challenges and Policy Implications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Roberta Pace, Roberto Ham Chande Demographic Dividends: Emerging Challenges and Policy Implications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)

This book examines potential economic opportunities that countries can experience when fertility rates fall and the average life expectancy of the working age population increases. It presents detailed demographic and economic analysis of middle-income countries throughout the world in order to show how these countries can take advantage of this demographic bonus. The book first traces the common link between policies that contribute to fertility transition as well as create the right kind of environment for reaping the benefit of demographic dividend. Next, it explores different countries and regions who are at different levels of development. It assesses the long term impact of gender equality on economic growth and development in Latin America; describes the life-cycle saving patterns of Mexican households; and examines demographic determinants of economic growth in BRICS. The book also offers demographic and economic analysis of the Mediterranean area, Sub-Saharan Africa, and New Zealand. The comparison between the different territorial contexts allow for the identification of three typologies of demographic dividend: the first dividend, when the working population grows faster than total population, the second dividend, as active generations get older and invest their savings in the production system of their country, and the third dividend, based on the coexistence of two populations age structure strongly contrasting. Overall, this book argues for the need to capitalize on the opportunities that come from the demographic dividend by investing heavily in education programs, training programs for the population working age, health programs, the creation of health insurance systems as well as programs to reduce or increase fertility levels.

R1,215 Discovery Miles 12 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Gendered Lives deserves to find its way onto the bookshelf of students and scholars seeking to better understand the big picture of gender dynamics at home and at work, particularly as it plays out in the British context. Graduate students will likely most appreciate the broad overview the book provides, and I can see it provoking lively debate in advanced classes. Scholars with more focused interests will also no doubt find considerable value in particular chapters, while also being prompted to new insights and connections by the diversity of disciplinary contributions.'- S. Fuller, University of British Columbia, Canada 'This state-of-the art collection brings together the latest research of eminent experts in the field. It combines a wide sweep with focused analysis of gender dynamics at home and at work, and the interaction between them. A longitudinal and life course perspective underpins the authors' assessment of the current state of gender inequality, and helps explain why some domains are more resistant to change than others. This timely and innovative volume will be an excellent resource for academics and policy-makers alike.' - Miriam Glucksmann, University of Essex, UK This meticulous book examines how gender inequalities in contemporary societies are changing and how further changes towards greater gender equality might be achieved. The focus of the book is on inequalities in production and reproductive activities, as played out over time and in specific contexts. It examines the different forms that gendered lives take in the household and the workplace, and explores how gender equalities may be promoted in a changing world. Gendered Lives offers many novel and sometimes unexpected findings that contribute to new understandings of not only the causes of gender inequalities but also the ongoing implications for economic well-being and societal integration. This topical and interdisciplinary study by leading researchers in the field will appeal to course leaders, researchers and postgraduate students in sociology, economics, public policy, demography and human geography. Social scientists interested in gender equality, labor market behavior and public policy will also find much to interest them in this fascinating book. Contributors: A. Batnitzky, F. Bennett, E. aSuperb...this study is destined to be the authoritative work on Dubinskyas career. Parmetas balanced assessment of his subject, combined with the breadth of his research and the skillful writing, make this an exemplary biography.a
--"American Historical Review"

"[Parmet's] biography has put Dubinsky back on the historical map and is a must read for historians."
--"The Journal of American History"

"For four decades, David Dubinsky stood in the top ranks of American labor. As head of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU), he helped organize basic industry and led the fight to provide workers everywhere with decent wages, health care and housing. A leading liberal and anti-communist, a powerful figure in New York politics, and an important player in Cold War foreign policy, Dubinsky sparked fury among his opponents and fierce loyalty among his many supporters. At last this extraordinary figure has a biographer who does him justice. Robert Parmet draws on years of deep research to paint an admiring but not uncritical portrait of Dubinsky in "The Master of Seventh Avenue," judiciously taking us through the intricate world of the garment industry and its hothouse politics. Parmet does a great service in bringing back to life this once household name."
--Joshua B. Freeman, author of "Working-Class New York: Life and Labor since World War II"

"Parmet's work will surely have an honored place on the shelves of Cornell University'sKheel Labor Center, as has an earlier work, "David Dubinsky: A Life with Labor," co-authored by Dubinsky himself and A.H. Raskin, one of the "New York Times's" famed labor reporters."
--"The Weekly Standard"

"This volume, which contains an eight-page photo section, will appeal to labor history scholars and biography enthusiasts."
--"CHOICE, recommended"

""The Master of Seventh Avenue" explores the life of David Dubinsky, an East European Jewish immigrant who grew up with the ILGWU. One of the most forceful labor leaders of the twentieth century, Dubinsky also pioneered in the civil rights movement, actively involved his union in domestic politics, and fought vigorously for all workers in the international sphere. The Master of Seventh Avenue is the definitive biography of David Dubinsky (1892a1982), one of the most controversial and influential labor leaders in 20th-century America. A acharactera in the truest sense of the word, Dubinsky was both revered and reviled, but never dull, conformist, or bound by convention. A Jewish labor radical, Dubinsky fled czarist Poland in 1910 and began his career as a garment worker and union agitator in New York City. He quickly rose through the ranks of the International Ladiesa Garment Workersa Union (ILGWU) and became its president in 1932. Dubinsky led the ILGWU for thirty-four years, where he championed asocial unionism, a which offered workers benefits ranging from health care to housing. Moving beyond the realm of the ILGWU, Dubinsky also played a leading role in the American Federation of Labor (AFL), particularly during World War II. A staunch anti-communist, Dubinsky worked tirelessly to rid the American labor movement of communists and fellow-travelers.

Robert D. Parmet also chronicles Dubinskyas influential role in local, national, and international politics. An extraordinary personality whose life and times present a fascinating lens into the American labor movement, Dubinsky leaps off the pages of this meticulously researched and vividly detailed biography.

Globalization, Technological Change, and Labor Markets (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): Stanley W. Black Globalization, Technological Change, and Labor Markets (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Stanley W. Black
R4,746 Discovery Miles 47 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Globalization, Technological Change and Labor Markets is an edited collection of papers drawn from the conference held at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies in June 1997. This conference brought German and American perspectives to bear on the complex issues of global competition, technological change, and labor markets in the welfare state. The contributions are organized into five sections dealing with various aspects of the problem: (1) Macroeconomic Perspectives; (2) Microeconomic Aspects; (3) the German Model of Labor Relations; (4) the Social Market Economy; and (5) Trade Policy and Environmental and Labor Standards. This edited collection seeks to explore many of the key issues surrounding the debate over the impact of globalization and technological change on labor markets in Europe and the United States. This volume provides path-breaking insights as to why globalization has wreaked havoc on the welfare states that had once propelled Western Europe and North America to an unprecedented standard of living throughout the post-war period. The high level of scholarship contained in the individual chapters forms a compelling argument that will convince even the most resistant skeptics that the days of the classic welfare state are numbered. More importantly, this book is filled with concrete suggestions based on careful economic analysis as to how technological change and globalization can be harnessed in conjunction with a new role of the state to provide a high standard of living.' R2,934 Discovery Miles 29 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about families who combine home life and income-producing work under the same roof. Based on 899 homeworking households in nine states, the analysis presents detailed information about individual worker and household characteristics; work characteristics for both business owners and wage workers; family functioning types; management behavior; and adjustment strategies used in family life, the community context, and the home-based employment experience over an extended period of time. This is the first publication of a serious longitudinal study of the phenomenon of working from home with historical considerations of how and why so many people are choosing this option. It points to the significantly positive impact at-home workers are having on their families, their neighborhoods, and their communities.
