Our Lives in Their Portfolios - Why Asset Managers Own the World (Hardcover): Brett Christophers Our Lives in Their Portfolios - Why Asset Managers Own the World (Hardcover)
Brett Christophers
R626 R567 Discovery Miles 5 670 Save R59 (9%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Banks have taken a backseat since the global financial crisis over a decade ago. Today, our new financial masters are asset managers, like Blackstone and BlackRock. And they don't just own financial assets. The roads we drive on; the pipes that supply our drinking water; the farmland that provides our food; energy systems for electricity and heat; hospitals, schools, and even the homes in which many of us live-all now swell asset managers' bulging investment portfolios. As the owners of more and more of the basic building blocks of everyday life, asset managers shape the lives of each and every one of us in profound and disturbing ways. In this eye-opening follow-up to Rentier Capitalism, Brett Christophers peels back the veil on ""asset manager society."" Asset managers, he shows, are unlike traditional owners of housing and other essential infrastructure. Buying and selling these life-supporting assets at a dizzying pace, the crux of their business model is not long-term investment and careful custodianship but making quick profits for themselves and the investors that back them. In asset manager society, the natural and built environments that sustain us become one more vehicle for siphoning money from the many to the few.

Unfolding Crisis in Assam's Tea Plantations - Employment and Occupational Mobility (Hardcover, New): Deepak K. Mishra,... Unfolding Crisis in Assam's Tea Plantations - Employment and Occupational Mobility (Hardcover, New)
Deepak K. Mishra, Vandana Upadhyay, Atul Sarma
R4,448 Discovery Miles 44 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the Indian economy integrates into global circuits of production, exchange and accumulation, the burdens of adjustment are shared unequally by different sectors, classes and regions. This study unravels the livelihood strategies and living conditions of labour in the tea gardens of Assam. The tea sector has been undergoing a crisis since the 1990s, with stagnant production, decline in exports, and closures of many tea gardens leading to large-scale retrenchments in the labour force. Based on a detailed analysis of secondary data and primary field research, the study examines the extent, types and implications of inter-generational occupational mobility (or immobility) among tea garden labourers in Assam. In the process, it reflects on how even a sector that had brought capital and labour from outside and contributed significantly to the country's export earnings failed to create dynamic growth linkages within the local economy. The experience of the labour force in the Assam tea sector, the authors argue, is important for making sense not only of the development dynamics of the region, but of the contradictory ways in which forces of globalisation and neo-liberal reforms have been reshaping the worlds of labourers in the margins. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of labour studies, development studies, management studies, and studies of north-east India, as well as to policy-makers and those in the tea industry.

Increasing life expectancy in Europe entails a remodelling of career development and life course, marked by discontinuities and changing professional activities. One of the concerns is ensuring that everybody may participate in gainful activities during his or her life course while also guaranteeing social rights through adequate social protection. By means of legal, socio-political and empirical analyses this book embarks on the interrelationship of different social protection mechanisms and the resulting difficulties of adapting to these new employment patterns. It presents European impulses and the reactions of several European states to the challenge of reconciling flexibility of employment and modernisation of social protection.

The Social Economy - Working Alternatives in a Globalizing Era (Paperback): Hasmet M. Uluorta The Social Economy - Working Alternatives in a Globalizing Era (Paperback)
Hasmet M. Uluorta
R361 Discovery Miles 3 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Critically examining economic developments within the last sixty years, this book argues that a crisis in global social reproduction is altering existing understandings of work, labour and the economy. The author of this original volume, Hasmet M. Uluorta, contends that the crisis in the global economy is triggering a potential paradigm shift from one defined under the rubric of Employment to an alternative theorized as Work. Discussing the Employment paradigm that formed the dominant mode of development after the Second World War through to the 1970s, the author considers the economic and political forces that resulted in its eventual decline. Focusing on already existing practices of organizations and workers in Toronto, Canada, the book goes on to consider the shift to Work and the consequent rise in the social economy which has broken down conventional categories of work and leisure. The author concludes that the social economy presents fundamental challenges to understandings that underpinned the previous economic order. Building on insights from a range of disciplines, The Social Economy will be of interest to students and scholars of international political economy, international relations, labour studies, sociology, and globalization studies.

The Division of Labor in Economics - A History (Hardcover): Guang-Zhen Sun The Division of Labor in Economics - A History (Hardcover)
Guang-Zhen Sun
R4,451 Discovery Miles 44 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides, for the first time, a systematic and comprehensive narrative of the history of one central idea in economics, namely the division of labour, over the past two and a half millennia, with special focus on that having occurred in the most recent two and a half centuries. Quite contrary to the widely held belief, the idea has a fascinating biography, much richer than that exemplified by the pin-making story that was popularized by Adam Smith's classical work published in 1776.

Globalization, Labour Markets and Inequality in India (Paperback): Dipak Mazumdar, Sandip Sarkar Globalization, Labour Markets and Inequality in India (Paperback)
Dipak Mazumdar, Sandip Sarkar
R1,433 Discovery Miles 14 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

India started on a program of reforms, both in its external and internal aspects, sometime in the mid-eighties and going on into the nineties. While the increased exposure to world markets (?globalization?) and relaxation of domestic controls has undoubtedly given a spurt to the GDP growth rate, its impact on poverty, inequality and employment have been controversial. This book examines in detail these aspects of post-reform India and discerns the changes and trends which these new developments have created. Providing an original analysis of unit-level data available from the quinquennial National Sample Surveys, the Annual Surveys of Industries and other basic data sources, the authors analyse and compare the results with other pieces of work in the literature. As well as describing the overall situation for India, the book highlights regional differences, and looks at the major industrial sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and tertiary services. The important topic of labor market institutions - both for the formal or organized and the unorganized sectors - is considered and the possible adverse effect on employment growth of the regulatory labor framework is examined carefully. Since any reform of this framework must go hand in hand with better state intervention in the informal sector to have any chance of acceptance politically, some of the major initiatives in this area are critically explored. Overall, this book will be of great interest to development economists, labour economists and specialists in South Asian Studies.

Unemployment in Ireland - Alternative Perspectives (Paperback): Charles Clark, Catherine Kavanagh Unemployment in Ireland - Alternative Perspectives (Paperback)
Charles Clark, Catherine Kavanagh
R1,074 Discovery Miles 10 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Published in 1998, this book looks at unemployment in Ireland, the country's most serious social and economic problem. It is the major contributor to poverty, exclusion and social decay. This book contributes to the growing debate on the unemployment problem in Ireland. It is the first academic collection of papers on this issue and contains contributions from some of Ireland's most respected economists. It offers alternative views of the Irish labour market, with these views shedding light on many aspects of the unemployment problem, including exchange rates influences, aggregate demand analysis, labour market policies and the historical perspective. Since this book assesses the problem of unemployment from different perspectives, it should widen the discussion of this most serious issue.

Young People and Work (Hardcover, New Ed): Barbara Pini Young People and Work (Hardcover, New Ed)
Barbara Pini; Robin Price, Paula McDonald
R4,306 Discovery Miles 43 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This edited book brings together empirical studies of young people in paid employment from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and in different national settings. In the context of increasing youth labour market participation rates and debates about the value of early employment, it draws on multi-level analyses to reflect the complexity of the field. Each of the three sections of the book explores a key aspect of young people's employment: their experience of work, intersections between work and education, and the impact of other actors and institutions. The book contributes to broadening and strengthening knowledge about the opportunities and constraints that young people face during their formative experiences in the labour market. This book will be required reading for all those working in the fields of sociology, employment relations and education

Embodied Engineering - Gendered Labor, Food Security, and Taste in Twentieth-Century Mali (Paperback): Laura Ann Twagira Embodied Engineering - Gendered Labor, Food Security, and Taste in Twentieth-Century Mali (Paperback)
Laura Ann Twagira
R908 Discovery Miles 9 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Foregrounding African women's ingenuity and labor, this pioneering case study shows how women in rural Mali have used technology to ensure food security through the colonial period, environmental crises, and postcolonial rule. By advocating for an understanding of rural Malian women as engineers, Laura Ann Twagira rejects the persistent image of African women as subjects without technological knowledge or access and instead reveals a hidden history about gender, development, and improvisation. In so doing, she also significantly expands the scope of African science and technology studies. Using the Office du Niger agricultural project as a case study, Twagira argues that women used modest technologies (such as a mortar and pestle or metal pots) and organized female labor to create, maintain, and reengineer a complex and highly adaptive food production system. While women often incorporated labor-saving technologies into their work routines, they did not view their own physical labor as the problem it is so often framed to be in development narratives. Rather, women's embodied techniques and knowledge were central to their ability to transform a development project centered on export production into an environmental resource that addressed local taste and consumption needs.

Workers Without Traditional Employment - An International Study of Non-standard Work (Hardcover): John Mangan Workers Without Traditional Employment - An International Study of Non-standard Work (Hardcover)
John Mangan
R3,059 Discovery Miles 30 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The task faced by modern labour market analysts is a complex one. Alternative working arrangements are collectively referred to as 'non-standard employment' even though they lack a common set of characteristics in terms of participants, occupations and skill levels. This section of the labour market can no longer be regarded as peripheral. Workers Without Traditional Employment aims to provide a comprehensive and global analysis of the significant changes in employment relationships that have occurred over the last two decades. The author discusses the incidence, causes, and social and economic implications of non-standard employment. Shifts in the nature of employment are placed within the wider context of modern labour markets seeking to cope with rapid changes in international business practice and the pressures of a globalised economy. The book argues that while much non-standard employment has country-specific aspects, there exists a common set of underlying factors influencing the spread of non-standard employment across the world. The final part of the book deals with the implications of employment change for work/family interaction and examines likely future trends. This book will be invaluable reading for academics and researchers in economics, business and industrial relations as well as social scientists and professionals within the business world.

The Applied Economics of Labour (Hardcover): Mark Taylor The Applied Economics of Labour (Hardcover)
Mark Taylor
R1,345 Discovery Miles 13 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides an introduction and overview to seven applied financial studies on the theme of labour. The studies cover a wide range of topics, from the individual effects of becoming disabled on key aspects of labour market outcomes in Germany, to testing whether there is evidence of compression of morbidity using Health and Retirement Study (HRS) data and analysing the effects of this on the labour supply of older people. The studies employ a variety of applied techniques across a range of countries. This book was originally published as a special issue of Applied Economics.

Women, Gender and Labour Migration - Historical and Cultural Perspectives (Paperback): Pamela Sharpe Women, Gender and Labour Migration - Historical and Cultural Perspectives (Paperback)
Pamela Sharpe
R1,426 Discovery Miles 14 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Approximately half of all migrants today are female. The contributors to this volume consider the ways in which attention to gender is moving debates away from old paradigms, such as the push/pull motivation which used to dominate the field of migration studies. The authors consider women's experience of migration, especially in long distance, transnational moves. They examine the extent to which labour migration is a social and strategic decision for women.

The Economics of Language (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Donald M. Lamberton The Economics of Language (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Donald M. Lamberton
R5,057 Discovery Miles 50 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The economics of language remains neglected territory. Language makes information operational. As a social technology, it is a resource of the symbolic species - some argue it defines the human species. Language affects ability to find employment; cultural identity, effective communication in business, international trade, and tourism; negotiations and settlement procedures; political activity; and conflict within and between nations. Donald Lamberton, a leading scholar in the field, has selected key papers which address issues such as why some languages survive and others do not, the importance of language to the operation of a world-wide business, the problem of the language divide in economic development and the future of new language technologies such as telephone interpreting services, the internet and talking machines. This authoritative collection of papers contributes, in the words of Jacob Marschak, to 'the essential stuff of economics, in particular the economics of uncertainty that characterizes problems of human information, communication and organization'.

Changes in Japanese Employment Practices - Beyond the Japanese Model (Paperback): Arjan Keizer Changes in Japanese Employment Practices - Beyond the Japanese Model (Paperback)
Arjan Keizer
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Japan s employment practices were long considered a cornerstone to its economic success. However, the reversal in economic performance during the 1990s altered the positive perception and inspired major adaptations like the rise in performance-related pay ( seikashugi ) and non-regular employment. This book presents case-studies of the adaptations in personnel management by major Japanese firms. It highlights the diversity, the stability and the considerations behind the adaptations that are implemented by these firms. Drawing on insights from institutional theory, it shows how factors such as legitimacy and institutional interlock have guaranteed an important continuity in employment practices. It discusses how the adaptations have not actually replaced the existing practices but have been shaped by them and, as a consequence, the result may not be as revolutionary as once expected but is likely to last. Furthermore, it argues that the employment practices remain specifically Japanese and that expectations of convergence have so far proved misplaced.

Overall, this book is a valuable contribution to the study of employment issues. It provides an effective framework to analyse the ongoing developments in Japanese employment practices and demonstrates that Japanese developments continue to offer important insights for human resource management and labour market institutionalisation in general.

The Economics of Labor Unions (Hardcover): Alison L. Booth The Economics of Labor Unions (Hardcover)
Alison L. Booth
R16,152 Discovery Miles 161 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This comprehensive collection brings together an impressive range of papers on the economics of labor unions. Some of these are classics, and others are less well known - included because they cover significant but under-researched areas, or because they raise interesting questions that as yet remain unanswered. The study of labor unions has long fascinated economists. Over the last quarter of the twentieth century there has been a tremendous evaluation of research in this area. This blossoming occurred with the growth of labor economics as a discipline separate from industrial relations, and with the development of micro data sets and the dissemination of sophisticated new micro-econometric techniques with which to analyse them. These volumes include papers that not only span the most important topics in the economics of labor unions, but also offer a useful overview of the field and its methodology. They will prove invaluable both to researchers and practitioners.

Social Failures of EU Enlargement - A Case of Workers Voting with their Feet (Hardcover): Guglielmo Meardi Social Failures of EU Enlargement - A Case of Workers Voting with their Feet (Hardcover)
Guglielmo Meardi
R4,446 Discovery Miles 44 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Is the EU enlargement the success EU institutions proclaim? Based on fifteen years of fieldwork research across Central and Eastern Europe and on migrants in the UK and Germany, this book provides a less glittering answer. The EU has betrayed hopes of social cohesion: social regulations have been forgotten, multinationals use threats of relocations, and workers, left without institutional channels to voice their concerns, have reacted by leaving their countries en masse. Yet migration, for many, increases social vulnerability. Drawing on Hirschman's concepts of 'Exit' and 'Voice', the book traces the origins of such failures in the management of EU enlargement as a pure economic and market-creating exercise, neglecting the inherently political nature of labour relations. The reinforcement of market mechanisms without political counterbalances has resulted in an increase in opportunistic 'exit' behaviour by both employers and employees, and thereby in a worsening quality of democracy, at workplace, national and European levels. As a result of this process, the EU has become more similar to the North American Free Trade Agreement between USA, Canada and Mexico, where social rights are marginalized and economic integration does not translate into better development.

The Unequal Unemployed - Discrimination, Unemployment and State Policy in Northern Ireland (Paperback): Maura Sheehan, Mike... The Unequal Unemployed - Discrimination, Unemployment and State Policy in Northern Ireland (Paperback)
Maura Sheehan, Mike Tomlinson
R755 Discovery Miles 7 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1999, this volume is about unemployment and discrimination, with a focus on Northern Ireland and its debate over patterns of inequality between unemployed Catholics and Protestants. The Unequal Unemployed uses the important and revealing context of Northern Ireland to review the international debate on discrimination and the role of unemployment within it. This intellectual and political debate, active throughout the past decade, represents a conflict between: a) The traditional view that unequal unemployment is evidence of labour market discrimination against minorities and other distinct social groupings. b) Recent models which explain unemployment either in terms of individual responsibility or innate inferiority and attack the 'equal opportunities industry for its attempts at social engineering. Maura Sheehan and Mike Tomlinson approach these theories using unique survey evidence, gathered through a comprehensive evaluation of anti-discrimination policy. They contradict the view that differences in unemployment between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland are the result of personal attitudes and 'religious culture'. The book demonstrates that unequal unemployment arises from various discriminatory structures and practices - all of which are amenable to policy intervention. However, while more radical measures may achieve change, these must be developed within a policy framework which stimulates labour demand and economic development. Such a framework is constrained by the continuing political conflict within Northern Ireland.

The Economics of Trade Unions - A Study of a Research Field and Its Findings (Paperback): Hristos Doucouliagos, Richard B.... The Economics of Trade Unions - A Study of a Research Field and Its Findings (Paperback)
Hristos Doucouliagos, Richard B. Freeman, Patrice Laroche
R1,288 Discovery Miles 12 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Richard B. Freeman and James L. Medoff's now classic 1984 book What Do Unions Do? stimulated an enormous theoretical and empirical literature on the economic impact of trade unions. Trade unions continue to be a significant feature of many labor markets, particularly in developing countries, and issues of labor market regulations and labor institutions remain critically important to researchers and policy makers. The relations between unions and management can range between cooperation and conflict; unions have powerful offsetting wage and non-wage effects that economists and other social scientists have long debated. Do the benefits of unionism exceed the costs to the economy and society writ large, or do the costs exceed the benefits? The Economics of Trade Unions offers the first comprehensive review, analysis and evaluation of the empirical literature on the microeconomic effects of trade unions using the tools of meta-regression analysis to identify and quantify the economic impact of trade unions, as well as to correct research design faults, the effects of selection bias and model misspecification. This volume makes use of a unique dataset of hundreds of empirical studies and their reported estimates of the microeconomic impact of trade unions. Written by three authors who have been at the forefront of this research field (including the co-author of the original volume, What Do Unions Do?), this book offers an overview of a subject that is of huge importance to scholars of labor economics, industrial and employee relations, and human resource management, as well as those with an interest in meta-analysis.

Dreaming Mobility and Buying Vulnerability - Overseas Recruitment Practices in India (Hardcover): S.Irudaya Rajan, V. J.... Dreaming Mobility and Buying Vulnerability - Overseas Recruitment Practices in India (Hardcover)
S.Irudaya Rajan, V. J. Varghese, M. S. Jayakumar
R1,797 Discovery Miles 17 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the alarming contemporary context of widespread corruption and fraudulence in the overseas labour recruitment system in India, this book attempts to understand the institution of emigration governance and recruitment practices in the country with a focus on the unskilled and semi-skilled sectors. It brings together the results of research in the major emigration hubs of India with the aid of quantitative and qualitative tools, drawing from all the major stakeholders -intending emigrants, recruiting agents, return emigrants, emigrant households, Protector of Emigrants, foreign employers, foreign recruiting agents, Indian missions and emigrant workers at the destination countries. The book unravels the underlying discriminatory rationality of the existing system of emigration governance, its logical and structural incoherencies and the consequent inefficacy in protecting the most vulnerable sections of workers leaving India for overseas employment, resulting in unaffordable levels of transaction and social costs. By outlining the institutional failure, the volume outlines the fundamental principles of a new institution which would facilitate orderly, safe and secure emigration, economically sustainable beneficial expatriate life and social protection after the emigrants return. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of sociology, law, economics, demography, anthropology, history, gender studies, cultural studies, Diaspora studies, migration studies and international relations, apart from policy-makers and administrators of transnational migration and NGOs working in the field of migration.

Labor, Democratization and Development in India and Pakistan (Paperback): Christopher Candland Labor, Democratization and Development in India and Pakistan (Paperback)
Christopher Candland
R1,409 Discovery Miles 14 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this first comparative study of organized labor in India and Pakistan, the author analyses the impact and role of organized labor in democratization and development. The study provides a unique comparative history of Indian and Pakistani labor politics. It begins in the early twentieth century, when permanent unions first formed in the South Asian Subcontinent. Additionally, it offers an analysis of changes in conditions of work and terms of service in India and Pakistan and of organized labor's response. The conclusions shed new light on the influence of organized labor in national politics, economic policy, economic welfare and at the workplace. It is demonstrated that the protection of workers has desirable outcomes not only for those workers covered but also for democratic practice and for economic development.

Socio-economic Mobility and Low-status Minorities - Slow roads to progress (Paperback): Jacob Meerman Socio-economic Mobility and Low-status Minorities - Slow roads to progress (Paperback)
Jacob Meerman
R1,420 Discovery Miles 14 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book concentrates on ethnic minorities such as former slaves, outcastes and indigenous peoples dispossessed of homeland. These groups are universally without power, usually undereducated, and always victims of their fellow citizens. The book asks why these socially excluded groups remain at the bottom of their social hierarchies as the poorest of the poor, even in nations long committed to equal opportunity. Their slow progress has four causes: obviously discrimination and poor education, but also low economic growth and cultural heritage. Low growth limits revenues for schools as well as new job opportunities, and perpetuates traditional exploitative social relations and customs. Traumatic histories of enslavement or conquest may induce behaviours by victims that reduce upward mobility. Together these four interacting variables suggest a "mobility model" that explains the impasse. The book develops and applies this model to interpret and compare the mobility history of five stigmatized, low-status ethnic groups: U.S. African Americans, Japan's Burakumin, Afro-Cubans, India's Dalits (Untouchables) and Bolivia's Highland Indians. The book also compares actions by governments and the groups themselves to overcome barriers to progress, including job quotas, boycotts, mass protests, and the unique kangaroo courts of Japan's Burakumim. Meerman's unusual cross-disciplinary approach and fascinating comparative studies of success and failure will appeal to scholars, development practitioners, and advocates working on issues of discrimination, poverty, equity and inequality in an ethnic context.

China's New Underclass - Paid Domestic Labour (Hardcover, New): Xinying Hu China's New Underclass - Paid Domestic Labour (Hardcover, New)
Xinying Hu
R4,589 Discovery Miles 45 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the implications of China's economic reforms for domestic work and domestic workers. The author examines the factors that give rise to paid domestic work in a socialist economy, and goes on to look at the need for social protection of domestic workers within cities in contemporary China.

Using a socialist feminist approach, the book investigates how China's economic restructuring has deliberately crafted a domestic service sector from the top-down. Through the analysis of the situation of paid domestic labour, it demonstrates how the changes in socialist ideology under a market economy have justified the state's support for paid domestic labour; the large role of the state in these ideological changes; and how domestic labour is related to economic changes and the market economy itself. The book argues that state's economic reforms have changed gender and class relations in Chinese society.

Based on interviews with domestic workers, their employers, their social advocates, and government officials, this book examines the economic and social security of domestic workers and provides information about their precarious working conditions that could be improved through public policy. It also explores women's agency and activism, and the current role of NGOs and trade unions in labour protection.
