The Economics of Advertising (RLE Advertising) (Paperback): Frederic Taylor The Economics of Advertising (RLE Advertising) (Paperback)
Frederic Taylor
R1,414 Discovery Miles 14 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What is the economic justification of advertising? Is it a vital energizing force in industry, or does it represent a serious waste of money and effort? The great increase in the volume of publicity in modern times is causing people to wonder what its final outcome will be, and whether it is a development to be welcomed or regarded with suspicion. First published in 1934.

Women, Labour and the Economy in India - From Migrant Menservants to Uprooted Girl Children Maids (Hardcover): Deepita... Women, Labour and the Economy in India - From Migrant Menservants to Uprooted Girl Children Maids (Hardcover)
Deepita Chakravarty, Ishita Chakravarty
R4,433 Discovery Miles 44 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The last available census estimated around 10 per cent of total urban working women in India are concentrated in the low paid domestic services such as cleaning, cooking, and taking care of the children and the elderly. This is found to be much higher in certain parts of India, emerging as the single most important avenue for urban females, surpassing males in the service since the 1980s. By applying an imaginative and refreshing mix of disciplinary approaches ranging from economic models of the household, empirical analysis and literary conventions, this book analyses the changing labour economy in post-partition West Bengal. It explains how and why women and girl children have replaced this traditionally male bias in the gender segregated domestic service industry since the late 1940s, and addresses the question of whether this increase in vulnerable individuals working in domestic service, the growth of the urban professional middle class in the post liberalization period, and the increasing incidences of reported abuses of domestics, in urban middleclass homes in the recent years, are related. Covering five decades of the history of gender and labour in India, this book will be of interest to scholars working in the fields of gender and labour relations, development studies, economics, history, and women and gender studies.

The Profit Paradox - How Thriving Firms Threaten the Future of Work (Hardcover): Jan Eeckhout The Profit Paradox - How Thriving Firms Threaten the Future of Work (Hardcover)
Jan Eeckhout
R590 Discovery Miles 5 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A pioneering account of the surging global tide of market power-and how it stifles workers around the world In an era of technological progress and easy communication, it might seem reasonable to assume that the world's working people have never had it so good. But wages are stagnant and prices are rising, so that everything from a bottle of beer to a prosthetic hip costs more. Economist Jan Eeckhout shows how this is due to a small number of companies exploiting an unbridled rise in market power-the ability to set prices higher than they could in a properly functioning competitive marketplace. Drawing on his own groundbreaking research and telling the stories of common workers throughout, he demonstrates how market power has suffocated the world of work, and how, without better mechanisms to ensure competition, it could lead to disastrous market corrections and political turmoil. The Profit Paradox describes how, over the past forty years, a handful of companies have reaped most of the rewards of technological advancements-acquiring rivals, securing huge profits, and creating brutally unequal outcomes for workers. Instead of passing on the benefits of better technologies to consumers through lower prices, these "superstar" companies leverage new technologies to charge even higher prices. The consequences are already immense, from unnecessarily high prices for virtually everything, to fewer startups that can compete, to rising inequality and stagnating wages for most workers, to severely limited social mobility. A provocative investigation into how market power hurts average working people, The Profit Paradox also offers concrete solutions for fixing the problem and restoring a healthy economy.

Workforce Development and Skill Formation in Asia (Paperback): John Benson, Howard Gospel, Ying Zhu Workforce Development and Skill Formation in Asia (Paperback)
John Benson, Howard Gospel, Ying Zhu
R1,588 Discovery Miles 15 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Asia has undergone rapid transformation over the past several decades as many countries have embraced new technologies and the processes of globalisation. Over this period the inflow of foreign capital into the region, the level of trade amongst these countries, and trade with other parts of the world has increased substantially. The ensuing economic growth has led to some significant changes in labour markets and the demand for skilled employees and their deployment within organisations. Focusing on a number of developed and developing Asian economies, this book explores the dynamics of workforce development and skill formation, and considers questions of both skills shortages and skills gaps. The book assesses the current state of training in the selected Asian economies, the weaknesses and strengths of their various training approaches, and what the present state of training means for the future economic development of these economies.

Unemployment in Ireland - Alternative Perspectives (Paperback): Charles Clark, Catherine Kavanagh Unemployment in Ireland - Alternative Perspectives (Paperback)
Charles Clark, Catherine Kavanagh
R1,044 Discovery Miles 10 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book contributes to the growing debate on the unemployment problem in Ireland. It is the first academic collection of papers on this issue and contains contributions from some of Ireland's most respected economists. David Blake
R357 Discovery Miles 3 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Full Employment in a Free Society (Works of William H. Beveridge) - A Report (Paperback): William H Beveridge Full Employment in a Free Society (Works of William H. Beveridge) - A Report (Paperback)
William H Beveridge
R1,418 Discovery Miles 14 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Beveridge defined full employment as a state where there are slightly more vacant jobs than there are available workers, or not more than 3% of the total workforce. This book discusses how this goal might be achieved, beginning with the thesis that because individual employers are not capable of creating full employment, it must be the responsibility of the state. Beveridge claimed that the upward pressure on wages, due to the increased bargaining strength of labour, would be eased by rising productivity, and kept in check by a system of wage arbitration. The cooperation of workers would be secured by the common interest in the ideal of full employment. Alternative measures for achieving full employment included Keynesian-style fiscal regulation, direct control of manpower, and state control of the means of production. The impetus behind Beveridge's thinking was social justice and the creation of an ideal new society after the war. The book was written in the context of an economy which would have to transfer from wartime direction to peace time. It was then updated in 1960, following a decade where the average unemployment rate in Britain was in fact nearly 1.5%.

A Beveridge Reader (Works of William H. Beveridge) (Paperback): Karel Williams, John Williams A Beveridge Reader (Works of William H. Beveridge) (Paperback)
Karel Williams, John Williams
R1,406 Discovery Miles 14 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The editors have chosen substantial extracts to illustrate the major themes and ideas in Beveridge's writing over a period of more than four decades, ranging from his book Unemployment, published in 1909, to the Beveridge Report of 1942 and beyond. Sections cover his social philosophy; the crucial role he attributed to social insurance as a technique of welfare; his relation to economics; and the stress he placed on voluntary action in a free society. Each theme is introduced by a full editorial commentary which explains its place in Beveridge's thought, as well as outlining his position and offering critical guidance to the reader. The return of mass unemployment and continuing debate on the role of the welfare state has revived interest in Beveridge's work and this reader brings his ideas.

Chris Wrigley
R3,514 Discovery Miles 35 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This authoritative history offers a major assessment of British industrial relations between the outbreak of the Second World War and the advent of Margaret Thatcher's government in 1979.Written by a group of leading specialists, this outstanding book examines the role of the government, the unions and employers, the influence of social welfare considerations on industrial relations policies and the patterns of strikes. Structural Funding and Employment in the European Union - Financing the Path to Integration (Hardcover): Jeffrey Harrop Structural Funding and Employment in the European Union - Financing the Path to Integration (Hardcover)
Jeffrey Harrop
R3,195 Discovery Miles 31 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This major new book assesses the role and effectiveness of structural funds in financing the path to integration in the European Union and especially in tackling unemployment. Structural Funding and Employment in the European Union combines an interdisciplinary approach with coverage of all the structural funds including the European Regional Development Fund, the European Social Fund, the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund (Guidance Section) and the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance. Empirical evidence is presented for the effectiveness of these funds and their success in increasing economic growth in certain areas and employment in others. The book also covers the relationship of these funds with the European Coal and Steel Community, the European Investment Bank and the Cohesion Fund. Jeffrey Harrop argues that the deepening and widening of the EU requires a stronger regional policy to ensure more effective use of structural funds, yet this remains a contentious area for the EU, member states and regional or local authorities. The author's authoritative and detailed discussion of this key policy issue, as well as his extensive experience of regional and EU policies, will ensure this book's welcome among students, teachers and researchers of European integration.

Culture, Capitals and Graduate Futures - Degrees of class (Hardcover): Ciaran Burke Culture, Capitals and Graduate Futures - Degrees of class (Hardcover)
Ciaran Burke
R3,684 Discovery Miles 36 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In a time of too many graduates for too few jobs, and in a context where applicants have similar levels of educational capital, what other factors influence graduate career trajectories? Based on the life history interviews of graduates and framed through a Bourdieusian sociological lens, Culture, Capitals and Graduate Futures explores the continuing role that social class as well as cultural and social capitals have on both the aspirations and expectations towards, and the trajectories within, the graduate labour market. Framed within the current context of increasing levels of university graduates and the falling numbers of graduate positions available in the UK labour market, this book provides a critical examination of the supposedly linear and meritocratic relationship between higher education and graduate employment proposed by official discourses from government at both local and national levels. Through a critical engagement with the empirical findings, Culture, Capitals and Graduate Futures asks important questions for the effective continuation of the widening participation agenda. This timely book will be of interest to higher education professionals working within widening participation policy and higher education policy.

The Changing Pattern of Employment - Regional Specialisation and Industrial Localisation in Britain (Hardcover): Michael... The Changing Pattern of Employment - Regional Specialisation and Industrial Localisation in Britain (Hardcover)
Michael Chisholm, Jim Oeppen
R3,222 Discovery Miles 32 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This title, first published in 1973, covers the period of 1959 to 1968. The study suggests that government policies had very little effect on the employment structures of the sub-regions at this time, despite government intervention and policy objectives in Great Britain to reduce levels of unemployment in the depressed regions and curb congestion in the Midland and South East England conurbations. Instead, regional employment structures seemed to be determined by what was happening to industries at a national level. This study will be of interest to economists, planners, regional scientists and geographers, as well as students in these fields.

New Trends in Intra-European Union Mobilities - Beyond Socio-Economic and Political Factors (Hardcover): Anastasia Bermudez,... New Trends in Intra-European Union Mobilities - Beyond Socio-Economic and Political Factors (Hardcover)
Anastasia Bermudez, Laura Oso
R4,137 Discovery Miles 41 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mobilities within the European Union (EU) have changed significantly since the classical intra-regional migrations of the 1950s-1970s. After a period of reduced, less visible flows in the 21st century mobilities increased again, first linked to EU expansion towards the East, and from 2008, with renewed South-North flows following the impact of the Great Recession on Southern European countries. It is in this context that the current volume explores how these recent migrations reflect new and more complex patterns of mobility, increasingly uncertain and unstable, involving both natives and naturalised migrants. It also seeks to unpack the multiple connections between these new migration systems and other systems affecting social protection, gender and citizenship, and how these intersect with other factors such as class, age, race and ethnicity. The different chapters of the book examine this covering a wide variety of cases, including intra-EU flows from Portugal and Spain, recent Spanish and Latin American migrants in London, Paris and Brussels, and Romanian migration to the UK and France, thus adding to its richness. This book will be of interest to academics, researchers and advanced students of Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, Gender Studies, Public Policy, and Politics. It was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

The Peasant in Economic Thought - 'A Perfect Republic' (Hardcover): Evelyn L. Forget, Richard A. Lobdell The Peasant in Economic Thought - 'A Perfect Republic' (Hardcover)
Evelyn L. Forget, Richard A. Lobdell
R2,998 Discovery Miles 29 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The role of the peasant has been a major theme for agricultural economists throughout the ages. 'Irrational' decision-making among peasants was as likely to worry scholars in medieval Islam as in twentieth-century Brazil or eighteenth-century France. The efficiency of smallholdings as units of production was as important in nineteenth-century Germany and Mexico as in twentieth-century India and sub-Saharan Africa. In The Peasant in Economic Thought, a distinguished group of scholars examines the role of the peasant in agricultural economies from a variety of cultural and disciplinary perspectives. Beginning with a paper on the peasant proprietor in classical economics, the volume continues with work on Friedrich List, Thomas Robert Malthus and Thomas Chalmers, J.S. Mill and the Hutterites of Manitoba, rent in Fabian economics, and the peasant in nineteenth century Mexican liberal thought. Later papers focus on the Brazilian peasantry in nineteenth century economic thought, land in Medieval Islamic thought and decision-making in contemporary African peasant households. Economists, historians and environmentalists trace lines of influence - centring on John Stuart Mill's liberalism and Auguste Comte's positivism - which affected debate in England, Latin America, Canada, India and sub-Saharan Africa.

Unemployment, Imperfect Competition and Macroeconomics - Essays in the Post Keynesian Tradition (Hardcover): Malcolm Sawyer Unemployment, Imperfect Competition and Macroeconomics - Essays in the Post Keynesian Tradition (Hardcover)
Malcolm Sawyer
R3,508 Discovery Miles 35 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This collection of Malcolm Sawyer's essays develops the post Keynesian analyses of unemployment, imperfect competition and macroeconomics. This important volume focuses on the causes of unemployment, a central concern of contemporary post Keynesian economics whose origins can be dated from the response to the high levels of unemployment during the 1930s. After explaining why conventional economic analysis cannot properly comprehend the phenomenon of unemployment, Professor Sawyer's book explores the relationship between demand-side and supply-side causes and argues for the relevance of both for the analysis of unemployment. Other issues discussed include the relationship between macroeconomics and imperfect competition, the post Keynesian approach to pricing and post Keynesian perspectives on industrial economics. Unemployment, Imperfect Competition and Macroeconomics, critically but sympathetically, evaluates and extends the contribution of post Keynesian analysis, and discusses the problems which those analyses face. Bringing together contributions from a major scholar working in this field, the book will be welcomed by all those interested in the post Keynesian approach and the contributions it can make to economic analysis.

Decent Work, Green Jobs and the Sustainable Economy - Solutions for Climate Change and Sustainable Development (Hardcover):... Decent Work, Green Jobs and the Sustainable Economy - Solutions for Climate Change and Sustainable Development (Hardcover)
Peter Poschen
R4,133 Discovery Miles 41 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The challenges of achieving environmental sustainability and of generating decent work for all are closely linked. In this timely book, Poschen argues that an integrated approach to tackle these challenges is a necessity: the goal of environmentally sustainable economies will not be attained without the active contribution of the world of work. Decent Work, Green Jobs and the Sustainable Economy demonstrates that green jobs can be a key economic driver, as the world steps into the largely uncharted territory of building a sustainable and low-carbon global economy. Poschen shows that positive outcomes are possible, but require a clear understanding of the opportunities and challenges.Enterprises, workers and governments are not passive bystanders in the great transformation that is urgently needed in our economies. They are essential agents of change, able to develop new ways of working in sustainable enterprises that safeguard the environment, create decent jobs and foster social inclusion. This book highlights the solutions that the world of work offers for policy and practice to tackle climate change, achieve environmental sustainability and to build prosperous and cohesive societies. It is essential reading for those in business, aca demia and government.

New Directions in the Study of Work and Employment - Revitalizing Industrial Relations as an Academic Enterprise (Hardcover):... New Directions in the Study of Work and Employment - Revitalizing Industrial Relations as an Academic Enterprise (Hardcover)
Charles J. Whalen
R3,205 Discovery Miles 32 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Charles Whalen's book identifies avenues leading to the revitalization of industrial relations as an academic discipline. The contributors, a stellar assemblage of the field's leading scholars, demonstrate there is much work to be done: the scope and intellectual content of industrial relations need to be reconsidered; academic and social institutions must be reshaped; and new conceptual and practical issues demand attention. The contributors to this volume examine a broad range of issues. Some chapters explore the conceptual boundaries and core assumptions of the field. Others probe how industrial relations correlates with social capital, the law and globalization. Still others outline new approaches to academic programs and institutions, labor and employment journals, and the integration of teaching and community service. A wrap-up chapter by MIT's Thomas Kochan ties all this together and presents additional insights on the revitalization of the field. Industrial relations scholars, labor studies, sociology and business professors as well as many practitioners will find much to recommend in this book.
