This book provides an integrative approach for the management and care of the arthritis patient. Many different psychological, social, and behavioral factors have been shown to affect the quality of life of arthritis patients beyond the effects of the disease and the response to medications and treatments. The book establishes a biopsychosocial framework for understanding the interplay between psychological and physical aspects of rheumatic disease and summarizes the research about the psychosocial aspects that affect patients with arthritis, including stress, social support, doctor-patient communication, and sleep patterns. It explores the practice of incorporating psychological and behavioral approaches in the rheumatology clinic in order to surmount the problems of access and enhance the quality of care, promotes a comprehensive perspective on the numerous issues affecting persons with arthritis, and provides clinical guidelines for management. Psychosocial Factors in Arthritis is a valuable resource for behavioral medicine researchers, behavioral clinicians, and a range of arthritis professionals, including rheumatologists, nurses, and other allied health service practitioners.

Shoulder and Elbow Trauma and its Complications - Volume 1: The Shoulder (Hardcover): Michael Greiwe Shoulder and Elbow Trauma and its Complications - Volume 1: The Shoulder (Hardcover)
Michael Greiwe
R5,044 Discovery Miles 50 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Traumatic injuries to the shoulder remain a problem encountered by young and old alike. Trauma surgeons and shoulder and elbow specialists are called upon daily to improve the quality of life of injured individuals by restoring function, decreasing pain and returning individuals to their previous occupations and places in society. Such treatment provides both humanitarian and economic impact. Only recently have techniques and technology allowed surgeons to restore lives to such a degree following these injuries. Still, shoulder and elbow trauma remains a vexing problem for patients and surgeons alike. Many injuries result in lost work and serious debility including lack of function, post-traumatic arthritis and pain. This important textbook provides a systematic and comprehensive guide to the different types of shoulder trauma and the management of its associated complications. In Part One, the focus is on the most common types of shoulder trauma, with chapters covering anterior instability, traumatic rotator cuff tears, fractures, joint injuries and the floating shoulder and includes sections on the most common complications befalling each injury. Part II then reviews the management of the most common complications. Chapters include detailed analyses of persistent anterior shoulder instability, several forms of nonunion and malunion, failed acromioclavicular joint reconstruction, post-traumatic arthropathy and traumatic osteonecrosis, and failed arthroplasty for fracture.

Marfan Syndrome - A Primer for Clinicians and Scientists (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): Peter N Robinson, Maurice Godfrey Marfan Syndrome - A Primer for Clinicians and Scientists (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Peter N Robinson, Maurice Godfrey
R4,027 Discovery Miles 40 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Historical Introduction The Marfan Syndrome: From Clinical Delineation to Mutational Characterization, a Semiautobiographic Account VictorA. McKusick l n 1876, E. Williams, an ophthalmologistin Cincinnati, Ohio, described ectopia lentis in a brother and sister who were exceptionally tall and had been loosejointed from birth. I Although there is a Williams syndrome that has aortic manifestations (supravalvar aortic stenosis), the name Williams was never associated with the disorder we now call Marfan syndrome. The reason is clear: Williamswas geographically removed from the leading medical centers and published in the Transactions of the American Ophthalmological Society; surely his report attracted little attention and the non-ocular features were not emphasized. 2 The case report that brought the disorder to attention was provided by a prominent Pari- sian professor of pediatrics, Antoine Bernard-Jean Marfan (1858-1942), who did much to establish pediatrics as a specialty in France and elsewhere. He was the author of widely read textbooks and monographson pediatrictopics and waseditor of Le Nourrisson for a great many years. In addition to the syndromeunder discussion here, his name is often attached to "Marfan's law" (that immunity to pulmonary phthisis is conferred by the healing of a local tuberculous 3 lesion) and Marfan's subxiphoid approach for aspiratingfluid from the pericardial sac. (Please pardon my use of the possessive form of the eponym in these two instances!) Pictures of Marfan (Fig.

Back function has recently been studied from a broader perspective, including the analysis of the coupled function in spine, pelvis and legs. These approaches lead to new questions about dynamic stability and motor control in general, and specifically about the spine and pelvis. These new insights obviously imply new approaches in the prevention and treatment of low back pain and pelvic pain. Unique to this book is its in-depth coverage of this subject area by a team of international contributors who represent the broad range of professionals involved in clinical research and therapy. These experts cover a vast area of lumbopelvic experience, from effective treatment and rehabilitation to epidemiology, anatomy, biomechanics, pain and motor control, surgery and manual therapy. Fascial and Membrane Technique - A manual for comprehensive treatment of the connective tissue system (Paperback): Peter Schwind Fascial and Membrane Technique - A manual for comprehensive treatment of the connective tissue system (Paperback)
Peter Schwind; Foreword by Thomas W Myers, Jean-Pierre Barral
R1,132 Discovery Miles 11 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Fascial and Membrane Technique developed by Peter Schwind combines the fundamental thoughts from Ida Rolfs Structural Integration with concepts of Osteopathy. With this a successful combination of form-stabilising and mobilising techniques has emerged. Due to this holistic approach the concept will appeal to all manual working therapists. The main emphasis of this book is on diagnostic and treatment of the breathing patterns manifest in the myofascial system; minimalistic as well as global application joint techniques; visceral techniques in the myofascial context; and special treatment techniques in the craniosacral area, eg for mandibular joint dysfunction, care of the upper jaw after implants and for the after effects of a whiplash injury. Includes comprehensive information on therapy from head to foot with descriptions of the anatomic correlations. Clearly describes the theoretical and practical principles so difficult concepts are easily understandable. Detailed, easily transposed instructions about treatments allow the reader to put the concepts into practice with ease. Photographically documented movements show real examples of topics discussed.
