In the two decades since this book was first published, diagnoses of this disease have exploded. Most patients with fibromyalgia are on as astonishing array of medications--sometimes taking over 10 different medications and supplements a day to treat symptoms ranging from muscle pain and fatigue to hypoglycemia, IBS, and chronic candidiasis--and they still can't control their pain. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia is still the only protocol that actually treats the condition, reduces drug dependency, and offers an actual cure. The fourth edition goes deeper into understanding the disease and the early intervention options that are available. With special attention paid to fatigue and pain management, Dr. St. Armand goes into great detail about the big issues surrounding fibromyalgia today, including: A close look at supplements, including CBS oil--an unregulated market without the same scientific rigor as most medicationsGuaifenesin as a drug that does work, eliminating symptoms and restoring normal life to an astonishing 90 percent of the fibromyalgia sufferersA discussion of pharmaceuticals in treatment, and why "medical Band-Aids" won't treat the disease

A unique perspective on neuroendoscopic versus microsurgical techniques from world-renowned neurosurgeons In the last two decades, neuroendoscopy has evolved from a fringe neurosurgical tool to an established subspecialty focusing on the treatment of diverse cranial and spinal diseases. Today, neuroendoscopic technology is widely used to treat supratentorial diseases, skull base pathologies, craniocervical diseases, and spinal pathologies. Despite the expanded use of neuroendoscopy across several subspecialties, its benefits and disadvantages versus those of traditional microsurgical methods remain highly controversial. Contradictory evidence in the neurosurgical literature adds to the surgical decision-making challenges for veteran and novice practitioners alike. Controversies in Neuroendoscopy by Peter Nakaji and Hasan Zaidi fills an unmet need for a book encompassing best practices, patient selection, and limitations and advantages of neuroendoscopic surgical approaches. Each case presents firsthand knowledge of internationally esteemed neurosurgeons, with a moderator, an endoscopic expert, and an expert in traditional microsurgical approaches. The unique discussion of neuroendoscopy versus microsurgery enables readers to compare the benefits and pitfalls of endoscopic and open microsurgical procedures for a wide range of conditions. In-depth comparative guidance on applications of the flexible endoscope, rigid endoscope, 3D endoscope, and high-definition 2D endoscope versus the microscope A full spectrum of neurological conditions across the age continuum with comparative approaches for skull base surgery, pituitary surgery, hydrocephalus, spinal surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, and arachnoid cyst fenestration Radiological imaging and intraoperative photographs enhance cases and provide precise, insightful technical guidance High-quality color illustrations from the skilled medical illustrators at Barrow Neurological Institute reinforce key points and surgical techniques Neurosurgery residents, neurosurgeons, and spine surgeons will all benefit from reading this remarkable book cover to cover, and they will no doubt use it as a go-to resource for specific cases. This book includes complimentary access to a digital copy on https://medone.thieme.com.
Almost 21 million people in the United States are afflicted by osteoarthritis and it accounts for nearly 25% of all visits to primary care physicians. Moreover, close to 50% of those 65 and older will develop symptoms of this disorder This issue of Medical Clinics examines the clinically important aspects of osteoarthritis and features articles on the following topics: epidemiology; etiopathogenesis; the role of bone and meniscus in disease genesis; genetics; joint mechanics; symptoms, imaging; overview of management; obesity and management of body weight; the role of muscle in disease genesis; use of orthotic devices; the role of analgesics and intra-articular injections in disease management; potential pharmacologic treatments; and surgical interventions.
The book is divided into 5 sections: the first and second sections provide introductory topics, such as anatomical variances of the articulations and soft tissues, the biomechanics of the shoulder, diagnostic imaging, specialist and functional examinations. The third section is dedicated to the description of surgical solutions in acute articular, muscle and tendinous pathologies. Rehabilitation and prevention are described in the fourth section, where the authors present exercises of post-surgical rehabilitation, techniques of mobilizing in manual therapy and load multidimensional model. The last two chapters in this section are dedicated to prevention, especially of chronic pathologies, using intervention influencing programmes, methodology of training and how to rectify incorrectly performed movements. The last section is dedicated to the use of electromyography of the surface. This method is used to register muscular activity during training; the description contains practical information and a great number of references of clinical interest.

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body. It enjoys an amazing range of motion; it can rotate 360 degrees and can extend upward, sideways, across the body, outward, inward, every which way. That makes it the most useful joint we have, and, not surprisingly, we use it the most. Lifting, pushing, pulling, throwing, catching, hugging: the shoulder experiences more motion than any other joint. So it is perhaps not surprising that, sooner or later, it becomes overtaxed-fatigued. After all, as with anything, if you keep applying the same pressure over and over, the strength and stability of the structure being pressured will wear down. That's what happens to the shoulder, and when it does, it's not only painful; it can also stop you in your tracks, limiting your ability to do even simple things you're used to doing. The truth is that if you've never felt any kind of shoulder pain whatsoever, the chances are good that as you grow older, you will. Our bodies tend to lose muscle and bone mass as we age, and we become more susceptible to the aches and pains that may result. But neither the weakness nor the pain is inevitable. The shoulder can be fixed, and the pain can go away. First, there's a fix that cures the weakness and ends the pain. But there are also things you can do to prevent injury or strain in the first place, so that you never have to lose the strength, stability, and range of motion of the shoulder at all. Fix My Shoulder explores the anatomy and function of the shoulder, methods of preventing pain and injury, and treatments for healing that anyone can implement for better shoulder health and function. |
