This book is designed to act as an off-the-shelf guide to assist health care providers evaluating patients presenting with common musculoskeletal complaints in the primary care setting. The result of a $750,000 research grant that studied how comfortable primary care providers felt when treating musculoskeletal conditions, this book addresses the common finding that family physcians felt unprepared despite frequently seeing these types of complaints. Since the primary care physician operates in a different environment than an orthopedic surgeon, the approach to the patient presenting in the primary care clinic must also differ from the specialist's approach. This book has been divided into chapters covering major body regions and injuries, and each chapter includes: Red flags, which are conditions requiring immediate treatment and referral; basic anatomy of the body region; Clinical evaluation techniques and tear sheets for use during examination; Common clinical diagnoses; and disposition of the patient illustrated with helpful flow charts.

Osteoporosis is a growing major public health problem that impacts many women and men. In the US alone, it is estimated that 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and another 34 million have low bone mass. Both of these conditions put patients at increased risk for fracture. This book takes a "generalist" approach to the challenge of osteoporosis. It is aimed at those specialists, in particular gynecologists, who have regular clinical contact with particularly prone populations, such as menopausal and post menopausal women, who do not have the need for in-depth knowledge of the subject.
Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) and related diseases called
spondyloarthropathies (SpA) are the second most common form of
chronic inflammatory arthritis after Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).
Unfortunately, most patients with AS and SpA are either never
diagnosed, or they are inadequately treated. The current mean delay
in the diagnosis of AS ranges from 5 to 10 years, and the
presenting clinical manifestations of these diseases are
wide-ranging and heterogeneous, and thus a variety of health care
professionals see AS and SpA patients, from primary care physicians
to rheumatologists and other medical and surgical specialists.
Lupus is an extremely common, potentially treatable, disease of the immune system. It affects approximately 1 in 1000 women and is more common than diseases such as multiple sclerosis and leukaemia. Despite this, there is little information concerning the disease in contrast to other illnesses of similar prevalence. Many people are unaware of the symptoms, treatment, and prevention of lupus. It is important that these topics are highlighted for many reasons. For example, a greater understanding of the symptoms of lupus will enable patients to recognise the symptoms earlier, and get treatment faster; before any serious damage is done. Similarly, awareness of preventative measures may reduce the number of cases of lupus that occur. From a different perspective, it would be of great use to have an easily accessible source of information available to lupus patients that would highlight issues such as treatment options and sources of support. In summary, although knowledge of lupus is growing, greater awareness of the disease amongst both patients and the general public is an issue that needs to be addressed.

This book is a simple case-by-case approach to the many different types of orthopaedic fractures. The book is being written for residents, registrars, newly qualified doctors and medical students, primarily targeted to those in the fields of diagnostic radiology, orthopaedic surgery and emergency medicine. There are a variety of texts that exist in these fields to assist in acquiring knowledge; however, there lacks a text that provides simple images and explanations from which a fundamental base of skeletal trauma can be formed. Some of the standard textbooks are still too advanced and lack the basic knowledge. This book is divided into sections by anatomic location, each containing a number of cases presented as unknowns. A standard template is utilised for each case, including a brief clinical description, physical examination, followed by radiological images. The reader is then asked to interpret the plain films given. Several questions are then asked, including the most likely diagnosis and followed by brief discussions on radiological findings (with appropriate annotated images, as necessary) and clinical management. Finally, the case is concluded with a summary of key points. With this format readers can test their knowledge on important orthopaedic fractures as seen on a plain film. Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders have a high prevalence and are one of the main reasons for patients to consult with a provider. For a range of issues from injury to back pain to rheumatic disease, musculoskeletal pathology is the second most common reason for a patient to see a primary care provider. However, despite their prevalence and significant socioeconomic impact, musculoskeletal disorders are relatively undertaught in medical schools in the United States. While all medical, nursing and physician assistant students receive exposure to some MSK content, in many medical schools this material does not receive curricular exposure commensurate with its prevalence.
