Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Skeletal Regeneration (Paperback, New): Peter Giannoudis, Elena Jones, Xuebin Yang, Dennis McGonagle Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Skeletal Regeneration (Paperback, New)
Peter Giannoudis, Elena Jones, Xuebin Yang, Dennis McGonagle
R964 Discovery Miles 9 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book covers our current understanding of the role of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and other mesenchymal progenitors in skeletal regeneration, encompassing bone, cartilage and whole joint regeneration. The expansion reflects developments in the field to include data on the use of MSCs in drug development, growth factors, scaffolds and biomechanical manipulations for skeletal trauma and diseases, including osteoporosis and arthritis.

Written for an audience of clinicians and young researchers who are exposed to MSCs in their work, this work summarizes recent findings pertaining to the definition and characterization of MSCs in skeletal tissues and discusses the mechanisms of their actions in regeneration of bone in vivo. The authors describe recent findings pertaining to the efficacy of MSC therapies in animal models and in human clinical trials and bring together literature showing that the ways MSCs are extracted, expanded and implanted can considerably affect bone formation outcomes. Finally, it presents the latest knowledge on the nature of native MSCs in skeletal tissues, which provide a platform for novel in situ tissue regeneration approaches for systemic bone disease such as osteoporosis.
Focuses specifically on the use of stem cells in skeletal tissue generation for a broad audience of stem cell, cancer, and bone biologists, orthopedists, oncologists, and regenerative medicine specialistsProvides a short historical detour and foundational information on founding concepts, discoveries and personalities in MSC researchAssists a new generation of scientists and clinicians in digesting the multitude of journal articles on the topic by providing easily-absorbed and condensed foundational context"

Electromyography - New Developments, Procedures & Applications (Hardcover): Hiroki Takada Electromyography - New Developments, Procedures & Applications (Hardcover)
Hiroki Takada
R4,062 Discovery Miles 40 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Italian physician L Galvani demonstrated the relationship between electricity and muscle contraction that occurs in the electric fluid carried to the muscles by the nerves. He coined the term animal electricity to describe the muscle-activating force. One hundred and fifty years after he determined that muscle activation is generated by an electric fluid carried by the nerves, mathematician N. Wiener studied an artificial hand controlled by an electrical current produced in the muscles. This book discusses new developments, procedures and applications of electromyography.

Skeletal Muscle Circulation (Paperback): Ronald Korthuis Skeletal Muscle Circulation (Paperback)
Ronald Korthuis
R1,301 Discovery Miles 13 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The aim of this treatise is to summarize the current understanding of the mechanisms for blood flow control to skeletal muscle under resting conditions, how perfusion is elevated (exercise hyperemia) to meet the increased demand for oxygen and other substrates during exercise, mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of regular physical activity on cardiovascular health, the regulation of transcapillary fluid filtration and protein flux across the microvascular exchange vessels, and the role of changes in the skeletal muscle circulation in pathologic states. Skeletal muscle is unique among organs in that its blood flow can change over a remarkably large range. Compared to blood flow at rest, muscle blood flow can increase by more than 20-fold on average during intense exercise, while perfusion of certain individual white muscles or portions of those muscles can increase by as much as 80-fold. This is compared to maximal increases of 4- to 6-fold in the coronary circulation during exercise. These increases in muscle perfusion are required to meet the enormous demands for oxygen and nutrients by the active muscles. Because of its large mass and the fact that skeletal muscles receive 25% of the cardiac output at rest, sympathetically mediated vasoconstriction in vessels supplying this tissue allows central hemodynamic variables (e.g., blood pressure) to be spared during stresses such as hypovolemic shock. Sympathetic vasoconstriction in skeletal muscle in such pathologic conditions also effectively shunts blood flow away from muscles to tissues that are more sensitive to reductions in their blood supply that might otherwise occur. Again, because of its large mass and percentage of cardiac output directed to skeletal muscle, alterations in blood vessel structure and function with chronic disease (e.g., hypertension) contribute significantly to the pathology of such disorders. Alterations in skeletal muscle vascular resistance and/or in the exchange properties of this vascular bed also modify transcapillary fluid filtration and solute movement across the microvascular barrier to influence muscle function and contribute to disease pathology. Finally, it is clear that exercise training induces an adaptive transformation to a protected phenotype in the vasculature supplying skeletal muscle and other tissues to promote overall cardiovascular health. Table of Contents: Introduction / Anatomy of Skeletal Muscle and Its Vascular Supply / Regulation of Vascular Tone in Skeletal Muscle / Exercise Hyperemia and Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation During Muscular Activity / Microvascular Fluid and Solute Exchange in Skeletal Muscle / Skeletal Muscle Circulation in Aging and Disease States: Protective Effects of Exercise / References

Role of Muscle Strength in Hamstring Injury (Paperback): Kieran O'Sullivan, Cian McGinley Role of Muscle Strength in Hamstring Injury (Paperback)
Kieran O'Sullivan, Cian McGinley
R1,314 Discovery Miles 13 140 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Hamstring injuries are very common in a variety of sports requiring repeated acceleration, deceleration, sprinting, or in kicking activities. Hamstring injuries account for a significant percentage of injuries per season among athletes in many different sports. This rate of injury is highlighted by the amount of competitive action or training time missed by players. A particular frustration with hamstring strain is the high recurrence rate, which is often associated with even longer absences from competition. In fact, even after returning to competitive action, athletes remain at a significantly increased risk of recurrence for the remainder of the season. Unfortunately, despite the frequency of the injury and considerable ongoing research, there is still much that is unknown about hamstring injury. Hamstring injury is a multifactorial injury, with many suggested contributing factors, one of which is muscle weakness. It is common practice for athletes to incorporate muscle strengthening into their exercise programmes to reduce the risk of hamstring injury. This book discusses the role of muscle strength in the prevention and rehabilitation of hamstring injury, based on a review of the current research evidence.

All of the most frequently encountered musculoskeletal conditions are included, from physical injuries to tumors to infectious diseases. Over 2,100 images include radiographs, radionuclide studies, CT scans, and MR images, illustrating pathologies and comparing them with other disorders in the same region. Organization by anatomic region addresses common afflictions for each region in separate chapters, so you can see how a particular region looks when affected by one condition as compared to its appearance with other conditions. Coverage of each body region includes normal developmental anatomy, fractures, deformities, dislocations, infections, hematologic disorders, and more. Normal Developmental Anatomy sections open each chapter, describing important developmental landmarks in various regions of the body from birth to skeletal maturity.
