Exploring the Buddhist/Taoist concept of non-doing and intention in relation to bodywork, this book focuses on how the therapist should approach their client without agenda and meet them where they are at. This requires the therapist to pay attention to their own surfacing intentions and leave assumptions behind so they may focus on simply 'being', which is a profoundly active, non-reactive expression of presence, rather than a passive state of resignation. The ramifications of sub-conscious doing and wilful intention can negatively impact expressions of health and so the author explains how therapists may skilfully navigate between intention, attention and embodied non-doing whilst treating clients, and how this creates the foundations for safe relational touch.
Research into metabolic bone disease has made remarkable
progress over the last 20 years, with the identification of
numerous new molecules and pathways regulating bone cells as well
as their plasma milieu. Their activities are largely regulated by
the physiological status of the body incorporating the biochemical,
physical and mechanical functions of bone, kidney and intestinal
tissues. The Physiological Basis of Metabolic Bone Disease
integrates the knowledge derived from molecular techniques with the
fundamental principles of the physiology of these organs.
Research on bone remodeling has resulted in much new information and has led to improvements in design and biomedical practices. Mechanics of Cellular Bone Remodeling: Coupled Thermal, Electrical, and Mechanical Field Effects presents a unified exploration of recent advances, giving readers a sound understanding of bone remodeling and its mathematical representation. Beginning with a description of the basic concept of bone remodeling from a mathematical point of view, the book details the development of each of the techniques and ideas. From there it progresses to the derivation and construction of multifield and cellular bone remodeling and shows how they arise naturally in response to external multifield loads. Topics include: Fundamental concepts and basic formulations for bone remodeling Applications of formulations to multifield internal bone remodeling of inhomogeneous long cylindrical bone Theory and solution of multifield surface bone remodeling A hypothetical regulation mechanism on growth factors for bone modeling and remodeling under multifield loading The RANK-RANKL-OPG pathway and formulation for analyzing the bone remodeling process A model of bone cell population dynamics for cortical bone remodeling under mechanical and pulsed electromagnetic stimulus Recent developments in experiments with bone materials Readers will benefit from the thorough coverage of general principles for each topic, followed by detailed mathematical derivations and worked examples, as well as tables and figures where appropriate. The book not only serves as a reliable reference but is also destined to attract interested readers and researchers to a field that offers fascinating and technologically important challenges.
This book arose from a request by Ron Landes of Landes Bioscience for a book on the role of the sarcomere in human skeletal muscle diseases following our article "When contractile proteins go bad: The sarcomere and skeletal muscle disease" in BioEssays in 2005 (Vol 27, pages 809-822). The sarcomere is also the basis of heart diseases, but the remit of this book is skeletal muscle diseases alone. A number of the chapters in the book provide an up-to-date review of diseases caused by mutated proteins in the different sub-compartments of the sarcomere, others document the techniques currently being used to investigate the pathobiological bases of the diseases, which remain largely unknown, with finally discussion of possible routes to therapies. The book is intended to provide a snapshot of this rapidly moving field. I thank all the authors who responded positively to my request to provide chapters in their particular areas of expertise, with many of the chapters thus written by the discoverers of the diseases being described. Hopefully the book might generate interest in young scientists to participate in this field of research, in particular to take up the challenge of trying to develop effective treatments for these diseases caused by dysfunction of the fundamental unit of muscle contraction, the sarcomere.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a technique used in biomedical imaging and radiology to visualize internal structures of the body. Because MRI provides excellent contrast between different soft tissues, the technique is especially useful for diagnostic imaging of the brain, muscles, and heart. In the past 20 years, MRI technology has improved significantly with the introduction of systems up to 7 Tesla (7 T) and with the development of numerous post-processing algorithms such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), functional MRI (fMRI), and spectroscopic imaging. From these developments, the diagnostic potentialities of MRI have improved impressively with an exceptional spatial resolution and the possibility of analyzing the morphology and function of several kinds of pathology. Given these exciting developments, the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Handbook: Imaging of the Pelvis, Musculoskeletal System, and Special Applications to CAD is a timely addition to the growing body of literature in the field. Offering comprehensive coverage of cutting-edge imaging modalities, this book: Discusses MRI of the urinary system, pelvis, spine, soft tissues, lymphatics, and brain Explains how MRI can be used in fetal, pediatric, forensic, postmortem, and computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) applications Highlights each organ's anatomy and pathological processes with high-quality images Examines the protocols and potentialities of advanced MRI scanners such as 7 T systems Includes extensive references at the end of each chapter to enhance further study Thus, the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Handbook: Imaging of the Pelvis, Musculoskeletal System, and Special Applications to CAD provides radiologists and imaging specialists with a valuable, state-of-the-art reference on MRI.
"[Dr. Maigne's] neuoranatomical explanations are brilliantly illustrated and documented with a profound review of the literature. ...The benefit he has given patients who have come from all over the world for his services affirms the benefit of his method." From the First Edition foreword by, -Rene Cailliet, M.D. Professor Emeritus, School of Medicine of the University of Southern California Over the course of fifty years, Dr. Robert Maigne has built up an international reputation for his pioneering work with spinal-related pain. In the two decades since this book was first published, diagnoses of this disease have exploded. Most patients with fibromyalgia are on as astonishing array of medications--sometimes taking over 10 different medications and supplements a day to treat symptoms ranging from muscle pain and fatigue to hypoglycemia, IBS, and chronic candidiasis--and they still can't control their pain. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia is still the only protocol that actually treats the condition, reduces drug dependency, and offers an actual cure. The fourth edition goes deeper into understanding the disease and the early intervention options that are available. With special attention paid to fatigue and pain management, Dr. St. Armand goes into great detail about the big issues surrounding fibromyalgia today, including: A close look at supplements, including CBS oil--an unregulated market without the same scientific rigor as most medicationsGuaifenesin as a drug that does work, eliminating symptoms and restoring normal life to an astonishing 90 percent of the fibromyalgia sufferersA discussion of pharmaceuticals in treatment, and why "medical Band-Aids" won't treat the disease

The foundation of chiropractic care has always been the relationship between the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. The understanding of this relationship has become more and more sophisticated to such an extent that we now realize that the integrity of the human frame and it's ability to move as designed can have implications in pain perception, muscle control, coordination, sleep, internal organ function, and immune response. This book provides an in-depth review of the ways in which abnormal movement in the musculoskeletal system (particularly the spine) will result in altered nervous system function and the potential for poor health.
Providing the most up-to-date research and current clinical knowledge of diabetic bone disease and the challenges still facing the research and clinical care communities, this book unites insights from endocrinology and orthopedics to create a truly unique text. The first part covers clinical and pre-clinical applications and research. The first two chapters present the clinical and epidemiological data about diabetic bone disease, evaluated and reviewed for type 1 and type 2, respectively. This is followed by discussions of how the propensity to fracture in diabetic bone disease can impact fracture risk assessments and how it can be adjusted for using current clinically relevant fracture risk models. A comprehensive overview of orthopedic complications observed in diabetes is next, as well as a focus on the consequences of diabetes on periodontal disease. Other topics include the utility of skeletal biomarkers in assessing diabetic bone disease, how drugs used to treat diabetes may also have skeletal consequences, and the possibility that diabetes may fundamentally impact early progenitor cells of various bone lineages and thus globally impact bone. The second part covers biomechanics and bone quality in diabetes: how diabetes ultimately may impact the architecture, integrity, and quality of bone. Utilizing the expertise of top researcher and clinicians in diabetic bone disease in one comprehensive text, this volume will be a useful and thought-provoking resource for endocrinologists and orthopedic surgeons alike.
