Game of Mirrors: Centre-Periphery National Conflicts (Paperback): Francisco Letamendia Game of Mirrors: Centre-Periphery National Conflicts (Paperback)
Francisco Letamendia
R1,174 Discovery Miles 11 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This title was first published in 2000. Nationalism and the national question have represented a problem since the early years of the 19th century. Understanding these phenomena represents a challenge for political science, because "the nation" is not a natural phenomenon, rather it is the consequence of nationalism. Attempts to reduce nationalism to one or several factors have been unsuccessful; it has multiple factors that are variable in space and time. Nationalism is a problem of beliefs and conscience linked to the historical action of nationalist groups. A second difficulty derives from the distinction between nationalism of the dominant and nationalism of the oppressed. The majority of political theorists now believe that these centre and periphery nationalisms are different and therefore adversaries. Using first-hand experience of Basque separatism as a starting point, the author adds to it with the main manifestations of this phenomenon around the world.

Hong Kong, China - Learning to belong to a nation (Hardcover, New): Gordon Mathews, Eric Ma, Tai-lok Lui Hong Kong, China - Learning to belong to a nation (Hardcover, New)
Gordon Mathews, Eric Ma, Tai-lok Lui
R4,772 Discovery Miles 47 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The idea of 'national identity' is an ambiguous one for Hong Kong. Returned to the national embrace of China on 1 July 1997 after 150 years as a British colony, the concept of national identity and what it means to "belong to a nation" is a matter of great tension and contestation in Hong Kong. Written by three academic specialists on Hong Kong cultural identity, social history, and mass media, this book explores the processes through which the people of Hong Kong are "learning to belong to a nation" by examining their relationship with the Chinese nation and state in the recent past, present, and future. It considers the complex meanings of and debates over national identity in Hong Kong over the past fifty years and especially during the last decade following Hong Kong's return to China. It also places these arguments within a larger, global perspective, to ask what Hong Kong can teach us about national identity and its potential transformations. Multidisciplinary in its approach, Hong Kong and China explores national identity in terms of theory, mass media, survey date, ethnography and history, and will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese history, cultural studies, and nationalism.

At the Roots of Italian Identity - 'Race' and 'Nation' in the Italian Risorgimento, 1796-1870 (Hardcover):... At the Roots of Italian Identity - 'Race' and 'Nation' in the Italian Risorgimento, 1796-1870 (Hardcover)
Edoardo Marcello Barsotti
R4,493 Discovery Miles 44 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates the relationship between the ideas of nation and race among the nationalist intelligentsia of the Italian Risorgimento and argues that ideas of race played a considerable role in defining Italian national identity. The author argues that the racialization of the Italians dates back to the early Napoleonic age and that naturalistic racialism-or race-thinking based on the taxonomies of the natural history of man-emerged well before the traditionally presumed date of the late 1860s and the advent of positivist anthropology. The book draws upon a wide number of sources including the work of Vincenzo Cuoco, Giuseppe Micali, Adriano Balbi, Alessanro Manzoni, Giandomenico Romagnosi, Cesare Balbo, Vincenzo Gioberti, and Carlo Cattaneo. Themes explored include links to antiquity on the Italian peninsula, archaeology, and race-thinking.

Football, Place and National Identity - Transferring Allegiance (Hardcover): David Storey Football, Place and National Identity - Transferring Allegiance (Hardcover)
David Storey
R2,693 Discovery Miles 26 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Given its popularity, international football might be viewed as a prism through which the imagined community of the nation becomes closer to a manifest reality with matches providing examples of that community collectively rejoicing or crying. The sport potentially sheds insights on the complexities of ethnic and national identity, as it is a medium through which allegiances are (re)produced and expressed. Alongside the internationalisation of club teams, international representative teams also appear to be becoming more trans-national with players born outside that country, but with family connections to it, playing in the national colours. Increasing flexibility of regulations governing international representation means that countries can potentially select from a considerably broader pool of talent, drawing on players with ethnic or cultural connections to the country. For example, for a number of decades now, the Republic of Ireland team has included sizeable numbers of non-Irish born players, sons and grandsons of Irish emigrants. Similar tendencies are clear in the selection of English-born players of West Indian origin for football teams representing Caribbean countries. Colonial connections and related migration flows explain France's selection of players born in places such as Algeria or Morocco but brought up in France. The successful French teams of the late 1990s and early 2000s drew heavily on players from a multiplicity of ethnic and geographic origins. Conversely, many African countries select French-born players of African origin thereby reclaiming some of the sons of their extensive diasporas and a sizeable number of players born in Europe have competed in the Africa Cup of Nations in recent years. In this way, historical colonial relationships and associated migration flows provide the backdrop to the more eclectic nature of national representative teams. Elsewhere this amalgamation of both civic and ethnic senses of national identity, has allowed teams like Turkey and Croatia to tap into their extensive emigrant pool. This book focuses on one dimension of the intricate connections between football, place and politics. It investigates the switching of national sporting allegiance by some footballers from their country of birth to country of residency or family origins, examines the reasons behind the recent growth of the phenomenon, and explores reactions to this.

The Germans of the Soviet Union (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): Irina Mukhina The Germans of the Soviet Union (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
Irina Mukhina
R4,642 Discovery Miles 46 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Germans were a very substantial minority in Russia, and many leading figures, including the Empress Catherine the Great, were German. Using rarely seen archival information, this book provides an account of the experiences of the Germans living in the Soviet Union from the early post-revolution period to the post-Soviet era following the collapse of communism. Setting out the history of this minority group and explaining how they were affected by the Soviet regime's nationality policies, the book:

  • describes the character of the ethnic Germanic groups, demonstrating their diversity before the execution of the policy of systematic deportations by the Stalinist authorities from 1937 to 1947
  • argues that there was not one but several episodes of deportation within this period
  • considers the different dimensions of this policy, including the legal and economic structures of, and everyday life in, the Soviet special settlements
  • investigates the 'women's dimension' of deportation, especially the role of women in the preservation of ethnic identity among the afflicted groups
  • explores the long term consequences of Soviet deportations and exile on the identity of the Soviet Germans.
Arab Nationalism: A History: Nation and State in t he Arab World (Paperback): Y Choueiri Arab Nationalism: A History: Nation and State in t he Arab World (Paperback)
Y Choueiri
R1,181 Discovery Miles 11 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This concise survey looks at Arab nationalism both as an historical movement and as a doctrine. It guides readers new to the subject through the diverse scholarly views about its origins, nature, and intellectual significance.

The book identifies characteristics of Arab nationalism in the region in recent years, setting them in the context of political, economic, religious and cultural change throughout the Middle East. The author describes four distinct phases in the evolution of Arab nationalist ideas - the cultural, the political, the social and the fourth or current phase, in which both nationalism and democracy have resurfaced in a fresh encounter. He uses these stages as a basis for the discussion of ideology within an historical framework.

Students will appreciate the inclusion of study aids such as a list of dynastic chronologies, biographical entries on key figures, a glossary of unfamiliar terms and a guide to further reading.

Flagging Patriotism - Crises of Narcissism and Anti-Americanism (Paperback, New Ed): Ella Shohat, Robert Stam Flagging Patriotism - Crises of Narcissism and Anti-Americanism (Paperback, New Ed)
Ella Shohat, Robert Stam
R926 Discovery Miles 9 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The question Why do they hate us? is one of the most oft-cited puzzles of contemporary American affairs, yet it's not clear to whom they or us refers, nor even what hate means. In this bold new work, Ella Shohat and Robert Stam take apart the hate discourse of right-wing politics, placing it in an international context. How, for example, do other nations love themselves, and how is that love connected to their attitudes toward America? Is love of country monogamous or can one love many countries? When can a country's self-love be a symptom of self-hatred?

Drawing upon their extensive experience with South American, European, and Middle Eastern societies, the authors have written a long engagement with a problem that refuses to go away. Flagging Patriotism considers these complex features of being patriotic, and in so doing insists that the idea of patriotism, instead of being rejected or embraced, be accorded the complex identity it possesses.

Nationalism and Global Solidarities - Alternative Projections to Neoliberal Globalisation (Hardcover): James Goodman, Paul James Nationalism and Global Solidarities - Alternative Projections to Neoliberal Globalisation (Hardcover)
James Goodman, Paul James
R4,630 Discovery Miles 46 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The institutions and structures of modern globalization and the modern nation-state were formed through concurrent processes and have changed in relation to each other. This simple statement goes directly against those who would treat nationalism and globalism as the antithetical outcomes of two succeeding epochs. Likewise it challenges those who would narrowly define globalization as that which undermines the nation-state. However, it still leaves much to argue about. The apparently contradictory practices and ideologies of globalism and nationalism have been in tension ever since nation-states formed in the nineteenth century as part of globalizing system of states.
In the present century these tensions have become even more pronounced with many writers from both the Left and the Right proclaiming that globalization is effecting a tidal wave of change, leaving the nation-state behind in its wake. Despite the immensity of the change, it is becoming clearer that globalization is not drowning everything. It is certainly possible that processes of globalization may eventually undermine modern forms of nation-state sovereignty, but there is no inevitability about such an outcome, neither in logic nor in the day-to-day details of how power operates around the world. What is happening to the nation-state under conditions of intensified globalization, how should we respond? This is the first problematic addressed by the book.
We have seen both nationalist revivals and reassertion of movements from below - from neo-tribalism and new forms of traditionalism to anti-globalization movements and new kinds of grass-roots politics. These suggest the need for a very different approach -different from the seamless 'world of flows', or technologically-driven 'network society' suggested by some. Yet the extent of 'disorder' can be exaggerated. A number of otherwise sophisticated writers have found themselves arguing that the postmodern world has become increasingly fragmented without having an account of the level at which fragmentation takes place, and the level at which reintegration is occurring. Globalization cannot be understood simply as processes of disorder, fragmentation or rupture. Nor, on the other hand, is it simply a force of homogenization.
This leads us to the second problematic of the book. Globalism heralds a new era of corporate globalization, but at the same time it generates new foundations for identification and mobilization. Just as classical imperialism generated anti-imperialist movements and anti-colonial nationalisms, so today's 'empire' generates new frameworks for identification and mobilization. It seems that globalizing social forces generate frameworks beyond the national, but in the process create new foundations for nationalism. The book asks the following questions. Are we entering a new phase in the relationship between internationality and nationalism, or is nationalism rendered irredeemably contradictory, and anachronistic? Does nationalism re-enter by the back door, renewed and invigorated, whether as a partner of globalism or as its bete noir? What are the contemporary bases for a politics of solidarity in a globalizing world? These questions run implicitly through all the chapters.

Children's Knowledge, Beliefs and Feelings about Nations and National Groups (Hardcover): Martyn Barrett Children's Knowledge, Beliefs and Feelings about Nations and National Groups (Hardcover)
Martyn Barrett; Series edited by Peter Bryant, Usha Goswami
R4,514 Discovery Miles 45 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a state-of-the-art account of how people's subjective sense of national identity, and attitudes towards countries and national groups, develop through the course of childhood and adolescence. It offers a comprehensive review of the research which has been conducted into: . children's understanding of nations as geographical territories and as political, historical and cultural communities . children's knowledge, beliefs and feelings about the people who belong to different national groups . children's attitudes towards, and emotional attachment to, their own country and national group. The authors elaborate on the developmental patterns that have been found to emerge, contextualized by a consideration and evaluation of the theoretical frameworks which can be used to explain these patterns. Written by the leading international authority in this field, and reporting (in collaboration with his colleagues) the findings from two major transnational research projects, this book will be invaluable to postgraduate students and researchers working in this field. The book will also be of great benefit to undergraduate students taking courses in Developmental Psychology, the Sociology of Childhood, and Education.

John Locke, Territory, and Transmigration (Hardcover): Brian Smith John Locke, Territory, and Transmigration (Hardcover)
Brian Smith
R4,493 Discovery Miles 44 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines John Locke as a theorist of migration, immigration, and the movement of peoples. It outlines the contours of the public discourse surrounding migration in the seventeenth century and situates Locke's in-depth involvement in these debates. The volume presents a variety of undercurrents in Locke's writing - his ideas on populationism, naturalization, colonization and the right to withdrawal, the plight of refugees, and territorial rights - which have great import in present-day debates about migration. Departing from the popular extant literature that sees Locke advocating for a strong right to exclude foreigners, the author proposes a Lockean theory of immigration that recognizes the fundamental right to emigrate, thus catering to an age wrought with terrorism, xenophobia and economic inequality. A unique and compelling contribution, the volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of political theory, political philosophy, history of international politics, international relations, international political economy, public policy, seventeenth century English history, migration and citizenship studies, and moral philosophy.

Civic Nationalisms in Global Perspective (Paperback): Jasper Trautsch Civic Nationalisms in Global Perspective (Paperback)
Jasper Trautsch
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recent events around the globe have cast doubt on the assumption that, as a result of increasing cross-border migrations and global interdependencies, nation-states are becoming more inclusive, ethnic forms of identification more and more a thing of the past, and processes of supranational integration progressively more acceptable. Xenophobic forms of nationalism have once again been on the rise, as became strikingly visible through the results of the Brexit referendum, the election of Donald Trump, and the inclusion of the Lega Nord in the Italian government. It is timely, therefore, to inquire how multiethnic forms of nationalism can be re-promoted and for this purpose to re-investigate the concept of civic nationalism. This book assembles case studies that analyse the historical practices of civic or quasi-civic nationalisms from around the world. By allowing for global comparisons, the collection of articles seeks to shed new light on pressing questions faced by nation-states around the world today: Are truly civic nationalisms even possible? Which strategies have multiethnic nation-states pursued in the past to foster national sentiment? How can nation-states generate social solidarity without resorting to primordialism? Can the historical example of civic or quasi-civic nation-states offer useful lessons to contemporary nation-states for successfully integrating immigrants?

The Genesis of Baloch Nationalism - Politics and Ethnicity in Pakistan, 1947-1977 (Paperback): Salman Rafi Sheikh The Genesis of Baloch Nationalism - Politics and Ethnicity in Pakistan, 1947-1977 (Paperback)
Salman Rafi Sheikh
R1,387 Discovery Miles 13 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the ideological, political and military interventions of the state of Pakistan in Balochistan and traces the genesis of today's secessionist movement. It delves into the historical question of Balochistan's integration into Pakistan in 1947 and brings out the true political and militant character of the movement during the first three decades (1947-77) of Pakistan's existence as a nation-state. It shows how the Baloch, as well as other minority groups, were denied the right to identify themselves as a sub-national/ethnic group in the new nation-state, compounded by a systematic exclusion from decision-making circles and structures of political and economic power. The volume also traces political resistance from within Balochistan and its subsequent suppression by military operations, leading to a widespread militant insurgency in the present day. Drawing on hitherto unexplored sources, this book will be indispensable to scholars and researchers of South Asian history, politics, international relations and area studies.

Written by a team of international scholars, Sport and Nationalism in Asia - Power, Politics, and Identity is a collection of original research which addresses a number of issues central to notions of nationalism and identity in sport including: how the Olympics and other international and regional sports events have fostered an active interweaving of sport, politics and nationalism; the role of traditional sport in the building of national consciousness and national identity; the way modern sport creates and reflects nationalism, thereby giving it a voice and a focus. The book covers eight case studies on countries/regions across West Asia, Central Asia and East Asia. This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

Power and Emotion (Paperback): Jonathan Heaney, Helena Flam Power and Emotion (Paperback)
Jonathan Heaney, Helena Flam
R1,375 Discovery Miles 13 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection is concerned with two fundamental concepts of social science- power and emotion. Power permeates all human relationships and is constitutive of social, economic, and political life. It stands at the centre of social and political theorizing, and its study has enriched scholarship within a wide range of disciplines, including sociology, political science, philosophy, and anthropology. The conceptual cluster of emotion, by contrast, had a more troubled time within these same disciplines. However, since the 1970's and the advent of the 'emotional turn', there has been a widespread re-evaluation of emotion in and for our shared social existence and, today, emotions research is at forefront of contemporary social science. Yet, although both concepts are now widely seen as fundamental, research on these two phenomena has tended to run in parallel. This collection, featuring leading international scholars, seeks to unite and deploy both concepts, emotion and power, in a variety of ways, and on a diverse array of topics such as: education, organizations, social movements, politics, 'old' and 'new' media, rhetoric and in comparative intellectual history. The results are at the bleeding edge of scholarship on these concepts, and will make important reading for practitioners and students working in the sociology of emotions, social and political power, political sociology, organization studies, and for sociological and political theory more generally. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Political Power.

David Rock
R1,025 Discovery Miles 10 250 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Dawn of Democracy in the Eastern Himalayan Kingdoms - The 20th Century (Paperback): Awadhesh C. Sinha Dawn of Democracy in the Eastern Himalayan Kingdoms - The 20th Century (Paperback)
Awadhesh C. Sinha
R1,141 Discovery Miles 11 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book traces the beginnings of democracy in the three Himalayan kingdoms of Sikkim, Nepal and Bhutan. Charting the mobilisations and political experimentations that took place in the former buffer states under monarchies to establish democratic regimes, this book investigates their varying degrees of success, and offers a critical commentary on the consequent socio-political histories of this region. The volume sheds light on the nuances of their different geo-political contexts of the three Himalayan states, while tracing the social origins of the movements. It also undertakes a close analysis of the political participation and leadership involved to understand their achievements and limitations. A comprehensive analysis of a hitherto unexplored chapter in South Asian history, it will be of an immense interest to scholars and researchers of international relations, modern history, sociology and social anthropology, politics, South Asian studies, area studies, especially Nepal and Himalayan studies, as well as policy makers and government think tanks.

The Politics of Personal Law in South Asia - Identity, Nationalism and the Uniform Civil Code (Paperback, 2nd edition): Partha... The Politics of Personal Law in South Asia - Identity, Nationalism and the Uniform Civil Code (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Partha S. Ghosh
R1,404 Discovery Miles 14 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The viability of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has always been a bone of contention in socially and politically plural South Asia. It is entangled within the polemics of identity politics, minority rights, women's rights, national integration, uniform citizenry and, of late, global Islamic politics and universal human rights. While champions of each category view the issue from their own perspectives, making the debate extremely complex, this book takes up the challenge of providing a holistic political analysis. As most of the South Asian states today subscribe to a decentralised view and share a common history, this study is an excellent comparative analysis of the applicability of the UCC. In this work, India figures prominently, being the most plural and vibrant democracy, as well as accounting for almost three-fourths of the region's population. This provides the backdrop for an analysis of the other states in the region. This second edition will be indispensable for scholars, researchers and students of law, political science and South Asian Studies.

Nationalisms in Japan (Hardcover): Naoko Shimazu Nationalisms in Japan (Hardcover)
Naoko Shimazu
R4,636 Discovery Miles 46 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nationalisms in Japan brings together leading specialists in the field to discuss how notions of 'nationalism' in modern Japan impinges on all aspects of social, political and cultural understanding of the Japanese nation or the Japanese state. This book is clearly presented and jargon-free, and encompasses a chronological period of roughly two hundred years, beginning with a discussion of some of the early Japanese national thinkers of the Mito School, and ending with a contemporary discussion of the official visits made by Prime Minister Koizumi Jun'ichiro to the highly controversial Yasukuni Shrine. This wide chronological period allows for important observations about the evolution of nationalism, suggesting that Japan actually houses multiple 'nationalisms'.

Presenting new insights and understanding, this is a valuable addition to those working on modern Japan and nationalism.

National Narcissism - The Intersection of the Nationalist Cult and Gender in Hungary (Paperback): Eric Beckett Weaver National Narcissism - The Intersection of the Nationalist Cult and Gender in Hungary (Paperback)
Eric Beckett Weaver
R1,691 Discovery Miles 16 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

National Narcissism offers a groundbreaking anthropological and sociological approach to nationalism through an expose of the belief systems and psychology of extreme nationalists for whom nationalism is a form of religion. This theoretical approach is illustrated with examples primarily taken from Hungary, with a special focus in two chapters on the role of gender in nationalism. The state of politics and society in Hungary is also examined in a way that steps beyond the usual simplistic, flat narratives of 'what Hungarians are like', by stressing the broad variety of viewpoints current in Hungarian society, the milieu in which a small minority of extreme nationalists are able to make their voice heard out of proportion to their numbers or political support. The theory offered by National Narcissism has wide-ranging implications for the future study of extremist nationalism in nation-states throughout the world. Sociologists, anthropologists, nationalism studies specialists, social-psychologists, and historians of the recent past in Hungary will find that this theoretical book, richly illustrated with examples from Hungarian society, challenges positive and negative stereotypes about nationalism, extremism, post-communism, central and eastern Europe, the European Union and, not least, about Hungarians themselves.

European Integration and the Nationalities Question (Hardcover): John McGarry, Michael Keating European Integration and the Nationalities Question (Hardcover)
John McGarry, Michael Keating
R4,665 Discovery Miles 46 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This topical book examines the effect of European integration on relations between states and minority nations. The editors, picking up an older vocabulary, call this the "nationalities question."
This new collection brings together the leading specialists in the field, and covers a wide range of cases, from Northern Ireland in the West, to Estonia and Latvia in the East, and Cyprus in the South-East. The contributors assess how European integration has affected the preparedness of states to accommodate minorities across a range of fundamental criteria, including: enhanced rights protection; autonomy; the provision of a voice for minorities in the European and international arena; and the promotion of cross-border cooperation among communities dissected by state frontiers. The comprehensive chapters stress the importance of the nationality question, and the fact that, contrary to the hopes and beliefs of many on the left and right, it is not going to go away.
Beginning with an introductory essay that summarizes the impact of "European Integration on the Nationalities Question," this accessible book will be of strong interest to scholars and researchers of Politics, Nationalism, Ethnic Conflict and European Studies.

Globalism, Regionalism and Nationalism (Paperback): Y. Yamamoto Globalism, Regionalism and Nationalism (Paperback)
Y. Yamamoto
R658 Discovery Miles 6 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Globalization is one of the salient trends in the post-Cold War era but exhibits different meanings and forms depending on individual nations and respective regions. It is one of the key themes in international relations in our era to demonstrate both theoretically and empirically how globalism, regionalism and nationalism are related to each other. This book addresses these issues by pulling together varied regional perspectives, particularly from Asia. It deals with the general issue of globalization, both the global and the regional dimensions; regionalism in the Asia-Pacific region; and comparisons between China and Japan, and finally it examines how Japan in particular has been coping with globalization and internalization.

Bringing together contributions from leading Asian, North American and European scholars, this book offers important new insights into globalization, regionalism and nationalism and into Asian perspectives on international affairs.
