Ross J Baldessarini
R4,641 Discovery Miles 46 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Use of psychotropic drugs has come to dominate clinical practice in psychiatry worldwide-perhaps owing largely to perceived simplicity, ease of use, and apparent efficiency, as well as apparent cost-effectiveness of such treatments. Nevertheless, medicinal treatments for patients with psychiatric disorders are but one component of comprehensive clinical care of complex human problems. Extensively updated since its second edition in 1985, "Chemotherapy in Psychiatry," "Third Edition, " again addresses basic aspects of modern psychopharmacology and clinical applications of drugs used in the treatment of major psychiatric disorders, with major emphasis on psychotic, bipolar, and depressive disorders. The presentation covers descriptions of the main classes of psychotropic drugs, selected information concerning their known action mechanisms and metabolic disposition, and their clinical applications for acute illnesses and to prevent recurrences and long-term morbidity. Also covered are limitations and adverse effects of each type of agent, with emphasis on the fact that all psychotropic medicines have adverse effects that range from annoying to potentially lethal." Chemotherapy in Psychiatry, Third Edition, " outlines the need to balance benefits and risks at the level of individual persons. Authoritative, and an important contribution to the literature, "Chemotherapy in Psychiatry, Third Edition" is an invaluable resource for physicians, scientists, trainees, and policymakers. "

Alan A. Boulton, Glen B. Baker, Augusto V Juorio
R4,382 Discovery Miles 43 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Serendipitous discovery has played an important role m the identification of physiological mechanisms in central and peri- eral neurotransmission. In many cases, the subsequent followup of these discoveries has been substantially aided by previouslyiden- fied natural substances that interfered with these mechanisms. The site of neuromuscular blockade produced by curare extracts, for example, was shown in the 1850s by Claude Bernard, and Sir Henry H. Dale m 1906 discovered the reversal of the pressor effects of adrenal extracts by ergot alkaloids. These findings were the first clues that led eventually to the definition of mcotinic cholinergic receptors and the present classification of adrenergic receptors. In the 1950s many discoveries, including the identification of the catecholamines and 5-hydroxytryptamine in the central n- vous system, followed by the development of specific sensitive biochemical and histochemical methods and the introduction of modern psychotropic drugs led to our increased understanding of chemical transmission and the formulation of theories that attempt to explain the causes of some mental disorders. The finding that hydroxylated derivatives of noradrenaline and- hydroxytryptamine are readily taken up by catecholaminergic or serotonergic neurons, and that this is followed by poisoning and death of the cell, encouraged the use of these compounds for the mapping of central and peripheral catecholamine or- hydroxytryptamine systems, and the mvestigation of the re- vance of these pathways to receptor regulation or behavioral - sponses.

R4,276 Discovery Miles 42 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Depression ranks as a leading mental health problem among Hispanic immigrants and their US-born children. And a wide array of issues - starting with the widespread stereotype of the "illegal immigrant" - makes the Latino experience of this condition differ from that of any other group. Depression in Latinos consolidates the conceptual, diagnostic, and clinical knowledge based on this salient topic, providing coverage from prevalence to prevention, from efficient screening to effective interventions. In this concise yet comprehensive volume, leading clinicians, researchers, and academics offer extensive research and clinical findings, literature reviews (e.g., an in-depth chapter on the Mexican American Prevalence and Services Survey), and insights gathered from first-hand experience in clinical practice. Perceptive information is offered on the most urgent and complex issues on depression in this diverse and dynamic population, including: (1) The impact language, culture, and societal factors have on depression and its diagnosis. (2) The most relevant assessment instruments. (3) How depression manifests among Latino children, youth, and seniors as well as in Latinas. (4) The relationship between depression and substance abuse. (5) The most effective evidence-based treatment methods. (6) The efficacy of interventions for depression at the community level. Depression in Latinos is vital reading for clinicians, counseling and school psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical social workers, and public health professionals interested in providing their Hispanic clients with the most effective treatment possible. In addition, its coverage of the broader issues of access to care makes this volume essential reading for mental health administrators, volunteer/outreach agencies, and policymakers.

The Cerebrospinal Fluid (Hardcover, 1989 ed.): Robert M. Herndon, Roger A. Brumback The Cerebrospinal Fluid (Hardcover, 1989 ed.)
Robert M. Herndon, Roger A. Brumback
R5,487 Discovery Miles 54 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For centuries the great minds of medical science puzzled over the importance of the cerebrospinal fluid. As far back as Hippocrates, it was thought that this "phlegm" that flooded the intracranial contents had pathological significance. However, not until the late 1800s, when Quincke introduced and popularized lumbar puncture, did physicians take an interest in the study of this fluid in relation to clinical illness. Since then a variety of techniques for obtaining cerebrospinal fluid from various sites have developed, and the relationship of cerebrospinal fluid to a variety of disease processes has received considerable study. In this volume, we have attempted to assemble reviews of some of these important developments during the past century. Chapter 1 contains a historical review of key investigations that helped shape our concepts of cerebrospinal fluid from the earliest recorded description by the author of the Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus in the seventeenth century B. C. to contemporaries such as Kabat, Glusman, and Knaub, who introduced quantitative determinations of cerebrospinal fluid gamma globulin levels. In Chapter 2 there is a description of our current understanding of the anatomical compartment for the cerebrospinal fluid and the physiology of its formation, circulation, and absorption. Dr. Richard Leech in Chapter 3 contributes a comprehensive description of the disorders associated with excessive quanti ties of cerebrospinal fluid-commonly referred to as hydrocephalus. A variety of techniques for properly collecting and evaluating cerebrospinal fluid are detailed in Chapter 4.

R6,086 Discovery Miles 60 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past thirty years, with improvements in optics, electronics, and computer technology, great strides have been made in the quantitative analysis of the visual system. A number of books on eye movement research have been written that have dealt with specific aspects of either eye movement control. However, none of these books provide a comprehensive overview of multiple aspects of the visual system. Moreover, few of these books contain modeling and detailed quantitative analyses of the visual system. Further, since the major books are almost ten years old, there is a need for an update to include the most recent research findings. It is with these considerations in mind that we have carefully compiled this updated, comprehensive, and quantitative model-based edited book on various components of the visual system. Some of the best vision scientists in the world in their respective fields have contributed to chapters in this book. They have expertise in a wide variety of fields, including bioengineering, basic and clinical visual science, medicine, neurophysiology, optometry, and psychology. Their combined efforts have resulted in a high quality book that covers modeling and quantitative analysis of optical, neurosensory, oculomotor, perceptual and clinical systems. It includes only those techniques and models that have such fundamentally strong physiological, control system, and perceptual bases that they will serve as foundations for models and analysis techniques in the future. The book is aimed first towards seniors and beginning graduate students in biomedical engineering, neurophysiology, optometry, and psychology, who will gain a broad understanding of quantitative analysisof the visual system. In addition, it has sufficient depth in each area to be useful as an updated reference and tutorial for graduate and post-doctoral students, as well as general vision scientists.

The book explores the lived reality of parenting and caring for children with autism in contemporary urban India. It is based on a qualitative, ethnographic study of families of children with autism as they negotiate the tricky terrain of identifying their child s disability, obtaining a diagnosis, accessing appropriate services and their on-going efforts to come to terms with and make sense of their child s unique subjectivity and mode of being. It examines the gendered dimensions of coping and care-giving and the differential responses of mothers and fathers, siblings and grandparents and the extended family network to this complex and often extremely challenging condition. The book tackles head on the sombre question, What will happen to the child after the parents are gone ? It also critically examines the role of the state, civil society and legal and institutional frameworks in place in India and undertakes a case study of Action for Autism ; a Delhi-based NGO set up by parents of children with autism. This book also draws upon the author s own engagement with her child' s disability and thus lends an authenticity born out of lived experience and in-depth understanding. It is a valuable addition to the literature in the sociology of the family and disability studies.
