Historical- critical approaches to Scripture rule out some readings and commend others, but they rarely offer much help to either theological reflection or the preaching of the Word. They do not point the church forward in the life of discipleship. These commentaries have learned from tradition, but they are most importantly commentaries for today. The authors share the conviction that their work will be more contemporary, more faithful, and more radical, to the extent that it is more biblical, honestly wrestling with the texts of the Scriptures.--from the series introduction The volumes in Belief: A Theological Commentary on the Bible from Westminster John Knox Press offer a fresh and invigorating approach to all the books of the Bible. Building on a wide range of sources from biblical studies, the history of theology, the church's liturgical and musical traditions, contemporary culture, and the Christian tradition, noted scholars focus less on traditional historical and literary angles in favor of a theologically focused commentary that considers the contemporary relevance of the texts. This series is an invaluable resource for those who want to probe beyond the backgrounds and words of biblical texts to their deep theological and ethical meanings for the church today.

Miracles Revisited - New Testament Miracle Stories and their Concepts of Reality (Hardcover): Stefan Alkier, Annette... Miracles Revisited - New Testament Miracle Stories and their Concepts of Reality (Hardcover)
Stefan Alkier, Annette Weissenrieder
R4,344 Discovery Miles 43 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since David Hume, the interpretation of miracle stories has been dominated in the West by the binary distinction of fact vs. fiction. The form-critical method added another restriction to the interpretation of miracles by neglecting the context of its macrotexts. Last but not least the hermeneutics of demythologizing was interested in the self-understanding of individuals and not in political perspectives. The book revisits miracle stories with regard to these dimensions: 1. It demands to connect the interpretation of Miracle Stories to concepts of reality. 2. It criticizes the restrictions of the form critical method. 3. It emphasizes the political implications of Miracle Stories and their interpretations. Even the latest research accepts this modern opposition of fact and fiction as self-evident. This book will examine critically these concepts of reality with interpretations of miracles. The book will address how concepts of reality, always complex, came to expression in stories of miraculous healings and their reception in medicine, art, literature, theology and philosophy, from classic antiquity to the Middle Ages. Only through such bygone concepts, contemporary interpretations of ancient healings can gain plausibility.

Most Christians are unaware of the doctrinal debates taking place within the religious academic community. When they "are "aware of these discussions, they may consider them irrelevant or even harmful to Christian practice. Jaime Clark- Soles invites seminarians, seminary faculty, and church leaders to find common ground by considering the various debates, the reasons they persist, the implications of each, and how they pertain to Christian identity and faith within the larger contemporary culture. Includes study questions.

David Taylor
R1,962 Discovery Miles 19 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Eleven papers from the First Birmingham Colloquium on the Textual Criticism of the New Testament, examining aspects of the Textus Receptus, the 'Pre-Johannine Text' of the Gospel, the ratings system in the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament and the application of probability theory to textual transmission, as well as surveys of non-continuous papyrus witnesses to the New Testament and the Dura-Europos Gospel Harmony, alongside studies of variation in the form of the Beatitudes and the location of Emmaus.

Configuring Nicodemus - An Interdisciplinary Approach to Complex Characterization (Hardcover): Michael R. Whitenton Configuring Nicodemus - An Interdisciplinary Approach to Complex Characterization (Hardcover)
Michael R. Whitenton
R3,983 Discovery Miles 39 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Michael Whitenton offers a fresh perspective on the characterization of Nicodemus, focusing on the benefit of Hellenistic rhetoric and the cognitive sciences for understanding audience construals of characters in ancient narratives. Whitenton builds an interdisciplinary approach to ancient characters, utilizing cognitive science, Greek stock characters, ancient rhetoric, and modern literary theory. He then turns his attention to the characterization of Nicodemus, where he argues that Nicodemus would likely be understood initially as a dissembling character, only to depart from that characterization later in the narrative, suggesting a journey toward Johannine faith. Whitenton presents a compelling argument: many in an ancient audience would construe Nicodemus in ways that suggest his development from doubt and suspicion to commitment and devotion.

Management and the Gospel - Luke's Radical Message for the First and Twenty-First Centuries (Hardcover, New): B. Dyck Management and the Gospel - Luke's Radical Message for the First and Twenty-First Centuries (Hardcover, New)
B. Dyck
R3,404 Discovery Miles 34 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The goals of Management and the Gospel: Luke's Radical Message for the First and Twenty-First Centuries may appear to be simple: it describes what management theory and practice looked like in the first century, uses this as a lens to examine what the Gospel of Luke says about management, and draws out implications for today. However, the book is quite profound in finding that management is a dominant theme in the Gospel, that its message is consistently counter-cultural, and that Luke contains a four-phase 'how to' process model to help readers to implement change. Readers will acquire a new way to understand the Gospel as well as the moral foundations of modern management.

The American Standard Version is a classic text for digging into the depths of God's Word. The complete Bible, first published in 1901, has been used since that time to seek a full understanding of Scripture. The Version sought-and greatly achieved-a literal translation of the original languages into American English. Because the translation is so literal, it has been treasured as a tool for understanding God's original intent by those who do not read Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

Created in Christ Jesus for Good Works - The Integration of Soteriology & Ethics in Ephesians (Paperback): Esther Petrenko Created in Christ Jesus for Good Works - The Integration of Soteriology & Ethics in Ephesians (Paperback)
Esther Petrenko
R866 Discovery Miles 8 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The relationship between the so-called 'theological' (Eph 1 3) and 'paraenetic' (Eph 4 6) sections of Ephesians has been a matter of extensive scholarly discussion. Central to this debate is the question whether the ethical material found in Ephesians 4 6 is an integral part of the theological statements in Ephesians 1 3, or whether it is merely an appendage with its own self-contained theology. This study undertakes a fresh investigation into the relationship between the 'theological' and 'paraenetic' sections of Ephesians. It demonstrates the intrinsic integration of both parts of the letter by examining the soteriological pattern of Ephesians, and how salvation entails the moral and social transformation of believers; this, in turn, renders meaningless the category-distinction between 'theology' and 'ethics'.

A Critical Examination of the Coherence-Based Genealogical Method in New Testament Textual Criticism (Hardcover): Peter Gurry A Critical Examination of the Coherence-Based Genealogical Method in New Testament Textual Criticism (Hardcover)
Peter Gurry
R3,838 Discovery Miles 38 380 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This study offers the first sustained examination of the Coherence-Based Genealogical Method (CBGM), a computerized method being used to edit the most widely-used editions of the Greek New Testament. Part one addresses the CBGM's history and reception before providing a fresh statement of its principles and procedures. Parts two and three consider the method's ability to recover the initial text and to delineate its history. A new portion of the global stemma is presented for the first time and important conclusions are drawn about the nature of the initial text, scribal habits, and the origins of the Byzantine text. A final chapter suggests improvements and highlights limitations. Overall, the CBGM is positively assessed but not without important criticisms and cautions.

Dialogue Not Dogma - Many Voices in the Gospel of Luke (Hardcover, New): Raj Nadella Dialogue Not Dogma - Many Voices in the Gospel of Luke (Hardcover, New)
Raj Nadella
R4,623 Discovery Miles 46 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Lukan scholars offer varying responses to the issue of divergent viewpoints in the gospel regarding the identity of Jesus, wealth, women, and the emphasis on doing vis-vis hearing. Many forms of criticism attempt to explain or harmonize these apparent contradictions. Conversely, Raj Nadella argues that there is no dominant viewpoint in Luke and that the divergence in viewpoints is a unique literary feature to be celebrated rather than a problem to be solved. Nadella interprets selected Lukan passages in light of Bakhtinian concepts such as dialogism, loophole, and exotopy to show that the disparate perspectives, and interplay between them, display Lukes superior literary skills rather than his inability to produce a coherent work. Luke emerges as a work akin to Dostoevskys Brothers Karamazov that accommodates competing views on several issues and allows them to enter into an unfinalizable dialogue as equal partners.

The Heavenlies in Ephesians - A Lexical, Exegetical, and Conceptual Analysis (Hardcover): M. Jeff Brannon The Heavenlies in Ephesians - A Lexical, Exegetical, and Conceptual Analysis (Hardcover)
M. Jeff Brannon
R4,637 Discovery Miles 46 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The expression "in the heavenlies" appears five times in Ephesians and is not found at any other point in the New Testament. The two appearances which have provoked the most debate are the session of earthly believers in 2:6 and the presence of the spiritual forces of evil in 6:12.
M. Jeff Brannon conducts a lexical, exegetical, and conceptual analysis of the expression arguing against the prevailing interpretation of the term and provides in-depth examinations of three significant concepts associated with it; namely the redeemed on earth having a heavenly status, evil powers in heaven, and the cosmology of Ephesians. Brannon uses a wide range of souces; Greek, Jewish, the Apostolic Fathers, and the Septuagint. Brannon concludes that there is no basis for a distinction between the terms 'heavens' and 'in the heavenlies' in Ephesians . He also asserts that Qumran and apocalyptic texts can shed light upon and assist in a proper understanding of the difficult passages in which the expression appears.

The Magdalene in the Reformation (Hardcover): Margaret Arnold The Magdalene in the Reformation (Hardcover)
Margaret Arnold
R860 Discovery Miles 8 600 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Prostitute, apostle, evangelist-the conversion of Mary Magdalene from sinner to saint is one of the Christian tradition's most compelling stories, and one of the most controversial. The identity of the woman-or, more likely, women-represented by this iconic figure has been the subject of dispute since the Church's earliest days. Much less appreciated is the critical role the Magdalene played in remaking modern Christianity. In a vivid recreation of the Catholic and Protestant cultures that emerged in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, The Magdalene in the Reformation reveals that the Magdalene inspired a devoted following among those eager to find new ways to relate to God and the Church. In popular piety, liturgy, and preaching, as well as in education and the arts, the Magdalene tradition provided both Catholics and Protestants with the flexibility to address the growing need for reform. Margaret Arnold shows that as the medieval separation between clergy and laity weakened, the Magdalene represented a new kind of discipleship for men and women and offered alternative paths for practicing a Christian life. Where many have seen two separate religious groups with conflicting preoccupations, Arnold sees Christians who were often engaged in a common dialogue about vocation, framed by the life of Mary Magdalene. Arnold disproves the idea that Protestants removed saints from their theology and teaching under reform. Rather, devotion to Mary Magdalene laid the foundation within Protestantism for the public ministry of women.

Speech-in-Character, Diatribe, and Romans 3:1-9 - Who's Speaking When and Why It Matters (Hardcover): Justin King Speech-in-Character, Diatribe, and Romans 3:1-9 - Who's Speaking When and Why It Matters (Hardcover)
Justin King
R4,051 Discovery Miles 40 510 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In Speech-in-Character, Diatribe, and Romans 3:1-9, Justin King argues that the rhetorical skill of speech-in-character (prosopopoiia, sermocinatio, conformatio) offers a methodologically sound foundation for understanding the script of Paul's imaginary dialogue with an interlocutor in Romans 3:1-9. King focuses on speech-in-character's stable criterion that attributed speech should be appropriate to the characterization of the speaker. Here, speech-in-character helps to inform which voice in the dialogue speaks which lines, and the general goals of diatribe help shape how an "appropriate" understanding of the script is best interpreted. King's analyses of speech-in-character, diatribe, and Romans, therefore, make independent contributions while simultaneously working together to advance scholarship on a much debated passage in one of history's most important texts.

Manuscripts, Texts, Theology - Collected Papers 1977-2007 (Hardcover): David C. Parker Manuscripts, Texts, Theology - Collected Papers 1977-2007 (Hardcover)
David C. Parker
R5,404 Discovery Miles 54 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

David C. Parker is one of the world's foremost specialists in the study of the New Testament text and of Greek and Latin manuscripts. In addition to editions, monographs and more popular writings, he has published many articles on different aspects of textual criticism. This volume brings together twentyfive of them in a revised and updated version. The collection is divided into three topics. The first deals with manuscript studies. As well as three very different studies of Codex Bezae, there are articles and reports on individual manuscripts and classes of manuscripts and reports on visits to libraries. The second section has the theme of textual criticism. It includes broader studies dealing with the theory of the discipline and more detailed discussions of particular problems, including translations into Latin, techniques for grouping Greek manuscripts, and the comparison of modern editions. The third section contains papers in which Parker has discussed the often overlooked relationship between textual criticism and theology. These studies explore particular textual problems and their wider significance, and cover topics as varied as "Jesus and Textual Criticism", "Calvin's Biblical Text" and "The Early Tradition of Jesus' Sayings on Divorce".
