The Hospital at the End of the World (Hardcover): Joe Niemczura The Hospital at the End of the World (Hardcover)
Joe Niemczura
R759 R675 Discovery Miles 6 750 Save R84 (11%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There are 2,600 hospitals in Asia, Africa and South America which could be classified as "Mission Hospitals" - far off the beaten path, providing basic medical service to the poorest people of the world. The Hospital at the End of the World tells the story of a nurse from the USA and his first experience as a teaching nurse in Nepal.

Joe Niemczura brings to life the day-to-day realities of life in a rural teaching hospital, literally at the "end of the road." The harsh realities of a lack of modern medical equipment when mixed with the humanness of endurances demonstrates that above all, it is the individual who matters; both patient and caregiver. All else pales in comparison. The strength of this story is in relationships with students, physicians, other nurses, patients, families and most importantly with Nepal itself. There is a sense of community connectedness which the author brings alive as the reader becomes one with the story. The heartbreak and grief of death to the celebrations of life will elicit those same emotions. The thread through it all is the author's own journey as he discovers himself and renews his spirituality. The reader is immediately pulled into the drama and nakedness, and the beauty and mystery of this incredible part of the world. Ellen L. Bridge, RN, BS, MTS

R2,213 Discovery Miles 22 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Innovation Processes in Medical Education" is the first empirical study to investigate the barriers to successful educational change. Using a qualitative case study approach, it examines the factors that have either supported or impeded change in four medical schools: Case Western Reserve, University of Illinois, McMaster University, and Michigan State University. Following an overview of the historical forces that led to the current structure of the medical school curriculum; the authors discuss their research methodology and data, and analyze their attempts at innovation in each of the four cases, examining the relative merits of each effort. A matrix is developed that will help medical school innovators establish implementation strategies by showing them how to arrive at optimal strategies based on the specific context in which they work.

Geriatric Nursing Assistants - An Annotated Bibliography with Models to Enhance Practice (Hardcover, Annotated edition): George... Geriatric Nursing Assistants - An Annotated Bibliography with Models to Enhance Practice (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
George H. Weber
R1,345 Discovery Miles 13 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This up-to-date bibliography of heretofore scattered references to nursing assistants includes literature pertinent to the construction of models to improve nursing assistant practice and emphasizes the psychosocial skills that are invaluable to the nursing assistant's work. Annotated reviews center on the tasks and context of nursing assistant work and ways to improve practice through training, organizational development, advocacy, and bargaining. Additional chapters present a tentative psychosocial model of nursing assistant practice, offer six intervention models, and investigate ways of further developing the nursing assistant occupation. Very highly recommended. Choice The role of the nursing home has expanded in the late twentieth century due to both the growing percentage of elderly in the U.S. population and to society's tendency to over-institutionalize people. In recent years, the kinds and quality of care given to the elderly in nursing homes have received intense scrutiny. This timely bibliography focuses on nursing assistants--the personnel who are with the elderly around the clock, doing a variety of tasks, ranging from helping them with basic functions to comforting them during periods of distress. Nursing assistants provide as much as 90 percent of the direct care received by the elderly in the nursing home setting. Emphasizing the psychosocial skills that make the nursing assistant's job so important to the well being of nursing home residents, Geriatric Nursing Assistants collects and annotates the heretofore scattered references to nursing assistants and includes literature pertinent to the construction of models that improve nursing-assistant practice. The first four chapters present the annotated reviews, which are organized in anticipation of the practice enhancement models discussed in Chapter Six. These reviews center on the tasks and context of the nursing assistant's work and on ways to improve practice through training, organizational development, advocacy, and bargaining. Chapter Five offers a tentative psychosocial concept of nursing-assistant practice that requires further development, detailing the various resident psychosocial circumstances to which the nursing assistant might respond helpfully and the kinds of interventions and techniques which the nursing assistant might attempt. In Chapter Six, intervention models--on inservice training, organizational development, advocacy, and bargaining--are presented in ideal-typical forms that recognize the limitations of daily practice; also, these models emphasize rigorous practice and its evaluation. Activities necessary to further develop the nursing-assistant occupation, including political action, are investigated in Chapter Seven, which also considers the moral aspects of a progressive agenda for nursing assistants. This reference seeks to improve services to nursing home residents and represents a valuable, practical contribution to the geriatric field. It will be useful to nursing home administrators and directors of nursing homes who must address ways to improve the working conditions of nursing assistants; to academicians in their research, training, and advocacy efforts; and to the training directors and supervisors in the field who can directly aid nursing assistants in the acquisition of needed knowledge and skills.

This book is concerned with the complexities of achieving quality in care transitions. The organization and accomplishment of high quality care transitions relies upon the coordination of multiple professionals, working within and across multiple care processes, settings and organizations, each with their own distinct ways of working, profile of resources, and modes of organizing. In short, care transitions might easily be regarded as complex activities that take place within complex systems, which can make accomplishing high quality care challenging. As a subject of enquiry, care transitions are approached from many research, improvement and policy perspectives: from group psychology and human factors to social and political theory; from applied process re-engineering projects to exploratory ethnographic studies; from large-scale policy innovations to local improvements initiatives. This collection will provide a unique cross-disciplinary and multi-level analysis, where each chapter presents a particular depth of insight and analysis, and together offer a holistic and detail understand of care transitions.

Patricia Moyle Wright
R818 Discovery Miles 8 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

An on-the-go reference for hospice nurses and those interested in end-of-life care, this practical guide covers the essential elements in the compassionate and holistic care of terminally ill patients and their families. Nurses care for patients facing end-of-life issues in every practice specialty, and as the American population continues to age the need for proficiency in end-of-life skills will become increasingly important. This book is an invaluable resource that provides emotional, administrative, and palliative support, whether in a hospice, long-term care facility, or even in acute care settings. This vital go-to text clearly and concisely lays out not only how to care for patients facing end-of-life issues, but also how to engage in self-care and cope with occupational stress. Beginning with an overview of hospice care, including its history and philosophy, this book offers a timeline of the growth of the hospice movement in the U.S. Subsequent sections include up-to-date information on the clinical responsibilities of the hospice nurse in addressing the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of terminally ill patients and their families in a culturally sensitive way. This book also outlines the administrative duties of the hospice nurse, including hospice documentation, a review of hospice regulations, and quality management. The closing section focuses on occupational stress in hospice nursing and how to engage in self-care. This text can serve as a useful clinical resource and also as a reference for nurses seeking hospice certification from the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center. This book was originally published under the Fast Facts series by Springer Publishing Company.

ICNP and Telematic Applications for Nurses in Europe - The Telenurse Experience (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed): R.A. Mortensen ICNP and Telematic Applications for Nurses in Europe - The Telenurse Experience (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed)
R.A. Mortensen
R2,252 Discovery Miles 22 520 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP) functions as a common language for nursing in Europe. It is developed as a common nomenclature and classification system, reflecting the specific clinical realities of nursing practice. Telenurse promotes the use of ICNP in Europe according to a double strategy involving the following approaches; 1) organisation of dissemination conferences on a European level and dissemination meetings on a national level. 2. Building of simple demonstrators illustrating possible real uses of ICNP in shared electronic patient records. Telenurse has focused on two aspects of the use of ICNP in electronic records. Firstly, entry of ICNP data in relation to daily systematic documentation of nursing care and secondly, statistical analysis of ICNP data extracted from the electronic patient records in relation to the development of clinical quality and resource management. In relation to the DataIn phase Telenurse spans both streams within the group of projects concerned with electronic patient records, viz. the stream concerned with the architecture of electronic patient records and the stream concerned with the architecture of terminology's. In relation to the DataOut phase the small scale demonstrators of electronic patient records have been equipped with data extraction mechanisms for clinical databases. These developments have been supplemented by software showing how the results of the analysis of data stored in the databases can be fed back to clinical practice using electronic means.
