The book will give a critical overview of the current research
literature regarding the topic of clinical decision making and
judgement in nursing. This is in contrast to other texts which
either rely on anecdotal evidence to justify their approach, or
focus on medical (rather than nurse) decision making. The text aims
to help individuals apply different techniques to practice, aiming
for a 'non-academic' style which will be easy for readers to
understand. Both the editors are researchers in the field of nurse
decision making and have considerable experience teaching the
subject on third level diploma/degree, masters level and
post-registration nursing courses. This text is therefore unique in
drawing together both the research (current as well as that which
has already been published) and practical experience of
implementing techniques in practice.
The British apprenticeship model of nurse training, developed under
Florence Nightingale's influence from 1860 at St Thomas's Hospital,
gained national and world-wide recognition. Its end was heralded
with the publication of the last national syllabus from the General
Nursing Council for England and Wales in 1977. This apprenticeship
model, a crucial part of the history of British health care for
over a century, is the subject of this book. Primary evidence, much
of it original, is gained from Parliamentary debates and reports,
syllabuses, long neglected nursing textbooks, major governmental
and professional reports, and the voices of nurses themselves
expressed through their professional journals. Primary sources are
systematically re-examined and contextually interpreted in the
light of new evidence. The study in particular interprets the
contemporary attitudes and moral values underpinning the
apprenticeship system, especially the place of vocation. The
reasons for the ending of this system, arising in part from the
cultural shifts of the 1960s, are explained in relation to this
historical moral context. The reader sees how the
self-understanding of the profession shifts, with much tension and
disagreement, as mores change. The book fills a major gap in the
history of nurse training, by giving a sustained account of the
apprenticeship model of nursing in context, and charting changing
values away from the historic vocational tradition. Its copious use
of primary sources will make this a key text for nurses, historians
and policy makers.
Reflections on Community Psychiatric Nursing provides a broad range of insights into many aspects of the CPN's work. Writing in a fresh and accessible style, Tony Gillam explores questions such as: * professional identity * the community and the role of the nurse * teaching, assessment and clinical supervision * good practice and the concept of risk * mental health promotion * user involvement * treatment, from medication to psychosocial interventions. Written by a practising CPN, this lively and easy-to-read introduction to the key debates in community mental health. It will be essential reading for students and those undertaking further training as CPN's. Practising nurses and other professionals will find it useful in developing their own reflective practice as well as offering a useful overview of an increasingly important area of nursing.

Dorothy Dore was born in the Philippines to a British father who
served there in the Spanish American War, and to a Filipina mestiza
mother. This young woman was attending an exclusive private school
when Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7, 1941. The Japanese
Imperial Army made a swift invasion of the Philippines, and
Dorothy's life became a nightmare. As recounted in this moving
memoir, Dorothy studied nursing so that she could support the
United States Armed Forces Far East (USAFFE). She spent the war
years on the run, working for the USAFFE when she could, but
abandoning those duties when her family was in need. Dorothy
recalls the sacrifices of her family, the brutal treatment of
civilians by the Japanese, and the vainglorious actions of some of
the USAFFE guerrilla leaders. It is a compelling story of love,
loss, family, courage, and survival during an especially horrifying
time.
Throughout the health care system, the traditional boundaries
between professional groups are becoming increasingly blurred in
response to local service needs and national policy objectives. New
clinical roles are developing and nurses and other health
professionals are finding opportunities to review and reconfigure
their roles in response to changing health care needs and national
policy imperatives. This book grew out of the editors involvement
in the UKCCs work on the regulation of specialist, advanced and
higher level practice and Department of Health research on new role
developments and the impact of the `New Dealreduction in junior
doctors hours. It combines a comprehensive and thought provoking
overview of the key issues and emerging challenges with practical
suggestions for promoting appropriate and sustainable role
development.Reflects the multi-disciplinary context of role

with practical advice on how to develop new clinical roles
Over the past two decades there has been a remarkable explosion in
the understanding of the biological basis of the brain and the
impact of that on behaviour. Furthermore, developments in
pharmacological therapeutic approaches continue at a tremendous
rate. Yet, although there are many mental health nursing textbooks
available, veryfew address this significant aspect of mental health
in any depth. Clearly, in order to deliver informed holistic care,
it is vital that practitioners appreciate the biological aspects of
mental health problems and the associated implications for clients,
families and the practitioner. This book aims to provide a broad
overview of the neurobiological factors which may contribute to,
and arise from, the development of mental health problems, and
seeks to clearly identify issues relevant to mental health nursing
practice. Key issues addressed include: The important role of
homeostasis in maintaining physical and emotional well-being The
important link between immunology and nutrition and mental health
The co-ordinated role of neuro-function and endocrine function in
influencing behaviour Adaptive and maladaptive responses of the
body to stress and stressors Ageing process as a continuum of life
and its relation to mental health Restorative function of
sleepProvides unique integrated approach linking biological issues
to psychological and social factors Clearly relevant to mental
health practiceExcellent overview of neurobiological factors in
mental health
Health--physical, mental, spiritual. All three are closely related.
But in modern mental-health care one of them is often neglected.
Nurses, social workers and counselors are rarely taught to minister
to their client's spiritual needs. In fact, they are sometime told
to ignore them altogether. But spiritual needs can play a part in
any illness. They may become especially strong when the mind and
emotions are affected. So how can Christian workers help their
clients spiritually without violating their freedom or antagonizing
other members of the health-care team? How can they help their
colleagues and keep their own sanity under extremely stressful
conditions? Judith Allen Shelly joins Sandra D. John and other
mental-health professionals to show how Christians can minister
effectively to such deep needs.
This book is a simple guide to the diagnosis, investigation, and treatment of all gynaecological cancers. It discusses the management of patients with gynaecological malignancies; considers the principles of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery; explains when and why each modality is used in treatment; covers the pathology of gynaecological cancer; discusses treatment of the advanced disease; and includes a chapter on the role of palliative care. The multidisciplinary approach reflects the cooperative practice in combined clinics.
