Violetta Thurstan
R638 Discovery Miles 6 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The women of the Red Cross at war
The author of this book, Violetta Thurston was a trained Red Cross volunteer senior administrator and nurse sent to Belgium by the organisation in the early days of the First World War in charge of a party of British nurses expecting to assist wounded British soldiers. Instead, they arrived to find the country on the brink of collapse and the roads around the capital clogged with refugees fleeing the combat zone. They had just arrived in Brussels when the German Army marched in, ostensibly passing through, but in reality establishing its presence and becoming their first patients. Soon, and to her relief, Violetta moved to a hospital at Charleroi nursing the wounded irrespective of nationality. After a return to Brussels she was sent to Copenhagen in Denmark and then to the eastern front and the Red Cross operations in Warsaw, Poland before moving on towards Lodz-which was at that time under bombardment with the so called Red Cross 'Flying Column.' Working among Russian troops on the front lines Violetta and her team from the 'flying Column' moved into the trenches at Radzivlow where they undertook their difficult and humane work in close proximity to the German line and under constant firing. This book gives readers an insight into the work of the members of the Red Cross during the Great War and illustrates the work that brave women undertook in most trying and dangerous conditions.

An Introduction to Psychological Care in Nursing and the Health Professions (Hardcover): Helena Priest An Introduction to Psychological Care in Nursing and the Health Professions (Hardcover)
Helena Priest
R4,554 Discovery Miles 45 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Caring is at the core of what nurses and other health professionals do. But caring encompasses more than simply looking after people's physical health needs. People requiring any health service will have psychological needs that affect their feelings, thoughts, and behaviour. Good psychological care can even help improve physical health outcomes. An Introduction to Psychological Care in Nursing and the Health Professions explains and promotes the importance of psychological care for people when they become physically ill, giving a sound theoretical basis to ensure care is evidence-based. It encourages the reader to think about the effects of illness and disability on patients, and to understand what can be done to identify and minimise any difficulties they might be experiencing in these areas. The chapters cover: the meaning and elements of care and holistic care; a model of psychological care in practice; the personal qualities and skills of carers that best underpin psychological care delivery, and how these might be enhanced; the knowledge needed for effective psychological caregiving; psychological care as it might be practised in a range of health care settings. This text contains key learning points, practical activities, reflective exercises and case illustrations. It is ideal for student and practising nurses, and health professionals who would like to improve their care for patients in this essential area.

Narratives of Recovery from Mental Illness - The role of peer support (Paperback): Mike Watts, Agnes Higgins Narratives of Recovery from Mental Illness - The role of peer support (Paperback)
Mike Watts, Agnes Higgins
R1,178 Discovery Miles 11 780 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Narratives of Recovery from Mental Illness presents research that challenges the prevailing view that recovery from 'mental illness' must take place within the boundaries of traditional mental health services. While Watts and Higgins accept that medical treatment may be a vital start to some people's recovery, they argue that mental health problems can also be resolved through everyday social interactions, and through peer and community support. Using a narrative approach, this book presents detailed recovery stories of 26 people who received various diagnoses of 'mental illness' and were involved in a mutual help group known as 'GROW'. Drawing on an in-depth analysis of each story, chapters offer new understandings of the journey into mental distress and a progressive entrapment through a combination of events, feelings, thoughts and relationships. The book also discusses the process of ongoing personal liberation and healing which assists recovery, and suggests that friendship, social involvement, compassion, and nurturing processes of change all play key factors in improved mental well-being. This book provides an alternative way of looking at 'mental illness' and demonstrates many unexplored avenues and paths to recovery that need to be considered. As such, it will be of interest to researchers, academics and postgraduate students in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, nursing, social work and occupational therapy, as well as to service providers, policymakers and peer support organisations. The narratives of recovery within the book should also be a source of hope to people struggling with 'mental illness' and emotional distress

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy - Research and Practice in Health and Social Care (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Brian Sheldon Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy - Research and Practice in Health and Social Care (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Brian Sheldon
R3,994 Discovery Miles 39 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) has been extensively researched and shown to be solidly underpinned by evidence. Broadly applicable across a wide range of personal and social problems - from depression and phobias to child behavioural problems - it is only now beginning to be used to its full potential in health and social care practice. This second edition of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy is comprehensively revised and updated. It takes into account the significant amount of new research in the discipline, and integrates theory, research and practice. The text includes plentiful case studies from across health and social care to illustrate particular approaches, different problems and different professional circumstances. Topics covered include: a discussion of the development and distinctive features of CBT; a comprehensive review of research on learning and cognition, examining the therapeutic implications of these studies; a thorough guide to assessment and therapeutic procedures, including methods of evaluation; illustrations of the main methods of helping with case examples from social work, nursing and psychotherapy; consideration of the ethical implications of such methods as part of mainstream practice. Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy is written in a lively and accessible style, and is designed to give a thorough grounding in cognitive-behavioural methods and their application. It is essential reading for students and professionals in psychology, social work, psychiatric nursing and psychotherapy.

Contemporary Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing - Pearson New International Edition (Paperback, 3rd edition): Carol Kneisl,... Contemporary Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing - Pearson New International Edition (Paperback, 3rd edition)
Carol Kneisl, Eileen Trigoboff
R2,581 Discovery Miles 25 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

CONTEMPORARY PSYCHIATRIC-MENTAL HEALTH NURSING, 3/e is the most up-to-date, evidence-based, culturally competent, authoritative, and comprehensive resource for psychiatric-mental health nursing. The authors emphasize the importance of empathy and client empowerment, while providing the knowledge and clinical competence that psychiatric-mental health nurses can use to help diverse clients heal on both psychobiologic and spiritual levels. They prepare students to tailor and humanize interventions for traditional as well as "new" psychiatric-mental health clients encountered in forensic settings, homeless shelters, and in other community and rehab settings. Since advances in neuroscience and genetics are redefining the scientific understanding of mental disorders, the authors offer a solid grounding in psychobiology, including brain imaging assessment and new psychopharmacologic treatment options. This edition adds a full chapter on Recovery and Psychiatric Rehabilitation Strategies, and many new boxed features showing how psychiatric disorders are portrayed in the news and movies.

Mental Health and Later Life - Delivering an Holistic Model for Practice (Hardcover): John Keady, Sue Watts Mental Health and Later Life - Delivering an Holistic Model for Practice (Hardcover)
John Keady, Sue Watts
R4,413 Discovery Miles 44 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The mental health needs of older people are all too often overlooked or put down to the inevitable consequences of ageing. This textbook will make it much easier for health, social care and third sector workers to identify, treat and support the needs of this population. The book takes an interdisciplinary team approach and sets the scene by looking at different practice contexts in the United Kingdom and the increasingly important role played by social care in addressing the mental health needs of older people. A number of more clinically focused chapters then cover: *mental health promotion *anxiety and depression *ageing and psychosis *alcohol and dual diagnosis *dementia *later life liaison services *complex and enduring mood disorders. Each clinical chapter makes use of extended and detailed case studies which illuminate the team's role in the assessment- intervention-evaluation cycle and ensure the text's application to practice. Service user and family perspectives are drawn on throughout and current practice exemplars outlined. The final chapter distils key messages from the book and sets a number of key challenges. Mental Health and Later Life highlights the rewards and complexity of working with older people with mental health needs and their families. It is invaluable reading for all those learning about, or working with, this population.

Recent Advances in Technologies for Inclusive Well-Being - Virtual Patients, Gamification and Simulation (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Recent Advances in Technologies for Inclusive Well-Being - Virtual Patients, Gamification and Simulation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Anthony Lewis Brooks, Sheryl Brahman, Bill Kapralos, Amy Nakajima, Jane Tyerman, …
R4,734 Discovery Miles 47 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In a time of ongoing pandemic when well-being is a priority this volume presents latest works across disciplines associated to Virtual Patients, Gamification and Simulation. Chapters herein present international perspectives with authors from around the globe contributing to this impactful third edition to the series following a 2014 Springer book on Technologies for Inclusive Well-Being and a 2017 Springer book Recent Advances in Technologies for Inclusive Well-Being. Digital technologies are pervasive in life and the contributions herein focus on specific attributes and situations, especially in training and treatment programmes spanning across ranges of diagnosis, conditions, ages, and targeted impacts. This volume purposefully does not cover all (even if that was possible) aspects on how virtual interactive space can align to statial computing, which in turn can align with related embodied entities (whatever the terms used e.g. Virtual, Augmented, Extended, Mixed Realities) along with AI, Deep Learning etc. It also doesn't cover what some may refer to as 'trendy terms' such as 360 degree, video, WebXR, cryptocurrency, blockchain, virtual goods, AR museums, travel and teleportation...however, what is covered in this book, and the prior volumes it builds upon (as above), is a sharing and questioning of advancing technologies for inclusive well-being through research and practices from an avant-garde perspective.

Health institutions are investing in and fielding information technology solutions at an unprecedented pace. With the recommendations from the Institute of Medicine around information technology solutions for patient safety, mandates from industry groups such as Leapfrog about using infor mation systems to improve health care, and the move toward evidence based practice, health institutions cannot afford to retain manual practices. The installation of multi-million dollar computerized health systems repre sents the very life blood of contemporary clinical operations and a crucial link to the financial viability of institutions. Yet, the implementation of health information systems is exceptionally complex, expensive and often just plain messy. The need for improvement in the art and science of systems implemen tation is clear: up to 70-80% of information technology installations fail. The reasons are multi-faceted, ranging from the complexity of the diverse workflows being computerized, the intricate nature of health organizations, the knowledge and skills of users to other reasons such as strategies for obtaining key executive support, weaving through the politics peculiar to the institution, and technical facets including the usability of systems. Thus, the art and science of successfully implementing systems remains deeply layered in elusiveness. Still, given the pervasiveness of system implementa tions and the importance of the outcomes, this is a critical topic, especially for nurses and informatics nurse specialists."
