Veteran clinicians offer a unique framework for understanding the
psychological origins of behaviors typical of Alzheimer's and other
dementias, and for providing appropriate care for patients as they
decline. Guidelines are rooted in the theory of retrogenesis in
dementia--that those with the condition regress in stages toward
infancy--as well as knowledge of associated brain damage. The
objective is to meet patients where they are developmentally to
best be able to address the tasks of their daily lives, from eating
and toileting to preventing falls and wandering. This accessible
information gives readers a platform for creating strategies that
are respectful, sensitive, and tailored to individual needs, thus
avoiding problems that result when care is ineffective or
counterproductive. Featured in the coverage: Abilities and
disabilities during the different stages of Alzheimer's disease.
Strategies for keeping the patient's finances safe. Pain in those
with dementia, and why it is frequently ignored. "Help! I've lost
my mother and can't find her!" Sexuality and intimacy in persons
with dementia. Instructive vignettes of successful caring
interventions. Given the projected numbers of individuals expected
to develop dementing conditions, Care Giving for Alzheimer's
Disease will find immediate interest among clinical psychologists,
health psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and primary
care physicians.
Series Information An interactive approach to learning, this series
provides everything a student needs for Foundation studies across

knowledge.
This "comforting...thoughtful" (The Washington Post) guide to
maintaining a high quality of life-from resilient old age to the
first inklings of a serious illness to the final breath-by the New
York Times bestselling author of Knocking on Heaven's Door is a
"roadmap to the end that combines medical, practical, and spiritual
guidance" (The Boston Globe). "A common sense path to define what a
'good' death looks like" (USA TODAY), The Art of Dying Well is
about living as well as possible for as long as possible and
adapting successfully to change. Packed with extraordinarily
helpful insights and inspiring true stories, award-winning
journalist Katy Butler shows how to thrive in later life (even when
coping with a chronic medical condition), how to get the best from
our health system, and how to make your own "good death" more
likely. Butler explains how to successfully age in place, why to
pick a younger doctor and how to have an honest conversation with
them, when not to call 911, and how to make your death a sacred
rite of passage rather than a medical event. This handbook of
preparations-practical, communal, physical, and spiritual-will help
you make the most of your remaining time, be it decades, years, or
months. Based on Butler's experience caring for aging parents, and
hundreds of interviews with people who have successfully navigated
our fragmented health system and helped their loved ones have good
deaths, The Art of Dying Well also draws on the expertise of
national leaders in family medicine, palliative care, geriatrics,
oncology, and hospice. This "empowering guide clearly outlines the
steps necessary to prepare for a beautiful death without fear"
(Shelf Awareness).
Christopher Kerr is a hospice doctor. All of his patients die. Yet
he has tended thousands of patients who, in the face of death,
speak of love, meaning and grace. They reveal that there is hope
beyond cure as they transition to focus on personal meaning. In
this extraordinary and beautiful book, Dr. Kerr shares his
patients' stories and his own research pointing to death as not
purely the end of life, but as a final passage of humanity and
transcendence. Drawing on interviews with over 1,200 patients and
more than a decade of quantified data , Dr. Kerr reveals why
pre-death dreams and visions are remarkable events that bring
comfort and exemplify human resilience. These are not regular
dreams. Described as "more real than real," they frequently include
loved ones long gone and mark the transition from distress to
acceptance. These end-of-life experiences help patients restore
meaning, make sense of the dying process and assist in reclaiming
it as an experience in which they have a say. They also benefit the
bereaved who get relief from seeing their loved ones pass with a
sense of calm closure. Beautifully written with astonishing
stories, this book, at its heart, celebrates the power to reclaim
how we die, while soothing the bereaved who witness their loved
ones go with unqualified grace.
"You must learn to hold in your feelings," Matron said, firmly but
not unkindly. "One day it will be your duty to support the family
and other staff through this tragedy. You need to be strong." From
the first time Vanessa Martin sets foot inside the world's most
renowned children's hospital, she knows that she will never have
another dull moment. From her first confrontation with the
legendary matron, to consoling hordes of worried parents and caring
for the wonderful bundles of joy themselves, Vanessa enters a world
full of laughter, heartache and, most importantly, hard work. In
this heartwarming memoir of a passionate, determined young woman
trying to help as many children as she can, Vanessa pulls back the
curtain on the bustling world of 60s London, and tells the
remarkable story of finding her place within it. Nostalgic,
charming and full of heart, The Great Ormond Street Nurse is the
heroic tale of a woman who has dedicated over 40 years to the NHS.
This book offers a philosophically-based, yet clinically-oriented
perspective on current medical reasoning aiming at 1) identifying
important forms of uncertainty permeating current clinical
reasoning and practice 2) promoting the application of an abductive
methodology in the health context in order to deal with those
clinical uncertainties 3) bridging the gap between biomedical
knowledge, clinical practice, and research and values in both
clinical and philosophical literature. With a clear philosophical
emphasis, the book investigates themes lying at the border between
several disciplines, such as medicine, nursing, logic,
epistemology, and philosophy of science; but also ethics,
epidemiology, and statistics. At the same time, it critically
discusses and compares several professional approaches to clinical
practice such as the one of medical doctors, nurses and other
clinical practitioners, showing the need for developing a unified
framework of reasoning, which merges methods and resources from
many different clinical but also non-clinical disciplines. In
particular, this book shows how to leverage nursing knowledge and
practice, which has been considerably neglected so far, to further
shape the interdisciplinary nature of clinical reasoning.
Furthermore, a thorough philosophical investigation on the values
involved in health care is provided, based on both the clinical and
philosophical literature. The book concludes by proposing an
integrative approach to health and disease going beyond the
so-called "classical biomedical model of care".
Spending the final chapter of your life in a nursing home is
considered, by many, a fate worse than death. Others, however, have
found that through enlightened, imaginative care even the frailest
of lives can flourish. The key to such a transformation is to
replace the constricting custodial centres of the past with a more
informed, research-based approach. This book is timely, responding
to evidence of the urgent need for change described in the
Australian Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety Final
Report: Care, Dignity and Respect and its predecessor subtitled
Neglect. In this book, the author proposes a model of care that
places the whole person at its centre, sidestepping the constraints
of a reductionist funding model that focusses on residents'
deficits - and the proprietor's financial gain. Aged care requires
a comprehensive research-based guide to fulfil this aim. Narratives
are included throughout the book to reinforce the fact that nursing
home care is about individual residents and their unique lives.
Topics explored in various chapters include: * Ageing in a Changing
Community * Social, Gerontological Care * A Palliative Approach *
Community Expectations Ageing in a Nursing Home: Foundations for
Care takes a realistic approach that draws on contemporary research
and narratives from the unique lives of older Australians who,
despite their frailty, teach us how to care. Such knowledge informs
and influences their future. The book is a resource intended for
all who have a stake in the provision of best practice residential
aged care, and all who benefit from such care. Its academic appeal
will include those who design and teach courses in aged care:
gerontology, general practice medicine, nursing, attendant care,
allied health, and chaplaincy. Academics and teachers will find
useful, well-referenced material for their courses, together with
ample scope for researchers.

The transitional phase from pre-older adult to older adult affects
the wellbeing of the concerned person economically, physically, and
psychologically. This book is a description of the aging transition
and discusses various psychological, health, and social challenges
faced by older adults globally. It also offers a comparative study
on the lifestyles of older adults in India and the United States.
Although there is no consensus yet on an all-encompassing theory of
aging, this book centers on various theories related to aging
processes in an effort to advance discussion on different aspects
of aging. Various theoretical formulations, such as
person-centered, Hinduism, biopsychosocial, and positive
psychology, guided the author to address the topics covered in this
volume. Aging and Physicians Aging and Retirement Aging,
Caregiving, and COVID-19 Aging and Diversity Aging and Longevity
Aging, Disease Prevention, and Technology Aging and Spirituality
Through the chapters, the author builds an understanding of the
fundamental relation of aging with various health and socioeconomic
factors, and also emphasizes a person-centered, holistic approach
that values personal autonomy, choice, comfort, dignity, and
purposeful living to support aging well. Rethinking the Aging
Transition: Psychological, Health, and Social Principles to Guide
Aging Well has academic value from a multicultural perspective that
would be of benefit to graduate and undergraduate students in
gerontology and other disciplines that study aging and older adult
populations. With the main aim of raising awareness, this book is
an important resource for a diverse group of populations globally,
including clinical and non-clinical caregivers, other health(care)
professionals, and policy-makers.

This book explores and elaborates three theories of public reason,
drawn from Rawlsian political liberalism, natural law theory, and
Confucianism. Drawing together academics from these separate
approaches, the volume explores how the three theories critique
each other, as well as how each one brings its theoretical arsenal
to bear on the urgent contemporary debate of medical assistance in
dying. The volume is structured in two parts: an exploration of the
three traditions, followed by an in-depth overview of the
conceptual and historical background. In Part I, the three
comprehensive opening chapters are supplemented by six dynamic
chapters in dialogue with each other, each author responding to the
other two traditions, and subsequently reflecting on the possible
deficiencies of their own theories. The chapters in Part II cover a
broad range of subjects, from an overview of the history of
bioethics to the nature of autonomy and its status as a moral and
political value. In its entirety, the volume provides a vibrant and
exemplary collaborative resource to scholars interested in the role
of public reason and its relevance in bioethical debate.
This book takes the practical approaches and tools provided in
'Living a Good Life with Dementia' and applies them to the family
context to help families support a loved one with dementia. A
Family Guide to Living Well with Dementia aims to help families and
carers gain knowledge and insight to be able to support the person
with dementia to live life as they wish. It elaborates on the
concept of Self-Directed Support and Care for people living with
dementia and links the various Person Centred approaches to
dementia care with Person Centred Planning and Community based
approaches. This easy-to-follow and accessible guide contains
information that is intended to support people to plan for how they
want to live their life, receive their care, and for end-of-life
planning. Also included in this book is information about people's
rights within the health and social care legislation, insight into
behaviour and methods of communication as well as the options
available to people in way of support, paid and community-based.
The concept of the Dementia Care Triad (people living with
dementia, unpaid carers and professional carers) is explored and
developed further to include the layer of community. Often people
who have been diagnosed with dementia and their families report
feeling lost and not sure what to do apart from learning to adapt
and find a way to do their best in what can often be difficult
circumstances. This book provides easy, engaging, and practical
content for things to consider and conversations to have so as to
be able to provide the best care and support on a basis of sound
understanding from everyone involved.

This book contrasts earlier textbooks on "evidence-based
practices." Whereas the latter is a slogan that call for scientific
evidence to be used in standardized treatment manuals, ethics-based
practices call for individualized treatment that makes the
situation meaningful for the patient. The main argument for
changing the treatment design from being evidence-based to one
based on ethics, is the hypothesis that good health care is based
on treatment which makes the situation positive and meaningful for
the patient. The awareness for this is primarily provided by
ethical considerations.
This contributed volume explores flexible, adaptable, and
sustainable solutions to the shockingly high costs of birth across
the globe. It presents innovative and collaborative maternity care
practices and policies that are intersectional, human rights-based,
transdisciplinary, science-driven, and community-based. Each
chapter describes participatory and midwifery-oriented care that
helps improve maternal and newborn outcomes within minoritized
populations. The featured case studies respond to resource
constraints and inequities of access by transforming relations
between providers and families or by creating more egalitarian
relations among diverse providers such as midwives, obstetricians,
and nurses that minimize inefficient hierarchies within maternity
care. The authors build on a growing awareness that quality and
respectful midwifery care has lower costs and improved outcomes for
child bearers, newborns, and providers. Topics include: Sustainable
collaborations including transfers of care among midwives and
obstetricians in India, The Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom,
and Denmark Midwifery-oriented, femifocal, indigenous, and
inclusive models of care that counter obstetric violence and gender
stereotypes in Mexico, Chile, Guatemala, Argentina, and India Doula
care and midwifery care for women of color, previously incarcerated
women, indigenous women, and other minoritized groups in the global
north and south Practices and metrics for improving quality of
newborn and maternal care as well as maternal and newborn outcomes
