There are few books devoted to the topic of brain plasticity and behavior. Most previous works that cover topics related to brain plasticity do not include extensive discussions of behavior. The first to try to address the relationship between recovery from brain damage and changes in the brain that might support the recovery, this volume includes studies of humans as well as laboratory species, particularly rats. The subject matter identifies a consistent correlation between specific changes in the brain and behavioral recovery, as well as various factors such as sex and experience that influence this correlation in consistent ways. Evolving from a series of lectures given as the McEachran Lectures at the University of Alberta, this volume originally began as a summary of the lectures, but has expanded to include more background literature, allowing the reader to see the author's biases, assumptions, and hunches in a broader perspective. In writing this volume, the author had two goals in mind: * to initiate senior undergraduates or graduate psychology, biology, neuroscience or other interested students to the issues and questions regarding the nature of brain plasticity, and * to provide a monograph in the form of an extended summary of the work the author and his colleagues have done on brain plasticity and recovery of function.

A negative effect of the ageing population is that more individuals are experiencing cognitive decline and some form of neurodegenerative disease. With the number of people experiencing dementia likely to double in the next 20 years, this change in society presents one of greatest challenges facing public health personnel in the 21st century. The diagnosis and treatment of memory disorders pose considerable problems for the clinician. Many different organic conditions produce disturbances of memory, but the relationship between cerebral pathology and memory disturbance can often be difficult to establish. Furthermore, assessment and treatment require specialized skills and merit an inter?disciplinary approach towards patient management. Despite the many books which have been written on various aspects of memory disorders, none so far has been specially designed to give practical help to those who have to deal with diagnosis and subsequent management of patients with memory disturbance resulting from specific types of cerebral pathology. The author achieves this aim by organizing his book on the basis of clinical aetiology. Anatomical and psychological perspectives are also introduced, but the emphasis is on approaches which will help clinicians in the management of patients with specific neurological diseases. For example, the essential topic of differential diagnosis is given prominence throughout: the principles of diagnostic assessment are discussed in a separate chapter, and specific diagnostic features are also outlined in each of the chapters dealing with individual cerebral pathologies. Dyspraxia is a disorder of voluntary, purposeful, learned movement and is one of the most common sequelae of stroke, head-injury, neoplasm and abnormal ageing.
